ECCLESFIELD LORRY DRIVER JAILED FOR TWO YEARS A HGV driver from Ecclesfield has been sentenced to two years in prison after being convicted of causing death by dangerous driving. Carlisle Crown Court heard how, on September 8 2016, at around 5.20am, Ashley Cole of Mellor Lea Farm, Ecclesfield, Sheffield, was driving an articulated lorry when it was involved in a collision with an Audi A4 driven by Jamie Armstrong of Haltwhistle, Northumberland. Cole, 56, had parked at Stainmore Café on the A66 at Brough to rest and was resuming his journey prior to the collision.

The court heard how Cole was attempting to manoeuvre his vehicle onto the westbound carriageway to continue his journey when he say two HGVs travelling on the westbound carriageway. Cole then had to wait and, in doing so, his vehicle was blocking the eastbound carriageway.

prevented the fatal injuries he suffered. Cole denied that his driving had been dangerous, causing the death of Mr Armstrong. However, he was found guilty of the offence at court following a trial.

Mr Armstrong’s Audi, travelling eastbound, then collided with the offside trailer.

Sergeant Claire Sampson of Cumbria Police’s Mobile Support Group said: “This case is tragic for everyone involved, Jamie Armstrong was given no opportunity to avoid this collision.

Mr Armstrong, 30, suffered fatal injuries as a result of the collision. He had not been wearing a seatbelt at the time but an investigation found a seatbelt would not have

“Our thoughts remain with the family of Mr Armstrong. We would like to thank them for the dignity and patience they have shown throughout this investigation.”

Can you help uncover the World War Two secrets of Bradfield and Dungworth? MEMBERS of the local community are being asked to get involved in a new project to uncover the secrets of the Dungworth and Bradfield area of Sheffield in the Second World War. A series of free events are being held in the coming weeks to encourage people to come forward with memories and artefacts, find out more about the project and find out how they can get more involved. The Dungworth and Bradfield area was a hive of military activity from 1939 to 1945 with over 5,000 troops billeted in the area as defence forces against German attack. The study aims to uncover the roles of Dale Dyke and the other nearby dams in the area. They were key strategic points and had high wires constructed around their circumference in a bid to stop low level bombing as planes headed for the armament factories in the East End of the city and other areas. Project manager Richard Godley said: “The role of the nearby Derwent Dams has passed into legend via the Dambusters story. But very little is known

about the part played in the war by the dams in this area. “They were a massively strategic resource and were surrounded by high wire and gun installations. “We also would like to find out more about what it was like for local people to live here during the war, how the media portrayed the war effort and how the billeted troops interacted with the local community that were deployed as defence forces.â€? The project is particularly keen to hear from anyone that: • Has artefacts or photographs from the Parish area they’d be willing to share • Has personal histories of Dungworth/ Bradfield and district people who fought and died in WW2 • Knows anyone who was involved in defending the dams and reservoirs? • Knows where any WW2 installations that defended the area are located? Dungworth and Bradfield District Heritage Group were awarded ÂŁ50,000 from the

Heritage Lottery Fund for the work as well as support from Bradfield Parish Council. The project will fund the training of volunteers in researching military records, creating an exhibition and publicity materials. It will also create a book from the findings of the research, deliver community focused events at local venues and more. The first events are as follows: Show & Tell – Dungworth Village Hall (Main Road, Dungworth S6), 9.30am to 12.30pm on September 12. Drop-in Session – Stannington Library (Uppergate Road, S6 6BX), 1.30pm to 6pm on September 17. Show & Tell – Dungworth Village Hall (Main Road, Dungworth S6), 12.30pm to 4pm on October 12. If you would like to get involved in the project, please contact Richard Godley on 07854 646742 or email: Dungworthheritagegroup@gmail. com

Ecclesfield Parish Council meets Lord Mayor at Ecclesfield Gala ECCLESFIELD Parish Council Chairman, Cllr Garry Weatherall and fellow councillors Michael Appleby and John Housley with Mrs Tara Ball, the new Clerk to the Council, welcomed Sheffield’s Lord Mayor to the Parish Council’s stall at Ecclesfield Gala last Sunday.

LOCAL HERITAGE OPEN DAYS

BOTH the nail forge at Hoylandswaine and Wortley Top Forge will be holding free open days for Heritage Open Days over the coming weeks.

The nail forge, between Penistone and Barnsley, will be open free of charge on Saturday September 15, from 11am to 3pm. It is a historic small workshop where nails were made by hand on an anvil. Once there were many forges like it in the area, but now it is a rarity. It still has the original hearth, bellows and chimney. You can hear volunteers explain how nails were made, how the nailmaker and his family worked in a forge close

to their home, and the part that nailmaking played in village life.

physical work, the dangers. Just think what it was like to live there!

Hoylandswaine is just off the A628 Barnsley-Penistone road. The Nail Forge is on the village street near the Lord Nelson public house. There will be an Open sign outside.

Visitors will be given a guided tour by volunteers. They will see the waterwheels turning, and some of our recent restoration projects. There is also a collection of historic engines and machines, some of which will be working.

Wortley Top Forge will be open free of charge on Saturday September 8, from 11am to 4pm. It is Britain’s last surviving water powered heavy iron forge. For centuries its waterwheels worked huge hammers which forged hot iron into shape. It has been restored over many years by teams of volunteers. Come and see the wheels turn – and imagine the heat, the noise, the hard

save

Wortley Top Forge is by the River Don, on a side road to the west of the A629 Huddersfield road. The postcode is S35 7DN. Turn off the A629 just south of Wortley village, or at the traffic lights in Thurgoland. There is free car parking for visitors in the grounds. Full details of Heritage Open Days activities are available on www.heritageopendays.co.uk

The Gala was a great success and an opportunity to promote the work of the Council and its archiving project. The Chairman presented the Lord Mayor with the pack of information being given out at the stall and a copy of the 2019 calendar. The calendar is a new venture for the Council led by the Archiving Project and its volunteers. Copies of the calendar are available from the Parish Council offices, priced at £4.50. The Parish Council is taking part in the Heritage Open Days festival directly for the first time as well as supporting local groups. On September 14, they will be holding two events. The first is a guided ‘then and

now’ walk around High Green, meeting at 10am outside the Parish Council offices on Mortomley Lane, High Green. In the afternoon there will be another ‘Meet the Archive’ event on the theme of ‘Ordinary Lives and Extraordinary Women’ at the Parish Council Offices, Mortomley Lane, High Green. A spokesperson said: “We are organising the event to celebrate getting votes for women and men, home life and some of the extraordinary women who lived in and influenced the lives of generations in the Parish area. “We will have some of our archive collection of local history material on display including photos, maps, pamphlets and brochures. There will also be an opportunity to see some of the slide shows we’ve put together, go onto our website to view the images there, and look at our collection of local history books and reference material. “We would like more people to get involved with the archiving proj-

ect and our open afternoon will be a chance for people to come along and find out more. “You don’t have to be a history expert or have lived all your life in the area to take part. Young or old, everyone can contribute. The aim of the project is to capture the rich and varied local history from across the parish. One of the things we are keen to do is to put more ‘names to faces’ for some of the photographs that we’ve had donated to the archive.” The open afternoon is a free drop-in event and everyone is welcome. It begins at 1.30pm and finishes at 6.30pm. For more details of the archiving project and our other events, please contact, Christine, at the Parish Council Offices, Mortomley Lane, High Green, Sheffield S35 3HS; telephone: 0114 2845095; email: C h r ist i ne. hand l e y @ ecclesfield-pc.gov.uk or see our facebook page Ecclesfield Civil Parish Past and Present Archiving Project for more information.

Advice issued following S6 distraction burglary SHEFFIELD detectives have issued advice following a distraction burglary in the Bradfield area, in which an elderly woman had cash taken. At around 3pm on Thursday August 30, two men claiming to be salesmen entered the home of a 91-year-old woman in the Bradfield. They reportedly walked into the woman’s flat without asking, and tried to sell products to the victim, that she neither wanted or required, as Detective Sergeant Dave Devey explains. “Despite the victim repeatedly telling the men she did not want the products, they forcibly demanded that she pay for them, which she eventually did under duress. However, once the men had left the property, the victim realised that a further quantity of cash had gone miss-

ing from her purse and contacted police.” “The first man is described as white, around 60-years-old, with white hair, of a medium – large build, with facial hair and was smartly dressed. “The second man is also described as white, around 27-years-old, taller than the first man, of medium build and with short brown hair. “A third man, described as white, has also been linked to the investigation, but there is no further description at this time. “Enquiries are ongoing to identify these men, who we understand left in a black Ford van. “We also have officers in the S6 area today to provide reassurance. Should anyone have any information about this in-

cident, please contact South Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 485 of 30 August 2018. “These men clearly targeted the woman due to her age and vulnerability and distracted her while cash was taken. Sadly, this is something we have seen happening in Sheffield.” “I’d like to ask people to make their family or friends, particularly elderly relatives, aware of these incidents. There are also some steps that you or they can take to protect yourself if you have concerns. “If you ever have any doubts about the legitimacy of the person at your door, ask to see their identification – a legitimate caller won’t mind you taking the time to check their identity and verify it with their employer.

“Don’t be afraid to close and lock your door while you make any checks. If someone asks for money to be transferred over the phone or online, I’d strongly advise against this, as most companies will not ask for this type of transaction to be completed, unless there is a genuine reason. “You could also consider putting up a deterrent sign which states ‘no cold callers’ to deter any knocking on your door. That said, bogus officials and cold callers can be anyone from adults, men, women and even children and may be offering a variety of services. “Generally, cold callers and bogus officials claim to be from utility companies, charities or other reputable businesses, in order to gain access to people’s property.

“Once access has been gained, they will steal money and other valuables. Rogue traders will generally try and talk householders into paying high prices for services that are low cost to carry out, or don’t carry out a service at all. “If ever you have any concerns, close and lock the door while you make checks, phone a neighbour or relative or phone 101 with concerns or 999 in an emergency and if you feel threatened.” “Finally we would like to reassure the public that we are doing everything we can, including liaising with neighbouring forces, to tackle cross border criminality. However, we do feel that the best weapon we have against these types of criminals is the support and help of the public so please do contact us.”

STOCKSBRIDGE CYCLISTS TOUR EUROPE

MEMBERS of Stocksbridge Cycling Club have been busy this summer doing some longdistance rides across Europe.

Peter Knight took time off from running dressed as a Bradfield Brewery beer bottle to cycle from Leeds to near Kitzbuhl in Austria riding through Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. He was linking locations where his grandmother had lived. John Rowe took the ferry from Portsmouth to near Caen and

then powered down through France in less than four days to join family in Bergerac.

Peter Morgan did a more leisurely tour of Provence in France visiting Mont Ventoux and then travelling to Spain to complete an Atlantic to Mediterranean traverse from Bilbao to Girona. Stocksbridge CC also do shorter distances. You can join their Tuesday and Thursday rides that leave outside Trek in Fox Valley

at 6pm most weeks riding between 20 and 30 miles. The Sunday club ride leaves 9am from the same location doing 50 to 70 miles. See the SCC facebook page for details. Nobody gets left behind. This year’s Stocksbridge Hill Climb, which goes up Pea Royd Lane, starts at 11am on Sunday September 30. Entries are via the cyclingtimetrials.org.uk website or just come and watch. The start is in Fox Valley.

“Putting children centre stage”

Maximise your child’s potential with performing arts classes

IF you want to get the new school year off to a flying start, you might want to consider enrolling your child into performing arts classes. Research has shown learning performing arts can actually boost academic achievement. It also builds confidence and perseverance, boosts self-esteem and helps young people develop empathy, compassion and the ability to work in a team. Noodle Performance Art’s NPA Academy allows children, aged between five and 16, the opportunity to reap the benefits of learning to sing, dance and act. The weekly sessions, at Christ Church Community Hall, in Stocksbridge, last for two hours and give young people comprehensive training in the performing arts in a fun, no-pressure environment.

Carla Hewitt, director of Noodle Performance Arts in North Sheffield, said: “Before I started running my own Noodle franchise, I worked as a teacher with more than 10 years’ experience in both primary and secondary education. I have seen for myself just how much performing arts can help children fulfil their true potential. “Singing, dancing and acting helps young people develop important social and communication skills which will come in handy throughout their lives. There are so many benefits to performing arts, it would be impossible to list them all.

Students taking part in NPA Academy classes have regular opportunities to perform, including in an annual show. However, unlike some traditional theatre schools, the focus is on enjoying the experience and there are no compulsory uniforms or “Learning lines can help children with their liter- exams. acy, while dance helps support an active, healthy lifestyle. THE EXTRAORDINARY GATTY WOMEN OF ECCLESFIELD OFTEN referred to as the Brontës of South Yorkshire, the Gatty women of Ecclesfield, a mother and four daughters, were truly remarkable women. Local historian Melvyn Jones will be presenting an illustrated talk on the Gatty women at 7pm on Saturday September 15 in St Mary’s Church, Ecclesfield. Mrs Margaret Gatty (18091873) came to Ecclesfield in 1839 following her marriage to Alfred Gatty who had been appointed vicar of the parish. She had ten children, (eight of whom survived to adulthood) and was a pioneer of the use of chloroform to relieve pain in childbirth.

Judy’s Magazine, that was read all over the world, an expert on sundials and a renowned marine biologist. Such was her scientific fame that she had a marine worm named after her – Gattya spectabilis! On top of this the four daughters were all educated at home by Mrs Gatty, and her four sons (two of whom were knighted) were prepared for their public school educations by Mrs Gatty and her daughters.

Together with her four daughters, Mrs Gatty headed a formidable team of researchers, illustrators, editors and writers. Mrs Gatty herself was a children’s writer of great renown. Her books were translated into French, German, Italian, Russian and Swedish and one edition of Parables from Nature was illustrated by the famous Pre-Raphaelite artists Burne-Jones, Holman Hunt and Millais.

The daughters all played key roles in the Gatty enterprise. Eldest daughter, Margaret, was an illustrator and editor; Undine, the youngest daughter, for decades was a general factotum and Horatia the second daughter was her mother’s ‘seaweedising’ assistant and became a minor authority on the subject at a fairly early age. She went on to edit Aunt Judy’s Magazine for a further 12 years after her mother’s death and saw her mother’s last two books through the press during Mrs Gatty’s final illness. Horatia died in 1945 when she was 99 and for many years looked after copyright issues on behalf of her late mother and sister Juliana.

She was also editor of a children’s magazine, Aunt

The second daughter, Juliana, who died at the early

age of 43 in 1885, had an even greater literary reputation as a children’s writer than her mother. Her books were translated not only into French, German and Italian but also into Afrikaans and Hindi. Baden Powell took the name ‘Brownies’ for the junior branch of the Girl Guides from the characters in one of her stories. What is even more remarkable is that she derived much of her inspiration from ‘her local patch’ (Ecclesfield and Grenoside) – the countryside, the people and their dialect. And these remarkable women left behind not only their published works but also diaries, letters, drawings and paintings reflecting their colourful lives and these form the basis of this illustrated talk. Entry is free but you need a ticket from www. eventbrite.co.uk/e/ theg att y - wom e n - t i c ke t s 47812377107 or from the church on Tuesday or Friday mornings, 10.3012.30. At the event a new book, Picture Perfect, with illustrations by Gatty family members will be launched.

Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local Estate Planning Consultant of 12 years experience. I am an expert in helping people arrange their Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Pre-paid Funeral Plans. I specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional estate planning services, but with aA helpful, local family business personal touch. at I offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following: Barnsley Road, Bridgend, Penistone, S36 7AH

CHAPELS OF REST 01226 762 481

• Making a basic Will New Road, Deepcar, S36 2RS • Setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney 0114 288 3169 • Protecting your home for future generations info@dysonfunerals.co.uk • Pre–paid Funeral Plans

www.dysonfunerals.co.uk

Having a Will in place ensures your assets go to who you choose. It makes the whole process much easier for the people you leave behind and it puts in black and white exactly what you want to happen, avoiding any misunderstanding or arguing. Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able

to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation

to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and I am a member of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane!

Your Letters Successful event I would like to thank all involved with the Party in the Park at Mortomley on Saturday September 1. There were plenty of stalls and rides to entertain the children and plenty of people attended the event. Hopefully this will become a bigger event year and year. David Ogle and I raised nearly ÂŁ70 on our stall and the money has gone towards a graffiti removal kit.

Grateful thanks

Publication subject to space and content.

Through your newspaper, may I say a big thank you to the staff at Yvonne’s hairdressers and a lady and gentleman who came to help me when my husband passed out whilst waiting for a bus on Saturday morning.

Publishing does not mean we agree with the content.

After returning home and a good sleep, he is now much better.

Your Letters

Thank you all again. A very grateful Stocksbridge resident

Different potential A few years ago Stocksbridge High School provided for pupils who were unlikely to take many GCSEs or get high grades with the ‘STAR’ unit in school, the ‘Personal Learning Base’ in the youth centre building and they ran an allotment at Stanley Road. What is happening now for 11 to 16 year olds who may have great potential but don’t get the highest exam results? Debbie Cundy, a life coach from Oughtibridge, has raised ÂŁ825.11 for Weston Park Hospital Charity for cycling 293 miles between Inverness and Dumbarton. Team Green Moor calls out for votes to bag a share of Tesco’s bag fund TEAM Green Moor is bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative. Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores awarded to local community projects. Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant. Team Green Moor is one of the groups on the shortlist. The initiative is to develop an interactive nature trail for both children and adults to share and

learn about the biodiversity in our community. The trail would include the Children’s Playground currently under refurbishment to improve the landscaping and planting, the Delf and a number of other ‘green spaces’ around the village. The benefit to the community and its visitors would be the provision of educational resources to allow all to gain a better understanding of their environment and how we can work together to preserve, protect and improve it for others use into the future. The nature trail will also be a massive benefit to younger children in terms of introducing them to the natural world, something which we hope they will take into adulthood. Voting is open in the Penistone Tesco store and Chapeltown Tesco Express in September and October and customers will cast their vote using a

Tesco’s Bags of Help project has already delivered over £56 million to more than 16,000 projects across Britain. Tesco customers get the chance to vote for three different groups every time they shop. Every other month, when votes are collected, three groups in each of Tesco’s regions will be awarded funding.

Groundwork’s National Chief Executive, Graham Duxbury, said: “Bags of Help continues to enable local communities up and down Britain to improve the local spaces and places that matter to them. The diversity of projects that are being funded shows that local communities have a passion to create something great in their area. We are pleased to be able to be a part of the journey and provide support and encouragement to help local communities thrive.

Alec Brown, Head of Community at Tesco, said: “Bags of Help has been a fantastic success and we’ve been overwhelmed by the response from customers. It’s such a special scheme because it’s local people who decide how the money will be spent in their community. There are some fantastic projects on the shortlists and we can’t wait to

Funding is available to community groups and charities looking to fund local projects that bring benefits to communities. Anyone can nominate a project and organisations can apply online. To find out more visit www.tesco.com/bagsofhelp.

PLANNING YOUR WEDDING OVER the course of the last year, many of us will have been to a wedding or two. In the midst of the celebrations, it’s easy to look past the planning and preparation that takes place in the months leading up to the big day. For those couples who are currently planning their own wedding and could do with a bit of guidance, this feature will highlight local businesses who can share with you their expertise and put you on track to completing your preparations and give you peace of mind. There’s a lot to prepare for and at first it can seem daunting as though the list will never end. There’s the venue, the dress, hair and make-up, a cake, transport and that’s just to name a few. Even if you haven’t got a date set, there’s no harm in planning ahead and getting some ideas now. A quick browse around any of the shops in this feature will help you to get ahead and ease the stress for when it’s time to make arrangements. This feature can also act as a reminder for the last few arrangements you need to make and have perhaps forgotten about.

FA VASE EXIT FOR CHURCH

A GOAL from Shelly either side of half time dumped Penistone Church FC out of the Buildbase FA Vase in the qualifying round on Saturday. Sam Scrivens gave Church, playing front of a crowd of 255, the dream start with a goal after just five minutes but the Penistone side couldn’t get the killer second goal and they paid for it on 42 minutes when Israel Johnsen levelled the scores. And things went from bad to worse when Dan Keane gave Shelly the lead seven minutes after the break.

Seconds escape relegation as firsts end season in entertaining fashion

Local Sport ERNEST THORPE Halifax Road, Thurgoland 0114 2882152

MOT’s £35.00 Chris Thwaites ended Richmond’s challenge. WITH Stocksbridge CC’s first XI sat comfortably in mid table and well clear of relegation, they travelled to Sheffield Centralians for what was a dead rubber. Captain Pete Broomhead won the toss and elected to bat in the sunshine. The Stocksbridge innings didn’t get off to a good start as the in form Matt Price was bowled first ball of the game. Captain Broomhead dug in well on what was a lively wicket before being caught at mid on. Chris Pickford and Jack Newton put on excellent partnership before Newton

was dismissed for 34. Pickford continued his excellent innings bringing up his 50 in style by hitting three sixes in a over, Pickford was finally dismissed in his 60s as he looked to up the run rate. The lower order scratched around as Stocksbridge posted 166-9 from 46 overs. As this was the final game, the first XI made some changes in the field as opening bowler Joe Hibbert took up a new role as wicketkeeper. The bowling was rotated throughout as all 11 Stocksbridge players bowled.

There was some interesting bowling however Jack Lyons and Steve Perry formed an excellent bowling partnership picking up the opening two wickets. Jack Newton got the third wicket however Centralians reached the target with seven wickets in hand. Stocksbridge CC second team finished the season with a home game against Richmond CC first team and needed to win to have a chance of staying in YDCL Division Three.

Stocksbridge batted first and got off to a great start with Jack Murfin scoring a rapid 62 including a huge six that landed in the car park from the top wicket. A partnership of 100 between Bob Newton 46 and captain Chris Ogley 73 took Stocksbridge to 195-3 and a late order cameo from Tom Dobson 25 took the home team to there biggest total of the season 289-8. Richmond CC first team reply was ripped wide open by an incredible spell of bowling from paceman Chris Thwaites who took five wickets in his first four overs for no runs and the scoreboard read 0-5. Two run outs, a wicket from

Jim Tomlinson and two more wickets from Chris Thwaites, who finished with season best figures of 7-16, ended Richmond’s innings on 105 all out after a fifty from their captain gained a little respectability. With Hathersage CC second team losing, this result put Stocksbridge above them and De la Salle and to safety after a great effort of winning three out of last five games. So after promotion last season it was good for the second team to end on a high and plan for further progress next season.

AWAY DAY BLUES FOR PARK STEELS Lincoln United 2-1 Stocksbridge PS By Dave Rhodes It was back on the road again for Steels as they travelled to top six side Lincoln United. Steels will be confident of gathering a positive result after the squad has showed good improvement and momentum of late. Glorious September sun welcomed the players onto the pitch. For the third game in a row Steels conceded a goal early in the game when a flat back four was caught out by a simple long ball, Todd Jordan was caught cold down the left side channel, out muscled by the impressive Kevin Hermigou the Lincoln centre forward. Hermigou scuffed a tame right footed effort from just inside the box which crept underneath the diving Greaves. 1-0 down after three minutes and again Steels were up against it. The pitch was disappointingly hard, sparse and bobbly and this made for mistakes and control issues.

Hermigou was a real handful for the Steels back four but Jordan was determined to redeem himself and did so on numerous occasions as long balls were knocked forward, dealing with them expertly. The young Steels side rallied with terrific spirit, good passing and offensive movement, despite the poor surface, but couldn’t break down an efficient and experienced Lincoln unit. On 25 minutes Coleman replaced the injured Mangham. A Rhodes snap shot from 18 yards was hit straight at Emery the home goalkeeper who saved comfortably, Ruthven and Moxam went close with shots on the turn but frustratingly, defenders blocked their efforts. On 44 minutes a rare venture forward from the home side caused panic in the away penalty box as both Turner and Jordan got in the way with last ditch defending.

As the second half got underway, again Steels were caught cold early, when a whipped in left wing cross was met by Norris on 52 minutes six yards out, but although connecting with the ball well crashed his header onto the bar when it was easier to score. A let off for Steels.

The game headed into the last five minutes with a draw looking to be the best outcome but Steels tried to get the winner and continued to pile men forward, on 85 minutes Lincoln showed that they were not finished and picked off tired legs in the Steels 18 yard box.

On 60 minutes Steels were deservedly back on level terms. Brad Beatson was both impressive and influential down the left and didn’t put a foot wrong all game really. His cross was turned for a corner as Steels pressed forward. The corner taken by Coleman wasn’t cleared and McFadyen was on hand to flick the ball home from close range after a Wiles low shot.

Smith, the Lincoln number two, danced into the box going past two defenders down the right, he made a meal of slight contact from a steels defender and dived sideways - penalty given. It was converted to make it 2-1 and Lincoln saw out the game with solid defending and clearances as Park Steels hit long balls into the box.

Emery, the home goalkeeper, was certainly the busier of the two and saved well from Ruthven twice and Moxam at the near post. With the bit between their teeth Park Steels searched and probed for the second goal only to be thwarted by Emery.

Michael Emery the home goalkeeper had a good day and was named man of the match. Steels can take plenty of positives from the game, but they need to tighten up defensively and keep working hard collectively. Next up its Carlton Town on Tuesday September 11.

PIGS SCORE A SWEET WIN A BEAUTIFUL late summer afternoon at Coal Pit Lane saw Stocksbridge Rugby begin their league campaign with a resounding 40-14 victory over much fancied York based outfit, Nestle Rowntree.

Crampton & Moore

When Rowntree did have some possession, the collective defensive efforts of the home side kept them at bay, with some shuddering hits from the likes of Nesbitt, Newton and O’Leary.

Given the heat and early season rustiness, Stocksbridge were never going to maintain the total intensity of the first half performance, and gradually the plucky visitors, who never gave up despite being under pressure for most of the game, dragged themselves back into the contest and held possession and territory for long periods of the second half.

Afterwards head coach Keenan was clearly delighted with the result. “This is just a start, but reward for the effort the lads have given during pre-season training. There is still much to work on, but it’s nice to start the league campaign off with a win.” This week Stocksbridge Rugby are at home again with a mouth watering local derby against Sheffield Oaks at Coal Pit Lane. Coach Andy Tyers added: “We have struggled to play our natural game against the Oaks in recent fixtures. However, if we repeat this performance, we will take some stopping.” Stocksbridge would like to thank Eric Lidster for sponsoring the match. Kick off against Oaks on Saturday is at 3pm and entrance is free, so come and support the Piggies.
