super mums send charlie to disneyland

Mums Sam Pawson and Heather Haigh raise £4000 to send Charlie Leeks and his family on a holiday of a lifetime. In September 2015 at just four years old Charlie was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour and hydrocephalus, he had emergency brain surgery to fit a VP shunt to

drain the fluid from around his brain and also had a biopsy. Charlie was put on watch and wait with three-monthly MRI scans for the next two years. Unfortunately, at his last MRI in September 2017, his tumour had developed a blood supply and had started to grow, so it was time to start treatment. He underwent eight

hours of very risky brain surgery on December 20 to de-bulk his tumour and then in January he started an 18-month course of chemotherapy in a hope to stop the remaining tumour from growing again.

The mums made a surprise presentation to the family last Friday, at Fox Valley. The Dransfield Foundation, developers of Fox Valley, donated a whopping £2000 to the cause.

Sam, whose daughter attends school with young Charlie told Look Local “Charlie is such a wonderful little boy and deserves to be treated”

Sam continued “We would also like to thank Stocksbridge Community leisure centre for allowing us to host a fundraising funday.”

Foxhill Forum paving the way for high quality service delivery in Sheffield

FOXHILL Forum is the first organisation in Sheffield to be awarded Quality For Health, a quality assurance system for organisations who deliver Health & Wellbeing services. Foxhill Forum was established in 1995 primarily serves the Foxhill neighbourhood, and supports residents living in North East Sheffield area. The Forum provides a range of activities, services and opportunities for the benefit of local people across 4 core strands: Health & Wellbeing, Active Involvement, Community Learning and Employability Support. Quality for Health was developed by Voluntary Action Calderdale (VAC) in partnership with Calderdale Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and piloted in Calderdale. Since its launch in 2015, Quality For Health has become a recognised and valued quality award to demonstrate the high standard of services that voluntary and community organisations can and do deliver in Calderdale and beyond. This system provides public sector and wider partners the reassurance that services are robust and delivering safe and quality provision locally and can also benefit voluntary and community sector providers in securing funding and/or new business. At present, Sheffield does not have a local Quality For Health delivery partner but wanting to demonstrate the high quality of their services, Foxhill Forum used their own initiative and actively researched Quality For Health and signed up in 2017.

Mark Wilde, Chief Executive at Foxhill Forum said: “We are delighted to be leading the way in Sheffield as the first organisation to be awarded Quality For Health. Achieving the Quality For Health Standard demonstrates our commitment to providing local people with the very best level of service and delivery, and recognises the hard work undertaken by everyone - volunteers, staff and trustees - congratulations everyone!” Dipika Kaushal, CEO of VAC said: “Foxhill Forum have become our first independent Quality For Health award holder in Sheffield and we are proud to have such a fantastic organisation leading the way for other groups and organisations to complete the award autonomously. Mark and his team have worked exceptionally hard and it is testament to the growing reputation of Quality For Health as an effective quality assurance system for a range of providers. Across the country, Quality For Health is helping numerous groups and organisations to demonstrate and promote the quality of their health and wellbeing services.” To find out more about Foxhill Forum, please visit their website www.foxhill-forum.co.uk If your voluntary and community organisation would like to find out more about Quality For Health and the benefits for organisations of all sizes, please contact email qfh@cvac.org.uk or call 01422 438724/348777.

Stocksbridge to be ‘cut off’ to allow over 400 new homes to be built in Deepcar Yorkshire water announce road closure to be FOR 6 weeks

Yorkshire Water needs to relocate its existing waste water treatment works to the west of Deepcar, and build a new one around a mile to the south of it, next to Ewden clean water treatment works. The new treatment works is essential to ensure it can continue to treat waste water to the highest possible standard before returning it back into the River Don. The plans are part of a much wider strategy, facilitated by Sheffield Council which includes the new 413

home development in Deepcar by Bloor Homes on the former brickworks site. The site has been derelict for many years and is now to be fully reclaimed with public greenspace along the river and the construction of a new road and bridge from Manchester Road. Before Yorkshire Water can build and commission the new treatment works, they need to lay a new sewer along Manchester Road from the current site to the new one. This work requires two-way traffic lights and began in mid-March. Since then

over 200 metres of new sewer have been laid. The temporary traffic lights will remain in place until the 21 July, when Manchester Road will be closed for six weeks. From 2 September, the temporary lights will be back in place until the sewer has been fully installed later in the year. The company is liaising closely with Sheffield Council and will be holding a customer event prior to the closure in the summer for residents to find out more about the diversion routes and impacts on bus routes.

Throughout the project, the company is urging customers to continue to support businesses in Stocksbridge and the Fox Valley Retail Park, where it’s business as usual throughout the works. Are you a business in Stocksbridge, how will your business be affected? Do you commute using the main road? Do you take your children to school this route? How will i get to work on time? Please let us know your concerns and thoughts by sending in your letters to news@looklocal.org.uk

Chairmen of the Board: Karaoke singer Alfredo Gomez (middle) with Chairmen of the Board and their manager (far left) El Paso 1: El Paso’s Nasir Iqbal at the restaurant’s 4th birthday party with famed Macmillan fundraiser John Burkhill.

A Sheffield restaurant singer got more than he bargained for when a million-selling Motown group turned up unannounced. Alberto Gomez – the resident karaoke singer/MC at El Paso Italian/Mexican on Cumberland Street at the bottom of The Moor – was expecting a steady Friday night with his regulars crooning along to the likes of Bon Jovi’s ‘Livin’ On A

Prayer’ and Spandau Ballet’s ‘Gold’. He thought it unusual when a customer with an American accent asked if he had ‘70s soul smash – ‘Give Me Just A Little More Time’. A song that hit No. 3 in the US billboard charts. Alberto began singing away to the popular tune when four dinners got up from their seats and started singing alongside him.

“Wow these guys could sing – I didn’t know what had hit me. The whole restaurant was mesmerised. Three part harmonies, you name it. And they could dance. Wow they could dance.” Alberto added: “It’s not every night you get to perform with a million selling Motown act at the bottom of The Moor!” El Paso’s Nasir Iqbal said it has given his

regulars something to aspire to.

“We’ve had some great times at El Paso but this will definitely go down as one of the highlights. They were great guys and so down to earth. Their spot has definitely raised the bar in terms of what we expect from karaoke singers at our restaurant!”

A new report - Sheffield State of Nature - has brought together a wealth of information on Sheffield’s many natural assets. As well as showcasing the city’s impressive array of natural habitats, the report highlights a pressing need to do more to protect local wildlife whilst recommending ways to achieve this. The report reveals that: Over a third of Sheffield is covered by sites that are designated (i.e. protected to some extent), with the amount positively managed or in a favourable condition for wildlife consistently increasing. Over 100 Local Wildlife Sites, however, are still in need of better management. An impressive 16% of Sheffield is wooded, far higher than the UK average of 10%, and over 90% of Sheffield’s residents have access to a large area of woodland within 4km of their home. Sheffield’s woodland birds are doing well but farmland birds represent 4 of the 5 most severe declines in local bird species, mirroring a national trend. 26 out of Sheffield’s 31 fish species have recolonised or been reintroduced to the city’s rivers and otters have returned to the Don, thanks to tireless efforts to improve its water quality. There is a need to better understand how local wildlife and habitats are faring in the long term.

Despite having a wealth of information, gaps in the data make it difficult for us to identify and report, with confidence, changes over time. Many areas of additional priority habitat are known but unmapped, and so unprotected, leaving them vulnerable to degradation. Ongoing collaboration between local groups, landowners and land managers – as well as cementing the value of wildlife to the public – is key for the future protection of Sheffield’s wildlife and wild spaces. The new Sheffield State of Nature 2018 report - the first of its kind and the exciting culmination of the two-year Nature Counts partnership project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund – represents the coming together of many organisations and individuals to show what we know – and don’t know – about Sheffield’s wildlife and wild places. The project’s aim has been to explore, celebrate and challenge our knowledge of the local environment to produce a snapshot of how nature in Sheffield is faring. The report was developed through the Nature Counts partnership – a collaboration of Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust, Sheffield City Council Ecology Unit, Museums Sheffield (Weston Park Museum), the University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University, Sorby Natural History Society

and Sheffield Bird Study Group. The report showcases the wide variety of habitats that Sheffield boasts, from moorlands and uplands in the west, through to grasslands and farmlands, rivers and reservoirs in the district’s centre, to a wooded and green urban landscape in the east. This mosaic of habitats has the potential to support a rich diversity of species. A key finding of the report is that over 36% of the Sheffield district is covered by sites that are designated (i.e. protected to some extent) with 25% protected at European level. Over 99% of Sheffield’s Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) are in ‘favourable’ or ‘unfavourable recovering’ condition, higher than the UK figure. Over half of Sheffield’s Local Wildlife Sites (LWSs) are in positive conservation management, but over 100 are still not. There is some uncertainty surrounding the future protection of our European-protected habitats and support for the management of farmland habitats postBrexit. The report also showcases the exceptional extent of Sheffield’s woodland. 16% of Sheffield is wooded, far higher than the UK average of 10%. Sheffield supports over a third of South Yorkshire’s woodland, despite covering less than a quarter of the area, and 1,256ha of ancient woodland can be found across the district, 92%

of which is protected to some extent through site designations. Over 90% of Sheffield’s residents have access to a large area of woodland within 4km of their home. Sheffield’s woodland birds are doing well but others are mirroring national declines: 4 out of the 5 most severe declines of local bird species correspond to farmland specialists. Rivers are central to Sheffield’s ecology and draw wildlife into the heart of the city. The report reveals that 26 out of 31 fish species have recolonised or been reintroduced and otters - one of the UK’s most elusive mammals - have returned to the Don thanks to the efforts of many people, and organisations, who have worked hard to reverse the negative impacts of Sheffield’s industrial past on its waterways. It is clear from the report that local threats to wildlife mirror many national trends, such as habitat loss and fragmentation, pressure from development and non-native species introductions. Such threats are all too real with the near-disappearance of priority species such as white-clawed crayfish, turtle dove and water vole. The report recommends the development of targeted conservation action plans for these key indicator and priority species. Promoting the value of local wildlife and raising awareness of habitat and species

management among landowners and land managers will be critical in achieving this. The report also highlights a need to develop strategic plans to minimise the introduction and spread of key invasive non-native species and their impact on local native wildlife and habitats, through effective management as well as raising awareness with the general public. This includes suitable wildlife gardening and the creation and management of urban greenspaces, coupled with the need to carefully balance recreational demand with the provision of undisturbed areas for wildlife. Producing the report has also highlighted just how many people have come together in an effort to understand and protect Sheffield’s wildlife and wild spaces. The River Don is now an impressive natural resource, coaxed back to its former glory through tireless restoration and conservation efforts. Our stunning ancient woodland sites thrive as a haven for both wildlife and people, and urban Sheffield continues to grow greener for the benefit of everyone. For more information and to download the full or summary version of the report, visit wildsheffield. com/stateofnature.

Housing Association prosecuted for dangerous substandard properties Another victory has just been secured in court as Sheffield City Council continues its clampdown on those who flout the rules in the private rented housing sector. Choice Housing Limited and its sole director Mr Robert Mellors pleaded guilty to nine breaches of The Management of Houses of Multiple Occupation Regulations in relation to four properties. Choice Housing Limited is a not for profit Housing Association that houses vulnerable tenants within their properties. Choice Housing Limited was fined £450, ordered to pay £125 costs and a victim surcharge of £30. Mr Robert Mellors was fined £450, ordered to pay £125 costs and a victim surcharge of £30. The court heard how Choice Housing Limited and Mr Mellors showed a complete disregard to the duty of care owed to their tenants

and allowed the properties to fall into dangerous substandard condition. Janet Sharpe, Director of Housing and Neighbourhoods Service at Sheffield City Council, said: “We are still encouraging all private tenants who experience problems to make sure that they let us know. The overwhelming message we are getting from good landlords and tenants is one of thanks and relief that as a council we are exposing the landlords who don’t stick to the rules which tarnishes the whole sector. “Let this be another strong lesson to everyone that enters the private rental market in Sheffield. We can and will act. And we won’t stop until we’ve driven out anyone that doesn’t comply with their legal responsibilities. Remember that we can only act if we know about any issues so we urge people get in touch if they need help and advice.”

Private Standards

Housing

The Council’s Private Housing Standards team are responsible for the regulation of the private rented sector in Sheffield. The team also provide advice and education programmes for landlords to improve their practices. They deal with around 2,000 new enquiries every year relating to the conditions and management of private rented homes. This type of action is part of the Council’s commitment to making sure the private rented sector is safe and well managed, and is a genuine and quality housing option for people in Sheffield. Tenants or landlords wanting advice on any aspect of private renting can contact use for help and advice: www.sheffield.gov.uk/ phs, 0114 273 4680 or email: phs@sheffield. gov.uk

Town mayor farewll thankyou This week will mark the end of my term as Mayor of Stocksbridge and Chair of Stocksbridge Town Council and I have to say I have enjoyed every minute of it. I have met some incredibly wonderful people and shared in celebrations from Easter bonnet parades to The fabulous “For the Fallen” concert at Bolsterstone Church to mark the 100th Anniversary of the end of world war one. I would like to thank Teresa Bisatt the Town Clerk and her assistant Karen at Stocksbridge Town Council for all their help and support and also thankyou to everyone who welcomed me to their celebrations and functions, it really has been a brilliant year.

Good luck to Julie Grocutt the NEW Mayor of Stocksbridge, I hope you enjoy your year as much as I did mine.

Fire Destroys Hard Work done by Volunteers on Wadsley Common

Many thanks

The Fire Brigade was called to the common on Tuesday afternoon after the May Day Bank Holiday to put out a fire that was destroying the quarry area. Areas of heather have been burnt, along with gorse bushes and some conifers. The quarry now looks very unsightly. This is the part of the common which volunteers from North Sheffield Conservation Group, Sheffield Conservation Volunteers and the Wadsley and Loxley Commoners have worked on over the years to help encourage heather to grow and prosper and to bring the area back to a lowland heath. Alan Bailey, Conservation Officer for the Wadsley and Loxley Commoners, said that if the ground is damp, then it probably will not take too long for plants to grow again but as it is a lowland heath, the area could be colonised by a variety of plants and not the heather that did cover the area. Areas of upland heath, as on the moors, are burnt deliberately to remove the old leggy heather and encourage new growth of heather, as this is the only plant that will survive in those cooler areas. John and Anne Robinson, committee members saw the fire, ‘On Tuesday about 3.30 we walked to the bottom car park as we had smelt a lot of smoke and then heard the fire engine. There was one engine there and we walked up to the quarry where most of the right hand bank was alight. The fire officers were using beaters and backpacks with small hoses. Eventually two engines managed to get up to just below the quarry and they were then able to drag hoses up to finish putting out the fire. One of the firemen told us it was probably caused by the hot weather and that they didn’t suspect anything suspicious.’

Greave House Farm I was shocked to read that my friends at Greave House Farm Trust had suffered the loss of their ram, Dandelion, which was killed by a dog let loose near the farm last Saturday. Greave House Farm is a Care Farm supporting adults with learning difficulties and mental health needs and the owners have worked very hard to establish a caring community. On Saturday volunteers and attendees heard a dog barking and a man shouting and the owners later found a blooded Dandelion dead. Had the man had the guts to tell the owners what had happened when he irresponsibly let his dog into the field where the ram guarded the sheep and their lambs, the ram might have been saved. People living in a rural area have an extra responsibility to ensure their dogs are under control near livestock. These animals are part of the livelihood of the owners. This has been a very distressing happening for all who are connected with Greave House Farm Trust. Please, if you are a dog owner be responsible and keep your dog on a lead near livestock. To the man whose dog was the killer, “Shame on you.”

A beautiful picture taken at the Ladybower Reservoir in the Peak District. The good reflection of the water, hills and overcasting tree branches makes this our Photo Of The Week. Well done!

Sheffield Food Festival 2018 set to be the most deliciouS yet!

The event returns to the city centre for its eighth year on the Spring Bank Holiday weekend, with markets open from 10am - 6pm on Sat 26, Sun 27 and Mon 28th May. “We’ve got a packed programme this year so we’re absolutely thrilled to announce the launch of the brand new Sheffield Food Festival Magazine, available from Tuesday 1st May. “The Artisan Market at Sheffield Food Festival features food producers and businesses from around Sheffield and further afield, bringing a range of preserves, oils, cakes, chilli sauces, cookery books, craft beers, gins, pies and loads more for attendees to take home and enjoy. The Artisan Market now spreads from the Peace Gardens, along Town Hall Square and onto Fargate, with over 50 wonderful stalls for you to browse and shop. “Street food was so popular at last year’s event that many of our traders sold out several times over, so this year the Street Food Market has been extended, with 35 different companies to choose from. “The Theatre Kitchen programme is looking

really exciting with plenty of our favourite chefs returning to share more secrets of the trade and showcase great local produce. Each day kicks off with a ‘Ready Steady Cook!’ session with local chefs and food charities battling it out with mystery ingredients. “On Sunday, Justin Rowntree from SweetSpot Hospitality hosts the day. Highlights include with Joe Hunt from the Silver Plate restaurant at Sheffield College showing how to make your own pasta, Olu Babalola from Wing Kings sharing his signature chicken recipe, and Sarah Dadswell from Hilltop Curryhouse making delicious seasonal thoran using produce from a Riverford veg box. “Steve Bailey of BBC Radio Sheffield is our compere for Monday’s programme.“Brand new for this year: Proove Pizza will be hosting the very first Sheffield Food Festival Supper Club in the Theatre Kitchen marquee on the evening of Saturday 26 May. Their chefs have created a bespoke menu which showcases their most popular ingredients with a seasonal twist, whilst introducing new and delicious dishes. Tickets for the Showcase Dinner are limited to 50 people and are £50 per person, including canapés and welcome

drink, 5 courses with 5 paired drinks. Check out Proove’s social media for information on how to get your ticket or call them on 0114 294 5185. Proove will be working with their social enterprise partner Foodinate for this event, so that a proportion of each ticket price goes towards a meal for someone in need. “The big hit from last year’s food festival was undeniably the new Eats, Treats & Beats Festival Village at the top of Fargate. This is our stylish stretch tent bar surrounded by top notch street food, which stays open into the evening for that ‘night market’ vibe. This year, the Village will open for an extra day, with soft opening on Thurs 24th (bar only) and everything in full swing from 11am on Friday 25th May. “Our good friends at Plug have once again curated a fantastic programme of live music and DJs to feed your ears as well as your bellies. Highlights include DJs from the internationally successful Propaganda indie club night on Friday 25th May; a smorgasbord of wonderful local singer songwriters hosted by Plug Live on Saturday 26th May; another soul and funk Sunday with Andy H, Matic Mouth and guests on 27th May; wrapping up with more from Plug Live on Monday 28th.

“We’ll be taking over Orchard Square to create a Pop Up Tea Room, with great cakes and bakes, outdoor seating and table service. On Saturday, local street artist Faunagraphic will be designing a foodie colouring wall for festival goers to unleash their creativity, and there will be some musical treats popping up from time to time to entertain the tea and cake loving audience. “On Saturday 26th May, we will be hosting a one-day programme of talks, discussions, mentoring and advice aimed at food and drink entrepreneurs at all stages of their journey. The Food Futures programme will take place in the Town Hall and features a host of experienced industry professionals sharing their experience and knowledge, and providing opportunities for participants to discuss their own ideas and challenges. Alongside this will be the Innovators Market, with local start ups and microbusinesses showcasing their wares. “Also on Saturday 26 May in the Town Hall, Bullion Chocolate will be hosting The Tastings Table, giving an introduction to the world of craft chocolate, taking you through the amazing journey a cacao bean takes to become a finished bar. Tastings take place at 11am, 1pm and

3pm, in the Town Hall on Saturday 26th May with limited places available. Tickets £5, redeemable on purchases of Bullion Chocolate on the day. Visit https://www.eventbrite. co.uk/o/bullionchocolate-17064686448 to book your place now. “The ever popular Fountain Bar returns to the Peace Gardens, offering a selection of the city’s most popular ales from our enviable range of independent breweries, as well as some from further afield. “It’s essential to keep those little ones entertained so that you can enjoy a day of total food indulgence, that’s why Sheffield Food Festival provides lots of Family Fun kids activities throughout the weekend, with plenty to keep little hands and minds occupied. Come and have your photo taken on the Whirlow Hall Farm tractor, find out more about the bee hive or get involved with craft activities taking place on Millennium Square. From 11am - 3pm each day, there are some great hands-on activities taking place in the Winter Garden. “. Join us for Food for Thought: a thought and action-provoking programme of short talks and workshops in the Winter Garden from 4pm 6pm on each day to explore the issues, challenges and

opportunities to improve the

health,

equality,

economy and sustainability of all things food and drink in Sheffield. This event forms part of the Festival of Debate strand on the theme of Science & Environment and is co-ordinated by Regather Trading Co-op.” Visit the Sheffield Food Festival

Sarnies at heart of British diet Despite all the negatives of the recession, it seems that ready-to-eat sandwiches are now such a big part of our lives that we no longer see them as a luxury. New figures show that we chomped our way through 126 million more prepacked sandwiches last year than in 2008, bringing the total consumed to a whopping three billion sarnies across the UK. And although another three billion lunch boxes were taken to work, more people bought ready-made sarnies from supermarkets to take home - an increase of eight per cent - to put into lunch boxes the next day.

Sandwiches are also highly fashionled with constant changes in the 20 most popular fillings, although chicken salad remains at number one. In fact, chicken is the most popular filling, accounting for about 30% of all readymade sandwiches, or 68,000 tonnes of the stuff The statistics from the British Sandwich Association show that the humble sandwich has come a long way from its origins as a snack for field labourers in the middle ages. However, it did not get its name until 1762 when the 4th Earl of Sandwich called for some cuts of beef to be placed between toasted slices of bread so that

he could continue gambling while he ate. The Earl’s request elevated the humble sandwich from the fields to the tables of the aristocracy and it seems it hasn’t looked back since, becoming the snack of choice for lunches, parties and picnics in its 250year history. In total British consumers managed to munch their way through over 11.5 billion sandwiches last year - with more than half of them made and eaten at home. While the average price of a sandwich is almost £1.91, the record for creating the most expensive sarnie ever is claimed by

chef Tom Bridge whose Lancaster Cheese Sandwich which was sold on ebay in 2006 for £345. The creation included white Umbrian truffles at £1,700 per kilo - an ingredient unlikely to be found in most kitchens. The world’s largest pre-packed sandwich is believed to be one created by Roberts Bakery in Norwich that was 2.5 metres long, packed with Marmite, tuna and mayonnaise and weighing the same as 1,000 loaves. Britain’s biggest sandwich retailer is now the American franchise chain Subway which shot ahead of Tesco, Greggs and Marks & Spencer to take the lead in 2006. But

retailers would need to take note that many consumers buying sandwiches in busy spots refuse to queue for more than two minutes for their lunch or afternoon tea. Despite the huge variety of breads on offer today, nearly 60% of pre-packed sandwiches are made with traditional square sandwich bread while wraps account for just four per cent. Nearly 20% of all sandwiches are purchased in London with the Midlands just behind at 17% followed by Yorkshire on 12% and 11% in Lancashire while people in the North East and South West buy the fewest.

Jim Winship, Director of the British Sandwich Association, says: “It seems that while some consumers reacted to all the negative publicity by making more sandwiches at home, this was short-lived. “The evidence suggests that people get bored with the limited choice of ingredients they have in the home for making up lunch boxes - the choice of fillings in sandwich outlets is generally much greater. “We suspect people also value that extra 10 minutes in bed each morning if they don’t have to make up a lunch box!”.

GRANDAD LEFT AT CHIP SHOP?

Poet Stewart Henderson, songwriter and presenter of BBC Radio 4’s Pick of the Week and author of such well-loved collections as ‘Who Left Grandad at the chip shop’ is coming to Chapeltown to perform his poetry and tell his story of life and faith. Stewart grew up in a divided Liverpool to find his voice in poetry and songwriting. He’s worked with leading musicians and writers like Willy Russell, Roger McGough and Martyn Joseph. He went on to become a poet whose works are now on the National Curriculum, a producer of numerous documentaries on Radio 4 and presenter of Radio 4 favourites like Pick of the Week, and has contributed to many of the Network’s crown jewels such as Broadcasting House, Saturday Live and From Our Own Correspondent. On Friday 18 May at 7.30pm Stewart is coming to the Newton Hall on Cowley Lane in Chapeltown. He’ll be reading some of his favourite poems, and be interviewed about his story – including how his Christian faith inspires and shapes his life and writing. The evening is the latest in the Real Lives series: occasional events organised by local churches. They offer the chance to ask some of life’s big questions, and explore how faith impacts real life today. Revd Rick Stordy of St John’s Chapeltown said today: “Stewart is a gem of a writer and performer: he crafts moving, humorous poetry with the dry and gentle wit of a Scouser. We’re so excited to have someone of his talent and profile coming to Chapeltown. An evening with him will be a real treat. As with every ‘Real Lives’ evening, it’s open to everyone. There will be a warm welcome, live music, a quiz, an inspiring story – and time to meet Stewart and ask questions.”

Chapeltown dancers visit Benidorm Palace Local Sport Stocksbridge Rugby

‘Back’ to basics 20 talented students from JUSTDANCE STUDIOS LTD in Chapeltown and Wath flew out to Spain last bank holiday weekend to perform on the wellknown stage of the Benidorm Palace. 9 years on from Principal Sheryl Moore having worked there as a professional dancer herself she said ‘she was so proud to see her own students perform on the same stage that was once home to her during her dance career.

Partner and fellow principal Nina Sykes also said ‘We couldn’t be happier with the achievements of our pupils as they amaze us time and time again’. JUSTDANCE are constantly providing opportunities for their schools and offering the experiences of a lifetime, the last two years have seen them perform in Disneyland and also the West End. The popular dance school are looking forward to what is next…

Ladies finish on high Oughtibridge WM Ladies ended their season in fine style with back to back home wins. After the disappointment of losing to eventual league champions Nettleham the WM Ladies bounced back against Ollerton in mid week, Jenny Selman, Kathryn Mudge and Laura Watton converting for a hard fought 3-0 win. Rise Park were the visitors for the last game and made it tough with the score level at the break. However, quick fire goals from Watton and Karla Burton calmed the nerves and although Rise Park pulled one back there were further strikes by Lauren Turner and Becky Shaw to round off a 4-1 win. Barring a 15 goal swing by Peterborough in their final game this week the WM Ladies will end as runners up in their inaugural season in the East Midlands Regional Premier League, only 3 points shy of an ambitious Nettleham side who will now enter the Women’s Premier League.

Oughtibridge finish runners up

‘Up the Villa’ High Green Villa completed their fixtures for the season with a 2-1 home win against Caribbean Sports FC. Villa needed to to win the game to ensure second place in the league and promotion to The Premier League. Villa were disappointing with 0-0 at half time . Frustrated with missed chances and hitting the woodwork twice. With time running out Villa took the lead through Mossley, quickly followed by a simple goal following a run from Moorehouse and a tap in from Vella. With the last kick of the game Caribbean scored a late consolation goal. Outstanding for Villa, Burns and Vella. Promotion completes a successful season for the Villa after also reaching The Association Cup Final.

Whilst the majority of the senior 1st XV squad enjoy an end of season break on the Algarve, tickets for the popular end of season awards dinner are selling fast. Interest increased with the news that England World Cup Winner Neil Back will be the guest speaker, following other notable Rugby Union and League giants who have also graced the dinner in recent Years. The hottest tickets in the valley are available from the Rugby Club, priced just 拢40 or Pete Newton (07542 327353) and Jon Findlay (07939 292348) with the event just 2 weeks away (25th May). After the dinner the focus will be on next season, and the search for a new 1st XV Captain will begin as Pete Newton is standing down due to his increased work commitments. The Club thanks Pete publicly for his efforts and looks forward to his continued support for his successor. The early contenders for the role are previous skipper Rhys Keenan and Ricky Rowett on the back of an outstanding playing season. With pre-season training due to commence towards the end of June, there is also the Coaching Team to be confirmed, where Andy Tyers and Keenan again will look to build on their previous good work towards the end of the previous campaign. These appointments will need to be ratified at the Clubs AGM on Saturday 26th May. The players and coaching staff are sure to be pleased to hear that No 8, Ben Brown has had a successful operation to repair his damaged ankle, Connor Brown’s teeth have been rebuilt and Stefan Kazmierski ‘the deepcar express’, troublesome shoulder injury looks to be behind him now and is ready for pre-season too. The Pigs are also on the lookout for new players of any standard, so please register your interest at the clubhouse. Pic: Neil Back - England world cup winning former player
