Tradition continues to shine

Graffiti cleaners urge others to join them

A TEAM of volunteers that clean graffiti from the streets of High Green are appealing for more members of the public to take action themselves. The team, led by parish councillor Dave Ogle, has spent hours removing graffiti tags from the High Green, Chapeltown and Grenoside areas in the last four years. Cllr Ogle said: “It all started when I took my daughter to the park and was shocked to find it in such a mess. I started litter picking but every time you returned it would be as bad as it was before. I decided that if I was going to spend hours volunteering I should at least do something which would make a lasting difference, so I thought why not shift the graffiti?” CHURCHES Together in Stocksbridge and Deepcar (CTSD) are grateful to those who, despite regrettable vandalism, ensured that the Easter Cross shone out above the valley once again this year.

Father and son, John and Wayne Hirst of St Ann’s Church, have taken over management of the electrics from the late Paul Cunningham and with assistance from David Straw of Liberty Steel, including provision of replacement parts and of the power to light it, managed to effect repairs in time for the traditional lighting on Maundy Thursday.

Gratitude is also expressed once more to Greg Godley who allows access across his land. Many people in the valleys either side of the hill and beyond would be sorry to see an end to this local Easter tradition which has now been running for over 50 years.

Cllr Ogle advises anyone wanting to start cleaning to form a constituted group and invest in public liability insurance. He recommends you then apply to the council for a small grant of up to £500 from their ward pot. For advice on starting up a graffiti cleaning group, contact Cllr Ogle at davidalanogle@yahoo. co.uk

THREE GENERATIONS FOR WINDOW COMPANY Call 0114 283 11 00

HISTORY From humble beginnings, leaving school at 15 to start work as a tractor driver and general farm worker with wages of £20 per week back then in 1975, l realised there must be more to life, so I went to work for the first double glazing company set up in the Sheffield area called Radiant Superglaze. After two years working there, learning all the skills, l decided to set up a business of my own, manufacturing double glazing in the old stables at The Coach and Horses pub in Stocksbridge. I soon moved into our existing premises on Manchester Road, Deepcar. The business quickly expanded through doing a good job, offering excellent customer service and value for money. The company soon grew to a £2 million pound turnover that enabled me to buy my own factory and I won the Yorkshire Television Young Business Man of the Year Award back in 1983. We are still going strong at our existing premises we bought in 1978. 40 years ago. We are a family run business, joined by my son ten years ago and hopefully his son will be joining us in a few years time.

3 Generations: This year will be the 40th Anniversary

WHY ARE WE SO SUCCESSFUL? l put that down to having old fashioned customer values, the customer is king at our firm, we stick to our old fashioned values, courtesy and customer service - we are customer friendly. Nothing is too much trouble for our customers. After all, it is the customer who pays our wages. When you contact us, you talk to a real person, not a computer, you don’t wait on the line trying to get through to a real person. We are a forward looking company offering top quality ‘A’ Rated energy saving windows as standard. We are also introducing new products to satisfy our growing number of thousands of customers. 95% of our work is within a ten mile radius of Deepcar but we have travelled further on recommendation - as far as London, Liverpool, Scotland and even as far as the Isle of Man. We have thousands of satisfied customers. With our company, you get the old fashioned customer service with the most modern, up to date products. In fact, the Eurocell system we use is, without doubt, the best on the market. Ring now for a free quotation or call at our showroom to see the full range of products on display. Maxim and Lauryn claim debating prizes BARNSLEY Sixth Form College students Maxim Fowler and Lauryn Healey have won individual awards at the Debating Matters Yorkshire Championship.

Maxim, 16 and from Silkstone, is studying A Levels in Drama and Theatre Studies; English Language and Literature; and History, received the Best Individual Prize for his contribution to a debate entitled ‘Monuments to controversial historical figures should remain’. His efforts earned him a copy of The Routledge Guidebook to Mill on Liberty, a signed copy of Dr Paul Wetherly’s book Political Ideologies and a Thomas Edison quote notebook. Lauryn, 18 and from Penistone, is studying A Levels in Government and Politics; History and Maths, claimed the Leeds Salon Special Individual Prize despite not being involved in a debate, based on her excellent audience contributions and questions that

she posed to the teams. The judges selected Lauryn as the student who most embodied the spirit of Debating Matters and she received a copy of Joanna Williams’ book Academic Freedom in an Age of Conformity: Confronting the Fear of Knowledge. Maxim said: “I was very proud to win the award, especially as I came into the debating team at a late stage. I prepared for the debate by looking at different arguments around the subject and thinking of key questions which would need to be answered by both sides. The skills I learnt will be very useful in future.” Lauryn added: “The competition was a really good experience. I want to study politics at university so it was useful to see how other people approached their debates and the different angles they used in putting forward their case. I did a lot of research on the debate topics so I was able to get involved by asking questions from the audience.”

Volunteers needed to support children in care SHEFFIELD City Council is asking volunteers to come forward who want to make a difference to the lives of Sheffield’s young people in care. They are currently looking for volunteers to befriend and visit young people in care. The volunteers, known as independent visitors, will go out once a month with a young person to do fun

activities to help build a helpful, positive and consistent relationship. Tom Ashford, 37, is an independent visitor and has been volunteering for over a year. He said: “I decided to become an independent visitor after hearing about the scheme through a friend. “Positive, consistent role models are so important for young people and it’s something most of us take for granted.

Spending just a few hours a month doing something they enjoy can make a huge difference. I really enjoy hearing their stories and I get to do fun activities too. “I would strongly encourage anyone with an interest in sharing some positive experiences with a young person to volunteer. It’s only a few hours per month and I find it very rewarding.

Carly Speechley, Director of Children and Families at Sheffield City Council said: “We are looking for fun, reliable and enthusiastic volunteers who have a genuine interest in making a difference to the lives of Sheffield young people in care. “Providing young people with consistent, positive adult child relationship is so important for our young people. This

relationship can involve anything from playing football in the park to seeing the latest films or new things the young person wants to do. “If you are over 21 and interested in applying please do get in touch.” If you are interested in becoming an independent visitor, please email angela. taylor@sheffield.gov.uk or call Angela on 0114 2288522.

THINKING HATS ON FOR CHARITY BARNARDO’S is asking teachers, child carers, parents and pupils across Yorkshire to sign up for Hat Day and wear a fun hat to raise money to support the UK’s most vulnerable children. The charity’s fundraising Hat Day celebrated on Friday May 18 encourages children to wear or make a hat signifying who or what they would like to be or do when they grow up. It could be a firefighter, police officer, chef, astronaut, medic or sportsperson. There are no rules or limits to the imagination – they may want to be a wizard or superhero! If a child does not know what they want to be they can decorate their hat with something they are passionate about such

as a sport, art, dancing shoes, or musical instrument.

The idea behind the fun is to raise money for the UK’s leading children’s charity to help give thousands of disadvantaged children a better future. When they go into school, playgroup or children’s centre on May 18, parents and carers can make a voluntary donation of £1 to £2 to Barnardo’s. Barnardo’s Chief Executive, Javed Khan said: “Children are full of surprises and this is a fun way of allowing their imaginations to run wild in a way that will be inspiring, educational and raise money to help transform the lives of children who desperately need our support.

sources and ideas to ensure your fundraising Hat Day will be a huge success and help some of the UK’s most vulnerable children.” To register visit our website. Here you’ll find everything you need to make the event a success at your school, nursery, playgroup or children’s centre. Our resources section has school posters, sample letters for parents and hat-making guides. To help with ideas, Barnardo’s is launching a separate ‘Top Hat’ competition for teachers/parents for best hat in the run up to Hat Day, with a poll to decide the winner on the Barnardo’s Community Fundraising facebook page.

Pavement resurfacing works in Stocksbridge and Deepcar PAVEMENT resurfacing works are to be undertaken in the Deepcar and Stocksbridge areas at the end of April and throughout May.

The specific dates of work for each street will be displayed on the on-street signs in advance of work starting.

Working hours will be 7am to 7pm, or 9.30am to 2.30pm near schools, on Monday to Friday. The Streets Ahead team don’t work bank holidays.

A spokesperson for Streets Ahead said: “This work will last approximately four weeks. Although the roads will remain open we may need to restrict access at times to carry out the work safely.

Although the roads will remain open Streets Ahead may need to restrict access at times to carry out the work safely. There will be no on-street parking and vehicle access to properties may be restricted during working hours.

“As our schedule is heavily dependent on the weather we are currently unable to give an exact start date for the work. Please look out for the temporary road signs that will be displayed five days before work starts, confirming the dates of work and parking restrictions.

Film produced to celebrate cleaner rivers and increased fish populations in Yorkshire’s rivers THE Environment Agency working with its partners have published a film to celebrate World Fish Migration Day on Saturday April 21. Our Rivers: Recovery and Renewal includes beautiful scenery of valleys and rivers across Yorkshire, including the Don. The film features representatives from the Environment Agency, Yorkshire Water, Rivers Trusts, and local school children discussing the improvements made to river water quality in recent years and the return of migratory fish such as salmon, lamprey and eel and coarse fish such as barbel, chub and dace. Mark Scott, Yorkshire Area Director for the Environment Agency, said: “The Our Rivers: Recovery and Renewal film has been published to celebrate the biennial World Fish Migration Day.

“Over the two decades the Environment Agency has been established we have worked tirelessly to improve the water quality in our rivers and bring back the native fish who inhabited the rivers of Yorkshire centuries ago prior to the pollution sustained from the industrial revolution, when the main purpose of the rivers was seen as being to help the county’s burgeoning industry. “In recent years our work has started to come to fruition and pay dividends with vast improvements being made to Yorkshire’s rivers. Fish are coming back to our rivers in large numbers. “We have even had a number of sightings of salmon jumping at weirs near our major towns and cities, such as at Knottingley in Leeds and Rotherham.

“To provide us with the access we need, please can you cut back any overhanging vegetation such as hedges, bushes or trees that are overgrowing onto the pavement back to the edge line. Please note, any vegetation that is still over growing onto the pavement when we start work will be cut back by our team and you may be charged for this work. “There will be no on-street parking and vehicle access to properties may be restricted during working hours. “Please let our on-site supervisor know if you need vehicle access to your property for urgent reasons.

“Pedestrian access and access for emergency vehicles will be available at all times. Vehicles left on the street during the restrictions may be towed away and you will need to pay a fee to have your vehicle released. “We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. For the latest updates please follow us on Twitter @sccstreetsahead.” The streets affected are Birch Tree Road, Maple Grove, Cedar Road and Robertshaw Crescent from 7am to 7pm and Pot House Lane from 9.30am to 2.30pm.

Friends complete Three Peaks for Papyrus

“In the coming years, with our partners including Yorkshire Water, Rivers Trusts, local authorities and the Heritage Lottery Fund, we will continue to install fish passes at weirs so that fish such as salmon and sea trout, as well as coarse fish, can migrate up and downstream for spawning.” Projects to restore Atlantic salmon, sea trout, and eel and improve coarse fish populations in rivers across Yorkshire have been carried out in recent years and these will bear fruit in the coming years. This film celebrates these projects and emphasises that healthy and clean rivers are a wonderful natural asset that supports our economy and sense of place. To watch the film go to the Environment Agency YouTube channel - www.youtube.com/ user/EnvironmentAgencyTV

A TEAM of five friends completed the Three Peaks Challenge for a charity for the prevention of young suicide on Saturday. Jackie Carlton, Kerry Cook, Claire Illingworth, Melissa Stansfield and Lynn Dixon are

a group of friends and all live in Chapeltown, Birdwell or Barnsley. Money from the sponsorship is still coming in but so far they have raised £1,250 for the Papyrus charity.

Jackie told Look Local: “It has to be done under 12 hours and the weather was kind to us, thank goodness. But we have blisters to prove we did it too! We all had a great day and would recommended it to challenge yourself.”

Dr Billing – the people of Deepcar, Stocksbridge and the surrounding areas no longer feel safe in their homes, out shopping or in their community. This situation is not acceptable. I have set up a petition on change.org to highlight to you and others the strength of feeling in our community. You can take a look at it here https://www.change.org/p/ dr-billing-police-and-crime-commissionar-forsouth-yorkshire-deepcar-police-station-staffedby-police-officers-again Over 700 people have signed this petition in 12 hours. Our community had grown considerably over the last 20 years and many more homes are to be built very soon. Yet the numbers of Police Officers has been cut. This situation is only going to worsen.

Dear Dr Billings (Police and Crime Commissioner for South Yorkshire Police), We are expected to pay council tax like other residents of this city. We demand the Police Service I am writing to you regarding the decision that was and protection from crime that we deserve. I made to close Deepcar Police Station and many implore you to review the closure of Community other community policing hubs within South Police Stations and to re-open Deepcar Police Yorkshire. I can totally appreciate that your job is very difficult Clare Wilson as you have to decide on priorities for policing over a very wide area with increasingly limited funds. Won’t get fooled again Judging by the amount of leaflets through my door I can tell it must be election time again. I have always voted, though sometimes reluctantly, and like many I put my faith in the Liberal Democrats in 2010 - but then they betrayed us by going in with the Tories. I thought that they might have by now learnt their lesson, so I was shocked to read that Lib Dem leader Vince Cable said that under no circumstances would he support Labour if there was another hung parliament – meaning they are happy to go with or let in the Tories again. This is incredible. Have the Lib Dems learnt nothing? I wouldn’t trust them in government and I wouldn’t trust them to run our council. I won’t be fooled again by the Lib Dems. It’s not too late to make a will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local consultant of 10 years experience. We are experts in helping people arrange their wills, trusts and lasting powers of attorney. I specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional estate planning services, but with a personal touch. I offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:

• Making a basic will • Setting up lasting powers of attorney • Protecting your home from care fees • Pre–paid funeral plans Having a Will in place ensures your assets go to who you choose. It makes the whole process much easier for the people you leave behind and it puts in black and white exactly what you want to happen, avoiding any misunderstanding or arguing. Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able

to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation

to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and Collective Legal Solutions are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

After the game manager Ian Richards summed up: “That was a really effective performance today, I’m really pleased with how the players applied themselves and learned and listened from Wednesday and that’s why I love managing this group of players, that’s why I love what I do. “The success we had came from simple instructions of what we could have done better in terms of the first half at Harrogate Railway.

“It was a similar situation, the pitch was lively, bobbly and dry they played the same formation as Harrogate and we talked about how we’d start better and how we’d get on top of the game and they did that absolutely brilliantly. “The midfield three of Duncan Richards, Ash Ellis and Danny Howes worked really well together, in particular Ash was excellent, as he has been for most of the season, which allowed us to get on top. “We were clinical in front of goal, all the goals were similar in the fact we were pressing high up the pitch, which allowed both full back to get really high so when the ball did come out we put it in to good areas.”

OUGHTIBRIDGE War memorial were awarded the three points in the Blades Super Draw when opponents Woodhouse could not get a team together. This now leaves third placed Oughtibridge needing just the one point this Thursday in their home game against Cobden with a 6.15pm kick off to be assured of promotion. First placed Norton Sportsman entertain Chapeltown RBL on the same evening at the Niagara Sports ground before the War Memorial visit Norton Sportsman on Sunday with an 11am kick off. Only four points separate the top three and with just four games to go and Chapeltown are still to play Oughtibridge this week and this could have a big say in who goes up as champions.

BARNSLEY College’s Sports Academy returns home with another trophy from a prestigious international football competition in Spain. The under-19 male team were undefeated throughout the German-founded Komm Mit International Whitsuntide Tournament in Catalonia, Spain, beating teams from Germany and Romania to secure a place in the semi-finals. Unfortunately, the team were beaten 4-3 on penalties, however the students used their team spirit to beat Ludwieller, Germany, to secure third place and return home with a trophy. Tom Toulson, 18, of Doncaster Road, a Sport student and captain of the football team, said: “We’ve

had a couple of setbacks this season and a couple of defeats but we grouped together as a team, worked hard to pick ourselves up and achieved good results abroad.” Luke Forgione, Performance and Athlete Development Coach at Barnsley College, added: “The tournament was a huge success, and the students loved the opportunity and experience gained from it. The performances from the team were outstanding throughout the tournament, considering the heat and number of games played during the four days of competition. “Hopefully we can go one step further next year and be crowned champions.”

Barnsley Sports Academy offers fantastic facilities and a team of expert and specialist coaches supporting talented sports performers in any discipline. Academies include Football (male and female), Rugby, Netball, Basketball, Refereeing, Cricket and Individual Athlete Academy. MORE TOP NAMES ADDED TO TOUR STARTING LIST THE 2018 edition of the Tour de Yorkshire is almost upon us with the communities welcoming the race bracing themselves for the glut of visitors. Olympic road race champion Greg van Avermaet has announced that he will make his Tour de Yorkshire return. The 32-year-old finished seventh in his only previous appearance, the 2015 race which was the inaugural staging of the event. Van Avermaet has won two Tour de France stages and will

represent the BMC Racing Team. Last year, the Belgian rider finished ahead of Chris Froome to top the end-of-year UCI WorldTour rankings. Mark Cavendish will join the Rio gold medallist, making his return from injury at the event. Welcome to Yorkshire chief executive Sir Gary Verity, who also helped take the Tour de France to the county, said Van Avermaet “will no doubt animate the four days of racing”.

The race starts on Thursday May 3 with a stage from Beverley to Doncaster, and Friday’s second stage takes the riders from Barnsley to Ilkley. Saturday’s third stage is from Richmond to Scarborough with the finale on Sunday May 6 starting in Halifax and finishing in Leeds. “The final stage should certainly suit him and I look forward to seeing him in action,” said Verity. A two-day women’s race will take place on May 3 to 4, preceding the men’s race and starting and finishing in the same towns.

SPECTATORS URGED TO PLAN JOURNEYS AHEAD FOR THE TOUR DE YORKSHIRE WITH thousands of people expected to watch the 2018 Tour de Yorkshire and Asda Tour de Yorkshire Women’s Race live on Thursday May 3 and Friday May 4, getting around parts of the region will be busier and some bus services will be temporarily diverted. Passengers travelling in Doncaster, Rotherham and Barnsley are advised to plan their journey ahead. “This great event attracts thousands of spectators from near and far each year and we expect more people than usual to rely on public transport as they come and watch the race in South Yorkshire. Some bus routes will be directly affected over the two days the region plays host to the race, so we’re asking passengers to plan ahead before travelling”, says Tim Taylor, Customer Services Director at South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE). “During events like these people often choose to leave their cars at home and switch to buses and trains as the best way to travel. We’d like to see more people make that a permanent change or at least try it for a few days a week for all or part of their commute. We also want to see people

getting inspired to take their bikes out and integrate cycling into their daily commute. It adds to a healthier lifestyle, it’s cheaper and good for the environment.” In its fourth year, the international bike race has expanded from three to four stages and will cover all four corners of Yorkshire, taking in 169 villages, towns and cities. Roads on and connected to the Tour de Yorkshire route in Doncaster, Rotherham and Barnsley are anticipated to be closed on a rolling basis lasting no more than one hour, apart from the start and finish lines, when the closures will last for longer. Spectators should try to use public transport to get them to the best viewing points on the route. Bus journeys will take longer and some may take a different route than their usual one so passengers who normally travel around the area are advised to plan their journey ahead at www.southyorkshiretravel.com/tdy. Service updates will also be available at Barnsley and Doncaster interchanges and at Travel South Yorkshire twitter account @tsyalerts on the day itself.

Marathon effort from runners

Local Sport Emma and Steve Stead relax after a job well done at London PENISTONE Footpath runners had 10 competitors take part in the UK’s premier running event, the iconic London Marathon at the weekend. Run in brutally hot conditions, with the highest temperatures the race had seen in its 37-year history, the race was not one for setting personal bests, but for demonstrating mental and physical resilience. First back for the club was the indefatigable Gary Dean who finished in 3:29.30. Gary Dean was run-

ning his 26th marathon overall, and his 18th London Marathon. Simon Pike, who was also running in memory of Joe Dale, a Penistone Grammar School pupil who tragically died last year, managed 3:39.03, Faye Williams earned herself a good for age time with 3:46.24. The other finishers were Martin Cooper 3:51.29; Megan Button 4:00.35; Emma and Steve Stead, running on behalf of Barnsley Heads Together, 4:06.02; Bill Phillips 4:12.55; Becky West 4:53.49.

Julia Johnson ran 44:47 at the Bolton 10k, to finish sixth lady overall and to run comfortably inside the first-class road standard for her age group. The Kinder Downfall race was run on Sunday near Hayfield in Derbyshire over 9.6 miles with approximately 1,800 feet of climbing. First back for the club was Richard Mackie in a time of 1:25.04. Next back was Dan Limb in 1:28.24. First female back was Lesley Parker, finishing fourth female overall 1:39.17. Second woman back was Helen Wright in 1:50.20.

At the local Hartcliff Hill race run over 2.5 miles with 500ft of climb, Damian Kilpin finished 4th in 19:15 with Lee Storey eighth in 20:45 and Robin Clough 10th in 21:15. Steve Storey was first V60. Laura Gill finished second lady overall, Tom Fryers first U17 with Julie Darigala third lady and first F40. Hugh Mackie was second U17 and Teresa Wall first F60. Both men and women won the team prizes.

War Memorial Women on a fine run Kettering Town Ladies 0 Oughtibridge WM Ladies 3

OUGHTIBRIDGE War Memorial Ladies continued their title push, following up last week’s 6-0 win at Mansfield with a 3-0 win at Kettering. In an even first half the War Memorial were grateful for a couple of great saves by Coran Wright, and

some solid defending, as the home side pushed on but it was Kathryn Mudge who broke the deadlock on the half hour meeting a good cross and planting a sweet left foot half volley in the bottom corner.

The second half was a little more comfortable but the WM Ladies couldn’t find a finish to round off their pressure until Karla Burton calmly lobbed the keeper on 66 minutes to round off the scoring.

Within two minutes Mudge doubled the advantage, drilling in a penalty given for a needless handball.

Kettering pushed and found a solid back four and keeper in their way, Chloe Rodgers showing particularly neat footwork under pressure to clear danger and set up another WM attack.

So, another fine victory on the road, the games are coming thick and fast now with Rise Park away on Thursday April 26 followed by a vital game against league leaders Nettleham at the War Memorial on Sunday April 29, with a 2pm kick off.

Birdwell hold two open events LAST Saturday saw the first of Birdwell Wheelers’ two Open Time Trials. The 10 Mile event saw 83 riders complete the distance. The winner of the Taylor Trophy for fastest man was Simon Beldon in 20.19. Fastest woman and winner of the Jim Carr Trophy was Kirsty Bramley in 24.01. Winner of the road bike event was Andrew Newby in 23.24. One notable ride was by Birdwell Wheelers’ Tina Oakes who recorded a time of 29.20 breaking the 30-minute barrier in her first ever open event. Other Birdwell times were John Woodhouse 29.41, Bob Waterhouse in his comeback ride 29.14, Greg Godley 26.09 and Trevor Mayne 22.32. Barnsley Road Club were represented by Wayne Gregory 27.05, John Catley 24.05, Robert Keyte 26.44, Gary Thornton 24.16, Philip Tyas 24.12 and Darren Gough 2214. Robert Barnard of Team Cystic Fibrosis finished in 23.46. Sunday’s club run to Goole saw Steve Myatt, Rodger Holmes, Dave Hudson, Paul Mynett Phil Adams, Austin D Watson, Chris Jenkins , Tony Lodge and guest Hayden John Hatfield set off from Brewers Fayre, Wombwell and complete a 75 mile round trip. STEELS LOSE OUT TO PETERBOROUGH

Local Sport

Stocksbridge PS 1–2 Peterborough Sports STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels slipped to a 2-1 defeat at home to Peterborough Sports on Saturday. Bright sunshine welcomed the teams out at the Look Local Stadium as Steels looked to build on the terrific performance against Bedworth four days earlier. Manager Chris Hilton made one change bringing in Matt Reay for Richard Stirrup at the heart of the back four.

It was no surprise when Steels went behind, Lawler puttin the away side ahead from the penalty spot, tucking his shot to Reay’s left side and into the net after Rhodes had fouled the skilful Peterborough number 11 Moreman on the edge of the box. The performance so far was lacklustre and lethargic from Steels. Peterborough always had spare men in midfield as a 4-2-4 formation was restricting any sort of progressive play from the back.

The game was set up as a typical end of season fixture with nothing to play for but pride, against the first ever visit to Bracken Moor of mid table Peterborough Sports.

Consequently balls were being knocked long and although Peterborough’s defence had a couple of scares they dealt with counter attacks quite comfortably.

Typical end of season fixture is just how it panned out with sloppy passing and complacency evident early on, which by enlarge, continued through the first half. Poor ball retention from Steels was a surprise after such a positive display against Bedworth and the lack of consistency a concern.

The second half started brighter with Steels forcing three corners from the kick off. And the home side drew level on 50 minutes when defenders did not clear their lines after Rory Coleman’s left footed in swinger was headed to the edge of the box. It was Coleman himself who had drifted into the box and he drove the ball hard, low and clean to the keeper’s right hand post from 10 yards.

The ball just kept coming back after the midfield were giving the ball away and the frontmen could not hold onto it, allied to this most of the second balls were being picked up by a red shirted Peterborough player.

Steels had kept the ball alive well and were now looking a little more threatening. Litchfield caused problems going forward, Lumsden had a one v one

opportunity that the goalkeeper smothered at his feet as he just failed to strike it home. However, the game again became scrappy for long periods of play and neither team found the conditions easy to fathom. Ruthven shot well wide from 18 yards after he found himself on the end of a route one counter by Steels. Coleman played it long to Poulton who had headed it into the path of Ruthven. Disappointingly, a simple long straight ball over the top of the Steels centre backs on 80 minutes found Peterborough’s lone frontman Jones in a race to the bouncing ball with Reay, the home goalkeeper really second favourite. Jones calmly lobbed the ball high over the advancing Reay bouncing into the roof of the net. With Steels approaching the final three games in one week it is surely going to be a test of character for the players, hopefully they can find the spirit and determination ability and knowhow that they have showed, more often than not, over the course of the season, to gain points to finish as high up the league as possible.

Hawks cut Raiders down to size Sheffield Hawks 20-14 Cutsyke Raiders

AS the season starts to get going, and the squad is nearly up to strength, Sheffield Hawks are starting to deliver on their potential. For large parts of this game Hawks totally outplayed the Raiders, soaked up pressure and then clinically applied their pace and ability to score when the chances came. The first 15 minutes saw no tries but excellent rugby from both sides. Sets were completed and the defences were in charge. Will Burns, Reuben Kateregga and Tom Clarke showed strength and

aggression in the tackle throughout this match and it was good to see Clarke taking a string leadership role amongst the forwards. Notice about the Hawks attacking potential was served in the first 30 seconds with Harry Scott, back from injury, running the kick off back 70 metres. All round the team there was aggressive defence and attack and Scott, as so often is the case, was at the heart of it. A strong drive from Clarke, followed up by two rolling rucks allowed Scott to score under the posts after a slick han-

dling movement out wide. Corey Hall, as ever, converted. Rattled, the Raiders kept knocking on and fumbling their passes which allowed Hawks two sets to send Spencer Poppleton over in the corner. A defensive mix up allowed the Raiders a soft try at the end of the half. At this point Hawks were dominant. The second half followed a similar pattern to the first. Hawks had lost the talismanic Scott for a 10-minute spell on the bench and, strong as their defence

was, his absence held no fears for this tough tackling team. Hawks crossed the line three times, though only one try was given. That came from a sustained period of pressure after a huge hit from Kateregga had induced a knock on. Bailey Thompson proved to be a thorn in the side of the Raiders and crossed twice only for the referee to unluckily call play back. Increasingly Cutsyke tried to provoke a response from their players and this ag-

gression affected the composure of both sides in the last ten minutes with two incidents of poor behaviour that lead, ultimately, to a red card given to a single player on both teams. Cutsyke scored two late tries, against the run of play, but at no point were the Hawks under real risk of losing this match. This was an excellent performance against a team higher in the league.

PIGS RELEGATED DESPITE IMPROVEMENT STOCKSBRIDGE BATTLE AGAINST PROMOTED OLD OTLIENSIANS BUT COME UNSTUCK Old Otliensians 34-14 Stocksbridge RUFC A WARM and sunny afternoon greeted the travelling blue army at Otley however, high flying Otliensians, already promoted, proved too strong for the visitors and Stocksbridge Rugby slipped to a creditable 34-14 defeat, thus condemning the gallant Piggies to relegation. “We’ve got some mojo back,” said interim coach Andy Tyers. “We have some culture and are looking like a team again.” Stocksbridge shocked the home team with a positive, enthusiastic start and were unlucky not to score, Brown went close and Whitaker was held up just short of the line.

Crampton & Moore

There were several penalties as Otley tried fair means or foul to defend their try line, and they were fortunate to escape any further sanctions by a rather lenient official. Skipper Newton pounced on a loose ball and made good ground, but his final pass was just out of reach of the supporting Sam Whitaker.

Perhaps Otley realised that Stocksbridge were not going to roll over, and exploiting a wide pitch and some questionable defending ran in three tries in quick succession. Hooker Ricky James succumbed to an ankle injury and was replaced by Gary Woodcock, whilst Joe Smith was introduced to spell the hard working Lewis Bowman. The unfortunate Whitaker was harshly sin binned for a high tackle just before half time, with a 24-0 scoreline in favour of the home side. Coach Keenan again reminded the team of the game plan and objectives during the interval however, the home side started the second half Samsung better and recorded their fifth try. QE49Q7FAM

the Pigs forward with accurate field kicking and scrum half Frith finding some good form with his own game as well as keeping the hard working forwards on their game. Otliensians had a man sin binned for delaying a penalty, and the plucky visitors were rewarded when Frith took a quick tap and fed Whitaker who crashed over from short range to get Stocksbridge on the score board. Bowskill tagged on the conversion. The next score was a beauty, superb interplay involving Newton, Westby and that man Whitaker again, offloading skilfully to the supporting Booth to finish off, easily converted by Bowskill. Both teams were suffering in the heat and although Ensians finished the scoring against a tiring and fatigued Stocksbridge defence, the visitors actually won the second half 14-10. Brown was sin binned late in the game for some careless footwork and a final score of 34-14 to Otliensians saw the home side promoted and the visitors relegated. The Bradfield Brewery Man of the Match award went to Adam Frith for a mature performance, Sam Whitaker and the industrious Ricky Rowett were also in the frame in a gallant overall display from the whole team. “It’s a shame it’s the end of the season,” said coach Keenan afterwards, “We are definitely heading in the right direction and improving week on week, which reflects the effort the lads are giving during our training sessions.” Stocksbridge Rugby complete their league programme this Saturday with a re-arranged home clash against mid-table Airborough.
