ARTIST SPREADS ‘DON’T SUFFER’ MESSAGE PIECES of art have been mysteriously appearing around Stocksbridge and artist Jarrad Leary has obviously been busy with his latest creation appearing on the Grandfather Fox roundabout at Fox Valley, although it quickly disappeared. But the work has a very serious message, one that Jarrad hopes his guerrilla-style campaign will help to get across. Daubed on the edge of the works featuring a number of celebrities is the word Samaritans, along with the phone number for the charity who are known for talking to people who are having suicidal thoughts. Jarrad has called it ‘Don’t Suffer’ with Kurt Cobain and Marilyn Monroe among the stars depicted. He says that although the campaign has started in his hometown of Stocksbridge, he is hoping to eventually roll it out all over the city. The 30-year-old said: “It was with an extremely heavy heart that I chose to start this project. I am not so naive to think that a piece of art can change a person’s thought process, or even offer a shoulder. “However, imagery can certainly reignite the notion that there is so much hope. Whether it is you who needs help, or knows someone who is suffering... If these pictures can be left where I put them, I’d be grateful. I also realise that may not happen. “I know exactly what a tragedy like this does to a person, as the nature of this stems

from my own childhood. The anxiety, the anticipation, waiting for the inevitable. It shatters their world and they spend their entire life picking up the pieces. I simply cannot sit back and watch peoples lives be affected in the way that mine was. I do this because my heart breaks for the friends and families, every single time. Forget yesterday, ignore today and think tomorrow. Don’t suffer.” As well has hoping to raise awareness of suicide, much like the football match adorning last week’s Look Local, Jarrad says that there is a whole spectrum of other problems it could cover. “For me, this covers the whole spectrum. From mental health, caused by genetics, through to addiction, to anxiety and depression. Through to the worst case scenario of suicide. “When I was a teenager and struggling with what was happening at home, I phoned Samaritans and they were amazing. So kind, so professional and I really felt that they deserved a mention in my art. I’ve been an artist now for about six years. “I’ve sold pieces in Europe and America and I can honestly say, it isn’t half as rewarding as doing something like this that may help people. Money doesn’t make you happy, it just helps. “That’s why this project is nothing to do with money. It’s to get in peoples heads. The people that need it or know the people that need it.”

Film screening shows how community opposed fracking ON Thursday May 17 ‘The Bentley Effect’, a film showcasing how organised community action defeated the powerful fracking industry in the small Australian Valley of Bentley, is being presented at The Venue, Stocksbridge, by Frack Free Penistone and Stocksbridge. There are two showings with a matinee show from 1pm to 3pm and an evening show from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. The evening will also host a talk from Carol Gibson who will be sharing her experience of living in Marsh Lane near Eckington where chemicals giant Ineos has applied for planning permission to erect a drilling rig up to 60m tall and drill around 2,400m down into the ground to investigate the suitability of the rock for fracking. Carol’s home is within 500m of the site and she

has joined with other residents and anti-fracking demonstrators in demonstrating her opposition to the site. There have been over 3,000 objections lodged against Ineos’s application for planning from local residents. The threat of the fracking industry to this area comes not just from the Petroleum Exploration and Development Licences (PEDL) which cover most of the North of England, and under which Ineos and other fracking companies can apply for planning permission to undertake disruptive and environmentally damaging seismic surveys, but also from the potential impact of the disposal of fracking waste. One of only four facilities in the country licenced to dispose of the millions of tons of effluent which are a by-product of fracking is based right in the heart

of Ecclesfield. The extraction of shale gas through fracking is a 24/7/365 endeavour producing tanker after tanker laden with waste which would be driven from sites across the North to create a bottleneck of roads around Ecclesfield - the impact to the local infrastructure and to the air quality in the area would be measurably negative. A spokesperson from Frack Free Penistone and Stocksbridge said: “It is important for us to understand as community the potential damage that could be caused to our community, both directly and indirectly, if the frackers are allowed to ply their trade. Please come and see the film and hear Carol’s personal account, and how what has happened both abroad and in the UK directly impacts you.”

Defibrillation and good quality bystander CPR are the two biggest factors in survival rates from cardiac arrest and it is hoped that by funding a CPAD it will one day make the difference to someone in the community. The initial £999 will be used to apply for a community grant for a subsidised cost form the Yorkshire Ambulance Service Charitable Fund and if successful would provide the CPAD and the locked cabinet. The fundraising will continue above the £999 to enable the group to provide the ongoing costs of maintenance, replacement pads, batteries and insurance. Any extra money raised could potentially fund a second defibrillator and to put back into the community by providing CPR and basic life support events. They’ll be hosting a fundraiser at Oughtibridge War Memorial cricket ground on May 20 from 12pm to 4pm with a bake sale, raffle and the bar will be open

Thorpe Hesley food and drink festival expands horizons with additional stalls ON Monday May 7 from 11am at Trinity Community Centre and Holy Trinity Church in Thorpe Hesley, there is a great community event. In previous years the event was a food and drink festival but this year organisers have changed it to a Spring Festival so that more attractions and stalls can be added.

Road safety charity supports bereaved families ROAD Safety charity Brake was able to deliver their services to bereaved families in South Yorkshire due to funding provided by the South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner. Dr Alan Billings provides funding to a number of organisations as part of his commissioning budget and Brake secured £2,000 to continue their work with families whose loved ones have lost their lives on the roads of South Yorkshire.

But foodies needn’t worry! There will be a licensed bar selling real ales and a prosecco bar with hot food, cakes, teas and coffees. A wide variety of stalls, raffles, tombolas and games together with maypole dancing will be there to keep all ages entertained.

In a report issued by Brake, they detail how the £2,000 was utilised over 2017-18. The funding provided 80 bereavement packs and 51 phone calls and emails with a dedicated point of contact in the police force. Their national helpline provided direct support for 25 people involved in 15 crashes.

In the church there will be floral and craft displays depicting well known Bible stories – ‘A Journey through the Bible’. Entry to the event is £1 per adult with children free. For more information or to book a stall please contact Kay Hester on 07708421017.

NORFOLK ARMS CHARITY WALK STAFF from the Norfolk Arms in Chapeltown are taking part in a charity walk to raise funds for Weston Park Hospital. On Tuesday April 24, Tom Bell and Chloe Finch will lead a small group of friends on a walk from the cancer hospital to the Norfolk Arms, collecting money along the way. They will be setting off at 10am.

Tom told Look Local: “We decided we wanted to do something for Weston Park because they’re a local cause and cancer is something that affects everyone.” As well as the walk, the Arms will host a fundraiser on April 20 with live band, The Beat and the Bear performing. There will also be a charity raffle and cake sale. Bar staff have also donated their tip money.

Dr Billings said: “Brake works with bereaved individuals and families in the aftermath of a fatal road crash, both nationwide and in South Yorkshire. "While the police do everything they can to investigate the incidents, grieving families can still be left with questions and a big gap in their lives.

“The death of a loved one in a road collision comes out of the blue. Families are not prepared, suffer shock and grief and need on-going support. Brake offers bereavement packs and support to families looking for answers and an understanding of what to do next.” Brake is a UK-wide road safety charity, and a wellestablished provider of support to people bereaved and seriously injured in road crashes. The bereavement packs are provided to bereaved families by the police following every UK road death and have been for more than a decade. They offer a range of specialist literature online and in hard-copy, such as books for bereaved children and a guide for serious injury victims. The literature provides emotional comfort and information on the array of procedures and practical matters that traumatised families must deal with. If anyone would like to access support from Brake in the aftermath or a road traffic collision they have a dedicated helpline on 0808 8000 401 or you can find more information on their website - http://www.brake. org.uk/

THE Army Benevolent Fund (ABF) raised over £2,000 with a bucket collection at Sheffield Wednesday’s clash with Fulham on Saturday April 7. The ABF is a charity that supports soldiers that have been injured both physically and mentally in the line of duty and also to their families. Rob Hulley, Steven Milne and Jonny Peat are trying to raise as much as possible to help the charity and are going to attempt to complete a 66-mile three-day walk across the battlefields of the First World War in October this year. It's called the 'Front Line Walk'.

Rob said: “Thanks to SWFC for allowing us to do the bucket collection we raised a fantastic total of £2045.87 for the charity. “This included not only SWFC fans contributing but also SUFC fans contributing as we started the collection in the pubs where they congregated before their match against Barnsley.” The ABF gives a lifetime of support to soldiers and veterans from the British Army, and their immediate families, when they are in need. They make grants to individuals through their Regiments and Corps and support a wide range

of specialist charities that sustain the British Army ‘family’, both at home and around the world. They take pride in being responsive, making a difference at a critical point in people’s lives. They have been doing this since 1944, working with veterans of every conflict, and envisage continuing doing so for the long haul – supporting all future generations of our soldiers and their dependants. There is a stone trough into which the water emerges and exits on Cockshutts Lane and from which all are free to take the water. I’ve not needed the water’s reputed medicinal powers, but it does emerge from the ground crystal clear, cold and clean tasting.

Forging fairer futures Sir / Madam So Sheffield Labour party have decided to release a document called ‘Forging Fairer Futures’ the day before the star report the salaries of the council’s top executives. Am I the only one who sees the irony in this? If my company had seen our income reduced to the levels Sheffield City Council claim to have experienced, there’s no way we’d be putting up our prices/council tax or keeping our top earners on. Now the council by their own admission provide less than they have done previously, surely John Mothersole should be working a couple of days a week as chief executive and a couple of days emptying bins or running a library.

These people with the backing of Sheffield Labour Councillor Zoe Sykes, continue to be rewarded for providing a substandard Labour Candidate for West Ecclesfield service while Labour councillors promise a ‘fairer future’. How is it fair for residents to have their taxes put up while inept council officers receive the levels of pay they do?

Kind regards, Tony Moody PS - if Mr Parker has a copy of the excerpt in the 1900 Penistone Express, I’d love to see it!

Time machines and post boxes

This May let’s vote against this hypocrisy and get some councillors in who will deal with the excessive pay.

The fight for a Post Office for Burncross goes on

I was interested to read Michael Parker’s letter about the Oughtibridge spring waters on Cockshutts Lane (“Medicinal trough, April 12 2018). Having done some digging it would seem that planning for the Thorncliffe baths was passed by Sheffield City Council Planning Committee on January 8 2015 with the contract approved in 2014 for Keir to do the work. Zoe Sykes was not elected as a West Ecclesfield Councillor until May 7 2015. Have the Labour Party invented time-machines?

Labour and the Liberal Democrats have had six chances to make the Post Office a condition of a planning application being granted and they failed on every occasion. They’re now trying to pacify the people of Burncross with cheap photo opportunities and hollow gestures. It’s no good closing the stable when the horse has bolted.

Local Produce, Food & Drink THE IMPORTANCE OF LOCAL PRODUCE LOOK LOCAL, LIVE LOCAL AND SHOP LOCAL Food that has been produced locally is guaranteed to be fresher than produce sold in a supermarket.

This is due to them being over handled and thrown around on their journey to the supermarket.

It could be days or even weeks before supermarket goods arrive in the store whereas local produce has often been picked in the last 24 hours of when you purchased it. It’s not only the taste which improves from freshness but the nutritional value too.

Fruit and vegetables from supermarkets are therefore going to be fully ripened by the time you purchase them, or they may even be bruised. Local produce on the other hand has been handled a lot less and hasn’t had to stand up to rigorous transportation.

Buying local goods also makes us keep up to date with the seasons meaning that we are eating foods when they taste the best and are least expensive.

Local produce also helps improve the environment as according too the New Economics Foundation, damage from aggressive agricultural methods used

“THE LITTLE BISTRO WITH A BIG HEART” Set amidst the green fields of the Hazlehead Estate, Millhouse Green Our quaint bistro is full of flavour serving beautiful home-cooked food. All of which is gluten free.

by supermarkets costs the economy at least £7.2bn each year. Whether it’s the farmer who has milked the cow or the baker who has baked the bread there is a story behind each item you purchase and you know the journey of everything you eat. Also food which has had less distance to travel is less likely to be harmfully contaminated. A farmer has more freedom to try a variety of small crops of fruit and vegetables that are unlikely to be sold in a large supermarket. Supermarkets are only interested in selling fruit and vegetables that are well-known such as iceberg lettuce and granny smith apples whereas local producers sell unusual crops for people to try.

Similarly, a local brewer is more likely to produce a wider range of beers compared to the range sold in supermarkets. Local brewers also brew specialty beers throughout the year which means there is a chance to try something new. An added advantage of local brewers is that their beer is cheap, priced at roughly £2 a pint.

Local Produce, Food & Drink Bradfield Brewery to offer warm welcome at their Deepcar pub POPULAR Sheffield based Bradfield Brewery have taken ownership of the King and Miller Public House situated in Deepcar, Sheffield.

Formerly owned by Admiral Taverns, an opportunity knocked at the door for Bradfield Brewery when they saw the establishment had been placed on the market for sale. With contracts now exchanged, the brewery are keen to get the doors open and give a warm welcome to customers old and new. Shortly to become a Bradfield Brewery Tap, the King and Miller will feature at least six cask ales from the Farmers Ales range produced by the brewery, as well as a great selection of fine wines, spirits and soft drinks. With open fires, a pool table and a spacious, enclosed beer garden – the pub

will endeavour to offer a warm and friendly atmosphere where everyone will be welcome. Operating a public house venue is not something new for Bradfield Brewery who have enjoyed a decade of success at their Brewery Tap, The Nags Head at Loxley. Bradfield Brewery is based on a busy working farm in the picturesque village of Bradfield in Sheffield. Since brewing their first cask ale in 2005, the brewery has enjoyed continued success with their Farmers Ale range, delivering their cask ales to outlets nationwide. John Gill, Director at Bradfield Brewery, on the acquisition said: “We are excited at the opportunity to serve another local community with a traditional style pub-

lic house which will offer great products in a friendly atmosphere. “A traditional pub is something we believe should remain a part of our society and we are pleased to be bringing this offering to the local community of Deepcar and Stocksbridge.” The King and Miller will be re-opening soon with a date yet to be confirmed. Following this exciting news, the Brewery are now looking to recruit a manager or management couple to take care of the day to day running of this new venture. Ideal candidates will have had previous management experience as well as a high level of customer service and leadership skills. Any enquiries including CVs should be made to Bradfield Brewery by email to lisa@bradfieldbrewery.com or call 0114 2851118.

FOUR GOALS IN TWO DAYS FOR CODURI IT was a great weekend for Penistone Church’s Jordan Coduri – he scored the winning goal for Church against Pontefract Collieries on Saturday and then hit a hat-trick for Yorkshire against Barawa – their first away game. OUGHTIBRIDGE War memorial got back to wining ways in the Blades Super Draw with a hard fought 5-1 win over Southey, but despite top scorer Callum Chambers capitalising on a keeper error after only five minutes, the first half was a very even contest and it was no surprise when the away side equalised on the stroke of half time. In the second half, Oughtibridge came flying out of the blocks and Callum Chambers again wasted no time adding two more to complete his hat-trick before Chas Tunnards hard work paid off when he scored. Then,

Chambers added his fourth five minutes from time to complete the scoring. Sunday’s home game however was in stark contrast as a depleted Oughtibridge put on a dreadful display against lowly Cotts. They were 2-0 down at half time and when the away side made it three just after the restart, the game was effectively over. A Callum Chmabers penalty and a lovely finish from Matt Harrison brought the home side back in to the game but the away side managed to hold on to win 3-2. HIGH Green Villa FC ground out a 1-1 draw against Dodworth MWFC. This was an interesting fixture with runaway leaders Dodworth needing just one point to secure the league title and Villa keen for a win to help their own promotion chances.

Villa had an early chance with leading scorer Jacobs through on goal with Wiles the Dodworth keeper making a point blank save. This was a good hard fought contest with both teams creating half chances. Villa took the lead in the 35th minute when Wilson scored direct from a 20-yard free kick, curled into the top corner of the net. Villa pressed for a second and it was only late in the game when Dodworth started to look dangerous and equalised after 75 minutes, 1-1 being a fair result. Villa’s next game is in the Association Cup Final on April 25 against Penistone Church to be played at Parkgate FC, kick off 7.30pm.

SWIMMING TO SUCCESS STOCKSBRIDGE Pentaqua swimmers again enjoyed success in the recent Yorkshire County events held over three weekends in February.

Twenty-nine swimmers gained qualifying times to perform in a total of 112 races in the annual county championships, showing an increasing trend in the number of eligible swimmers produced by the club. All swimmers showed determination and dedication in their efforts in these galas. The committed youngsters performed well with 28 top 10 prizes being awarded to nine swimmers. Top three individual awards were achieved by Ben Croft and Makyle Iqbal - the boys showing dominance in the 13-year-old category. The boys aged 11 and 12 and over 16 boys and girls competed well and produced final places in the team events. Stocksbridge Pentaqua head coach, David Wright, is extremely pleased with the swimmers achievements and values the efforts these children put into the sport. He said: “Lots of the swimmers achieved the quicker North Eastern Regional qualifying times and will be representing the club in May. “This is achievement is impressive given the size and limited resources of the club; the reputation of Stocksbridge Pentaqua continues to grow.” Swimmers are hoping to repeat their successes at the club’s Open Meet which will be held on Aprils 21 at Ponds Forge. David added: “Good Luck to all swimmers competing. Thank you for all parties who have offered help and support in this event – please contact ktcroft@ btinternet.net should you wish to offer sponsorship or raffle prizes. “Anyone wishing to know more about Stocksbridge Pentaqua Swimming club can contact the club at pentaqua.clubroom@gmail.com.”

gers. The fourth try came straight from Bridge regathering their own kick and number 10 Alex Pegg thundering over the line.

All did not look well for a while with the low laying thick fog but this did not dishearten the spirits and the warm up ensued.

The second was a break up the left wing by loose head prop Adam Mahmood who was brought down just short of the 22 and in support for the offload was second row Louis Colley, running an inch perfect support line who bust the rough the would be defence and then showing a clean pair of heals as he dove under the sticks. The last was a great effort from Harry Ryan, powering towards the line with four players hanging off him. Score at half time 15–0.

Now the Pigs were taught a valuable lesson, thinking the game was done, until immediately the Tigers came back with two consecutive scores, showing great determination, pace and power.

By the time kick off came, the Pigs welcomed the Tigers with a mild spring day and the pitch in fair condition considering the week of rain and the first team game the previous day. The Pigs lost the toss so kicked to the opposition, but the excellent chase and pressure from all 13 soon regathered the ball. This set the platform for the whole game. Ferocious tackling and excellent work at the break down saw the first of three tries

With the rust blown away and playing down the slope, the Pigs looked to take the game well and truly away from the brave and hardworking Ti-

This shocked the Pigs back into game mode with four tries to two. Ollie Porter, who carried strongly all morning, with what seemed like the whole team trying to bring him down, continued the hard graft and Ryan getting the ball in the offload to score his second. This followed by a well worked ball through the hands to put George Pollard in for his score, try

number six. The Tigers kept their resilience up but the continued pressure took its toll with George Robins bulldozing over after an immense run and Collison from scrum half Rowan Pegg, which the spectators could feel from the side line. The game was brought to a close with a final try from Harry Browrigg following suit from his one earlier in the game. Coach Joe Jones said: “It was great to get the boys back out on the paddock and playing. It was a long layoff but they proved once again they can be a force to be reckoned with.” The Junior Pigs have three games left this season and the next game will be against Barnsley RUFC under the floodlights this Friday at 7.15pm.

This is an amazing achievement for all three of them, especially Sophie who has only just turned five. She started gymnastics less than six months ago and has shown clear talent for the sport,

Head coach Kirstie said: “The club couldn’t be more proud of them for overcoming their nerves and stepping onto the competition floor.

“They performed amazing routines and scored some of the highest scores of the day. Especially on vault. Sophie scored a massive 9.4 out of 10 and both Aaron and Megan scored 9.3 out of 10. Such amazing work from

Hawks take the knocks but come up smiling Drighlington ARLFC 46 Sheffield Hawks 16 UP on the wild outskirts of East Bradford Hawks were handed a lesson in confrontation and poor refereeing by a well drilled, pacey and strong Drighlington team. The pitch going could be described as firm to swamp as well as being a short, squat, wide nightmare to play on. Few forwards, lots of playing out of position… It’s to the team’s credit that they held their heads up even though the luck in the game seemed to be considerably with the Bradford side throughout. Four Drighlington tries were scored in the first half, notable for their soft nature - most were the result of Hawks fumbles and misses - and the variable accuracy of the referee’s interpretation of what constituted offside, especially when kicks and defensive lines were concerned. That said, the first half is probably best passed over. Nothing Hawks tried worked, every decision seemed to go the opposition’s way and Hawks, under significant strain, were a collection of individuals rather than a team. Josh Bilton again had a good performance, trying to lift the team and, with However, defensively the Hawks team gave a good Littlewood, improve the shape of offensive and de- account of themselves. Straight from the kick off Hawks headed downfield and Joe Littlewood scored in the corner after a brilliantly timed pass from Tom Kerr. 40 metres out seemed a long way but his pace and strength took him over. The third try was scored by Littlewood again with a well-executed close in planned move.

The match improved for Hawks and outstanding tackles from Robert Harden, Will Burns and Max Blackburn undoubtedly saved points. Indeed, Blackburn had two strong runs, catching the high ball reliably and returning it with interest to a tiring Drighlington team. Not a classic, but a match that showed lots of heart. At full strength Hawks would have run this team very close.

Stocksbridge show steel in defeat

Local Sport Alvechurch FC 1 – 0 SPS STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels were undone by a single goal as they lost out to high-flying Alvechurch on Saturday. Warm sunshine greeted the Steels players as they looked to get back to winning ways at the Lye Meadows Stadium. On a heavily sanded sloping pitch that had not recovered from the recent rainfall, it was always going to be a game for fight, commitment and organisation. With only two minutes gone, Steels nearly went ahead when the home goalkeeper Charlie Price fumbled a Brodie Litchfield right foot drive that pealing for offside when a long through ball was spilled onto the post. sent down the inside right channel and wasn’t Alvechurch began to show why they sit in second dealt with. spot in the league with inventive attacking play where balls sent up top stuck at feet to allow sup- It was Nathan Waite, Alvechurch’s lively number nine, who latched onto it one v one and chipped port. the ball over the advancing Reay, the ball hit the Accurate diagonal balls spread the Steels back four base of the post, rebounded back onto the onrushand second balls were being picked up. phases were clearly evident but the Steels back four ably led by Matt Reay were outstanding, protecting Dave Reay admirably. Indeed, Steels were now looking a threat up top, certainly on the counter attack and it was Ruthven who tested Price when Lumsden flicked on a header in the box for Ruthven to spin and volley from close range where Price tipped over. It was no surprise when the referee failed to see the blatant pull on the shirt of Lumsden in the box as he went through on goal. It was not going to be Steels’ day, the officials made decisions on whoever shouted loudest and with a vociferous home support Steels were always up against it. A free kick from 20 yards was well hit by Alvechurch captain Ashley Carter’s left foot, but

didn’t trouble Reay the Steels goalkeeper who let it be as it went wide of his left hand post. Alvechurch pressed high, they were a strong, fit and organised, were all physical units that were difficult to break down on a tight pitch. The outstanding Matt Reay was unlucky to be booked for a great challenge deep in the Steels half where the resulting free kick led to nothing. Reay was central to the action and led by example winning numerous headers and driving the SPS boys to the end. All in all plenty of positives from a battling, hard to beat performance from the Steels and if these attributes are taken into the last few games Steels will surely finish the season on a high.

Sport students learn to make a difference SPORT students at Barnsley College have increased their knowledge on how team sports can make a difference to the lives of children in the poorest regions of Uganda, Kenya, India and Pakistan.

Amanda Sowerby, Sports tutor at Barnsley College, added: “Activities such as guest speakers are an important part of getting the word out about how sport can improve the lives of children. Pigs have too much grunt for Pythons LOOKING to impress the watching sponsors and expectant supporters, Stocksbridge Rugby ignored the form book at the weekend to record only their first victory of 2018, out muscling the much fancied Harrogate Pythons on their way to a richly deserved 28-12 victory. A sunny and warm Bolsterstone greeted the two teams, as Stocksbridge welcomed back evergreen centre Ben Senior, the slippery Ryan Smith to the wing berth, with veteran stand off Ricky Christopherson selected in the number 10 position in place of the unavailable Ben Westby. Quick thinking by livewire scrum half Adam Frith allowed the home forwards to gain territory with clock tower Beal, the burly number eight Ben Brown and skipper Pete Newton restored to the back row making their presence felt, eventually drawing a penalty from the visitors, which Bowskill slotted to nudge the Pigs ahead. The recent hard work from the players in training was clear for all to see as wave after wave of Stocksbridge attack trapped the Harrogate Pythons in their own red zone for long periods. A great hit from Brown was followed by a harsh yellow card for a technical offence and despite some desperate defence, Harrogate made the extra man tell and a well rehearsed backs play lead to a try close enough to the posts to make it a sevenpointer, the lead changed hands.

Stocksbridge good field position, and Roebuck leapt highest of all to secure a line out, the forwards formed almost the perfect maul and the good times were back when Ricky James was rewarded for his endeavours with another Stocksbridge score from the bottom of the pile. There was more to come in the shape of a bonus point try through Ricky Rowett, almost colliding with the post before grounding the ball, and Bowskill tagged the extras to leave the Pigs with a commanding and match winning 21 point lead with just over 10 minutes left. The visitors managed a consolation score as the game ended with a final score of 29-12 to Stocksbridge and five much need league points to the desperate Piggies.

Sam Whitaker put in a huge shift and was named the Bradfield Brewery man of the match, but he was quick to acknowledge a massive team effort from all of the squad. An emotional but happy Keenan said afterwards: “We asked for passion, commitment, effort and enthusiasm. The boys delivered this in spades and fully deserved their victory. All credit to the players. Andy and I have been tough on them recently and they have responded in the right way. I’m a very proud Piggy tonight. Stocksbridge Rugby travel to Otliensians this week, still with a slim hope of avoiding relegation. There is a supporter’s bus with seats still available, so book in at the club and show your support. The squad really appreciate the way the community and sponsors have stuck with them throughout a difficult season.
