Royal acclaim for Scout group PRINCE Andrew, Duke of York, visited Sheffield to present awards for outstanding community work.

As part of the royal visit, he took time to present 150th Wadsley Scouts with a prestigious Duke of York Community Award for their work with young people.

During the ceremony at Sheffield Cathedral, Prince Andrew met and chatted to youngsters from the group. The Prince commended the group for their work and backed volunteers to keep up the good work.

The award recognises the scout group’s efforts to bring fun and adventure to as many youngsters as possible, including those with extra needs.

With over 260 youngsters, aged between six and eighteen, 150th is one of the largest scout groups in the UK. Collecting the award, Matt Moran, a member of the group, said: “This award really recognises the hard work of the volunteers who week-on-week help to organise awesome activities and help to teach new skills.

“Putting children centre stage”

A MEETING to discuss the future of the St Matthias Church building is to take place, with suggestions being taken and discussed.

With the recent closure of St Mathias Church, various local organisations would be interested in

the building being put to continued community usage.

Beacon Arts Project see it as a potential space that assists them with their work to inspire creativity locally.

The Stocksbridge History Society

wish to have a place to display important local historic artefacts, and with its close proximity to the railway line through the works in the centre of Stocksbridge, Don Valley Railway see the building being a good base for campaigning

ahead of it being a Grand Central Station for Stocksbridge in the future when our aspirations materialise.

If any other local organisations consider that they may wish to join a campaign to keep St Mathias as a community

building, they can attend the meeting at 6.30pm on Wednesday August 15 at Stocksbridge Town Hall.

It may still be the middle of the summer holidays but Noodle Performance Arts North Sheffield is now taking bookings for the start of the academic year.

Performing arts and dance classes help boost children’s confidence and self-esteem as well as equipping them with valuable life skills.

STOCKSBRIDGE Pentaqua swimmers travelled to The John Charles Centre in Leeds to compete in Borough of Barnsley Swimming Club Summer Sizzle gala on July 8. The 23 swimmers competed in over 100 swims - this led to the club being awarded Top Club trophy, further showing the impressive performances made by the swimmers.

Head coach David Wright said: “The Top Club award proves what hard work, dedication and effort our swimmers show during galas and ongoing training sessions - well done swimmers!”

SOUTH YORKSHIRE TRAVELMASTER OPERATORS INTRODUCE DISCOUNT FOR 18-21 YEAR OLDS ON September 1 TravelMaster, the commercial organisation responsible for delivering and managing multi-operator and integrated ticketing in South Yorkshire, will be introducing some changes to its South Yorkshire bus, train and tram tickets; including a new and enhanced approach to providing discounts for 18-21 year olds in the region with a new and bespoke ‘18-21 Discount Card’.

The ‘18-21 Discount Card’ will be a smart card available for all young people regardless of where they live or their level of study who travel in South Yorkshire up to the day before their 22nd birthday.

With it an eligible young person will enjoy a discount of 15% against the price of all adult 7 & 28 Day TravelMaster tickets.

This new approach will replace TravelMaster’s current branded youth

products, the SYConnect18, 20 & 25 and the SYConnect+18, 20 & 25, which will be withdrawn from sale from the 1st October 2018.

This change will not affect the discounted GetAbout range of tickets for under-18s.

MP supports child Rural crime costs South library campaign Yorkshire over ÂŁ600,000 in 2017

RURAL crime cost South Yorkshire ÂŁ643,910 in 2017.

Despite a fall of 18.2% from ÂŁ786,865 in 2016, the problems in South Yorkshire persist.

The figures form part of NFU Mutual’s annual Rural Crime Report, published today, which reveals that the UK saw a 13.4% rise in the cost of rural crime last year.

The items most commonly targeted by thieves across South Yorkshire over the last 12 months were quad bikes and ATVs (all-terrain vehicles), equine equipment and machinery.

Richard Houldsworth, NFU Mutual Senior Agent in South Yorkshire, said: “Countryside criminals continue to become more brazen and farmers are now having to continually in-

crease security and adopt new ways of protecting their equipment.

“Social media is fast becoming the new eyes and ears of the countryside. By keeping in close touch with neighbours and police through local farmwatch schemes country people can play a significant role in identifying suspicious activity and bringing thieves to justice. “Fitting gates to prevent easy access to farm yards and drives is one of the most effective measures. High-tech security such as movement detectors, infra-red cameras and ‘geofencing’, which triggers an alarm if a farm vehicle moves off the premises, can also play a part.�

Research shows that reading for pleasure is a pivotal factor in life achievement and that children who use libraries are twice as likely to be above average readers. Remains of 200 year-old Ironworks found under Yorkshire playing field A RECENT archaeological dig, funded through the National Lottery at the Milton Forge playing fields between Elsecar and Hoyland in South Yorkshire has discovered a previously unknown part of the once famous Milton Ironworks.

Over the last few weeks, professional archaeologists have worked with staff from Barnsley Museums and the local community to find traces of the area’s forgotten industrial past, as part of the Great Place Wentworth and Elsecar project, with exciting results.

In the last few days of the dig, they uncovered the remains of a calcining kiln – an oven for roasting iron ore before it was smelted in blast furnaces. It’s thought that this was one of a series of kilns used at the works, although their location was unknown.

Richard Jackson, principal archaeologist with ArcHeritage, said: “The dig has been really exciting. The geophysics that Historic England did last year showed a big magnetic response here, so we were interested to find out why that was. We have been able to prove that the remains of the former ironworks have survived, and the site was bigger than we first thought.”

The dig uncovered many other fascinating artefacts from the early 20th century when the field was used as a tip. This included part of a commemorative cup from the Belmont Social Club in Hoyland, and a workman’s clay pipe from Broseley in Shropshire.

Another chance find was a rare stamped brick from a forgotten brickworks close to the Milton Ironworks. The brick is now on display as part of the ‘Barnsley Brick

Project’ exhibition at Experience Barnsley Museum and Discovery centre.

During the dig, dozens of local people and school children came to help. Many more visited the site to see what was going on and to share their memories and stories of the area.

Dr. Tegwen Roberts, Project Officer for the Elsecar Heritage Action Zone, supported by Historic England said: “It’s been a fantastic community effort. The Milton Ironworks was originally a key part of the planned model industrial development of Elsecar. Generations of local people worked here, and it’s been great to see that people are rediscovering their connection with the site and its history.”

Councillor Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: “The excavation has provided a fantastic opportunity for the community to take part in documenting an important piece of local history. We are passionate about Barnsley’s heritage and the work carried out at Milton Ironworks is part of an exciting programme of activities and events.

Mates Club Dear Sir, Having just read David Ogleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s response to my recent letter, I must say I am once more amazed at his total negativity about Ecclesfield Parish Council and he makes some interesting allegations about funding.

I lived in Chapeltown and was elected as a councillor for Chapeltown ward, I certainly was not biased towards Grenoside or Ecclesfield to the detriment of High Green or Thorncliffe. From my perspective I worked to support groups irrespective of their location.

David mentions the â&#x20AC;&#x153;EPC mates clubâ&#x20AC;?. When I was a councillor this was certainly untrue and while everyone wanted to support all areas within the parish council area there were certainly robust debates that took place (and rightly so) as, while we had our different political views, it was not personal and ultimately we all wanted to improve all our neighbourhoods.

In conjunction with the show, a fun day has been organised at Chapeltown Library - a children’s ‘veggie activity day’.

If you can grow it, make it, preserve it or bake it then save the date! Categories will include fresh produce, floral, domestic produce, handicrafts and textiles, art and sculpture, photography, woodwork, children and teens to include painting, poetry, craft and much more.

This will be open to exhibitors to place their entries from 8.30am to 10.30am and the show will be open to the public from 1pm to 4.30pm.

Organisers are hoping to break the record for the number of entries

This will include a vegetable quiz and lots of veggie related crafts.

Winners of the various categories will be announced at the show in September. Again, organisers look forward to seeing as many children as possible taking part.

The cost is 50p per adult entry with all child and teen entries free.

IT was a great double win for the two Stocksbridge CC sides at the weekend.

Stocksbridge CC first team took on Hallam CC third team at Bracken Moor in another important fixture to move up the table and ease any relegation fears.

Hallam won the toss and elected to bat and opening bowlers Jake Vickers (2) and Joe Hibbert took some early wickets to leave the away team 10-2 before a slight recovery got them to 50-3.

Another collapse by Hallam left them at 80-6 and then 92-7 wickets from Jack Newton (2) and Les Harris who

ended up with figures of 4-52 before the away rallied to set a total of 156 all out for Stocksbridge to chase.

Stocksbridge began their chase with intent and openers Matt Price and Jack Newton got them off to a flyer putting 50 on for the first wicket before Jack Newton was out for a rapid 29. Dave Smith built another partnership with Matt Price who finished on a match winning 59 not out as the home team knocked off the total in just 26 overs to move up the table in YDCL Division One. Stocksbridge CC second team travelled to Ridgeway

This result takes them out of the relegation zone and was a great team performance with contributions from all of the team which will be needed to secure there place in this division.

Church lose to Handsworth in opener PENISTONE Church got off to a losing start to their new campaign, slipping to a 3-1 defeat away to Handsworth Parramore.

“The disappointing thing is we did the hard work first half by staying in the game, we went in with a clean sheet, which is what we wanted.

The game was without score for the first hour but a quickfire brace from Ged Phillips gave Handsworth the lead.

“We went out with a clean sheet mentality for the second half because if you do that you at least take a point.

Cameron Rigby sealed the three points for the home side in the 90th minute but there was still time for Brett Lovell to grab a late consolation for Church.

“Unfortunately in the second half we just let them dictate a little bit too much, we didn’t do our individual jobs or our collective jobs as well as we could.

Manager Ian Richards reflected after the game: “Obviously this wasn’t the result we wanted on the first day of the season but we must remember we have 37 opportunities to put it right, it’s a long season.

“We were too nice and it’s something we have to improve because against the best teams like Handsworth you can’t be. There was no question about our endeavour or our work ethic, our attitude or even our quality but we’ve got to have a mean, winning or leadership streak within us and that’s what the best teams have.

“I didn’t really want to talk about it before the game but we probably had our toughest away fixture away at Handsworth who are title favourites for the league.

“Handsworth have got that, they’ve got experienced players, they have players who have played a lot higher and probably still be playing a lot

higher. If we want to ambitious we have to have that within us.

“Too many times crosses went out of play, we made wrong decisions about our through balls and passing and when we did get it in the box we didn’t commit ourselves and attack it with conviction, we allowed them to have free headers and their keeper to come and get clean takes.

“We’re disappointed to lose, we’ll put it right, I’ve raised the standard, players will raise their standard, and we’ll put it right.

“We have a really exciting home game in the Emirates FA Cup against Bootle next Saturday to put it right.

“Today we lost to a better team, in particular the second half, we dust ourselves down, we accept defeat, we work hard in training this week, we arrange to be tactically right next Saturday and we go and put it right against Bootle.”

Stocksbridge PS 4-1 SWFC THE Stocksbridge Park Steels first team finished their pre season programme with a satisfying 4-1 win over a youthful Sheffield Wednesday side.

Chris Hilton would have been disappointed to see his side concede from a corner early in the first half and they didn’t really get to grips with the midfield movement of their professional counterparts in the first half, however whatever he said at half time had an impact.

Stocksbridge came out in the second half and pressed their opponents much better and soon levelled things up with a Luke Mangham goal.

Brad Beatson put the result beyond doubt with a good header from a corner.

Sixteen-year-old Lewis Whitham was introduced from the bench to join other under-18 products Jordan Greaves and Ben Rhodes. And Whitham added the icing to the cake with a well taken finish inside the box to continue his impressive pre season.

Chris will use the next couple of weeks to fine tune his squad ready for the first game of the season on Saturday August 18 against Stamford FC at the Look Local Stadium with a 3pm kick off.

CHAIRMAN ISSUES RALLYING CALL NEW Stocksbridge Park Steels chairman Graham Furness has issued a rallying cry to the local area for the coming season.

Graham has stepped up to take the role after previous chairman Allen Bethel’s reign came to an end in the summer.

He has high hopes for the club and has been busy behind the scenes, helping the club to prepare for the new season.

“I’ve got big shoes to fill,” Graham says, speaking in the club dressing room. “Allen put the club where it is today and I’ve got a good foundation to start from.

“We have to raise more income for the first team so that we can compete with the other teams in this division.

The manager, Chris Hilton, has done a good job in his four years with the club, getting the team in a round the play-offs spots whilst also playing attractive football.

“We are grateful not only to our main sponsors – Dransfield Properties, Gen Fab and Look Local – but all of the people and companies that contribute. We also have a very good partnership with Sheffield United.

“But as a club we have been guilty of not promoting the good work that we do – we provide football for 350 juniors and take Christmas hampers out to the elderly. But I want us

to become even more active in the community.”

A number of tasks await the High Green man but the biggest challenge the club faces, he admits, is boosting flagging attendances at Look Local Stadium.

“It’s a big challenge to increase the attendances. We have excellent facilities here at Bracken Moor with the best stadium and pitch in non-league South Yorkshire football.

“For £7 or £5 for concessions, you can enjoy a good standard of football with covered seating, a bar and club.

With professional football getting more and more expensive to attend, non-league provides an excellent alternative.

“It would be good if not just the community of Stocksbridge but also surrounding areas such as High Green and Chapeltown could support us too. It’s only 10 or 15 minutes in the car. Also, the Tramlink bus stops right outside the ground.

“Come and give it a try – we look forward to welcoming you to the stadium where you also get fantastic views of the local area!”

Steels play Stamford at home on Saturday August 18, then Bamber Bridge in the FA Cup on August 25 and Sheffield FC on August 27. All are 3pm kick offs.
