£5,000 reward offered in 21-year murder case

THE son of a woman killed 21 years ago is offering a £5,000 reward for information leading to the case being solved.

This week marks the 21st anniversary of Patricia Grainger’s death and her son, Daniel, has never given up in the search for her killer.

Patricia was 25 when she was sexually assaulted and murdered on August 10 1997. Her body was found underneath a discarded bed base near a brook close to her home on Buchanan Road in Parson Cross. She had learning difficulties and was described as having the mental age of 10.

Daniel set up a website to appeal for information in 2008 and he

still runs it now, along with a facebook page.

However, his appeals have fallen on deaf ears. Nobody was ever charged or prosecuted over the death.

However, he is hoping that the offer of a cash reward may convince someone to come forward.

He has recently inherited some money and wants to use it to help catch the killer. Daniel said: “The money I inherited is something I have never had so I want to offer it to the person out there who knows who killed my mum and can help us get justice. I hope it will make a difference.

“There could be someone out there worried about the repercussions of coming forward and

this might just be what it takes to persuade them. It might be enough for them to move away from the area for example.

“Everything apart from a national appeal on Crimewatch has been done over the years. I feel that the reward is all that is left and this is why it it is important to me,” he added.

“There is someone out there who has done things that people with normal thoughts would not.

“Whoever did this has killed once and could easily kill again.

They need to be caught and made to pay the price for murdering my mum.”

SMASH AND GRAB RAID AT BIKE SHOP

THIEVES broke into Trek Bicycles at Fox Valley on Monday August 13 at around 4am.

Extensive damage was caused and five bikes were also stolen. Access was gained by breaking through the glass of the main doors.

The store closed for the morning whilst the Police carried out their investigation but re-opened later on in the day and are trading again as normal.

The bikes stolen were a Trek Powerfly FS 7 18.5 2019, a Trek Slash 9.7 17.5 2018, A Trek Roscoe 8 18.5 2019, a Trek Fuel Ex 7 18.5 2018 and a Trek Fuel Ex 8 18.5 2018.

MACHETE OFF THE STREETS IT was a productive day for PCSOs Edwards and Eyre on Thursday as they recovered a disturbingly large machete from the Fox Hill area.

It was found thanks to information from partners at Sheffield City Council who used their close links with The Parson Cross / Southey Team to ensure it was recovered as quickly and safely as possible.

A PILE of tyres was set on fire behind the Cadbury’s factory in Hillsborough on the morning of Friday August 10.

The dumped tyres had been set alight and the fire was discovered at around 6am, with black smoke pouring from the site.

Anger expressed over delayed planning decision A LOCAL action group set up in opposition to a housing project have spoken of their frustration at a planning decision still not being made – nine months after submission of the planning application.

After months of delay, the developer submitted a full planning application just before Christmas last year. Fast forward nine months and the scheme has still not been decided, leaving local residents fuming at the lack of action.

Upper Don Action Group (UDAG) say that there is still no prospect of an end to the uncertainty about Royd Farm village.

The target date for deciding this planning application was originally set for March 16 2018. Shortly after, this slipped to April 13 2018.

Former planning chairman John Hesketh says the delay is “scandalous”.

John Hesketh, chairman of UDAG, the local community group campaigning against the plans, said: “It is astonishing that this planning application has yet to be decided after all this time – and at UDAG we understand that there is not even a date pencilled in for this matter to go before the planning committee I used to chair.

The 93+ dwelling scheme is earmarked for fields next to Royd Farm between Bolsterstone and Deepcar. The green field site is next to the Green Belt and close to the Peak District National Park.

Plans for a new development on green field land first surfaced back in January 2017 via Hallam Land Management, an arm of Sheffield construction company, Henry Boot.

Following a public meeting called by community group Upper Don Action Group (UDAG) in March 2017, objections flooded into Sheffield City Council’s planning dept. And this was just to establish whether or not an Environmental Impact Assessment was needed.

“Planning applications are meant to be decided in about 13 weeks.

Although there is some support from some parts of the local community, hundreds of objections have been received by Sheffield City Council.

John added: “This farmland is simply the wrong spot for such a large housing development. It is adjacent to the Green Belt and close to the Peak District National Park. A development of this size would generate even more vehicle movements. It would make the Carr Road to Manchester Road bottleneck even worse. Neighbours are of a similar view.”

A PIECE of railway history is up for grabs with Chapeltown Central Station up for auction.

The Victorian station includes a platform, waiting rooms and a ticket hall and has a guide price of £250,000.

Part of the building has already been converted into a home with

three bedrooms and has around an acre of land included.

It opened in 1854 but a larger one was built in 1877. Forming part of the South Yorkshire Railway Blackburn Valley line, it was closed to passenger trains in 1954 and goods lines in 1987.

But there’s another extra that might put some potential buyers

off – Adrian Little from Mark Jenkison and Son auctioneers said: “Allegedly, there is a ghost of somebody or ghosts of persons who were killed during the air raid whilst they were loading Churchill tanks on to the railway track. But the current owners never reported any paranormal activity.”

It’s playtime as investment in city’s parks pays off Works completed this year include installation of a range of new playground facilities, from toddler play units, to parkour inspired agility equipment.

Other work has included the much needed improvement of outdated and uninspiring ball game facilities, where new MUGAs have been created to encourage physical activity and sports opportunities for communities.

The Council’s Parks and Countryside service will continue working with Public Health colleagues and partners to make sure communities across the city benefit from this funding.

THOUSANDS of park visitors across Sheffield are enjoying the benefits of Public Health funding, with ten of the city’s parks and playgrounds being significantly improved so far this year.

In March 2017 Sheffield City Council announced plans to invest £1.5m in to its parks over a three year period, to upgrade outdoor facilities in the parts of Sheffield where health needs are the greatest.

Following development plans, work started at the beginning of this year to upgrade playgrounds and multi-use games areas (MUGAs) in various locations including Hillsborough.

Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Shef-

field City Council, said: “We in Sheffield are proud of our green and open spaces.

Our huge city parks attract hundreds of visitors, but we also know how valuable our smaller community parks are to the people who live nearby.

“It has been proven that outdoor spaces play an important role in improving mental and physical wellbeing, whether through walking, running, cycling or just playing, which is why we’re committed to providing high quality spaces and facilities in the areas they are most needed.

“In this first year of investment alone, we have completed major refurbishment work to Norfolk Heritage Park playgrounds and upgraded nine other local parks. I’m thrilled we’ve been able to

complete all of this improvement work in time for the summer holidays, allowing local people to get out and enjoy our parks to the full.”

Further funds have been spent on improving playgrounds at Hillsborough Park and Middlewood Park.

Sites were prioritised for improvement by looking at the areas with the highest levels of deprivation, including health inequalities combined with mapping the quality and standards of outdoor spaces. This method allowed the Parks and Countryside service to identify and improve parks and green spaces in areas where health needs were the greatest and facilities most in need of improvement.

Further Public Health funded projects will be progressed across the city over the next two years with the aim of improving the quality of the city’s parks and green spaces, encouraging their use, and providing opportunities for all to receive the health and wellbeing benefits that parks provide.

Public Access Defibrillator fitted outside Ecclesfield ibrary ECCLESFIELD Library now has a life-saving Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) installed and activated outside.

A defibrillator is a device that gives a high energy electric shock to the heart through the chest wall to someone who is in cardiac arrest.

This high energy shock is called defibrillation, and it’s an essential life saving step in the chain of survival.

There are many defibrillators available in public places such as train stations, shopping centres, airport and leisure centres. These defibrillators are often known as public access defibrillators (PAD) as anyone can use them in an emergency. You shouldn’t be afraid of using a defibrillator if someone has had a cardiac arrest.

LOCAL CHOIRS SUPPORT CHARITIES The concert took place at the Venue on June 30 to a packed audience that included residents from the care centre.

Following the concert, choir chair persons Linda Rose and Keith Raynor were delighted to present a cheque for £550 to the centre to help fund some new musical instruments for the residents.

FIVE local choirs and a band have donated funds to charity after performing at two separate events recently.

Worrall Male Voice Choir was recently joined by Bolsterstone and New Mill Male Voice Choirs together with Loxley Silver Band in Sheffield Cathedral to com-

memorate the life of their chairman, Mark Rotchell.

The concert, in aid of the Critical Care Unit at the Northern General Hospital, raised £1,200 and a retiring bucket collection raised another £398.64.

Your Letters St Matthias - opening Dear Ed Having read with interest the article regarding the closing down of St Matthias Church in Stocksbridge (Look Local 1021 p2) I consequently thought that the following article may be of contrasting interest to you and your readers. Namely, an article entitled: “New church at Stocksbridge. Consecration by the Bishop of Beverley” which appears in the Tuesday, November 4, 1890 edition of The Sheffield & Rotherham Independent, on page six. That relates: “Stocksbridge, noted for its special class of steel manufactures, and the healthy robustness of its Nonconformity, was on Saturday invaded by quite an army of clerical gentlemen on the occasion of the consecration of the handsome new church erected in commemoration of the jubilee of her Majesty, and as a memorial of the late Samuel Fox, the founder of the world-famed firm of Messrs.

Samuel Fox and Co., Limited. For some years the service of the established church has been conducted in the schoolroom, the late Mr. Fox having extended to the cause his patronage and fostering care in every way. The free churches of the district have flourished to such an extent that one of them at least is accredited with having as an auxiliary the pattern school of the Sheffield Sunday School Union. With the growth of the commercial concern, which affords occupation for so many hands, it had long been felt that the accommodation afforded by the church schoolroom was inadequate to the needs of the district. The late Mr. Samuel Fox, some time prior to his lamented decease, had made known his intention to build a church as a memorial to future generations of Queen Victoria’s reign, as a thank offering for the remarkable success which had attended his manufacturing enterprise, but ere his resolve had taken definite shape, or been provided for, his active life ended.

The family of the founder of the works, however, did not allow the project to be forgotten, and at a public meeting in December, 1887, it was decided that in view of the known intention of the late Mr. Fox, a most suitable memorial to him would be the erection of a church at Stocksbridge. Mr. W.H. Fox, son of the deceased, and chairman of the company, had promised £1000, and the sum of £531 was subscribed by the meeting. Messrs. S. Fox and Co., Limited, added £1000, Mr. C. Macro Wilson subscribed £250; the Rev. W. [R?] Wilson, vicar of Bolsterstone, in which parish Stocksbridge is situate, gave £100, as did Mr. J. Jeffrey; Dr. Ward contributed £30; Mr. M.T. Hubis, £25; and the Rev. M. Winter, Mrs de Wend, Mr. W.F. de Wend, Mr. W.F. Read, and Mr. J.D. Webster, £25 each. It may be remarked here that the new church, which is dedicated to Saint Matthias, is the third church built in the parish of Bolsterstone within the last 20 years; Deepcar Church having been erected in 1878, at a cost of £4000; Bolsterstone Church being finished in 1879, at a cost of £5000 (with stained

The lessons appointed were read by the Revs. G. Sandford and S. Greenwood. The church, he said, was intended not only for the worship of the people, but also as a memorial of a good, kind, and generous man, the genius who had founded the chief industry of the neighbourhood, and one

A tide of revived appreciation has swept through countless strata of UK life and it seems that one of these is a return to the country’s classic staples the Royal family and traditional family dinners.

UK mothers have certainly come home to roost with Royal guests and classic dishes as the ultimate dinner party wish list, a new survey by The Red Tractor reveals.

One in four mums said they would most like to invite the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge over to dinner ahead of Dame Judy Dench, Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah and David Beckham according to research by Red Tractor Assurance.

And while most households enjoy watching cookery programmes, the reality of juggling the kids and running a busy household makes mums play it safe when it comes to cooking the evening meal, with over a quarter of families reluctant to take inspiration from television chefs.

Interestingly, over a quarter of husbands polled said they would like to cook something new for their guests but over a half agreed that sticking to tried and tested favourites was the safest bet.

And a remarkable 13 per cent of the respondents confessed that they wouldn’t cook anything for their guests.

The campaign encourages people to ‘Discover More’ with a library card. It highlights the benefits of being a library member whether you’re young, old, retired, a student, a parent or a carer, employed, looking for work, or about to start your own business.

Of course, these days being a library member is still about books, but also so much more.

While your library card gives you access to over half a million

printed books on stock, it also unlocks the door to free eBooks, eMagazines, film, computers and a packed events programme ranging from lectures and baby groups, to coding clubs and craft workshops, poetry classes, business start-up advice sessions and board game evenings.

Penistone men triumph at Askern 10 miler THE latest round of the PFRAC club championship saw runners travel to Askern to undertake the Askern 10 mile road race.

First home for the club in 4th place was the ever improving Gareth Cook (58-06). Gareth led Penistone to the men’s team prize with James Thompson (58-45) and Rob Lees (1-04.16) the other athletes to count.

Elsewhere, other Penistone runners have been turning out with Damian Kilpin fifth in the Bradwell Fell Race in 27.04. The race was 3.7 miles with 755’ of ascent.

At the Skye Highland Games Hill Race, Steve Sanders was 16th in 25.19.

In the Denis Stitt Fell Race, Penistone runners Damian Kilpin (31-26) and Julie Darigala (3910) achieved third male and third female overall in this tough two lap fell race.

Damian and Julie also achieved first position in their respective age categories (MV40 and FV45).

The ladies (Julie Darigala, Ashleigh Bowskill, Sarah Walch) and men’s (Damian Kilpin, Ian Charlesworth, Tom Fryers) teams also both secured second place.

The Owls make history with Yorkshire derby glory SHEFFIELD Wednesday romped home with a 4-0 victory over Leeds United to win the Youdan Trophy on Monday August 6.

The jubilant Owls under 16s team enjoyed a 100% winning record across the tournament which has taken place over four days.

City rivals the Blades didn’t go home empty handed – Sheffield United’s Frankie Maguire won the Youdan Trophy Player of the Tournament.

Seattle Sounders retained their title by winning the under 14s final against Charlton Athletic.

Teams were hand-picked to play in the Youdan Trophy tournament with many flying thousands of miles to compete in Sheffield, the home of football.

The Youdan Trophy takes its name from the man behind the game’s first interclub tournament that was played just once at Bramall Lane in 1867.

Church through to next round of FA Cup PENISTONE Church moved through to the next round of the Emirates FA Cup after beating Bootle 2-1 in the extra preliminary round stage on Saturday.

Grandma and grandson take titles

Local Sport Double disappointment STOCKSBRIDGE Cricket Club suffered a double disappointment this week with the first and second teams both losing.

The first XI who had all but guaranteed a midtable finish welcomed relegation threatened Totley to Bracken Moor. A new look Totley who seemed to have added to their ranks from the reverse fixture won the toss and elected to bat.

Stocksbridge handed 1st team debuts to youngsters Cameron Illingworth-Ralph and Jack Firth who didn’t look out of place in the field, putting themselves about brilliantly and IllingworthRalph also took and excellent catch. Totley got off to a flyer before openers Jake Vickers (12-342-2) and Jack Newton (11-1-52-3) started to remove the top order and slow the run rate back down. Les Harris and Liam Grayson then came into the attack and both got into the wickets early thanks to two very good catches on the boundary from Matt Price. At 110-7 Totley looked in real danger however an excellent late flurry from the Totley lower order got them up to 192 all out with Harris finishing with 4-52 off eight overs and Grayson with 1-36 off 8 overs respectively.

A FAMILY were celebrating this week after a grandma and grandson both won bowling titles.

At the Sheffield & District Parks Association Civics Competition, Joan Ramage, from Thorncliffe

Bowling Club in High Green and aged 85, won the Ladies Vets Civics and her grandson, 13-year-old Jacob Parratt from Thurgoland Bowling Club, won the Junior Civics.

The competition is run at Hillsborough Park Bowling Club every year in August, with anyone in Sheffield & District being able to enter, from the age of seven.

Mayne crowned 2018 champion

BIRDWELL Wheelers 10 Mile Club Championship Time Trial took place on Tuesday on the course at Park Springs.

Tuesday August 14 is the date for the club’s first hill climb on America Lane at Brampton Bierlow. First rider is off at 7:01pm and signing on is from 6:30pm.

On Sunday Trevor Mayne, Phil Adams, Robert Parkes, John Woodhouse, Austin D Watson and Steve Myatt in glorious weather rode a hilly 60 mile route to Hope in the Peak District.

A slight blip for the 1st XI whose form had dramatically improved over recent weeks, however they will be looking to bounce back next week straight as they travel to Hathersage.

Stocksbridge CC second team travelled to Hathersage with only nine players to play a fellow relegation opponent after a great win the previous week. The home team won the toss and elected to bat on an interesting looking wicket and set a solid base and went from 50-2 to 170-3 with wickets from Jim Tomlinson (12-2-39-2) and Mark Wingfield (6-1-37-1). Some late wickets and excellent bowling from Chris Thwaites (11-3-21-2) and Rowan Brearley (11-0-59-2) kept Hathersage to a total of 195-7 when they looked like setting 220 plus.

Fastest on the night and 2018 champion was Trevor Mayne.

First on handicap was Paul Heggie.

At the halfway mark Stocksbridge felt confident that the target wasn’t out of sight on a good batting wicket with a fast outfield. However the Totley bowling line-up bowled with pace and accuracy and ripped apart the Stocksbridge batsmen.

Stocksbridge fell considerable short after being bowled out for a miserly 57 with only Matthew Price making double figures as he finished with 31.

Stocksbridge responded by trying set a platform to chase the runs down and got to 45-1 before losing a cluster of wickets which left them trying to gain points out of the game rather than win it. An excellent rear guard partnership from Paul Hargreaves (29) and Mark Wingfield (19), who batted for 20 overs, gained vital points for Stocksbridge and restricted the opposition’s points as well which could be vital at the end of the season. Stocksbridge showed great character and attitude in a difficult game with a depleted team; this will be needed in their final fixtures of the season and next week as they entertain league leaders Sheffield Transport at Bracken Moor.

PIGS WARM UP FOR TOURNAMENT WITH COMPETITIVE DRAW

STOCKSBRIDGE RUFC have the first friendly run out of the season behind them - a creditable 19-19 draw away at Hope Valley Rugby.

their intentions to the annual Bradfield Brewery pre-season tournament to be played at Coal Pit Lane on Saturday, with the first game scheduled for 2pm.

Tries came from Adam Frith, Ryan Smith and Ben Westby with Frith and Adam Brown adding a conversion each.

This prestigious and growing event will be contested by the home side, plus holders and favourites Rotherham Phoenix, with Sheffield Oaks and Hope Valley also participating.

Tournament sponsors, Bradfield Brewery, will have a pop-up bar on site and the official catering partners are Tenter House Farm, so there is food and drink for all. There will also be a junior exhibition match in the run up to the final and the young Piggies will be looking to showcase their ever-improving skills.

to run the rule over his growing first team squad with newcomers Arron Kite, Dale Charlesworth, Steve Hawksworth and Connor Price are set to debut. Returning back rower Matt Nesbitt and James Neal also sure to feature at some stage.

Rhys said: “We are in it to win but I’m more looking to the performances and shapes we play.”
