CHRISTMAS SPIRIT PREVAILS AS TREE TAKES A TUMBLE A Junior Football Club's festive celebrations took an unexpected turn on Saturday night as a powerful combination of wind and rain led to a tree falling across the only access road to the venue.
The incident, which occurred during the Oughtibridge WM junior club's Christmas party in their clubhouse at the War Memorial Ground, created a unique and memorable night for players and their families. The relentless weather conditions had caused the River Don to swell, pushing the tree to its limits. As it toppled, it brought down an electricity wire, plunging most of the clubhouse into darkness. With the fallen tree blocking the only access point, attendees found themselves stranded, unable to retrieve their cars or pass through on foot due to the added danger of live electricity wires.

In a heartwarming display of community spirit, Christmas cheer prevailed as partygoers, faced with an unexpected obstacle, found refuge at the Cock Inn nearby. Neighbours pitched in to assist, offering alternative routes through back gardens back to ’civilisation’ until the arrival of emergency services.

Adding to the joy of the season, amidst the chaos, the club welcomed its newest member, Wren, the younger sister of two players, who was born during the event.

Rob Hutchison, Oughtibridge Chairman, and Junior Club Manager, shared his thoughts on the memorable night, stating, "A great night of family festive fun will always be remembered thanks to that fallen tree. We talk as a club about creating good memories for players and their families, and this one will definitely be talked about fondly for years to come! A big thanks to the fire service who responded quickly to secure the electricity danger and the local resident who opened his back gate late at night in the strong wind and rain to provide everyone with a way to get safely home."

CAZ: New data shows a drop in pollution Following the launch of Sheffield’s Clean Air Zone (CAZ) earlier this year, data shows there has been a significant increase in compliant vehicles driving in the CAZ and wider areas of the city. The proportion of more polluting vehicles driving through Sheffield has fallen by up to two-thirds according to information taken from a survey in October 2023 when compared with the same survey from November 2022.
fallen by nearly two-thirds overall with big improvements across all vehicle types. Private Hire Vehicles are now 96 percent compliant compared to 77 percent before the CAZ was launched and Light Goods Vehicles are now 84 percent compliant compared to 59 percent before. The data shows that vehicles in Sheffield haven’t just improved within the CAZ boundary, but this benefit is also seen outside of the zone.
The city’s CAZ came into effect on Monday 27 February 2023, with the aim to reduce the harmful levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) across Sheffield caused by polluting traffic. The Class C charging zone requires the most heavily polluting, non-compliant lorries, vans, buses, coaches and taxis to pay a fee to drive into the zone, with a view to encourage motorist to upgrade their vehicles to cleaner ones. Private passenger cars and motorbikes are not affected.
Cllr Ben Miskell (pictured), Chair of the Transport, Regeneration and Climate committee at Sheffield City Council said: “Hundreds of people in Sheffield die prematurely each year due to air pollution, cleaning up the quality of the air we breathe around Sheffield is rightly one of our top priorities and this data shows that motorists are helping by moving to cleaner vehicles in response to the Clean Air Zone.
In the first, Council-led, fleet data to be released since the zone was brought into operation, the number of polluting vehicles using the CAZ has

The council also met regularly with local businesses to best understand their needs and tailor support to their requirements, where possible. Cllr Miskell continued: “Ahead of the launch of the CAZ, we petitioned the government hard to provide the best possible financial support package for local people and it’s great to see so many people applying for support to upgrade their vehicle. The Financial Assistance Scheme support is still available to those wishing to upgrade and we would encourage people to apply. The support package includes: A Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS) to support people to upgrade to a cleaner vehicle. The Retrospective Scheme, which provided financial support towards the costs incurred for those who have already upgraded their vehicles. This scheme is no longer available. An automatic exemption from CAZ charges for all Hackney Carriage Taxi’s, for over three months.

YOUNGEST BLACK BELT Teenager becomes Youngest Judo Black Belt in the country
In an extraordinary feat, Ruby Plane, a 15-year-old student from Stocksbridge High School, clinched the title of the youngest Judo black belt in the country. The achievement was realised during a dan grading event in South Shields, on Sunday, November 26th where Ruby successfully accumulated the final points required for this prestigious milestone, marking her accomplishment at the age of 15 years and 1 day. A proud member of the Miramar Judo Club in Rotherham, Ruby was bestowed with her black belt by the club's senior coach, Andy Parton, in a special presentation held during a
year 10 assembly at Stocksbridge High School. The International Judo Federation, describing the black belt as possessing a mysterious dimension that transforms from a childhood dream into an attained goal through dedication and hard work, emphasizes the significance of such an accomplishment in the realm of Judo. Ruby's Judo club, Miramar, expressed their admiration for her dedication, stating, “Ruby has worked for years towards this. She seldom misses a session and she trains with focus and intensity. Nobody has ever deserved a black belt more. To have
earned it at such a young age is unprecedented, and is a great credit to her, parents Alicia and Barry, and of course Andy her coach. We're all so proud of you Ruby, and we can't wait to see what the future holds for you.” Phil Banton, the Head of PE at Stocksbridge High School, shared his enthusiasm, saying, “We are really proud of Ruby’s achievement, and it was a pleasure to see it recognised with her coach in the school assembly.” Ruby's exceptional accomplishment serves as an inspiration and a testament to the remarkable talent within the local community.

Wentworth Woodhouse: MP seeks A Tale As Old As Time Christmas Experience and Enchanting Light Trail Draws Hundreds
In a magical spectacle that brings history to life, Wentworth Woodhouse in Rotherham has unveiled its enchanting Christmas experience, "A Tale As Old As Time." The Grade I listed stately home has been transformed into a fairy-tale setting, captivating hundreds of visitors who have flocked to witness the magic. The interactive experience, meticulously staged and crafted by dedicated staff and volunteers, invites guests to traverse the historic property after an enchanting spell has been cast upon it. The corridors and State Rooms of the mansion have been turned into scenes reminiscent of Sleeping Beauty's castle, adorned with hand-built props, haunting soundscapes, and carefully curated foliage and twisting branches from the estate's gardens. Children, as they explore the magical setting, are on a quest to find a hidden trail of camellias, known for their significance in the mansion's renowned camellia collection—one of the oldest in the Western world. Breaking this hidden trail of flowers is said to lift the spell on the house, restoring life and laughter to its grand halls. Running until December 29, the event pays homage to Wentworth Woodhouse's rich history—from opulent
Christmas parties hosted by the Marquesses of Rockingham and the Earls Fitzwilliam to its decline in the 20th century and its subsequent revival through a multi-million pound regeneration led by the Preservation Trust, which assumed ownership in 2017. Complementing the enchanting Christmas experience is an impressive Light Trail in the West Front Gardens, open each evening from dusk until 9 pm until January 7. The trail features fairy doors, hidden woodland creatures, and a spectacular light tunnel finale that leads towards the illuminated mansion. The West Front Gardens provide a picturesque backdrop for families and visitors seeking an extra dose of festive magic. Adding to the festivities, a festive steam train is operating on the grounds, offering an additional adventure for attendees at a nominal cost of £2.50 per person. Wentworth Woodhouse's magical Christmas experience and Light Trail offer a captivating blend of history, enchantment, and festive cheer, creating cherished memories for visitors of all ages.
Percy Pud victim of weather again Once again, inclement weather has played spoilsport, forcing the cancellation of the much-anticipated Percy Pud 10k running event. The popular annual event, held in the picturesque Loxley Valley each December, has been a staple for both seasoned and amateur runners who eagerly anticipate the unique reward of a Christmas pudding for their efforts.
Initially scheduled for last weekend, the 30th edition of the Percy Pud was postponed due to overnight snowfall. Organisers had rescheduled the 10k to take place on Sunday, December
10th. However, the persistent impact of poor weather led to the regrettable decision to cancel the event once again.
Expressing disappointment, event organiser Alan Barnett of the Steel City Striders running club conveyed, "We are completely gutted and heartbroken and would ask for your patience while we decide the next course of action. The course is not safe with masses of branches in the road, a tree is down, and many large standing water pools take up half the road."
The adverse weather conditions over the weekend wreaked havoc, causing damage to both marquees that were intended for use during the event. Strong gusts and torrential rain battered swathes of Yorkshire, contributing to the destruction. Mr. Barnett assured registered participants that they would be contacted in due course regarding the cancellation. The organisers are undoubtedly facing the challenge of determining the most appropriate course of action for the beloved running event, con-
Safety in Women and Girls' Football Local MP Miriam Cates is leading a campaign to protect the safety of women and girls playing football after recent incidents of players being injured by a biological male playing for a South Yorkshire women's team. The MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge has organised a letter to the Football Association, signed by over 70 parliamentarians, calling for new rules preventing anyone who was born a man from playing for women's and girls' teams. The letter makes the point that men are generally stronger, heavier, and faster than women, and their inclusion in female teams undermines both safety and fairness in the sport. Their letter cites the recent controversy in a South Yorkshire women's league where several clubs refused to play against a team fielding a transgender player after their shot caused a season-ending injury to an opponent's knee. This led to at least four other clubs in the Sheffield and Hallamshire Women's Football League refusing to play against Rossington Main, and was raised by Mrs Cates in the House of Commons. Speaking about the campaign and the urgent need for new rules, Miriam Cates said: "It has been wonderful to watch the success of the Lionesses and the growing popularity of the women's game, but con-
sidering the safety hazards posed by the current conditions. As the running community grapples with this unfortunate turn of events, the hope is that future
tinued success depends on women being able to compete safely and fairly at all levels of the game. "It is simply not tenable to allow men to compete in women's football. We cannot ignore the lifelong competitive advantage in terms of muscle mass, strength, weight and height enjoyed by someone who has gone through male puberty. Women are entitled to dignity and privacy, yet will also be expected to share changing rooms with men under the FA's current policy. "We cannot ask women and girls to give up places on football teams and in competitions that should rightfully be theirs." Unlike other UK sports governing bodies such as the Rugby Football Union and British Cycling, the FA has not changed its policy on trans people in football in the wake of growing concern over the impact transgender inclusion has on women's participation. The FA said last month it was working with the Sheffield and Hallamshire County FA to find a resolution regarding the Rossington case. It said: “This issue is complex and constantly evolving and, like many other national governing bodies in sport, we are currently reviewing our transgender policy for English football to ensure it is inclusive, fair and safe for all.”
editions of the Percy Pud will see more favourable weather conditions, allowing runners to once again enjoy the scenic route and earn their coveted Christmas puddings.

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION (FoI) In Issue 1233 of Look Local, I asked: “What of the investigation report from Law firm Bevan Brittan?” Well, on 22/3/2022, The Yorkshire Post (TYP) reported that Sheffield City Council (SCC) had expected completion by May 2021. On 23/8/2021, TYP reported that the SCC Deputy Leader (Julie Grocutt) had said that SCC had estimated that the report would cost £24,700. In an FoI response dated 22/12/2022, SCC informed that they received ‘provisional findings’ on 16/2/2022 and the final report on 10/8/2022: ‘Sheffield City Council Freedom of Information Act 2000 & Environmental Information Regulations 2004 Evaluation Report’ (dated July 2022). A redacted version was made public in December 2022. BBC News (6/12/2022) & TYP (7/12/2022) reported that the Bevan Brittain inquiry had cost SCC £35,900. The latter added that the report had only been released “this week”. Extracts from the Bevan Brittan report: “1.5.5) …our ability to evaluate …has been significantly hampered by the Council’s inability to locate and provide us with all of the relevant information. […] Without access to the information sought under each request, it has not been possible to consider the application of exemptions/exceptions and understand the approach taken by the Council. This has also limited our ability to make findings and recommendations. 4.3) We would however still expect the Council to have a suitable document management system in place and the lack of information had a significant impact on our ability to determine whether s.42 FoIA/Reg.12(5)(b) EIR has been correctly applied. 4.5.1) …in many instances the information that was requested by the applicant could not be provided. The Council was unable to locate the information falling within the scope of the request, which raises concerns regarding records management, and the possibility that disclosure may have been refused when the information falling within the scope of the requests had not been located, retrieved or

reviewed in some instances. In the alternative, information may have been subsequently deleted or lost after responding to a request, without a suitable audit trail to demonstrate the approach taken by the Council…”
maintenance programme. It is remarkable that the Council would need 2,404 hours in order to comply with this request and verify the location of the 143 trees, all of which to confirm the accuracy of a statement made by a local councillor. From the Council’s submissions it is clear that its records do not afford much transparency for the work that is being carried out, and this does not serve the campaign groups in their attempts to gain information about the work of the maintenance programme.
This suggests continued non-feasance by SCC. On 4/10/2017, following investigation of a deceitful assertion, by the SCC Cabinet Member for Environment & Transport, the Information Commissioner’s Office issued a Decision Notice (Ref: FS50637180). Selected extracts: “40: The section 46 Code of Practice* provides guidance on effective record management policies and why this is of benefit for both public authorities and requesters alike. The following extract comes from paragraph 9.3 and deals with what record systems should be held: ‘9.3: RECORDS SYSTEMS should be designed to meet the authority’s operational needs and using them SHOULD BE AN INTEGRAL PART OF BUSINESS OPERATIONS AND PROCESSES. Records systems should have the following characteristics: a) THEY SHOULD BE EASY TO UNDERSTAND AND USE so as to reduce the effort required of those who create and use the records within them. Ease of use is an important consideration when developing or selecting a system; b) THEY SHOULD ENABLE QUICK AND EASY RETRIEVAL OF INFORMATION. With digital systems this should include the capacity to search for information requested under the Act; […] h) THEY SHOULD ENABLE AN AUDIT TRAIL to be produced of occasions on which selected records have been seen, used, amended and deleted.’ 41) …records are not easy to use, do not allow for quick retrieval, and – from what the Council said about ongoing changes to the records – do not allow for it go back and determine what information would have been held. 42) The Commissioner recommends that the Council looks at creating a central record for the work that is due to be carried out for its

43) The Commissioner… would also note that the delay could have been greatly reduced had the Council not failed to confirm that the information was held on its behalf. Added to this is the fact that the Commissioner needed to interrogate the idea that Amey had complied with a request which took 2,404 hours of its staff ’s time at Councillor Fox’s behest.” * See: ‘Lord Chancellor’s Code of Practice on the Management of Records, issued under section 46 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000’, published by the Ministry of Justice, on 16/7/2009 (superseded on 15/7/2021). Dear Editor,
This Christmas, Starlight estimates over 100,000 children across the UK will spend the festive period in hospital, feeling scared and missing out on Christmas celebrations. No child wants to be stuck in hospital, away from their home and family, especially at Christmas. I’m urging your readers to support Starlight and put a smile on a child’s face. At Starlight, we know that play has the power to make the hospital experience better for children, which can be life-changing for them and their family. Throughout the festive season Starlight provides hospitals with play resources, gifts, and live pantomimes to brighten a child’s stay and boost their wellbeing and resilience during treatment.

All the money donated will go towards making a child’s stay in hospital brighter this Christmas. Please visit www.starsforstarlight.org.uk and give the gift of play. Thank you so much for your support, Dr Krutika Pau Deputy CEO of Starlight and Director of Children’s Services
‘Keep your cool’ at Christmas Dear Editor The run-up to Christmas is always a really busy time for retail workers, as shoppers can be stressed and things can boil over. The timing of Christmas this year means that we anticipate especially busy stores the week before, culminating in what the retail industry has branded ‘Super Saturday’ on 23 December. I want to gently ask your readers to remember that shopworkers are people too. They will be working really hard to make your shopping experience as enjoyable as possible and deserve respect. Talking to our members who work in retail, I know that verbal abuse cuts deep. Many will go home after a shift upset about an unpleasant incident that took place at work that day and worried that it will happen to them again. That is why Usdaw, the shopworkers’ trade union, is asking customers to ‘Keep your Cool’, so that everyone can have a happier Christmas. With season’s greetings. Paddy Lillis General Secretary (Usdaw)
Stocksbridge town council workers We would like to say thank you to the Stocksbridge town council workers and volunteers for a very enjoyable Christmas party. They all worked so hard to make it a special afternoon.
For just £10 you can Sponsor a star on Oxford Street in London and help bring the magical power of play to children in hospitals all over the UK.
Thank you. Margaret Glenys Geoff Maureen.
Chorus nominated for Award The Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus (SPC) are delighted to announce that they have recently been shortlisted for a prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society (RPS) award. Known as the BAFTAS of the classical music world, the RPS Awards are a sought after achievement by both amateur and professional musicians alike. Recently introduced into the awards list, the ‘Inspiration Award’ is for a non-professional ensemble or individual who works with such groups, in recognition of the remarkable constellation of such music-makers. The SPC are delighted to have been shortlisted out of an outstanding pool of groups and music-makers. The nomination celebrates the choir’s support for young musicians, in particular the Stella Jockel Young Composer Competition, which was brought to life at the finale of the Classical Sheffield Festival Weekend 2023. The competition, in its inaugural year, attracted fourteen high-quality pieces of music to be judged by a panel of experts, including conductor and composer George Nicholson, Emeritus Professor of Composition
at the University of Sheffield. Two of the shortlisted candidates won the top prize, and received their prizes from the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, SionedMair Richards. The text for the competition was set by award-winning Sheffield poet Katherine Towers, and it encouraged the young composers to think outside the box when writing their pieces. Joint winners Mason Birch and James Thomas wowed the judges and the 1400-strong audience at Sheffield City Hall with their talent and fine ear for composition. The competition was set up in memory of former SPC member Stella Jockel, who supported young musicians throughout her life, using part of a generous legacy left to the Chorus when she passed in 2020. The SPC is South Yorkshire’s foremost large mixed-voice chorus, performing a range of works to a high level of musical excellence. The Chorus regularly sings with leading orchestras including the Hallé, BBC Philharmonic, Northern Sinfonia and the Manchester Camerata. The SPC performs with acclaimed conductors and soloists as part of the Sheffield Inter-
national Concert Season at Sheffield City Hall, and at other venues across the UK.
Described by The Sunday Times as ‘the biggest night in UK classical music’, the Royal Philharmonic Society Awards are classical music’s annual good news story, shining much-needed light on inspirational individuals, groups and initiatives whose music has lifted hearts and minds across the nation. Joanne Briddock, SPC’s Chair, said “I am absolutely delighted that Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus has been nominated for this important award. It is wonderful to be recognised for our efforts to develop new music and young composers alongside our existing musical activities. We are totally thrilled!” The awards night takes place on Tuesday 5 March 2024, however the vote for the Inspiration Award is down to a public vote via the RPS website. To support the chorus for their work with young musicians, follow the link and cast your vote!

Festival of Light rescheduled The annual St Luke’s Hospice Festival of Light switch-on will now go ahead on Wednesday December 20. The original launch date of December 3 had to be cancelled after heavy snowfalls made the hospice gardens inaccessible. But weather permitting, the ceremony has now been rescheduled for December 20, with visitors invited to attend a smaller-scale event from 5.30pm for a 6pm light switch-on. And once again, the evening will be hosted by BBC Radio Sheffield presenter Paulette Edwards, who will be joined for the official countdown by Michael King, whose wife Michelle was a St Luke’s patient. “We want to thank people for their understanding and kind messages following the difficult decision to cancel the original event but we really do want to make sure our supporters can still join us for this very special evening of remembrance,” said St Luke’s Head of Fundraising Joasia Lesniak. “While we won’t be able to hold the full event as planned for December 3, we hope that you will join us to remember your loved ones in our gardens as we switch on our lights in a smaller Festival of Light event. “It will be an opportunity to bring families together, reflect on time spent together and also
to bring our St Luke’s community together before Christmas. “Although we won’t be able to host food or drink stalls on the night as originally planned, we will be offering light festive refreshments, and there will be music and our dedicated name boards and screens for viewing. “There will also be the chance to light a candle for your loved one and share a moment of reflection together. “We are delighted too that Paulette will be hosting and that Michael will be able to share the story of his wife Michelle with our guests. “For those unable to join us on Wednesday December 20, please remember that after this date, our lights will be on throughout the gardens and the Book of Remembrance available in our chapel for people to view at their leisure too.”

For those unable to join the celebration, St Luke’s will be offering to send out a copy of the original event programme which includes the names of each dedication. To register interest in attending or for more information visit stlukeshospice.org.uk

Police in Sheffield have released a CCTV image of a man they would like to speak to in connection with an alleged burglary. It is reported that on 26 November at 2.15am, a laptop and house keys were stolen during a break-in at a property in Middlewood Road, Hillsborough, with a man seen in the house at the time of the incident. Officers believe the reported burglary is linked to an attempted break-in at a property in Minto Road a short time earlier. An investigation is ongoing but officers are keen to identify the man in the CCTV image as they feel he may be able to assist with enquiries. He has been described as a white male with a face covering, who was wearing a cap and a black puffer coat.
HERITAGE LIST Over the last couple of years, local residents and members of Bolsterstone Archaeology and Heritage Group have been submitting nominations for the South Yorkshire Local Heritage List, which featured in Look Local earlier this year.
The List is a register of landscapes, buildings and monuments which otherwise have no protection such as listing or scheduling – they could be industrial sites, parks, milestones, an archaeological feature, the possibilities are endless. They are places which give an area character and are important to people, and the status gives some protection in any proposals for development. The nominations are entered online and processed by the South Yorkshire Archaeology Service, which is part of Sheffield City Council. Each one is checked over and consulted on and then goes to an assessment panel before it is accepted on the List. There are now 128 assets listed in Sheffield alone, 231 across
South Yorkshire, and many more are awaiting approval. Ruth Morgan, BAHG said “We have just heard that the Bolsterstone’s (in Bolsterstone churchyard) and Walder’s Low have been approved, to add to the already listed Fox’s office block and early mill buildings, St Matthias church and the Friendship pub; still to finish the process are the Clock Tower and Hunshelf Bank water reservoir. Anyone can submit details of buildings and sites that are important to their community, and which contribute to the distinctiveness and history of South Yorkshire, by taking photos, doing some research and uploading them to the website at local-heritage-list.org. uk/south-yorkshire. We need to keep submitting nominations to show how much we value the character of our local area.

Ruby grabs series silver Speedway FIXTURES RELEASED
SHEFFIELD will open their defence of the Sports Insure Premiership title with a home fixture against top-flight newcomers Oxford. The Tru Plant Tigers will host the Spires at Owlerton on Thursday, March 21 (7.30) with their first away meeting against the league's other elevated side Birmingham on Monday, March 25 (7.30). Elsewhere, Simon Stead's side will also travel to Belle Vue on three of the four Bank Holiday Mondays, each a 12 noon start, including their Knockout Cup Quarter-Final tie on Monday, April 1 with the sides again drawn against one another in the competition. A reminder that 2024 Season Tickets are now available and can be purchased online via: http:// sheffield-speedway.com/ticketoffice
The rescheduled Percy Pud 10k again fell victim to the weather, this time due to high winds. So the focus of attention switched to the final fixture in the South Yorkshire Cross Country league which took place at a muddy Graves Park in Sheffield. Ruby Syke’s fourth place in the senior ladies cemented her consistent form across the series and rewarded her with silver for the overall series. Kai Suman also finished highly to give him a top ten place in the series. The Penistone men’s team ran consistently across the series and should retain their division one status in the league for next year. James Mumford ran strongly to finish second in the men’s over40 age category at the
Stockport 10 mile race. He finished 33rd overall in 1-01-15. The race was run in wet and windy conditions and included a 1.5 mile off road section on farm tracks. The penultimate winter handicap took place around the hills of Penistone on an icy Tuesday night. Matt Coldwell claimed the overall victory in the handicapped race. Fastest lady on the night was Suzanne McGill and fastest man was George Parr. George also claimed first spot in the age graded times just edging out Barbara Haigh. Two Penistone runners competed in the Bah Humbug 10k which takes place in South Leeds. Alex Melhuish was first back in 51-26 followed by Peter Beever in 5809.
On the parkrun scene Dawn Broom was first at The Old Railway Track parkrun in Llangollen. Ashley Firth was placed second at the Rothwell parkrun as was Oliver France at Penistone. Barnsley Parkrun 7, Phillip Hinchliffe 20-46; 20, Michael Walsh 23-55; 33, Robin D Clough 25-29; 44, Mark Law 27-46; 58, Susan Hall 2944; 59, Stuart Smith 29-45; 94, Raymond Brown 52-49; 95, Andrew Taylor 52-51. Penistone Parkrun 2, Oliver France 20-35; 5, Oliver Pike 21-10; 13, Monty Hallam 23-56; 21, Chris Baldwin 25-29; 28, Michael Nicholson 26-22; 55, Bernice Nixon 29-55; 69, Daniel Batty 31-09; 81, Peter Stanley 34-57.
Football Continues Support for Food Bank Ahead of Christmas Stocksbridge Park Steels FC is once again stepping up to support the local community as the festive season approaches. The football club has announced that it will continue its partnership with the Stocksbridge Foodbank, aiming to make a significant impact on those in need during the holidays. Throughout December, Stocksbridge Park Steels FC will actively collect food donations at their home fixtures. The initiative, which began last year, has proven to be a success, fostering a strong collaboration between the football club and the local Foodbank. In a statement released by the club, they expressed their commitment to surpassing last year's achievements and providing aid to as many people as possible during these challenging times. The club has been working closely with Liberty Steel works, a key partner in this charitable endeavour. Liberty Steel Works will be facilitating food collection at their main reception, further expanding the reach of the initiative.
Last year's collaboration between Stocksbridge Park Steels FC and the Foodbank laid the foundation for a meaningful partnership. This year, the club is introducing a new dimension to their efforts by accepting cash donations. This addition will allow the Foodbank to purchase essential items that may not be readily available through traditional food drives. Individuals who wish to contribute and show their support for this cause can easily do so by contacting the club or the Foodbank directly. The collective goal is to make a positive impact on the community during the festive season and provide assistance to those facing hardships. As the festive spirit takes hold, Stocksbridge Park Steels FC calls on its supporters, residents, and businesses to join hands in making a difference. By combining efforts, the football club and the Foodbank aim to bring warmth and sustenance to those who need it the most, embodying the true spirit of community and compassion.

Cross Country Late call off
frustrates Rugby Club A disappointing late call off, due to a waterlogged pitch at Hessle RUFC, in the shadows of the Humber Bridge, made it three postponed games for Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby & more congestion for their fixture pile up.
The meeting time had just passed and Stocksbridge were just about to set off for Humberside when news of the failed pitch inspection came through. There were a couple of games played in the Yorkshire 4 Counties competition, with next week’s visitors to the Coal Pit Lane stadium, 2nd placed Thornensians suffering a 13-12 reverse to Leeds Modernians. Stocksbridge remain in 12th position in the league ladder, but with games in hand, they will be looking to climb towards mid-table. The Round 12 clash against Thornensians is a 2.15pm kick-off, and is the Club’s Christmas Jumper fixture, the final game of 2023. Stocksbridge Rugby will begin 2024 with a tough Round 13 assignment away at Leeds Modernians on Saturday 20th January.
Valley hill runners had a team at the cross country in Graves park, on Saturday. Sadly due to illness, the team only had 3 men but the lads ploughed on in the horrendous conditions. After a weekend of rain the park was wet and very muddy but the ‘three musketeers’ carried on to complete the crosscountry series. Michael Savage, Jonny Briggs, Steve Sansom pictured.
Given the time of Year, Club Chairman Phil Watts, on behalf of the Club would like to thanks the many sponsors who support the Team: Globe Holidays, Fox Catering, Goodlad Contracting, Bradfield Brewery, John Heath & Sons, Asphalt Grid Systems, Uni Block, Funding Solutions, John Crawshaw Butchers, JP Cooling Services & Premier Stone Worktops Ltd, ‘we are thankful & proud to partner with our loyal sponsors’ said Watts, before adding, ‘we wish them all & all of Stocksbridge a very Merry Christmas, & hope to see you in the Clubhouse during the holiday period’.
