Principal’s Message Key Thoughts for Success My dear Form Fives, I once read an article on self-development that said: “Success does not belong to a select few; Success belongs to you once you are willing to go after it.” As you leave the Five Rivers Secondary School environment, I want you to remember those words as you go about your daily Iives. I have used and continue to use those words to inspire myself to succeed. In other words anyone can and will be successful once you decide you want it. First, however you must have a vision for yourself. Where do you want to be in the future? Then, you set goals and timelines. From my observations of hundreds of students, the ones that do achieve

success are not necessarily the ones who are the brightest or the strongest but the ones who are unrelenting in the pursuit of their goals. These individuals are always committed and determined. Even if they experience failure, they get up and move on. They never give up. I would also like to add that as you pursue your goals towards success that you must never be afraid to extend yourself and move out of your comfort zone. Always strive for excellence. Being the best that you can be will guarantee success. The last thought I would like to leave with you would be to surround yourself with the right people. Success is never achieved in isolation. We depend on the

people around us to support us and encourage us. We are also influenced by the people around us so one must therefore ensure that the people that are in our closest circles are positive and successful, people who will uplift us and carry us in the direction of our vision. Students, you are about to embark on some of the best years of your life. Please do not blame any lack of success on the government, the environment or even social media. You are in control of your destiny and your success will ultimately be determined by you. I do wish you all the best in your future endeavours.

ongratulations to the class of 2017! As you prepare to take your place as graduates of the Five Rivers Secondary School, I take the opportunity to commend you on having successfully negotiated the many obstacles that have marked your progress through the institution. As an administrator, I consider it a privilege to have assisted in your educational and personal growth.

Through school activities, helping others and dealing with the many changes in your personal life and at school, we have seen many of you grow from shy, awkward, young children to young adults. It is hoped that you are well prepared to tackle the next set of life challenges which will ensure your further growth. Let me thank those parents who have willingly helped the school and participated in their child’s/ ward’s education. We have valued their input at all times.

We began our journey together on the 3rd September 2012 as Form 1:1, we are now at the end, 5:1 April 2017. It has been a long, tiring, rewarding and enjoyable voyage. As your Form Teacher I had the privilege of seeing you all grow and develop into young men and women. My many sayings you would remember as well as forget, however, the realisation that we are at the end is here. Remember I always said that the end would come; it is here.

Recognition for her Innovation SHEYNOI BETHELMY

Sheynoi Bethelmy with the We Stand For Green (WES4G) science club was welcomed by the Ambassador of The Republic of Panama Ambassador H. E Carmen Mene’dez on the occasion of the National Day of Panama. The 2015 National winners were invited to the screening of the film Historias del Canal.

Sheynoi Bethelmy winning smile. National Sagicor Visionaries Challenge 2015 winner with the cardboard box recycle project. The school feeding lunch boxes were collected after the students. These boxes were reused for a growing medium and some converted into brisquettes –a substitute for coals. (Yes BBQ chicken with the lunch box brisquette!)

Recognition for her Perseverance ASHLEY BOWEN Ashley Bowen is a student of the 2015 – 2017 Family Resource and Management class. Ms. Bowen was introduced late to the class having been transferred from another class. She is faced with personal and social challenges which have been affecting her school attendance. Having to play “catch up” in this new class did not make her school experiences any better. It was an “eureka” experience that has made Ashley an inspiration to all struggling students and a joy to the teaching-learning process. Ms. Bowen’s “sudden, unexpected realisation of the solution” to her underachievement in class occurred during a lesson on

Values and its relationship to decision making, attitude and goals. This class experience led her to engage in the introspection of her values and to the discovery of the relationship between her school challenges and her values. Ashley recognised the urgency to modify her hierarchy of values. The eureka experience motivated her to prioritise her education. It was instant. She announced her

decision to be regular at school; she devoted her break time, lunch time and late evenings to complete her 16 projects for her portfolio and to prepare for her SBA. Ashley was energised to succeed so-much-so not even the shortage of resources was going to deter her from reaching her goal. Her focus and determination led her to harvest pommerac from her back yard and sold them to finance her educational pursuit. Today Ashley’s perseverance has made her the top performing student in the Family and Resource Management class. Ashley we are proud of you! May Father YAHWEH bless in your CSEC exams and your future career.
