Founded in 1894, the YWCA Greater Los Angeles is a women’s membership movement built on the mission of eliminating racism and empowering women.

As a YWCA, we advocate for justice and dignity for all people. For over a century, the YWCA Greater Los Angeles has provided housing and supportive services. YWCA Greater Los Angeles is pioneering a model of community centers and housing - co-created with diverse stakeholders - to transform lives, build self-reliance and, ultimately, strengthen communities. This year we celebrate 120 years of service to the community. For twelve decades, the YWCA Greater Los Angeles has been a “Voice to the Voiceless” - boldly reaching beyond the normal, expected path of service to offer the most poignant and effective programs.

As we remember, I wonder what it must have been like for those founding women and their 300 members in 1894 - if we could hear their passions and dreams, even their fears. These pioneers courageously set out to make life better, more empowered for women and their families – and that’s what they did. In 1913, the YWCA Los Angeles became a forerunner in empowering foreign-born women through the “International Institute”. During World War II, YWCA of Los Angeles extended services and personnel to Japanese women and families in ten Relocation Centers. Just three years later, these leaders adopted the Interracial Charter at the YWCA convention - eight years before the Supreme Court’s decision on desegregation. We celebrate this history of courage that dares to address the most pressing needs of women and families.

Over the last decade, the YWCA Greater Los Angeles has accomplished forward-thinking solutions for the community.

We have embraced a partnership concept that extends the best services possible to our constituents. Recent executive business decisions have generated more than a 400% increase in our physical assets. We pride ourselves as being the architect of ideas and the developer of programs as we continue establishing an increased and robust response to community needs.

Even though times have changed drastically since our founders made that bold step to organize 120 years ago – one thread of commonality that remains is our backbone of courage. We are driven to question the ills of society with a collective voice, pushing for change and justice.

The YWCA has stood the test of time through wars, political unrest, economic growth, and depression. The organization has been a beacon, a light throughout history. Our past is a reminder that it takes courage and strength to change the future and address the needs of now. As we remember those who have gone before us, we are humbled that we get to join their story, this movement. We will press on. We will continue breaking the mold and fighting for those who are under served or disenfranchised. Join with us and be a voice to the voiceless.

Meet Michael

Child Development Participant “When Michael was born, the newborn screening tests determined that he has a rare syndrome which has yet to be identified. He is deaf/mute and they said he would never walk or talk,” shared Michael’s mom, Amelia.

Now navigating this new road of having a special needs child, Amelia turned to the place where she had entrusted her other children, the YWCA Greater Los Angeles Union Pacific Empowerment Center.

Michael began attending the center in 2003 when he was two months old.

“I knew I could turn to them for direction, guidance, and help for Michael,” continued Amelia. “His teachers immediately connected with him and showed dedication to his development.”

Michael responded well to the extra care and attention he received from his teachers. And, at the age of two, Michael shocked everyone by doing something doctors believed impossible - he walked.

At the beginning of 2014, Michael received admittance into an LAUSD Special Needs school. He continues attending the YWCA program part-time.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT

YWCA Greater Los Angeles Child Development has offered infant, toddler and pre-school services since 1976 with developmentally appropriate childcare and a curriculum that enhances a child’s self-esteem, spontaneity, curiosity and self-discipline. The enhancement of the child’s cognitive processes and skills with particular attention to conceptual and communication skills is our primary goal. Child Development uses the High Scope early childhood education approach. This method focuses on the child’s intellectual development thus moving a provider from simply providing childcare to being an important aspect of the child’s development. A parent educational component is included to fully support the child and family unit. This program provides a safe space for parents who are working or pursuing their educational goals.

COMMUNITY NEED

For years, a growing shortage of affordable, quality childcare has plagued the Greater Los Angeles region. YWCA Greater Los Angeles addresses this need by offering an exceptional Child Development program to low income families. Our nurturing learning environment allows children to flourish while empowering parents to continue to work, seek employment, or attend school to improve overall quality of life. YWCA Greater Los Angeles aspires to enrich lives through a holistic family approach to create empowered and educated individuals.

Because of the Financial Literacy programs offered through the Child Development department, parents have joined the ranks of the millions of appropriately “banked” citizens across the country. Various workshops throughout the year focused on topics such as savings, budgeting, and building credit to financially strengthen and prepare their families for the future.

ACTION & IMPACT The goal of the Child Development department is to provide quality early childhood services comprised of age appropriate curriculums to enhance

self-esteem, discipline, and conceptual communication skills.

Using the Desired Results Developmental Profile tool, teachers documented children’s academic progress. The assessment results showed that an overwhelming majority of pre-school children enrolled in the YWCA program demonstrated significant increases in the area of language and literacy development.

Books like “The Big Heart Kids” promote peace, love, and tolerance while encouraging children to take part in discussions about Racial Justice. In-class activities were extended by having children take the book home to share with their family members. All parents received a handout with key points on how to discuss differences and similarities amongst ethnic backgrounds with their children.

During the 2013-2014 fiscal year, the YWCA Greater Los Angeles Infant Learning Center located on the campus of San Fernando High School provided child care services to teen mothers. Of those mothers who were seniors, 16% went to trade school, 41% are attending community college, while the remaining 43% are employed with high school diplomas as a result of free child care services. Teen parents of San Fernando High school have been given the unique opportunity to witness their baby’s milestones with their child nestled on the same campus.

At our six Child Development centers, the community resource box has become a critical tool used to provide resources to parents. Community resources and partnership agencies provided educational parent meetings including Financial Literacy, Health Education, Dental Hygiene, WIC Resources, College Preparedness, and Cultural Awareness. This year, parent involvement and monthly meeting attendance increased by 60%.

Meet Salvador

“When I learned about the YWCA Greater Los Angeles Job Corps it changed my life,” shared Salvador.

“I began studies to become a Clerk Typist and excelled while there. With the help of dedicated staff, I worked hard and continued to grow.”

Upon completion of the program, Salvador was hired by Union Pacific Railroad as a Clerk Typist and moved on from there to Amtrak.

“I know what it’s like to be from a low income family. At Job Corps, I found a path to a bright future and a way to learn a career and become part of society. Success wasn’t handed to me - I had to earn it; but if I could do it, I know others can too. Job Corps saved me and gave me a future.”

YOUTH SERVICES/WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

Job Corps Alumnus Career and college readiness skills are implemented through two premier programs at the YWCA Greater Los Angeles, the Career Training Academy and the Los Angeles Job Corps. These programs combined serve thousands of individuals and provide housing for more than 400 low income students each year.

The Career Training Academy provides an opportunity for women to enter or rejoin the workforce learning skills within an office environment. The Career Training Academy offers workshops to include: professional attire standards, resume building, career search skill building, mock job interviews, career maintenance skill building, and career advancement skill building.

The Los Angeles Job Corps, established in 1964, provides competitive vocational skills training to students ages 16-24 to be contenders in today’s job market. Job Corps services include job placement, full educational scholarships, with no loan to repay, room and board, a fully operational medical and dental facility, counseling services and post-graduation support services. A Chartered High School on site provides students an opportunity to continue their education and obtain a high school diploma or a G.E.D.

COMMUNITY NEED

With competition for well-paying jobs on the rise in the greater Los Angeles area, it is even more crucial that individuals are prepared with appropriate workplace skills. For an individual to stand out in the crowd of applicants not only must they possess employable and educational skills but they also must have strong ‘soft skills’ to move beyond barriers into a successful career.

The other is to assist participants in securing new careers through teaching and training various skills such as computer skills training, resume writing, and interview techniques.

The annual Backpack Giveaway prior to the school year distributed over 50 backpacks filled with school supplies such as binders, dividers, pens, pencils and more. This activity met a direct need as participants shared that their parents could not afford school supplies.

SENIOR ENGAGEMENT

A YWC

Senior Engagement is designed to foster a sense of community, reduce isolation, and promote physical activity and intergenerational learning. We believe in engaging our senior members of the community and learning from their wealth of life experience. Program components include congregate dining which provides nutritional meals as well as a platform for engaging the seniors with one another. Other activities offered are health and wellness workshops, fraud prevention, exercise classes, computer instruction, learning excursions and intergenerational classes.

COMMUNITY NEED

With the second largest elderly population in the country, there is a great need for holistic senior programs in Los Angeles. Seniors in our communities benefit from activities offered by YWCA Greater Los Angeles which focus on three main areas: Social, Education, and Health/Fitness.

ACTION & IMPACT The overall focus of Senior Engagement is to increase socialization and decrease isolation of seniors and assist them in obtaining a healthy lifestyle through recreational, educational and leisure activities.

Educational seminars brought seniors together during the 2013-2014 fiscal year at the YWCA Greater Los Angeles Empowerment Centers as they learned.

One of those seminars was a First Aid presentation that emphasized the importance of proper medical care and practical First Aid tips. Another seminar, “Coping with a Loss” presentation from the department of Mental Health, helped guide seniors through understanding the process of grief.

Seniors participated in cross cultural trips. One trip celebrated the Persian New Year at the Felicia Mahood Senior Center. Seniors enjoyed Persian food, listened and danced to Persian music, and socialized with other members of the YWCA senior program. Listening to Persian music and watching the performances gave seniors from the East Los Angeles area a perspective on the Persian community and an opportunity to meet people from a different ethnic background. Another cross cultural excursion was a trip to Chinatown; there, our seniors were introduced to Chinese culture and beliefs, as well as cuisine.

The Sexual Assault Crisis Services program advocates for survivors who have broken their silence and supports victims who have yet to find their voice. This program seeks to improve the quality of life for those victimized by sexual violence and to provide awareness to prevent the incident of sexual violence. The program works closely with the community as a central resource for improving society’s response to this violent crime.

COMMUNITY NEED

Even though rape and sexual violence are under reported, it is estimated that one in four women have been victimized by sexual violence.

Supportive services offered by the YWCA Greater Los Angeles three rape centers are crucial considering sexual violence trauma interferes with care giving obligations, pursuit of goals and the ability to hold a job while its cumulative effects increase the risk of developing stressrelated illnesses. This stress on mental, physical,

and emotional well-being has been known to lead to and perpetuate poverty. Since these survivors get immediate assistance as a result of the YWCA crisis hotline and the Sexual Assault Response Team, they can resume their daily lives at a significantly faster pace than a survivor who has not received any assistance. Individuals who receive no supportive services tend to suppress the traumatic event impacting them for the rest of their lives.

ACTION & IMPACT The goal of the Sexual Assault Crisis Services program is to provide comprehensive crisis intervention services 24 hours a day to survivors of sexual violence to help them recover from and cope with the traumatic experience.

Responding to the needs of underserved communities being impacted by sexual violence has been the priority of YWCA Greater Los Angeles Sexual Assault Crisis Services during the 2013-2014 fiscal year.

INCREASED POLICE PRESENCE & AREA CHECKS Community education programs have resulted in policy change on school and college campuses. Educational institutions have reported increasing police presence as well as increased area checks of places where sexual violence has taken place.

Increase in the successful prosecution of crimes of sexual violence.

YWCA Greater Los Angeles was actively involved on the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) which brings together law enforcement, victim advocates, and healthcare providers to assist sexual assault victims through the criminal justice process. Response from the SART has resulted in an increase in the successful prosecution of crimes of sexual violence. Because the victim receives care immediately following the assault, evidence has been preserved, circumstances are clearly accounted, and evidence of date rape drugs can be detected quickly resulting in higher incidents of prosecution of assailants of sexual violence.

Counseling Services for individuals and groups is a foundation of services provided by the YWCA Greater Los Angeles. The demand for counseling services is greater than we can provide proving community need. Trained staff provided accompaniment to survivors of sexual violence by advocating for them and providing support at law enforcement agencies, hospitals, and courts.

A “VOICE TO THE VOICELESS”

The 24-hour crisis hotline, which received calls from thousands of sleepless survivors, allowed victims to get the help they needed on the road to overcoming traumatic experiences. The crisis hotline connected individuals to further resources such as counseling. Returning to work for a victim means breaking the link between poverty and sexual violence. Getting victims much-needed help has prevented homelessness and unemployment, maintaining mental health and keeping daily stressors at bay.

Moreno listened to all this with pride and at several points was moved to tears. As Amy shared her story, Moreno was reminded that, in spite of all the pain she sees in her role as director of the YWCA's rape crisis centers, her job is very satisfying. "You've grown so much," she told Amy. "I feel fortunate to meet beautiful people like you. I get to see the beauty of rebirth."

Special thanks to Cedars Sinai for providing funds to help support YWCA Greater Los Angeles Sexual Assault Crisis Services. Federal funding for the YWCA's three rape crisis centers was eliminated in 2010 and demand for services is on the rise. "With funding from Cedars-Sinai and other donors, we are able to see individuals for a longer period of time and help more people," Shelton said. "Counseling is especially critical because individuals who are sexually assaulted and do not receive this kind of help are two to three times more likely to be victimized again.”

For 120 years, the YWCA Greater Los Angeles has served hundreds of thousands of disadvantaged and underserved individuals. What began in 1894 with 300 members operating out of one small location has grown into a robust organization which annually serves thousands of individuals ranging in age through 11 program sites across the region.

Today we are working together toward long-term positive change on a multigenerational level to elevate the quality of life for the community at large. Through a ‘ground up’ approach of local community Empowerment Centers, women and families are getting the help they desperately need in an authentic, community need driven environment.

We remain dedicated to transitioning families toward selfsufficiency and empowerment. Now with a strong downtown Los Angeles physical presence through our celebrated Faye Washington Youth Empowerment Center, which serves as the epicenter of our efforts, we are working to “Shape the Community” in other local pockets throughout the greater Los Angeles area.

YWCA Greater Los Angeles Hosts Groundbreaking Symposium Aimed at Combating Sex Trafficking YWCA Greater Los Angeles, in partnership with Southern and Northern California Legislators, Community Service Providers, Corporations and Survivors hosted a ground-breaking Symposium to explore next steps in combating Domestic Human Sex Trafficking. The symposium was an astounding success thanks to partners and friends who joined in the effort.

The event took place in the Peltz Theater at the Museum of Tolerance and featured expert panel discussions. These efforts provided the platform for the discussion and proposal of innovative solutions to eradicate the crime of sex trafficking and rescuing vulnerable women and children from its terrible grasp.

“For too long, many have been silent on this issue that is greatly affecting communities across our state. The time is now for all of us to join together to plot out real solutions aimed at ending this abhorrent crime,” said Faye Washington, YWCA Greater Los Angeles President and CEO. Top legislators and government officials who participated in the event included Congresswoman Karen Bass, California Attorney General Kamala D. Harris, Los Angeles District Attorney Jackie Lacey, Los Angeles County Supervisors Mark Ridley-Thomas and Don Knabe, California State Assemblymember Isadore Hall, III, California State Senator Holly Mitchell, Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O’Malley, San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis and City of Compton Mayor Aja Brown.

Also featured as a panelist was Lynn Overmann, Senior Advisor to the U.S. Chief Technology Officer in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, who offered an expert view on Federal efforts to develop technologically advanced solutions in combating sex trafficking.

“When we think about what should be done, our response understandably is we want to protect that child, hug her,” said Attorney General Harris, who as a prosecutor once specialized in child sexual assault cases. “But to really do justice, it’s not just about hugging the victims. It’s about prosecuting the offender.”

During the event, one of the nation’s top business moguls and human rights activist, Kathy Ireland, was introduced as the first celebrity Ambassador for the YWCA Greater Los Angeles and she spoke of her passionate support of the YWCA Greater Los Angeles’ effort to combat domestic human sex trafficking.

The symposium concluded with a powerful Call to Action from Ms. Washington. “We need to work toward preventing trafficking, prosecuting offenders, protecting survivors and partnering with civil society, state and local government, the private sector, and faith-based organizations to maximize resources and outcomes,” said Washington.

supervisor Gloria Molina Community Empowerment Center Delivers Much Needed Programs to the Walnut Park Community The Walnut Park neighborhood in Los Angeles buzzed with excitement on Saturday, June 14th, 2014, as stakeholders gathered to celebrate the anticipated Grand Opening of the Gloria Molina Community Empowerment Center. A ribbon cutting ceremony and welcome address by YWCA Greater Los Angeles President and CEO Faye Washington and Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina, kicked off the festivities. Univision’s Primer Impacto correspondent Magaly Ortiz served as emcee.

“YWCA Greater Los Angeles is proud to contribute to the development and enrichment of the Walnut Park community in such a significant manner,” said Ms. Washington. “As Supervisor Molina’s term comes to an end, this facility will be a lasting tribute to her longtime partnership with the YWCA Greater Los Angeles and her legacy of steadfast commitment to the people of this community.”

Joining in the event were Los Angeles County Community Development Commission of the County of Los Angeles, Sean Rogan, Executive Director; Dolores Huerta, Community Activist; Wally Streder, Walnut Park Historian; Joseph Balthazar, President of Walnut Park Resident Association; and Efrain Martinez, President, Walnut Park Chamber of Commerce.

The nearly 14,000 Sq. Ft. building, located at 7515 Pacific Boulevard in Walnut Park, is designed in the California Mission Revival style and integrates traditional design elements such as tile, wrought iron and stone.

The two story childcare and enrichment program facility includes three classrooms on the first level as well as a multi-purpose room, commercial grade kitchen and premium indoor and outdoor play equipment. The second level consists of five classrooms as well as a computer learning center and conference room.

Established through a partnership between the YWCA Greater Los Angeles and the Office of Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina, the Gloria Molina Community Empowerment Center will provide local families with quality child development and care for toddlers and preschoolers by fully licensed professional staff so their parents can continue to work, seek employment, or attend school. Programs at the new facility will also include after school youth enrichment, senior services, healthy living initiatives, and additional programs based on community need.

The celebration included food and live performances from folklorico dance troupes, Walnut Park Elementary children’s choir, face painting and balloon art for children. Tours of the new facility were conducted throughout the day. The Walnut Park Centennial Festival followed the Grand Opening ceremony.

The Walnut Park Empowerment Council of community members began meeting in 2012 to provide guidance and support to the YWCA during the planning and development stages. The council meets on a regular basis to identify resources, contacts and partnerships and provides input regarding programs that would best serve the community of Walnut Park.

rhapsody ball On November 8, 2013 the YWCA of Greater Los Angeles honored Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina, Los Angeles District Attorney Jackie Lacey and Union Bank with its highest public service awards.

The accolades were the highlight of the organization’s annual Rhapsody Ball at the Beverly Hills Hotel, hosted by the Society of Benefactrix, a special donor circle which supports YWCA of Greater Los Angeles programs.

The honorees of the 12th Annual Rhapsody Ball define the compassionate and inspiring achievement to which the YWCA of Greater Los Angeles aspires. Their accomplishments have an energy that demonstrates how rich a life of dedicated service can be.

Supervisor Molina’s constant work to humanize and elevate the status and experience of foster children is cited as a key aspect of the work for which the Soromundi Award honored her. At a time when FBI investigations and arrests of adults making virtual sexual slaves for pedophilic prostitution, the salvation and rehabilitation Supervisor Molina initiated for these most sorely abused youngsters will came into sharp focus during the presentation of this award.

Through her effort to establish equal justice for young people who have never known any slight hint of just treatment, District Attorney Lacey’s Silver Achievement Award symbolized how that first prerequisite of selfworth can be achieved for the hopeless youngsters the prevailing system has used, abused, and abandoned.

Her award pays tribute to her campaign to establish that the law must more aggressively serve the disadvantaged than the powerful, a mission to which she has given her most concerted effort.

District Attorney Lacey’s award was presented by leading lifestyle designer, Kathy Ireland. Phenomenal Woman Awards Luncheon On May 14th, 2014, YWCA Greater Los Angeles honored Marianne Williamson, internationally-acclaimed spiritual author and lecturer, as the 2014 Phenomenal Woman of the Year during the annual Phenomenal Woman Awards Luncheon at the Omni Los Angeles Hotel. During the signature annual fundraising event, her powerful keynote address affirmed that all women have the power within themselves to be phenomenal.

“Abolition, Women’s suffrage, Civil rights...none of these movements were brought about because it was easy, but because it was necessary,” stated Marianne Williamson during her acceptance speech. “We as Phenomenal Women today must recognize that this reality is possible, is imminently feasible, through the grace of God, and create a new movement.”

Ms. Washington shared, “Marianne Williamson’s inspiration of women is demonstrated by the impact of her six New York Times best-seller books, four of which achieved number one. She has spread a philosophy of belief and will-to-win in women around the world.

Tata Vega, featured in the Academy Awardwinning film “20 Feet from Stardom”, wowed the sold-out crowd with her powerful renditions of ‘God is Trying to Tell You Something’ and ‘This is a Man’s World’.

The Phenomenal Woman Awards draws Southern California’s top executives to salute the accomplishments of women leaders in the Los Angeles business community. Xerox Senior Vice President of Southern California and Las Vegas Operations Ian O’Donnell and his team are responsible for leading Xerox’s efforts in Southern California and Las Vegas for Technology Sales and Xerox Document Outsourcing Services and Delivery. His team is responsible for contract negotiations, pricing, marketing, implementation, delivery and ongoing support of the products and Services Xerox brings to their most important customers. Ian joined Xerox in 1984 as a sales representative in California. He has held a variety of sales and leadership positions that have included Director of High End Printing Systems, Director of Xerox Channels Distribution, and Vice President of Sales. In his prior assignment he was the Vice President of Global Services in the High Tech-Telecommunication and Media Industry, responsible for Services Sales and Delivery for Xerox’s largest Global accounts in this vertical segment.

How did you decide to partner with the YWCA Greater Los Angeles?

A previous CFO from Xerox introduced me to Faye Washington at an event where she was the keynote speaker. Before meeting Faye, I was interested in perhaps donating to the YWCA but, that was all.

Typically, there are a lot of rules and regulations wrapped around nonprofits making partnerships challenging. When the idea of partnership was on the table, I was thinking, “How am I going to explain to Faye that this will not work?” Then I met the YWCA team and saw how passionate and dynamic they are. I went from possibly giving financial resources to saying “I’m all in.”

Why does Xerox support the YWCA Greater Los Angeles?

Woven into the fabric of the Xerox organization is a commitment to diversity, sustainability, and community. These qualities align with the YWCA. It is a strategic advantage to partner with an organization that works to build solutions that benefit the local community. We are a global company but, choose to connect with organizations like the YWCA Greater Los Angeles at a local level.

Why does the mission of the YWCA Greater Los Angeles resonate with you?

I was raised helping people who are less fortunate. From an early age, I was taught to embrace an organization’s mission and give my blood sweat and tears to further its work. What impresses me most about the accomplishments of the YWCA is the huge number of people they help get on their feet. Without the YWCA Greater Los Angeles, thousands of people would have entirely different stories.

How would you encourage others to get involved with the YWCA Greater Los Angeles?

One refreshing reality with the YWCA - they did not approach Xerox asking what we could do for them but, rather they asked “What can we do together?” This spirit has made a huge difference. Xerox is invested but, YWCA is invested more. They have dedicated a high caliber of man power and their own organizational finances to this endeavor. This is a joint effort to benefit the community.

Why is the Digital Learning Academy (DLA) needed from the community’s perspective?

DLA teaches cutting edge technology in a field where there are more jobs available than expertise exists. The mission of DLA is to train individuals to get certified in various components of digital printing and place them in the workforce. After matriculating through this academy, individuals will have the necessary tools to lead a productive career in a growing field. When one of these students graduates, they will have top-notch classroom training behind them as well as hands-on experience working in a digital print shop where they have personally taken jobs from beginning to end.

DIGITAL LEARNING ACADEMY

Partnership with Xerox Corporation Establishes Pioneering Digital Learning Academy YWCA Greater Los Angeles and Xerox of Southern California have partnered strategically to offer the YWCA Greater Los Angeles Digital Learning Academy.

This social enterprise venture for YWCA Greater Los Angeles will be located at the Hollywood Studio Club, a building with a rich history that has been operated by the YWCA Greater Los Angeles since 1926. This fully equipped, digital print shop includes the necessary tools to offer an employment path through which students can become digital craftsmen and features customized curriculum based on Xerox’s “School to Career” program.

“Much of the print industry is transitioning to digital printing including sophisticated machines and programs such as 3D printing,” explained Monserrat Ames, Xerox Regional Sales Manager. “This equipment requires training and skilled workers. Xerox is proud to partner with the YWCA Greater Los Angeles to deliver a quality hands-on training experience in an environment that will prepare students to fill the skills gap and have successful careers.”

Xerox installed twelve pieces of equipment and software - including a full-color digital press, 3D printers, a black and white press, booklet maker, trimming equipment, variable data machine, wide-format printer, and more.

Additionally, Xerox worked with an internal team and partnered with a specialized contractor to develop

customized curriculum adding to the current “School to Career” curriculum. This training focuses on the following key components within the digital printing field: Competencies, Learning Plan, Performance Assessment, Learning Activities and Industry Knowledge. More than a classroom, students will get real hands-on experience as the print shop will be fully operational.

“We are proud to take this giant step forward in leading workforce development in the Greater Los Angeles area,” said Faye Washington, YWCA Greater Los Angeles President and CEO. “Thanks to this partnership with Xerox, the YWCA Greater Los Angeles is able jump ahead of the curve in creating innovative opportunities for thousands of individuals in the Los Angeles area.”

“The goal is for students to graduate the program with certification and be able to walk into a company, which operates this type of equipment, skilled enough to get a solid job that will turn into a career,” explains Tasha Carter, YWCA Greater Los Angeles Facilities Manager, who is helping to facilitate the details of this project.

“As society moves forward in technology, we need people who can work the specialized equipment that is being developed. This is an opportunity to improve the local community as a whole and give people skills that employers need.”

Faye Washington Receives Standing Ovation at National Sexual Assault Conference

National Alliance on Mental Illness Urban Los Angeles (NULA), honored Washington, at their 10th Anniversary Luncheon held on July 20, 2013 for her leadership of YWCA Greater Los Angeles and delivering programs that promote healthy minds and empowered lifestyles to the Greater Los Angeles community.

In August 2013, Washington inspired a crowd of over 1,400 participants from across the country as she served as the Keynote Speaker at the National Sexual Assault Conference (NSAC), a national conference offering training for experts in the field of sexual assault.

June 18, 2014 Washington was honored with the inaugural “Re-Inventor Award” by Dwell Media.

Washington was one of three awardees honored as “contributors to the astounding reinvention of Downtown Los Angeles.” The presentation highlighted the YWCA Greater Los Angeles’ work to build a new downtown campus.
