We often find ourselves challenged by so much inequality and injustice, that sometimes it seems insurmountable. hristine Devine is a veteran television news anchor/ reporter/producer at KTTV. She anchors the weeknight newscast at 10pm, Fox 11 News. She has 16 Emmys, including the prestigious Governors Award. In 2012, she was named by Los Angeles Magazine among the "50 Women Changing LA."
Press, Media Volunteer of the Year Award -Volunteers of America, Lifetime Achievement-Chamber of Commerce. National Press Club awards. Active in the community, she has been honored before the LA City Council, LA County Board of Supervisors, by the Los Angeles Police Department and LA County Sheriff's Department.
Christine received two Gracie Awards from American Women in Radio and Television. The first was for a series on Breast Cancer. The second was for a series on infertility.
While Christine has covered elections, the LA Riots, earthquakes and the nation's top news, she is recognized as LA's host of "Wednesday's Child."
Christine is well known as the Wednesday's Child reporter, finding forever families for hundreds of children from foster care. She has been honored by the U.S. Congress as an "Angel in Adoption" and by the Child Welfare League of America. She received the Anna Quindlen Award for philanthropy journalism from the Society of Professional Journalists. Christine is a proud Sun Devil graduate from Arizona State University and was inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Walter Cronkite School of Broadcast Journalism. Christine sits on the Alumni Council and funds a scholarship. In Hollywood, Christine has played a reporter on TV and in film: Melrose Place, 90210, "24", Prison Break, Wag the Dog, Independence Day, Cable Guy, Most Wanted. I
n 2013, Nury Martinez became the second Latina in over 25 years and the only woman elected out of 18 Los Angeles city offices. A neighborhood watch captain, homeowner and mother, Nury is focused on the basics and delivering resources to the Valley. From cleaning our streets and providing safe neighborhoods for our children to ensuring local, middle-class jobs, Nury is dedicated to fighting for the residents of the sixth district. Councilwoman Martinez has dedicated her life to the San Fernando Valley where she was born and raised and was
proud to serve her community on the L.A. Unified School Board from 2009-2013. Today, she relies on her experience in community organizing and her family history to inspire her goals on the Los Angeles City Council. Nury is focused on revitalizing key areas – like the Van Nuys Corridor and Panorama City – with smart economic development plans to attract and retain businesses that create solid middle class jobs. Additionally, she is making the district beautiful and sustainable by working with our industrial businesses in Sun Valley to consider the local community in their operations and using her experience fighting for funds to finish park projects like the 40-acre Cesar Chavez park. In her unique role as the sole elected female member of the Los Angeles City Council, Nury is committed to encouraging and supporting girls and women to take leadership roles and be part of government. She firmly believes that diverse perspectives make good government. And while she is the only elected female voice in City Hall, she is committed to speaking for the women of Los Angeles and takes that responsibility seriously. Nury is a graduate of San Fernando High School and California State University at Northridge. She and her husband Gerry live in Sun Valley with their daughter, Isabelle.

isa Paulsen is president and CEO of the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF), the charitable organization representing the collective philanthropy of the television and film businesses. Serving on EIF’s board of directors, she engages support from the industry’s leadership, including CEOs and other senior executives from the major studios, networks, talent agencies, and guilds. During Paulsen’s tenure, EIF has raised more than $900 million for charitable causes, with a significant portion going to cancer research, awareness, prevention, and treatment programs. In addition, EIF is co-creator of the Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) initiative, through which more than $370 million has been pledged to support
collaborative cancer research. Paulsen has also driven the launch of other EIF programs, including the recently announced Think It Up national education initiative; Hunger Is; iParticipate; and Rise and Honor.

elilah Lanoix is co-owner and president of SMS Transportation Services, Inc., established in 1999. The company provides numerous mobility solutions and services to persons and entities that require alternative transportation services. In addition, the company is one of California’s largest providers of special needs transportation to persons with both developmental and physical disabilities.
The company has contracts with both public and private entities. As an entrepreneur, she is also involved with the development and execution of other successful business endeavors including transportation, development consulting and construction. Prior to SMS, Delilah worked with businesses crafting and developing strategic initiatives to improve overall operations. She has worked with many local elected officials in various areas and is an active participant with several community organizations that promote and support education, training and job growth. In January 2016, she was appointed to the city of Glendale’s Building and Fire Board of Appeals that decide appeals of orders, decisions and determinations made by the Building Official, the Fire Marshal or both, relative to the application and interpretation of the Glendale Building & Safety Code.

hรก Givens has become one of the most powerful speakers of her generation. She has been featured in ESSENCE Magazine and Gospel Today Maga-zine, as well as appeared on a host of television shows and news programs around the country. She is frequently seen discussing the effects of adverse poverty from a global perspective with dignitaries and local citizens world-wide. She is the author of three books, which include: THROUGH THE STORM, I AM WOMAN Walking in God's Divine Purpose, and SEX and the SINGLE CHURCH SISTER: How To Keep Your Dress On When You Want To Take It Off. Givens is also a contributing writer to the Women of Color Devotional Bible and book. She is a playwright who delivers live musical theatre through stage plays such as Through The Storm and The Gift. She is also a licensed min-ister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ at Faithful Central Bible Church in Inglewood, CA.
AIDS Awareness program in Kenya. Her family food programs for the hungry have fed over 1,300 villagers. Her schools have received academic awards from the Kenyan Government for achieving the highest test scores and largest enrollment in its region. In 2008, Givens opened the first I CAN FLY High School. She is currently in the planning phase of launching the BUTTERFLY Project for girls in East Africa. The BUTTERFLY Project offers free education, housing and enrichment activities to girls who seek refuge from child marriage and female mutilation as
Givens is the recipient of several local and interna-tional awards for her efforts to change the plight of women, children and youth facing injustice around the globe. She is the founder of I CAN FLY Interna-tional Inc., which is a non-profit organization based in the United States and Kenya, East Africa. Through the I CAN FLY organization she established two Adult Literacy Schools, two Pre-Schools, and an HIV/ #ywcagla | 21

CREATING ACCESS: FINANCIAL EMPOWERMENT THROUGH SUSTAINABLE CAREERS
The focus of Workforce Development is to provide necessary training and tools to prepare youth for sustainable careers and leadership skills in a competitive job market. professional development YWCA Greater Los Angeles Workforce Development in partnership with the Southbay Workforce Investment Board provided Transitional Subsidized Employment Program (TSE) participants relevant work experience and professional development. Access to mentors encouraged participants to set realistic and achievable short and long term goals. Most participants are fully employed through the YWCA Greater Los Angeles, Los Angeles Job Corps or other business partners. Fortune 500 companies Through a partnership with United Way, the Career Training Academy (CTA) provided access to financial literacy and exposure to Fortune 500 companies. Mock interviews with successful business volunteers from various companies and resume building workshops assisted participants and strengthened professional skills. These opportunities and more resulted in rewarding career exposure, increased confidence and marketability. financial accountability Free tax preparation services were provided in partnership with Korean News Community to assist with teaching financial accountability. Select YWCA Greater Los Angeles program staff members received training to assist individuals during tax preparation season. access to employment The opening of the Digital Learning Academy answered an unmet need in the Los Angeles area by providing training and access to employment in the graphic design and digital printing fields. The Digital Learning Academy features customized curriculum based on Xerox’s “School to Career” program within a fully equipped, digital and 3D print shop.
community service Demonstrating a passion to give back, Los Angeles Job Corps students performed over 4,300 hours of community service throughout the year, regularly working for local organizations such as the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank where they distributed food to needy families in the greater Los Angeles area. Additionally, students volunteered at the 2015 Special Olympics World Games, German Shepherd Rescue, participated in clean-up efforts of the Urban Campus and surrounding areas, Downtown Los Angeles clean-up projects and clean-up efforts on Redondo Beach.

CREATING ACCESS: BUILDING A SOLID FOUNDATION THROUGH EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT
The goal of Child Development is to provide quality early childhood services comprised of age-appropriate curriculum.
child development increased capacity More than 100 additional Child Development openings were provided in the 2014-2015 fiscal year. This increased capacity provided families with more opportunities to achieve educational pursuits and financial stability. Most centers were fully enrolled before the beginning of the new school year and maintained long wait lists. financial empowerment To further promote financial empowerment, 97% of the teen parents from the North Valley Infant Learning Center graduated high school and matriculated to college to provide a better future for their family. Education & Early Childhood Interns During the 2014-2015 fiscal year, through a partnership with East Los Angeles College, Education and Early Childhood interns, bolstered Child Development’s staffing and enriched the educational environment for students and families. Nutrition Education Programs Child Development staff embarked on a series of Nutrition Education programs in collaboration with a program funded by The National Early Care and Education Learning Collaborative (ECELC) and carried out locally by the Choose Health LA Child Care initiative (a program of the Los Angeles County department of Public Health).
Results indicate that the majority of preschool children enrolled in YWCA Greater Los Angeles’ Child Development program score high in critical thinking, cognitive development and language. Using the Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP) and Ages and Stages Questionnaires (ASQ’s) tools, teachers track children’s academic progress.
parenting education Parenting education is included in Child Development to fully support the family unit. Family activities included: the petting zoo, Harvest and Winter Festivals, Friendship Day and Cesar E. Chavez Day, which cultivated communities where children, parents and teachers thrived. In addition, each Child Development site has an active Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) which acts as a liaison between the community and the Center. These committees focused on bringing in needed resources such as dental hygiene, childhood obesity prevention and kindergarten transition information.

CREATING ACCESS: EXPOSURE TO VALUABLE OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH EDUCATION AND LIFE SKILLS One goal of Youth Empowerment is to provide youth participants with engaging, educational activities that promote learning, health and community. stem focus Through a partnership with the East Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce and LifeSail Inc., in June 2015, two teams of youth participants built wooden boats and set sail at Belvedere Lake Park in the East Los Angeles Civic Center. CREATING ACCESS: RECLAIMING ONE’S LIFE THROUGH INTERVENTION AND HEALING The goal of the Sexual Assault Crisis Services program is to provide comprehensive crisis intervention services 24 hours a day to survivors of sexual violence to help them recover from and cope with the traumatic experience. It also responds to the needs of underserved communities being impacted by sexual violence. diversion program The Los Angeles Victim Witness Program recognized YWCA Greater Los Angeles Sexual Assault Crisis Services and their involvement with the Diversion Program. In partnership with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office, the YWCA Greater Los Angeles provides a safe place for interviews of victims of Human Trafficking and acts as liaison on their behalf, ensuring access to multiple life-saving services for victims. National recognition In April 2015, the President’s Commission on the Status of Women California State University Long Beach recognized the YWCA Greater Los Angeles with the 2015 Community Organization Award. teen empowerment group The success and growth of Group counseling through the Teen Empowerment Group was a highlight of the year. This group is a safe place for teens to talk about their experience with sexual violence and connect with other young girls who have been through similar situations. Additionally, the program has expanded to offer more support groups for survivors including a program for males.
clinical internship program The Clinical Internship Program expands our ability to provide services by empowering the next generation of counselors and advocates. Interns assist in facilitating counseling services which provides them with best practices in the fields of counseling and social services. 24-Hour Hotline services More than 30 volunteers were trained and prepared to serve as advocates on behalf of individuals in need of the 24-hour hotline services during the Volunteer Certification Program, which takes place twice a year. The trainings were attended and completed by the largest group of volunteer advocates ever for the organization, providing more access to services for victims throughout Los Angeles. social service round table Sexual Assault Crisis Services is a key partner and host of the Social Service Round Table which meets quarterly. It is designed for social service providers to convene and collaborate; various topics were highlighted to help educate participants on sexual violence and ways organizations can work together to create more access and healing for victims.
it is estimated that 1 in 3 Women have been victimized by sexual violence Supportive services offered by the YWCA Greater Los Angeles are crucial since sexual violence trauma interferes with the pursuit of one’s goals, caregiving obligations and the ability to maintain a job. The cumulative effects of trauma increase the risk of developing stress-related illnesses; this stress on mental, physical, and emotional well-being has been known to lead to and perpetuate poverty. Individuals who do not receive supportive services tend to suppress the traumatic event impacting them for the rest of their lives.

With over one million seniors in Los Angeles County, there is a great need for relevant senior services and programs in our local communities. Seniors benefit from activities offered by YWCA Greater Los Angeles which focus on three main areas: Social, Education and Health/Fitness.

CREATING ACCESS: FOSTERING SOCIALIZATION AND HEALTHY LIFESTYLES The overall focus of Senior Empowerment is to increase socialization, decrease isolation and assist seniors in living a healthy lifestyle through recreational, educational and leisure activities. life-enriching services Senior Engagement was expanded at the Supervisor Gloria Molina Community Empowerment Center. Programming included life-enriching services such as affordable meals, educational trips and social activities.
educational seminars Educational Seminars impacted the lives of seniors through a partnership with the Department of Mental Health. Participants benefited from workshops focused on bereavement and caregiving.
education and access Computer training, offered in English and Spanish, promoted education and access to technology for seniors. They were also introduced to new computer software and applications. Participants developed projects on current events and cultural topics, and expressed they were no longer intimidated or nervous to use a computer.
seniors volunteer Through the Jumpstart Program, seniors volunteered numerous hours at the YWCA Greater Los Angeles Child Development sites to work with children. Whether reading stories, playing with children or assisting teachers and aids in daily classroom activities, this intergenerational program enriched numerous lives and created lasting impact on all participants.
fraud prevention course Educational classes such as ESL and Fraud Prevention were widely attended by seniors across centers. In May 2015, Senior Engagement was honored with a certificate from the Los Angeles Unified School District for its fraud prevention course.

The goal of the program is to reduce hunger and food insecurity, and promote health and well-being of older adults by improving access to nutritious meals and other health services. A diverse menu was provided while ensuring each meal contains 1/3 of the recommended daily allowance of nutrients for seniors.
