MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR A BETTER FUTURE
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT/CEO At CDI, we believe that every child deserves the chance to grow, thrive and bring their unique innate gift to the world. However, the most vulnerable children in our communities, those who have developmental challenges and/or face risks from adverse life circumstances, are often the most abandoned -- left without the crucial opportunities needed to reach their fullest potential. With your help, we are shifting that bleak picture. Through our shared values and commitments we are making a difference for a better future for all of our children. Your invaluable partnership gives us reason for hope and celebration as we work together to find creative solutions to ensure that each and every child will be safe, feel loved and have the opportunities they need to flourish in school, at home, and throughout their lifetime. CDI’s programs encompass a broad range of support, from promotion, prevention and intensive early interventions, to building the workforce that optimally support children and families. Our Early Intervention Services provide comprehensive care that focuses on the entire family so that the needs of the family can be balanced. We believe that this all-inclusive approach creates multiple systems of support which strengthens families and positions them for greater success.
CDI’s Early Learning Center (ELC) provides a nurturing environment where our community partners collaborate to bring important resources to families including developmental screening and play and learn activities --which foster opportunities to organically make friends, share wisdom and engage in open dialogue about issues concerning child development. We celebrate the valor and diversity we see in families, and we learn from them what matters most and what is truly beneficial in raising their children. As we prepare to expand our footprint in the San Fernando Valley, by opening a new site (housed in a former 1950’s church) in Reseda, one that will become home to CDI headquarters and include an Early Learning Center, CDI Early Intervention Programs, child care, a community conference and innovative learning center for not-for-profit collaboration. We ask for you to accompany us as we stretch and embrace our neighboring communities. We are calling out to our community members to join us in focusing our priorities around families and raising children. We all need to get involved and participate in critical conversations about the health and wellbeing of each child. We can all become champions for a brighter future for our kids, and our communities. Warmest regards, Joan Maltese, Ph.D.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR A BETTER FUTURE
LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR At the Child Development Institute our goal is to make life better, healthier and happier for as many people as possible. Our staff is dedicated to providing the best resources for each child and family that comes through our doors. We honor and celebrate the families who are committed to strengthening their child’s development by courageously seeking the greatest environments needed to improve their child’s wellbeing. Together we work as a team to bring positive change into the lives of so many youngsters. We create a community that is fostered by nourishing relationships that aim to bridge a brighter future for the families we serve. Being on the Board of the Child Development Institute for so many years, and now as Chair, has made me aware of how fragile life is. As an educator for nearly four decades, I dedicate myself to supporting all the objectives of the Child Development Institute and I graciously ask you to join me. Gloria Pollack Child Development Institute Board Chair

OUR PHILOSOPHY
Therapists use an integrated “whole child” approach guided by research in child development, brain science, attachment and learning theory. Treatment is individualized for each child and family. Families are the most important providers of loving, caring relationships and the best creators of safe, nurturing environments that support healthy development. Parents are active participants and collaborators in their child’s treatment.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR A BETTER FUTURE
OUR HISTORY The Child Development Institute was founded in 1995 by Joan Maltese, PhD and a small group of mental health professionals. CDI’s aim was to address the lack of holistic early childhood development and intervention services available in the San Fernando Valley. When such services were available at all they were provided in isolation, with little attention to a child’s overall support system (family, caregivers and teachers). Services were not integrating the child and family’s emotional well being
and were primarily focused on deficits. CDI professionals began training in Stanley Greenspan’s DIR/Floortime model which integrates child development with mental health to support a holistic approach to the successful developmental growth of the whole being. CDI thoughtfully designed and implemented a relationship based intervention program incorporating professionals from various fields of expertise to provide meaningful and effective services to children and their families.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR A BETTER FUTURE
CDI LEADERSHIP CDI has made great progress in securing long-term community agreements with our anchor partners, Providence Tarzana Medical Center, Child Care Resource Center (CCRC) and California State University, Northridge (CSUN). For example, CDI is collaborating with Providence Tarzana Medical Center to offer promotion/ prevention programs and early intervention services on the hospital campus so that families with newborns and young children can receive immediate and on-going support to address concerns right from the start; CDI is planning to co-locate with CCRC in Reseda to offer full continuum of child care, early intervention, and mental health services; and finally, CDI is 9
now a CSUN affiliate and working with several departments on campus to place over 100 service learning students at our Early Learning Center (ELC) in Canoga Park. CDI is gearing up to expand services and replicate the full continuum model that we initiated in Canoga Park with the opening of the ELC in 2012. Part of our maturing as a community benefit organization and as a community partner is recognizing the importance of engaging, listening, and learning from all members of the community. As we look ahead to 2017, we will be building upon the growth and solid relationships with our community partners and welcoming many newcomers. Community collaboration through all stages of planning will ultimately allow us to grow stronger together. With this in mind, we are facilitating a new community collaborative to create a responsive community network with resources and services to enhance the health and wellbeing of all children in the west valley, especially those in underserved communities. Recognizing the many changes ahead at CDI, we never forget the most important focus of our work - relationships are essential – for children to grow and learn, for grown-ups to feel safe and equipped to care for their families, and for community partners to work together for the health and wellbeing of all of us.
“The staff is absolutely amazing. The therapists care and deliver results.”

Occupational Therapy & Sensory Integration

CDI occupational therapists specialize in the development of skills to support daily occupations, which include gross and fine motor skills, sensory processing, feeding, self-help, regulation, engagement and play.
CDI mental health therapists are licensed marriage and family therapists, as well as experienced mental health interns working towards licensure, that work with families to provide services that will benefit every child’s development and growth and every family’s well-being.
O UR SERVICES
Physical Therapy Treatment includes facilitating improved trunk control, balance, coordination, muscular endurance and strength, stretching activities, cognitive stimulation and sensory integration. A primary focus of intervention is strengthening the underlying skills needed to perform gross motor activities. Additionally, the physical therapist will work with the child’s caregivers to adapt interactions and the environment in order to encourage skill development.
Therapeutic Groups Each group, of no more than six, focuses on a specific domain; social skills, motor skills, speech and communication, adaptive community skills, sensory or mental health. Groups are staffed in a way to support each child’s individual needs and encourage children’s active involvement in group activities. Groups offer a unique opportunity for children to learn and practice skills in a social setting with peers, while having the support of trained professionals.
Feeding Therapy Feeding therapy is facilitating the activities of feeding, eating, and swallowing safely; ensuring appropriate set up, equipment, and instruction for the child and relevant others to meet identified nutritional guidelines; ensuring adequate performance of the components of the oral, pharyngeal and esophageal phases of swallowing; and holistically addressing the physical, psychosocial, and cultural factors associated with feeding, eating, and swallowing.
Developmental Support Services CDI’s developmental support services help children with developmental challenges or delays learn the skills needed to successfully participate in family and community activities. CDI’s developmental support services use specific therapeutic interventions to help integrate all domains of development in a holistic, family centered manner.
ADMIN SUPPORT: CDI has an amazing team of individuals who provide crucial administrative support to our organization and staff. This team collectively helps with the day-to-day operations of CDI and ensures that our families and their children are taken care of from start to finish.

BLOCK PARTY CELEBRATION
BLOCK PARTY CELEBRATION
BACK TO SCHOOL HEALTH & SAFETY FAIR
Community Partnerships The Child Development Institute held their Annual Block Party Celebration on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at CBS Studio Center, located in Studio City. CDI’s Annual Block Party celebrates our work in supporting children and strengthening families through early learning and early intervention services. But more importantly, it is an occasion and an opportunity to thank the generous community partnerships and individuals who make it all possible. CDI families, community partners and friends came to join in the celebration. It was a festive Motown themed “Dancing in the Street” block party with a record breaking 250 people in attendance! Louis Price, a lead singer for the Temptations and The Drifters provided the entertainment along with live auction items, a photo booth, roving fortune teller and magician to add to the festivities.
The Power of Partnership The Child Development Institute (CDI) hosted their Annual Back to School Health and Safety Fair on Saturday, August 26, 2017 at CDI’s Early Learning Center, in Canoga Park. This event was shared by over 25 community partners and was a true testament to the power of partnership! With the generous support of local organizations housed throughout the San Fernando Valley free services, activities, and health screenings were provided to school-aged children and their families.
Since 1995, CDI’s Heart of Gold Award has been awarded to exemplary individuals who are dedicated to ensuring that young children and families have the resources they need to grow up healthy in our community. This year, in honor of their lifelong commitments, leadership, and professional achievements we honored Arlene and Lee Alpert as our 2017 “Sweetheart” Heart of Gold Honorees. Arlene and Lee have been champions devoted to the advocacy and rights of families and children within our community for decades.
CDI’s ELC puts on this community event each year to provide free services and activities to school-aged children and their families. Children are able to get oral, developmental, vision, hearing, and other screenings, at no cost. Our goal is to help families who might not have the resources, to prepare their children for another healthy and successful school year. It is also a great opportunity for families to learn about the extensive resources we have right here in our own community!
