CDI’s mission is to help all children reach their full potential by supporting the relationships and environments that shape early development. For nearly 25 years, Child Development Institute has served as one of the principle providers of relationship-based early intervention and therapeutic services to children and their families. CDI is also a leading resource on early childhood development and provides professional trainings to schools, teachers, and professional organizations.

FROM THE PRESIDENT/CEO: TIPPING THE SCALES FOR VULNERABLE BABIES CDI is so excited to celebrate our new baby clinic in partnership with our long-time partner, Providence Tarzana Medical Center (PTMC). It comes at a time when both organizations are expanding and improving their services to make our community stronger and more resilient. PTMC is building a new hospital that “reimagines” community health. This image brings critical partnerships and medical specialists to our community, providing broader and deeper levels of care to our citizens. CDI has opened a welcoming new CDI PTMC Child Development Center on the PTMC campus with a special VIP (Vulnerable Infants and Parents) program that will provide specialized care and family support for the tiniest babies born at Providence. Our care model provides inhome, clinic and community resources that will ensure these fragile babies will get off to a good start – even with multiple risk factors and adversity from inception. At CDI, we believe that every baby deserves the best start in life. But sadly, too many children have the deck stacked
against them. Before they even go home, the scales are tipping on the side of adverse circumstances – medically and genetically. Too often, these circumstances are met with a multitude of social and economic burdens - low income, food insecurity, homelessness and tragically, even neglect and abuse. We are celebrating our dedicated partnership, staff and position that will address the unique circumstances for our vulnerable infants and parents, and we ask you to join us in tipping the scales for positive change. Together, we can make a profound impact on future generations. With your help we can change the life path for our most vulnerable children. We can provide support to the entire family, specialized services for infant and programs that protect and strengthen families by helping them find the right resources and build the core capacities that will enable their children to thrive.

FROM THE BOARD CHAIR At the Child Development Institute, we believe in putting children first. Our dedicated staff, volunteers and board members work daily to ensure that underserved families are given the support and services they need --right from the start. We understand the importance of the early years and have built our mission to promote the health and development of children in our community. This year, we come together for the benefit of our smallest citizens to make a real difference. As a long-time educator and devoted community leader I have witnessed the positive impact that early care and education can have upon a child, a family and a
community. With the opening of our newest Center we can transform the lives of our most vulnerable families and help babies that are too often forgotten. Together, we can give them a healthy and bright beginning. As the Board Chair, I remain grateful to all the key partners, community members and leading professionals that have made this moment possible. This is a special time in our organization’s history and I am thrilled to be part of this journey. I hope that you will join our campaign to give every child the best start in life!

OUR PHILOSOPHY
Therapists use an integrated “whole child” approach guided by research in child development, brain science, attachment and learning theory. Treatment is individualized for each child and family. Families are the most important providers of loving, caring relationships and the best creators of safe, nurturing environments that support healthy development. Parents are active participants and collaborators in their child’s treatment.

CDI PTMC CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER OPENS IN TARZANA
Child Development Institute (CDI) has partnered with Providence Tarzana Medical Center (PTMC) to create a new pediatric development center on the PTMC campus. This Center
Child Development Institute partnered with Providence Tarzana Medical Center (PTMC) to create a new pediatric development center on the PTMC campus located in Tarzana. CDI opened its doors September 2018, to the 4,200-square foot space, located on the ground floor of the Tarzana Garden Plaza at the west end of the PTMC campus. The CDI PTMC Child Development Center offers its full slate of early intervention services to infants and young children in our community. A special Vulnerable Infants & Parents Program (VIP) for the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) provides support and services that are crucial to neonatal babies and their families as they transition from in-patient to home. Additionally, this new Center includes specialized equipment for physical, occupational and feeding therapies and mental health support for parents and families among other services. We would like to extend our gratitude to the California Community Foundation, Green Foundation, Mother Joseph Fund, Nonprofit Sustainability Initiative and the Office of Supervisor Sheila Kuehl for their vital support of the CDI PTMC Child Development Center.

“It has been an exciting year of growth for CDI. We opened our second clinic on the campus of Providence Tarzana Hospital and have begun working closely with the specialists in the hospital. We are looking forward to reaching more infants, young children and families in our community who need valuable services and resources. We have begun offering specialized services for babies who are graduating from NICUs as well as prenatal support groups and other exciting programs. The Vulnerable Infants & Parents (VIP) Program is one of many new programs that intervenes during a critical window of opportunity—thus having lifelong consequences for the promise of healthier babies and stronger, more resilient families. For nearly 25 years, Child Development Institute’s professional team of therapists and development specialists have provided cutting-edge, evidence-based services to children with diverse needs. The Center provides an innovative approach to delivering specialized services for NICU infants and children who are often missed in the traditional follow-up clinics. Developing this close, but separate site, helps all members of the family feel safer and included in the important first stages of home life for medically and emotionally fragile families and children.

CDI EARLY LEARNING CENTERS Located in Canoga Park and coming soon in Reseda, the ELC is a free museum quality developmentally-appropriate play and learning space. The CDI Early Learning Center promotes healthy development for all young children and provides connection to community resources and opportunities to strengthen families. The ELC’s play and activity spaces promote self-discovery and invite hands-on learning experiences with problem-solving, and sensory exploration. Young children and their families have access to an indoor climbing tree, healthy snack room, teaching kitchen, and outdoor gardens and playground with special adaptive equipment. Throughout, parents interact with early child development professionals and volunteers who can answer their questions about child development and make connections with other community providers.

EARLY LEARNING CENTER IN RESEDA Given our success in Canoga Park, CDI is transforming a mid-century former church in Reseda into another dynamic early learning center. With over 80% raised toward the total costs, contributions to this effort will fund creating spaces that support development through literacy, art, science, music, gardening, and health and wellness activities. This will include a Children’s Discovery Zone, adaptive playground, indoor climbing tree, healthy snack room, classroom kitchen, community garden and theater. These interactive environments allow children to learn while broadening their imaginations through play as they begin to develop the skills and discover the world around them. We anticipate 5,000 children (0-5 years) and their family members will play and learn at the CDI ELC in Reseda annually. CDI is incredibly thankful for the generous funding support received

A Day of Volunteerism at the Early Learning Center!
Let Love Grow with Valley Care Community Consortium (VCC) – February 22, 2019 Thank you to the Valley Care Community Consortium! This energetic team volunteered at the ELC for a day of volunteerism. They sanded and revarnished our outdoor harp and re-soiled the raised garden beds to ensure that our Let Love Grow event was a huge success. Our ELC children and families are so thankful for their support. 12
Armanino Service Day at the CDI Early Learning Center – May 23, 2019 We are so grateful for the Armanino team! California’s largest independent audit consulting and business management firm spent the day at the ELC for a day of service known as The Great Give. There was no task too big or small for this dynamic team, they led a spirited day of volunteerism with all smiles.
The CDI Early Learning Center in Canoga Park has fostered countless supportive intercultural and inter-generational relationships totaling over 23,000 visits each year.

In a coordinated effort with CSUN’s Champions for Change initiative, CDI distributes locally sourced fruits and vegetables to hundreds of families. The ELC hosts this free community event every fourth Friday of the month at our Early Learning Center in Canoga Park.
CDI Annual Back-to-School Health & Safety Fair
Heart-Mind Family Dance Celebration at the ELC
CDI hosted the Annual Back to School Health and Safety Fair on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at CDI’s Early Learning Center in Canoga Park. This event was shared by over 40 community partners and was a true testament to the power of partnership! The Fair’s core goal is to assist families who might not have the resources to prepare their children for a healthy and successful school year. With the generous support of elected officials and local organizations housed throughout the San Fernando Valley—free health screenings, activities, and services were provided to preschool school-aged children and their families.
CDI’s Heart-Mind Family Dance Celebration held on June 11, 2019, featured a variety of activities for children and families to participate throughout the day which focused on the importance of mental health awareness. Activities included crafts on “How Do I Feel Today?”, Storytime with Fiona (the Therapy Dog), a HeartMind Dance Party and Celebration, outdoor gardening activities and learning about healthy eating and wellness. Thank you CalMHSA (California Mental Health Services Authority) for supporting this mental health awareness event.

Child Development Institute’s Annual Block Party Celebration brings together influential local leaders, professionals, and community members to celebrate CDI’s work in supporting children and strengthening families to succeed through early learning and early intervention services. The Flamenco-inspired, fiesta celebration was held on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at CBS Studios in Studio City. Our partners and supporters enjoyed the tastes and sounds of the flames of Spain, with a lively show featuring Nocy Karkour, a sensational world guitarist and Flamenco stylist. We were honored to award our 2019 CDI Heart of Gold Award Recipients for their unwavering partnership and tireless commitment to our most vulnerable infants!
