LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT/CEO CDI is committed to supporting children’s growth and development, especially for those who face biological and/or environmental challenges. We recognize that all parents have dreams and for their children, even when facing developmental issues. CDI therapists learn about each child and family while discovering the best support methods and resources. Not a quick fix, it is appreciating small steps that lead to big gains. This approach also applies to CDI’s organizational development. We don’t expect things to come easily, and we benefit from the support and experience of others. In the past few years we have learned and planned as we move to reach more families – especially those most in need at the earliest stages of development when the impact is greatest. September 2018, after years of planning, we opened our VIP Clinic on the Providence Tarzana Campus. The CDI/ Providence Task group lead by Dale Surowitz, Dr. Howie Reinstein, Lee Alpert and community leaders provided their generosity, wisdom and determination which helped us overcome many challenges and setbacks. Our bringing early intervention services to premature, low birth weight, or medically fragile babies is now a reality. When CDI opened the Early Learning Center in Canoga Park, the Board of Directors believed that this community based and lead model should be replicated in other underserved areas. Reseda was chosen based on need and community interest. The Reseda campus at Vanowen Street and Lindley Avenue is undergoing renovation and will be used for community outreach events throughout 2019, with a grand opening in 2020. We anticipate doubling our mission reach which is currently over 500 children in intensive therapies and over 5,000 individual children annually visiting the ELC with their families – most visiting multiple times weekly.
Key to the new ELC Reseda Campus success has been Gelb Enterprises’ guiding leadership and support. Also, the committed students and faculty under the direction of David Boyns from CSUN’s Institute for Community Health and Wellbeing insure outstanding programs and support for children and families visiting the Canoga Park ELC. We have received dedicated commitment from our stakeholders, especially from elected officials such as our strong supporter Councilmember Bob Blumenfield. Many teams and individuals have worked alongside these leaders to further CDI’s mission. The perseverance of the Board of Directors, with Gloria Pollack and Scott Silverstein at the helm along with CDI Program Directors and talented staff, has enabled CDI to overcome obstacles we’ve faced to expand our mission and reach more children and families. We have grown more resilient and resolved to pursue our dreams. With our community partners we will continue to expand our support to the children and families. CDI’s growth, like a child’s, didn’t occur overnight or without doubts and fears. With the help of our partners we took risks and persisted. Because of that resolve, we have new centers and programs, and CDI is more resilient, connected to community and positioned sustain future growth. Thank you. Warmest regards,

Located in Canoga Park and coming soon in Reseda, the ELC is a museumquality, developmentally-appropriate play and learning space. CDI Early Learning Center promotes healthy development for all young children and provides connection to community resources and opportunities to strengthen families.

CDI to Open Early Learning Center in Reseda, January 2020 CDI and its partners are coming together to replicate the success of the CDI Early Learning Center in Canoga Park, in another high-need area of the San Fernando Valley – Reseda. The new Center’s play and activity-learning spaces will be designed to promote self-discovery and invite hands-on learning experiences with nature, problem-solving, and sensory exploration. Young children and their families will have access to an indoor climbing tree, community dining room, teaching kitchen, and outdoor gardens and playground with special adaptive equipment. Throughout, parents will interact with early child development professionals and volunteers who can answer their questions about child development and make connections with other community providers. We are pleased by the progress and developments of this multi-million dollar capital campaign project, and have received tremendous support from CDI Board Members, community partners and major foundations. The new Early Learning Center is undergoing renovation in 2018-2019 and is aiming to open in January 2020.
THE NEW CDI PTMC CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER IN TARZANA
CDI Partners with Providence Tarzana Medical Center to Offer Intervention Services to Infants and Young Children Child Development Institute (CDI) has partnered with Providence Tarzana Medical Center (PTMC) to create a new child development center on the PTMC campus. At the Center, CDI will offer its full slate of early intervention services to infants and young children in our community. A special Vulnerable Infants Program (VIP) for neonatal and pediatric intensive care unit (NICU/PICU) patients will provide support and services that are crucial to neonatal babies and their families as they transition from in-patient to home.

Beginning in August 2018, CDI will open its doors to the 4,200-square foot space, located on the ground floor of the Tarzana Garden Plaza at the west end of the PTMC campus. This new Center includes specialized

12-Year-Old Collects 1,200 Books to Donate to the ELC Library in Canoga Park After 12-year-old Connor visited the ELC with his mother earlier this year, he noticed that the book shelf looked bare. “At first Connor wanted to buy the books for the children, but quickly realized the benefit in involving others,” shared his mother, Patty. Full of excitement, Connor rallied up his 6th grade class and devised a book drive at his school. From the inception of the book drive in February 2018, Connor spent nearly two months arranging and organizing the book drive and collected nearly 1,200 books in a span of four days. On June 7, 2018, Connor presented 1,200 books to CDI Early Learning Center. “After you help people, you feel accomplished and you want to help more people,” shared Connor. “I can see how one person can truly make a difference. I know how much books meant to me as a kid, and I wanted to share that experience of having books with other kids.”

Celebrating CDI’s committment to families On Thursday, March 15th, 2018, CDI’s Board of Directors hosted the first event of the New Year with record-breaking attendance and celebrated with our beloved community partners and supporters. Guests enjoyed the Irish Saint Patrick’s Day theme with signature martinis, and sounds inspired by Frank Sinatra. The festive event presented a forum to learn more about CDI’s newest developments and provided an occasion to connect with individuals who are enriching our community. Child Development Institute’s (CDI) Martini Madness brings together leading professionals, local leaders, and community members to honor CDI’s commitment in supporting children and strengthening families to succeed through early learning and early intervention services.
On Tuesday, April 24th, 2018, the Child Development Institute’s leadership team met with our distinct Founders for an afternoon of fellowship and celebration. CDI remains deeply encouraged by the invaluable dedication of our Founders and looks forward to incorporating this new annual tradition.
