order to ensure employee and guest safety. The Manager on Duty (MOD) or Security Supervisor will assume command and will notify all staff and volunteers on duty. 1. If lightning is in the vicinity, the following procedures are recommended: a. Within 30 miles of the venue- designated staff members are stationed to direct patrons to the proper shelters. b. Within 20 miles of the venue- an evacuation of the outdoor areas will begin if it appears the thunderstorm is moving toward the gardens. A 30-minute lead time or more should be considered for an evacuation. c. Within 8 miles of the venue- An Event Delay is implemented. Event officials suspend activities 2. In the event of a "Severe Weather Alert", Security, and Guest Services Staff will perform rounds of the garden using foot patrol, vehicles, and/or public address systems. 3. Message to be communicated: “Thank you for enjoying the gardens…there is an approaching dangerous thunderstorm, and we are notifying guests to seek shelter for your safety. Please go to the nearest shelter area until 30 minutes after the last sign of lightning or thunder. Thank you for your cooperation.”

Safe Shelter Areas

The nearest safe shelter site shall be sought when an event occurs: no place is safe outside if lightning is in the vicinity. Partially enclosed vending areas and picnic shelters are not safe. 1. Horticulture Building (Offline until Longwood Reimagined is completed.) 5. Lower Reception Suite (Offline until Longwood Reimagined is completed.) 6. Facilities Building 7. Main Conservatory 8. Peirce-du Pont Garage (B2) and Peirce du-Pont House. Interior rooms only. 9. Pump House Museum 10. Production and Research Facility Headhouse Area 11. Terrace Restaurant Lower Level 12. Visitor Center (Except Gardens Shop Greenhouse) 13. Webb Farmhouse

DRIVING LONGWOOD VEHICLES

Certain volunteer assignments may require the operation of a Longwood Gardens vehicle. Supervisors should contact the Director of Volunteer Engagement to request authorization for a volunteer to operate a Longwood Gardens-owned or leased vehicle. Insurance regulations require the following clearances for staff or volunteers who will drive Longwood vehicles: • Motor vehicle report • Criminal background check • Drug test Safety training, specific to vehicle type, will be provided at the department level.
