Highlights from Our Gardens All Aboard Our Garden Railway (1) Our Garden Railway opens October 1, and features a whimsical display set into motion with G-scale model trains.

This will be the 12th year the railway has delighted kids from ages 1 to 92 with custom trains traveling in and out of bridges, tunnels, and special water features. Five locomotives rumble through the display at once with more than 45 different engines during the season. The track encompassing 450 feet, twists and winds through eight bridges and tunnels; the largest signature bridge is 17 feet long and 12 feet high. Make sure our littlest conductors enjoy the special section installed at their eye level!

Garden Railway Opens October 1 This model train display operates during regular Gardens hours, weather permitting, through January 6, 2013.

Homegrown Mums (2) Did you know that all of the mums you see trained into spirals, arches, and shields during our Chrysanthemum Festival are grown right here at Longwood Gardens.

We grow all 13 classes of chrysanthemums to exhibition quality —these are not your average mums.

Our mums are grown through cuttings or tissue cultures, taking a small amount of plant material and developing it in special growing conditions so that we can quickly multiply a mum stock to make large quantities of plants. In order to supply the thousands of mums that fill the Conservatory each year, mums are grown in the Mum Field and Nursery, located across Route 1, as well as in the Estate Houses, the greenhouses

connected to the Conservatory. Our expert mum growers fill these spaces with all of the extraordinary shapes that grace our Conservatory each November. This year for the first time Longwood is also using these spaces to create and trial bonsai mums.

Falling for the Cascade Mum (3) The cascade mum is unique for its growth rate, which allows individual cascading stems to grow up to an incredible eight feet in a season! This characteristic inspired mum growers in Asia to mimic cascading shapes found in nature. Thirty years ago we introduced these mums into its spectacular collection and have since developed a “Longwoodized” adaptation of the Asian style by growing the mums at a dramatic angle down wire frames. Our mum Senior Gardener grows over 1,000 cascade mums every year, all by hand, using over 20 miles of wire to train the mums into shapes. The mums are started 15 months in advance to be ready for each Festival. This past July cuttings were taken to prepare for our 2013 show. This year the cascade mums will be constructed into a new 7-foot high ‘Tall Cloud’ form on the floor of the Exhibition Hall. Another cascade mum attraction will be the 13-foot arches on the Patio of Oranges that guests can mingle and move about beneath.

Soil to Sky (4) At Longwood, we take a holistic approach to sustainability that we term “soil to sky.” We care for our existing high-quality landscapes and restore others by promoting biodiversity and encouraging a robust web of life on our property. For us, sustainability means a true and balanced collaboration of nature and

culture. An area our Land Stewardship team focuses on throughout the autumn season is the wetlands on our Abbondi property, west of the main Gardens. These wetlands were built in the early 1990s with assistance from the US Fish and Wildlife Service’s Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program.

About 90% of our native animals rely on wetlands like these throughout the year as part of their lifecycle. Two old farm ponds were converted to a larger wetland by constructing a berm and water control structure that allows us to vary the depth of the water throughout the year. As the weather gets cooler, many species of shorebirds, ducks, and geese use this wetland on their annual migration when heading south for the winter.

Transforming the Tropical Terrace (5) Though today the Tropical Terrace seems like a permanent fixture of the Gardens, its original incarnation was the Hibiscus House, constructed in 1919. However, an awkward flow of pedestrian traffic and a desire to connect the Rose and Banana Houses demanded a reimagining of the space. Today’s Tropical Terrace was installed in 1957–58 under the designs of Wilmington’s Victorine and Samuel Homsey, Inc. Not intended to reference a single geographic location, the house displays an amalgam of tropical flavors through equally diverse media, from vines and ground covers to small trees and ornamental shrubs. Ever evolving, this year saw the removal of the false epiphyte tree in favor of some very exciting plant material; favorites include the palm Rhapis multifida– a new species for the Gardens–and the Longwood-trialed Alocasia ‘Nile High’. Showcasing these additions is a rock wall artfully crafted by our own masons.

Planning for the Trials Conference (6) We are prepping for the second ever International Trials Conference in September 2013. The conference will be in conjunction with the unveiling of a new trial garden located within the Idea Garden. What can you expect at the conference? Professionals that conduct and use information developed from plant trials will converge, focusing on current research and important aspects of trialing annual, perennial, and woody plants. Trials aren’t anything new to us as our plant trials began in 1960, and our research in this field continues to guide us today. Our first named release in 1965 was a wintercreeper Euonymus plant, Euonymus fortunei ‘Longwood’. A small team of Research Specialists conducts our indoor and outdoor plant trials year-round in the research greenhouses and at the research nursery. We’ve had many successful trials which lead to named releases including Camellia releases ‘Longwood Valentine’ and ‘Longwood Centennial’; Ilex releases ‘Longwood Gold’ and ‘Longwood Gardens’; Clivia releases ‘Longwood Debutante’ and ‘Longwood Fireworks’; and many more.

Landscape & Design Lecture: Led by the Land featuring Kim Wilkie Monday, October 29 Led by the Land explores the relationship between land, water and life; a subtle cohabitation that creates landscapes. Author and designer of Longwood Gardens’ East Conservatory Plaza, Kim Wilkie, will speak about his philosophy of land and human settlement, illustrating the ideas with examples of his work. Kim will show how ancient traditions of sculpting the land can inspire new forms and meanings at the same time as creating habitats for wildlife and spaces for theatre.

Olivier Latry is the titular organist of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris.

A Longwood Christmas November 22, 2012–January 6, 2013 We’ll put the stars in your eyes this holiday season as you wander through half a million twinkling lights, thousands of poinsettias, and magnificent Christmas trees.

Beautifully lit fountains dance in our starry holiday wonderland, and concerts are presented daily.
