Turn on your left and right brain during SmART Nights. Hear some of the region’s brightest minds explore the science of light, then share your own bright ideas at our StorySlams facilitated by First Person Arts. Each night’s theme will elicit stories that come from our audience—so bring your best or just come to listen!

Highlights from Our Gardens Big Waterlilies, Big Numbers

The Buzz About our Beehives

(1) Slated to open any day, our Waterlily Display boasts some impressive facts and figures! In our Courtyard sit six glistening pools that hold over 160,000 gallons of water.

Every year we grow seven large water-platters for our display comprised of Victoria cruziana, Victoria amazonica and a hybrid between these called Victoria ‘Longwood Hybrid’, which was first developed by Longwood Gardens in 1960. At peak season (mid-July through early September), each plant can have as many as eight leaves that can grow up to five feet in diameter in just three weeks’ time! And these leaves are strong! Did you know a full grown water-platter leaf can support up to 125 pounds—but don’t step on it, the weight has to be evenly distributed.

And this is just the start—we have over 100 waterlilies, both tropical and temperate, that bloom day and night throughout the display.

(3) Longwood Gardens maintains approximately 50 beehives in its perimeter and natural areas and an observation hive in the Lookout Loft Treehouse. These hives contain the western honeybee, Apis mellifera, and are tended by a beekeeper who keeps the hives healthy and extracts and processes the honey, which is sold in The GardenShop. Honeybees are vital to humans as the primary pollinator for many crops. In the United States, it is estimated that honeybees accomplish one quarter of the pollination needed for all fruit produced for human consumption.

Additionally, Longwood Gardens also provides habitats for our native bees like the mason, carpenter, and bumble bee. Along with the western honeybee, native bee species help pollinate many of the trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants throughout our Gardens and beyond.

History Flows From our Fountains Student Exhibition Garden is Out of this World (2) This spring, catch a glimpse of four new garden displays in our Student Exhibition Garden. The culmination of more than a year of work, the Student Exhibition Garden features displays designed, constructed, and maintained by second-year students in Longwood’s Professional Gardener Program. Now in its third year of existence, the Student Exhibition Garden explores a new theme each year. This year, students interpreted the theme of light. With displays designed to mimick traveling through the stars, walking on the moon, and the clearing of a storm, this Garden is an experience that is out of this world.

The Student Exhibition Garden is on display now through October.

(4) Longwood Gardens has more fountains than any other garden in the country. The Italian Water Garden’s 600 jets are being adorned in white lights for the first time ever this summer. The Open Air Theatre, inspired by Italian gardens, boasts 750 jets lit in all colors of the rainbow. The Main Fountain Garden, inspired by 19th-century world’s fairs, has 380 streams spewing 10,000 gallons per minute illuminated by 724 lights in more than 17 million possible color combinations! All these unique displays have been dazzling visitors since the 1920s and 30s and continue to do so today.

Swath of Blue Sage Helps Illuminate Arrow Spring

The Mystery Behind Night-Blooming Plants

(5) One of the seven outdoor installations debuting when Light opens is Arrow Spring. A 290-foot serpentine trail of 2,500 blue sage plants, Arrow Spring resembles a flowing watercourse by day and a meandering stream of light by night.

It is located between three celebrated gardens—Flower Garden Drive, Flower Garden Walk, and Peirce’s Woods.

Arrow Spring’s luminescence is the result of the innovative pairing of ordinary oil lamps and cutting-edge fiber optics concealed within sculptural spheres placed throughout the landscape, weaving 15,000 points of light into the swath of sage. We chose sage for this installation because we needed a tough annual flower that blooms all summer long.

(6) Moonlight gardens are designed to thrill the senses when the sun has set!

This summer, the area just outside of our Visitor Center will feature exciting silver foliaged and white flowered

plants that add color, fragrance, and texture at night. Typically, nightblooming plants become more attractive in the evening either by scent or color to attract pollinators.

The flowers of night-blooming plants are light in color—usually whites or light yellow, and some are only fragrant at night. Flowering tobacco (Nicotiana sylvestris), a night-blooming plant that will be on display, only produces a fragrance after the sun goes down. Other evening highlights include: Athyrium ‘Ghost’, a fern that glows at night under the moon, and Arundo donax ‘Variegata’, a giant grass that emerges with almost pure white leaves that glow in the moonlight.
