About this Issue In October 2014, we began the largest project in our history, the revitalization of our beloved Main Fountain Garden.

We are working with the nation’s leading firms dedicated to historic preservation, landscape design, and water feature design to complete this monumental undertaking. Once completed, the Main Fountain Garden will be at the cutting edge of both design and engineering, just as it was when Mr. du Pont first unveiled the Main Fountain Garden in 1931.

In this issue, we celebrate the revitalization through a series of images depicting some of the unique materials used in the project. You will also find workshops, lectures, and tours inspired by the artistry and innovation inherent in the revitalization. More than 2,700 boxwood have been grown for planting in the Main Fountain Garden. Ranging in height from 18–48 inches, the boxwood (Buxus microphylla var. japonica ‘Green Beauty’) will create a green oasis that enhances the garden’s majestic architecture.

Ornamental Horticulture Expand your knowledge of horticulture through Longwood’s Certificate of Merit in Ornamental Horticulture. The program is self-paced, enabling students to pursue the full certificate course series, or simply select an individual 6-week or 3-week class of interest.

Students in the Certificate of Merit program can earn sequential, multiple Certificates of Merit in Ornamental Horticulture (Level I, II, III). Upon completion of each certificate level, students will learn the identifying characteristics, habits, and growing information for 300 plants. Each certificate is earned consecutively and is based on meeting the requirements listed on the following page. Required courses (to ensure a base level of knowledge) along with electives in plant sciences, plant identification, and horticultural techniques are available for a tailor-made horticulture learning experience.

The world of exotic and tropical plants, from colorful foliage to fragrant flowers, will be covered in this course, with concentration on identification, culture, growth patterns, and management in the interior and exterior landscape. Appropriate overwintering locations will also be discussed. The use of these plants provides the opportunity to add color, texture, movement, and seasonal excitement to interiors throughout the year and to containers and garden beds in the warm season for home, garden, institutional, or commercial applications.

Understanding and caring for a garden’s soil is essential for helping plants to thrive.

A plant’s nutrition, growth, and ability to endure environmental conditions all depend heavily on the soil in which it’s growing.

Discover how soils differ in texture and structure, physical and chemical properties, and fertility. Learn how a soil’s pH and organic matter affect plant growth and how to work with the soil in your garden to get the best results.

Flowering trees are among the most eye-catching plants in season. Defined as flowering trees less than 40 feet tall, these plants make spectacular statements, accents, and specimen trees in any landscape. Woodland and shade gardens create peaceful and dramatic areas in a landscape.

Shade loving plants allow the gardener to add creativity to the garden with form, texture, and color. This course will also address the challenges of gardening in dry shade. Ornamental grasses fill a valuable niche in garden design through the virtues of their form, texture, flowering, and cultural preferences. This course will introduce you to the culture, identification, use, and landscape design qualities of a range of plants suitable for use in the MidAtlantic region. Information presented will focus on each plant’s unique qualities, key identification characteristics, and considerations for selection in the design of traditional, contemporary, and naturalistic landscapes. Attention will be given to the Family Poaceae (true grasses) and grass-like perennials in other families.

This class, directed to horticulture professionals as well as continuing education students who are well versed in horticulture, can be used to meet the requirement for Plant Science for the Ornamental Horticulture Certificate, Level III.

Students will register and attend a daylong conference. A list of annual local conferences is available through the Continuing Education office. The conference selected must be pre-approved by the Continuing Education Coordinator.

Ever wonder what a phrase such as “dentate margin” means? Improve your plant identification skills through a study of leaves, stems, flowers, and fruits. Look in detail at the methods (morphology) and terminology (nomenclature) used to describe plants throughout the seasons.

You will also gain an understanding of the botanical system of plant names and how the plant kingdom is organized. This is important “groundwork” for anyone hoping to become a better gardener.

The conference experience will be enriched and evaluated by the post-conference submission of targeted discussion questions to demonstrate the student’s understanding of the topics presented and the implications for their horticultural practices and decision making. A grade of 70% or better is required to receive credit for this course. *Conference registration fees not included.

Longwood Gardens is partnering with North Carolina State University to provide a unique fully online survey of plants. These courses will expose you to plants that can be grown throughout the nation. The use and key identifying characteristics of these plants are shared through photo stories, presentations, online fact pages, and beautiful images.

These courses will remain open for you to review (un-facilitated) for six months after the course closes.

These courses can be used toward Longwood’s Certificate of Merit in Ornamental Horticulture and count as a 3-week elective. Please be aware that plants taught in these online courses are the more common varieties and may have been presented in previous on-site courses within the Ornamental Horticulture Certificate Program.

Landscape Design Gain the design and drawing skills to create exquisite landscapes with ease through our Certificate of Merit in Landscape Design. Whether you are pursuing the entire course series to earn a Certificate of Merit, or just interested in beautifying your property, landscape design courses are available to everyone. Previous knowledge of plant material is strongly recommended and is required for some courses.

To earn the Certificate of Merit, the student must satisfactorily complete the following core courses, receiving a minimum grade of 70% in each course. Core course grades will be based on assignments, class projects, and participation.

Elective courses will be graded on a pass/non-pass basis. To receive credit toward a Certificate, students must complete an assignment. Small class size ensures low student-teacher ratios. Please register early.

The idea of landscape design is actually to create the garden of your dreams, not just draw it! Have you completed your plan but are now struggling with putting a price to it and making it a reality? If so, this class is for you. Learn to break the job down into units of measure, and how to organize your estimate. Costing strategies for plants, hard goods, and equipment will be given to apply to an example project, helping you to pull it all together.

This course is an in-depth approach to the design process, traditional landscape graphics and topics related to sustainable landscapes.

Through lectures and demonstrations, learn to produce professional-quality, conceptual designs. Utilizing a home landscape on Longwood grounds, students gain practice in process and design drawing. Get acquainted with design tools and online resources that are key to producing practical designs. In a final project, develop a creative, yet feasible solution for a given site.

Sketching is an integral element to a designer’s tool kit. Develop a foundation in field sketching techniques including line, tone, and color through drawing exercises designed for the novice landscape designer.

By exploring indoor and outdoor sites at Longwood Gardens, learn to communicate visually. Weekly peer-reviewed assignments will provide supportive feedback and help you achieve your goals.

Garden designers have been called creative problem solvers. They must take into consideration site characteristics and challenges, as well as plant combinations for year-round interest. Using elements from Landscape Design I, create beautiful planting designs with balance, repetition, and cohesiveness. Insightful discussion of traditional plant combinations for both formal and informal styles is paired with examples of effective planting designs used at Longwood and other gardens. This practical course allows you to develop a planting plan based on realistic situations and clearly communicate the desired effect and design intent.

Discover a new design paradigm by exploring the relationship between people and plants in the context of event, time, and space, yielding vibrant gardens with depth and relevancy. Learn through discussion, slides, and online group exercises, how to define spaces that are truly supportive of people and plants. Learn how to use time and the sustainable principles of economy, environment, and social capital to make informed and effective design decisions.

Gain an understanding of the similarities and differences among Chinese, Korean, and Japanese gardens. Learn about components of traditional Asian gardens, as well as interpretive gardens that borrow ideas and adapt them in innovative ways.

This class will include an initial design overview to understand the historic context and complexity of Asian gardens, with applications for the United States. Rock placement will be addressed, with step-bystep construction approaches to the use of rocks in garden design. Asian garden plants and the use of garden elements, such as walls, fences, walkways, lanterns, and basins will also be discussed.

Join us as we travel to two public gardens in New York. Wave Hill is a 28-acre public garden and cultural center in the Bronx, overlooking the Hudson River and Palisades.

It boasts magnificent views and restored gardens and spaces that provide an oasis of serenity in the Bronx. Just a short ride away in Yonkers, we’ll visit Untermyer Gardens, the former estate of Samuel Untermyer.

These gardens are undergoing a large revitalization and while the core is intact, much of the gardens is in ruin. Dan will give us background information as we travel. We’ll be treated to a staff-guided tour at each location, who will share the rich history and revitalization goals past, present, and future.

We will explore how basic design concepts can relate to your own garden, no matter the scale. This tour is a requirement in our Landscape Design Certificate program but is open to anyone with an interest in historical gardens.

Prerequisite Landscape Design I Why do some designs succeed and others not? Conceptualize gardens using a variety of drawing techniques and develop a more sophisticated understanding of design theory. Become increasingly comfortable with identification of goals and objectives, site inventory and analysis, and the various design phases. Delve deeper into design creativity, detailed garden features, and more advanced graphics by solidifying concepts presented in previous courses.

Pathways lead us from place to place in our gardens, our workplace, and our lives. Join us as we discover how to design and construct pathways in the context of residential garden design. In this practical and interactive course we will study the materials, methods, and construction techniques of the hardscape feature of pathways. Through photos, group discussions, and a small design project you will learn how to design interest, intrigue, and discovery into your garden’s paths. Outside the classroom, we will use Longwood as a teaching lab and explore the many wonderful walkways, meadow paths, and garden connectors throughout the property.

Precast blocks and sod for the Main Fountain Garden. Sod was delivered from a farm in Pennsylvania to ensure compatibility with our native soils. The rest of the garden turf areas will receive sod grown in sandbased soil that will be compatible with the designed soil.

Learn about the benefits of school garden programs and how to start, maintain, and grow a program of your own. Topics addressed throughout the course include garden types and themes, building a support network, curriculum connections, funding your garden project, and garden maintenance. Course participants visit local school gardens, receive feedback and advice from teachers, and take home curriculum resources and plant material. Pennsylvania teachers qualify for Act 48 credits.

Controlling pests on plants in the home, greenhouse, or interiorscape is a constant challenge. On a walk through Longwood’s Conservatory, students will study the common pests and observe some effective management strategies. Discussion will focus on the accurate identification and life-cycles of typical indoor plant pests and the corresponding natural, biological, and “least-toxic” chemical controls.

Where Betula Room & Soil Shed Crevice gardens are built by layering flat, vertical pieces of stone with soil in the crevices between them. The narrow bands of soil mimic the natural rock cracks and crevices where many alpine and rock garden plants grow in the wild. Crevice gardens prove to be an excellent way to provide the perfect habitat for these beautiful and unusual plants in the garden. Whether you are a beginner or a long-time alpine enthusiast, a crevice garden is a welcome addition to any porch or patio. Create your own small container crevice garden with an assortment of cool alpine plants.

All supplies are included to make your own alpine garden.

Where Visitor Center Parking Lot Get ready for the Community Read, (see page 47) by discovering How Water Works through an exploration of the Fairmount Water Works, Fairmount Park, and The Franklin Institute. Designed in 1812 by Frederic Graff (1774–1847) and Frederic Graff, Jr. (1817–1890), and constructed over a 50-year period, The Fairmount Water Works remains an impressive engineering feat. It revolutionized municipal infrastructure and is a popular Philadelphia icon. This tour will include a white-glove experience at The Franklin Institute, where you will get a chance to see the original documents and engineering plans of the Water Works from The Graff Collection and explore the Amazing Machines exhibition.

At Fairmount Park, experts will highlight the movement of water throughout the park from drinking fountains, man-made lakes, fountains, and even sewers. Join us for this unique opportunity!

From the earliest telescopes to the cutting edge technological advancements of the 21st century, Derrick will provide an exciting lecture that examines the science behind seeing the stars. Following his lecture, staff from The Franklin Institute and local amateur astronomers will provide telescopes and instruction for you to view the night sky above the Meadow Garden. This evening is part of Longwood’s Community Read celebration. As part of the night’s activities, Community Read featured author, David Macaulay, will be on hand to sign his new book, The Way Things Work Now. Don’t miss this star-filled night!

This is a rain or shine event. In the event of inclement weather, guests will have a chance to view the telescopes within the conservatory and ask Derrick Pitts and the amateur astronomers questions during a panel discussion.

This event comes a week before the start of Philly Science Week, when there will be sites across the region where you can continue to explore astronomy, and other exciting science topics.

Community Read Join Longwood Gardens and our community partners for the fourth year of our Community Read—a program designed to encourage reading for pleasure and start a conversation. We are very excited for 2017—the year for the grand reopening of our revitalized Main Fountain Garden, which has been under renovation for more than two years. Our founder Pierre S. du Pont’s love for fountains stretched back to when he was mesmerized at the age of six by the huge display of water pumps at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. He first turned on the Main Fountain Garden fountains in 1931, after spending 20 years designing and building them. Mr. du Pont’s passion for his fountains and the engineering behind them has inspired us in our choices for this year’s Community Read books.

We have chosen The Way Things Work Now by award-winning author, illustrator, and “Master Explainer” David Macaulay (published Oct. 2016) as our Community Read book for the whole family. The Way Things Work Now is a sweeping new update to the worldwide bestseller, The New Way Things Work, and includes sections on the technology in our daily lives. The Way Things Work Now explains complex mechanical processes in a humorous and accessible style, accompanied by engaging illustrations. David Macaulay’s books have sold more than three million copies in the United States alone, and his work has been translated into a dozen languages.

We’ve also chosen Rosie Revere, Engineer as the Community Read book for our youngest readers. Written by Andrea Beaty and illustrated by David Roberts, this is the story of Rosie, a little girl with dreams of becoming a great engineer. “Where some people see rubbish, Rosie Revere sees inspiration. Alone in her room at night, shy Rosie constructs great inventions from odds and ends.”

It boasts magnificent views and restored gardens and spaces, which provide an oasis of serenity in the Bronx. Just a short ride away in Yonkers, we’ll also visit Untermyer Gardens, the former estate of Samuel Untermyer. These gardens are undergoing a large revitalization and while the core is intact, much of the garden is in ruin. Dan will give us background information as we travel to these historic sites. At each location, staff-guided tours will share the rich history and revitalization goals past, present, and future. We will explore how basic design concepts can relate to your own garden, no matter the scale. This tour is a requirement in our Landscape Design Certificate of Merit program, but is open to anyone with an interest in historical gardens.

Where Betula Room & Meadow Garden The Eastern bluebird population has increased due to humans constructing, maintaining, and monitoring nest boxes made specifically for these beautiful native birds. Learn more about the bird’s life history and nesting habits, as well as how to build, position, and monitor your own nest boxes. Ian and Bob will also share information about a current project colorbanding bluebirds in order to track them throughout the year.

Learn to shoot the natural beauty of orchids through composition, light, and background control, and close-up photography. A presentation, shooting sessions with Josh, formal critique of participants’ images, and the introduction of image-enhancement techniques, complete the workshop.

Participants must bring their own digital photographic equipment and are encouraged to bring a laptop computer and a flash drive to download images for the critique. Another option is to bring a flash drive with previously taken JPEG images of orchids. Participants should have a working knowledge of their camera.

Some activities are not applicable to point-andshoot cameras. A tripod is optional, but highly recommended.

The word “Photography” comes from the Greek root words “Photo” (meaning “light”) and “graphia” (meaning “drawing”), so photography truly does mean “drawing with light.” With simple LED flashlights you will learn how to light an orchid from Longwood’s collection using these simple yet effective tools. The magic happens when you learn how to layer your exposures in Adobe Photoshop to create a stunning and dramatic image.

Camera mechanics will be de-emphasized in favor of learning elements of composition and seeing new photo ops where seemingly few exist. This workshop will focus on the outside grounds and gardens of Longwood.

Make your garden images stand out by learning basic digital photographic techniques in clear, easily applied terms.

This five-week, interactive, online course engages students with hands-on projects and rich open discussions in a fully online environment. Complete weekly assignments in garden photography by shooting anywhere in the world. Assignments guide you from basic composition to editing techniques. Benefit from sharing and critiquing one another’s work on a weekly basis in discussion boards and review from the instructor.

Beginning basic equipment selections and camera care, manual settings on a digital camera (ISO, shutter speed, and f/ stop) will start the class. Class materials and assignments will be devoted to seeing and composing through the lens (zooming, focus), exposure and metering, direction and quality of light. The final assignments will challenge you to use color to capture a mood. This class also covers basic editing techniques (level, color correction, black and white, and file sizes).

The vibrant, colorful chrysanthemums of Longwood’s Chrysanthemum Festival are the inspiration for close-up photography.

The goal of the workshop is to capture images that are Artistic, Bold, and Close-up (ABC’s). Explore the use of telephoto and macro lenses, extension tubes, closeup filters, flash and focus stacking. The workshop includes a classroom session, an illustrated handout, and shooting sessions with the instructor. Also, the workshop will introduce and cover basic Lightroom, Photoshop/Photoshop Elements techniques for close-up image enhancement using participants’ images for demonstrations. Capture the intimate beauty of chrysanthemums while exploring colors, shapes, and patterns as elements of composition.

Benefit from sharing and critiquing one another’s work on a weekly basis in discussion boards and review from the instructor.

Beginning basic equipment selections and camera care, manual settings on a digital camera (ISO, shutter speed, and f/ stop) will start the class.
