Highlights from Our Gardens

With 17 distinct growing zones, the vast majority of our greenhouse is dedicated to custom-growing plants for our seasonal displays and enables us to now grow our cascade chrysanthemums—the hallmark of our Chrysanthemum Festival indoors. By growing these specialty chrysanthemums indoors, we are able to protect them from undesirable outdoor heat, humidity, and moisture levels, as well as use precise technology in order to control light levels, temperature, and moisture levels … which all allows us to further elevate our cascade chrysanthemum artistry and display capabilities. With this technology at hand, for this year’s display we were able to not only nurture and create a variety of specialty chrysanthemum forms— from eye-catching spirals to dreamy clouds to soaring baskets—but we were also able to force more chrysanthemums to flower earlier than we ever have before. The result is stunning, lush color you’ll enjoy throughout the entire Chrysanthemum Festival season.

With Flying Colors Every year, we stretch our horticultural limits with our Chrysanthemum Festival, a colorful celebration of the quintessential autumnal flower, and the largest and oldest chrysanthemum display in North America—and this year is no exception. With this year’s Chrysanthemum Festival, we’re tickled pink (and orange, and red, and so on) that our chrysanthemums will boast vibrant color from the start to the end of the season. While you’ll still see some green as our mums come into peak bloom, you’ll also notice that vibrancy abounds this season more than ever before—all thanks to the display capabilities made possible by our newest nursery production greenhouse. Opened in December 2020, this groundbreaking facility—consisting of a 15,600-square-foot headhouse and 65,348-square-foot greenhouse— accommodates a variety of plant materials, growing methods, and environments … which in turn allows us to grow a variety of plants more precisely and with less resource input.

Welcoming Our New Director of Conservatories and Horticulture Design In June we welcomed our new Director of Conservatories and Horticulture Design Chad Davis to our Gardens. A creative and respected horticulturist with a unique set of skills in conservatory management and design, Davis comes to Longwood from Gardens by the Bay in Singapore, where he oversaw all horticultural aspects of the conservatories from site preparation and initial planting, as well as the care of a diverse collection of Mediterranean, desert, and tropical montane forest plants. Here at Longwood, Davis will ensure we continue to create extraordinary horticultural displays for our guests while helping to elevate and drive innovation and creativity. “Longwood has a reputation for its extraordinary horticulture and standard of excellence,” shares Davis. “I am eager to hit the ground running alongside Longwood’s talented team to further elevate and amplify the dynamic displays.”

Longwood Reimagined: The Project Progresses

We have reached several notable milestones in recent months as our garden expansion continues to take shape and make incredible progress. In June, we lifted the first section of steel—weighing in at around 11,000 pounds and measuring 47 feet tall— for the West Conservatory (above). This section is one of the 13 frames (or rows of columns and beams) that will form the structure of the West InConservatory.lateJuly,we embarked on the precast facade panel installation for the new Restaurant and Event Space, which totals more than 50 precast panels, each weighing in at 15,000 pounds. The center panel includes a replica of the datestone from the original Conservatory construction. As always, we’ll keep you updated on our Longwood Reimagined progress and continue to share the many facets of this incredibly detailed project as it unfolds. You can watch as the project progresses at org/longwood-reimaginedprojectbeauty-makinglongwoodgardens.org/,aswellassignupforupdatesatlongwoodgardens.

The six talented professionals selected for the 2022–23 Fellows Program cohort have begun their Fellows experience, and we’re so glad to welcome them to our Gardens. Now embarking on our immersive residential program that develops global leaders in the field of public horticulture, our fifth Fellows Cohort includes Danny Cox from Naples Botanical Garden in Naples, FL; Ryan Gott, Ph.D., from Pittsburgh, PA; Amanda Hannah from the Seattle Parks Department at the Washington Park Arboretum in Seattle, WA; Rama Lopez-Rivera from the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (Scotland); Anamari (Ana) Mena from Orlando, FL; and Rae Vassar from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society in Philadelphia, PA.

Throughout their experience, the Fellows will develop and refine their leadership skills, become immersed in the culture of Longwood and other regional public horticulture organizations, participate in a mentoring program, complete coursework, and fulfill a two-month field placement at a domestic or international garden … all while working collectively on a single project that spans the duration of the program. We invite you to experience their 13-month journey along with them. Look for updates and findings from our Fellows at journeyorg/follow-the-fellowslongwoodgardens.andjointheirat
