Our horticulture expertise shines during Chrysanthemum Festival. From our Thousand Bloom Mum, to our Night of 1,000 Lights lantern festival, there are thousands upon thousands of reasons to celebrate autumn in our Gardens.

Chrysanthemum Festival October 25–November 23

Experience our best expression of the art of horticulture during Chrysanthemum Festival, showcasing the Asian tradition of cultivating chrysanthemums into artistic shapes.

Step inside our 4-acre Conservatory and discover more than 80,000 chrysanthemum blooms nurtured and trained into inspiring forms, including shields, spirals, cascades, balls, and even a 10-foot tall yellow chandelier.

Be amazed by the crown jewel of our display, the Thousand Bloom Mum— featuring more than 1,300 perfectly arranged flowers—the largest of its kind grown outside of Asia.

Did You Know?

Chrysanthemums were first grown and displayed in the Gardens when our founder Pierre S. du Pont opened the Conservatory in 1921. Today, Chrysanthemum Festival is one of the largest and oldest chrysanthemum displays in North America.

Highlights from Our Gardens Autumn’s Colors in Our Meadow Garden (1) If you experienced the tranquil green of our Meadow Garden this summer, you’ll be amazed by its color transformation this fall. Plan another visit to explore our newest garden and be inspired by the vibrant yellows of our goldenrod and purples of our asters. There’s also no better place to view the changing fall foliage in the adjacent forest than from the many Meadow paths. Venture to the Hawk Point Pavilion for a breathtaking view of the landscape filled with red and gold Indiangrass and little bluestem. While you’re there, keep an eye out for bald eagles, various hawks, and osprey during the fall raptor migration. Kids may even spot woolly bear caterpillars, giant leopard moth caterpillars, and families of deer grazing. The Meadow Garden comes to life in the fall, and we hope to see you there.

During Meadow Days, Longwood Gardens is proud to partner with Natural Lands Trust, a regional land conservation organization.

Bonsai Display Roots (2) Our interest in bonsai began in 1959 when Yuji Yoshimura came to teach a class in the art of training miniature trees. Inspired by his visit, Longwood purchased 13 of his plants.

Of the 13 original plants, four remain a part of our current collection. Today, Longwood has a total of 40 bonsai.

At any given time, visitors can see 12–14 bonsai on view in our Conservatory—as our gardeners rotate which bonsai we feature. Throughout the autumn season, many of our deciduous bonsai have leaves that change to a vibrant fall color. Peak color is typically the few weeks before Thanksgiving. Some years we even get to see a full-size pomegranate grow on our bonsai pomegranate tree, and another fall highlight is displaying a few select bonsai chrysanthemums.

Student Exhibition Garden: Every Place Tells a Story (3) Every year, the senior Professional Gardener class is split into four teams and tasked to create a garden showcasing what they have learned in the two-year program. Given a budget, the students set out to design a garden following a theme—and this year’s theme was “Every Place Tells a Story.” The students worked closely with our experts and craftsmen to create four impressive displays.

Whether it involved welding a 430pound metal structure so large it had to be brought in by crane, or tying 8,700 neon zip ties to archways, the displays this year demonstrate the students’ creative talent and imagination. Visit the garden stories in the Student Exhibition Garden now through mid-October.

The Longwood Gardens Professional Gardener Program is a two-year, tuition-free program that combines hands-on experience and a rigorous academic curriculum to prepare students for employment as professional horticulturists. Learn more at longwoodgardens.org.

All Aboard Our Garden Railway Opens September 6 This fall, be sure to bring your little ones (and big ones) to visit our Garden Railway in its new location near the Birdhouse Treehouse. Five locomotives and more than 45 different engines rumble through the G-scale model train display. The Garden Railway operates during regular Gardens hours, weather permitting, through January 11, 2015.

New Courses on Tap for Continuing Education in 2015

Organ Competition Documentary: Coming in 2015 A documentary chronicling the journey of the 10 finalists in the 2013 Longwood Gardens International Organ Competition is nearly complete.

With the support of generous sponsors and the vision of established filmmaker and producer Eric Schultz of PCK Media, the documentary is in its final editing stages and will be premiering in 2015. Follow the 10 competitors as they deal with the grueling pressures of the competition and go behind-the-scenes as the drama unfolds leading up to the announcement of the Pierre S. du Pont First Prize winner. Viewers will see that the organ continues to be an important instrument, and how Longwood Gardens is propelling the art form forward while helping develop the next generation of musicians.

Highlights include the integration of culinary arts and the home landscape with Longwood’s talented gardeners and chefs, crevice gardening, early planting using cold frames and low hoops, and brewing compost tea. Whether you are a painter, photographer, or just interested in the plants and animals that inhabit our new Meadow Garden, a seasonal series of meadow-inspired courses await you. This season, our latest floral design courses offer new techniques using orchids, pumpkins, and amaryllis, as well as inventive ways to use structural elements to enhance your designs.

Pumpkin Playground Returns Opens October 1 Visit our Children’s Corner to see, touch, and strike a pose for a photo with our pumpkins. The Pumpkin Playground features a collection of colorful pumpkins that kids can move, manipulate, and play with. Wander over to our Vegetable Garden to see the largest pumpkin on display, weighing in at over 800 pounds.

New Heights The Fountain Revitalization Project Beginning Mid-October

We are thrilled to tell our Members about the largest project in our Gardens’ history this fall when we begin the restoration and renovation of our beloved Main Fountain Garden. A formal announcement is planned for September 25 but we wanted you to know first. As steward of one of the world’s great fountain gardens, our aim is to protect and preserve this invaluable piece of Longwood’s heritage built by our founder, Pierre S. du Pont. Since its debut in 1931 it’s been in continual use and is in desperate need of this restoration and repair.

This exciting project will focus on four important design issues: 1

Preservation of the legacy of Pierre S. du Pont’s original design

Restoration of the architectural features you’ve come to love

3

Creation of a new mechanical and electrical infrastructure to support its use for the next century

4

Amplification of the landscape and fountains of this Europeaninspired garden

As the project progresses, there will be special programs, exhibits, tours, and opportunities for you to learn more about the experts and artisans involved in this important endeavor. In addition, we are planning new, awe-inspiring experiences so that Longwood remains a world apart experience for you.

Tuesday, October 21, 8 pm Described as a “quartet with a difference” by the Irish Times, the Dublin Guitar Quartet is a one-of-akind classical guitar ensemble in the chamber music world. Audiences can expect an entertaining and completely novel concert experience featuring music of Arvo Pärt, John Tavener, and others.

Thursday, October 30, 8 pm Chestnut continually tours with his trio, playing at jazz festivals around the world. His prowess as a soloist has also led him to be a first call for the piano chair in many big bands including the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band.

Peter Richard Conte Thursday, November 13, 8 pm Peter Richard Conte is Principal Organist of The Longwood Organ and Grand Court Organist of the world famous Wanamaker Organ at the Macy’s department store in Philadelphia. Conte was appointed Grand Court Organist in 1989, and is only the fourth person to hold that title since the organ first played in 1911. His program will include Bizet’s Suite from Carmen and Elgar’s Enigma Variations.

A Longwood Christmas takes ight this year with our bird-inspired display.

From elegant trees adorned with feathered friends, to a peacock-themed Masquerade Ball in our Music Room, our holiday season soars. Topiary swans grace our Exhibition Hall, while whimsical trees depict the classic tales The Ugly Duckling and The Goose that Laid the Golden Egg. Outside, all eyes are on the sky as illuminated stars twinkle above, colorful fountains dancing to holiday music rise high in the air, and a half-million lights brighten the night.
