Letter from the Director

“Childhood is a state of mind which ends the moment a puddle, which is first viewed as opportunity – turns into an obstacle” – Unknown Fall in the northwest can get many people down, - it’s dark, it’s damp, and it’s cold. We feel like we can’t go outside, cabin fever kicks in, and mother nature can be relentless for six long months. We request you join us by inviting your inner child to come out to play. This brochure is full of ways to combat cabin fever, to move and to shake, to learn and to grow, and to make memories. Our programs and events are not just for children, our dance classes make for great date nights, our fun runs make for family bonding, and our enrichment classes are a great way to have a fun and meaningful night out with friends. I urge you to sit down with this book and circle something you think is fun (or more than one thing). There is literally something for everyone – I could not be more proud of our little team and what we have to offer. Then text a friend or family member and invite them to join you.

With that in mind, we are pleased to offer our newest local community event “The Big Day Wedding & Event Expo.” We provide a venue for brides, families, friends and planners to connect with local vendors who can provide services and products as a part of their big day. Attendees will have an unforgettable day of shopping, complimentary samples, a fashion show, useful DIY tutorials, and prize drawings.

This event is designed to meet and even exceed the expectations of the planning team! Not only is it about connecting the newly engaged in our community with the offerings available to them, it will also provide the combined experience of shopping, entertainment, and fashion all under one roof.

Kid’s Fish In

Location: Martin’s Dock, Lake Sacajawea Kid’s Fish-In is conducted by Longview Parks and Recreation Department of Fish and Wildlife, Cowlitz Game & Anglers, Coastal Conservation Association, Mt. St. Helen’s Bassmasters, & Lower Columbia Fly Fishers. Additional funding and support from WDFW Region 5, ALEA grant funding, & Longview Parks and Recreation Foundation.

Community Gardens - 10’ x 40’ or 20’ x 40’ Garden spaces for public rental will be available in 2020 at the 32nd Ave garden site. Water and porta potty included. Two space limit per family with possible additional plots after April 30. New gardener registration opens March 2nd. Returning gardeners (those who rented a garden in 2019) have until February 21st to retain existing garden(s). A perfect way to participate in healthy eating!

Lego Robotics Club INFO FIRST LEGO League challenges kids ages 9-14 to think like scientists and engineers while they work with a team to solve a real-world problem using LEGO MINDSTORMS technology. Throughout their experience, all ages express the FIRST philosophies of Gracious Professionalism and Coopertition through the core values of Discovery, Innovation, Impact, Inclusion, Teamwork, & Fun! Ages 9 - 14 (Competition Season - August to December / Off-season - February to August) FIRST LEGO League is a year round program that encompasses both a competition season (Aug - Dec) and the off-season (Feb - Aug). During the competition season they are divided up into teams that meet weekly on Monday evenings. During the off-season, meeting are 2nd & 4th Mondays and are designed around giving the kids more experience and practice time.

Create and build robotic components that will perform specific tasks, learn how to incorporate sensors to help your robot navigate, and and program the robot to complete missions and score points at the end-of-season regional competition in December! *Registration is open during the off-season and teams are locked in upon beginning of Competition season. Dances held 3rd Saturday of Month ($4) Woman's Club, 835 21st Ave. Social Club is a program for intellectually challenged adults. We offer a variety of special activities, educational opportunities, events, snacks, a place to socialize and monthly dances.

This is a great place to come hangout meet new friends and see the old ones!

Longview Recreation conducts the local Special Olympic Program that serves developmentally disabled individuals in our community. There are over 250 athletes involved in sports year round. If you or someone you know would like to be involved as a participant or volunteer please call 360-442-5400. All athletes must have a valid Washington Special Olympics physical on file with the recreation office prior to participating.

Special Olympics Basketball

Basketball: Skills testing and first meeting will be held Thursday, December 5th at 7:15 pm at Monticello Middle School Gym. Teams will be formed after this practice .

Soccer: Monday/Thursdays, 5 - 6:00pm. Victoria Freeman Park. March 9th through May 29th. No Cost.

Special Olympics Swimming

Swimming: Wednesdays (4-5pm) and Saturdays (810am). March 7-May 30. Wednesdays are at Kelso High School Pool and Saturdays are at Mark Morris Pool.

Parks & Recreation Advisory Meetings: The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board are Longview residents who volunteer time for the preservation and development of parks, leisure, facilities, and recreation programs for the community. Meetings are generally held at 5:00 p.m. on the third Monday of each month at the Recreation Office.

Resident or Non-Resident?

A resident is anyone who lives or owns property within the Longview City limits.

Even though your mailing address is “Longview” does not necessarily mean you are a city resident. Non-residents pay an additional $5 charge per class or program due at the time of registration. In-city status is determined by tax zoning.

Financial Scholarships: Financial assistance may be available for youth who, for financial reasons would be unable to participate in a recreation program. To be considered, a child must reside within the Longview city limits.

Requests should be made at least five business days before the class begins.

Contributions are accepted to help children that would otherwise be unable to participate in a class or program. Morning recreation programs are cancelled when schools are delayed due to weather. Afternoon and evening recreation programs are cancelled when schools release or close early due to weather. Call the 360-442-5980 for additional information on weather related closures/delays.

Pre-registration Required: Pre-registration is required for classes unless noted. Many classes fill up quickly so register early to ensure that you or your child will not be disappointed. Please note - same day “on-site” registration is rarely accepted by instructors.
