Community Advocate Erika Quiroz, Cary Bellows & Juice Quiroz
Radical Love
A native of West Virginia, Erika Quiroz came to Washington in 2012 looking for a positive community in which to raise her son, Juice. From their first Sunday in Longview, they were embraced at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. As a loving community of support and friendship rose up around the newcomers, they found themselves wanting to do more to help shine a light on the loving, inclusive group they had found there. At the same time, Longview/Kelso was already in the midst of its housing and homelessness crisis. The Love Overwhelming shelter was on the verge of closure, temperatures were dropping, and unsheltered citizens were struggling to survive. The sight of people pressed into doorways in the biting cold tore at Erika’s heart. So, when temperatures dipped into the low 20s, Erika (a life-long hobby chef) and Juice made a pot of chili and headed out into the dark. Into all those doorways they handed bowls of chili with sour cream and cheese, a few slices of bread and ginger snaps. The experiences they had that night were moving and powerful. When Erika began to share those experiences with others, they got excited. “Do it, again!” they said. And, as people began to make donations for more pots of food and offered to help in the kitchen, they did. The pot of chili became a weekly pot of something tasty for the shelter and more hands joined to help cook it. At first, the focus was just delicious food served with dignity and love; but, as they came to know the people they were serving, the team realized that was not enough. The health of those living outside is severely compromised. Sick people can’t get well eating unhealthy food. When Erika and Juice brought food to Love Overwhelming Juice always passed out candy, hiding it in people’s shoes and backpacks. The friends there loved it; but, with so many illnesses related to poor diet, sugar was cut from the menu along with white flour products, canned vegetables and processed foods. The focus became nutrient-rich meals, food equity, food education and loving, embracing community. That is Radical Love. The focus on healthy food drew a new kind of support and enthusiasm. Soon, Lower Columbia School Gardens joined the team. Local, organic produce grown by our schools’ children was given to nourish and support those who needed it. Volunteers shared some of the bounty of their own gardens, as well. Fresh, living food wove its way through ethnic dishes and comfort food favorites. Plates thoughtfully arranged and bright with color drew smiles, and sometimes tears, from those who came to be nourished by it. The emphasis on nutrition made a clear statement about food equity, and about the value of all human beings, that excited supporters. Everyone needs and deserves fresh, healthful food. Healthy food should not be a luxury. There is enough to share of our best. Through the efforts of Erika, her partner Cary Bellows, Juice, and countless volunteers and supporters, Radical Love continues to thrive. Two meals are served each week at the dining facilities of the former Presbyterian Church in Kelso*. Wednesday, there is a dinner at 4:30. Saturday, there is a potluck at 1:00. Diners are greeted with love and enthusiasm, and volunteers join the guests to share a communal meal. The room is alive with conversation and laughter. It’s not uncommon for some of the regular guests to call out, “Love you!” when leaving, as one does when leaving the home of a friend or family member. Erika feels the spirit of love and acceptance that comes with these Radical meals is as important as the food. Poverty and lack of access to resources creates social isolation. Being pushed out of society creates another kind of illness, illness of the human spirit. Radical Love seeks to bring people back into community, nourishing the human spirit with friendship, acceptance and an open heart. It is this spirit that defines Radical Love, present in the food, the company, and the warmth with which both are offered. Erika, Cary, and Juice want Radical Love to open its arms broader, still. They hope to involve more groups and congregations from our community in this exciting endeavor, building further on the foundation of sharing and acceptance that defines Radical Love. There are many ways to get involved. Come to a meal or contact Radical Love to find out more. Erika says: “We, as a human family, are all a part of one living body. If one part of that body is unwell, we are all unwell. When we nourish the whole, we uplift the whole. And, as Love grows, we grow, too.” You can contact Radical Love at: RadicalLoveMealShare@gmail.com www.RadicalLoveMinistry.com https://www.facebook.com/groups/RadicalLoveMinistry/ Phone Message (St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church) 360.423.5600 *Entrance to the dining facility is located off of Church St., behind the Chinook Apartments at 212 N.
