Julius Burkett heart care success story

GRATEFUL. “THANKS TO LONGVIEW REGIONAL, I’M BACK TO MY LIFE.” When Julius Burkett was diagnosed with a heart rhythm disorder, his cardiologist referred him to Dr. Jorge Massare at Longview Regional. “He said he was pretty sure he could help me,” Julius says. “I trusted Dr. Massare completely.” He performed a procedure to correct Julius’ condition, and the staff took great care of him the entire time. “The nurses were really nice. Longview Regional is an excellent hospital,” he states. Since the procedure, Julius is feeling better and back on the farm. “The only thing I haven’t tried is cutting firewood – yet,” he says.

Longview Businesses Make Blue Ribbon Small Business Award Winners List

wo of Longview’s own made the U.S. Chamber Kelly Hall President/CEO of Commerce Blue Ribbon Small Business Awards list—Baxter Clean Care and ComputerLand Technologies of East Texas. One hundred outstanding companies were recognized for successful and innovative business practices. The Blue Ribbon Small Business Award (http://www.uschambersummit.com/award), is an annual program that recognizes companies for their dedication to the principles of free enterprise, contributions to restoring jobs and supporting economic growth. This year’s winners were selected from a record number of applicants across the nation and each demonstrates exceptional business practices in areas including strategic planning, employee development, community involvement, and customer service.

“As the business community has worked hard to do its part in moving the country forward economically, small businesses have continued to be the driving force responsible for much of our progress,” U.S. Chamber President and CEO Thomas J. Donohue said.

The U.S. Chamber will announce seven regional finalists on March 19 and honor all of this year’s Blue Ribbon Small Business Award winners at the 10th annual America’s Small Business Summit, June 11 – 13 in Washington, D.C. During the summit, one regional finalist will receive the DREAM BIG Small Business of the Year Award, sponsored

by Sam’s Club®, and a $10,000 cash prize courtesy of the U.S. Chamber.

O

rganizations that place a high value on employee learning and professional development see higher levels of engagement, an increased ability to fill leadership positions from within and better retention rates. How important are employee learning initiatives in your institution?

We know the value of workplace education in a volatile economy and tough job market.

Workers and human resource departments have revived interest in continuing education in order to keep up with all the latest skills and relevant knowledge necessary to sustain the pace of competition in today’s work environment and workforce.

The Chamber considers the importance of addressing this trend to be a high priority. To help our members meet these challenges, a structure for learning has been established. Classroom style learning is available in 12-15 development workshops and seminars which consist of webinars and special guest trainers. Business development and women’s leadership seminars are part of the sessions that are held at the Chamber’s offices in the Citizens

When the challenge to educate includes the need to leave work and travel to an education center such as the Chamber offices, many are unable to take advantage of the offering.

This is where Longview Chamber University powered by Global Classroom comes into play. In the larger picture, nine topics offering 115 certificates are part of a growing catalogue. The Certificate curriculum includes hundreds of sessions and modules. Each is available for any person or company that is dedicated to advancing the professional value of their staff.

arely a week into the new retail year, the National Retail Federation is already forecasting a retail industry sales increase of 4.1 percent for 2014, up from last year’s 3.7 percent growth.

As with the 2013 holiday season that ended January 31, “retailers recognize that their customers are still looking for the biggest bang for their buck,” NRF President and Chief Executive Matthew Shay said in a statement.

But the outlook for 2014 as a whole remains strong for retail industry sales, which exclude automobiles, gas stations and restaurants. According to Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University Chief Economist, Dr. Mark Dotzour at the ICSC event in Dallas, in 2014, there will be more people working, more spending, and people not paying off debt.

And with people not paying debt, disposable income will be at an all-time high since 1980.

Industry experts can predict certain economic changes by observing buying patterns. Truck sales are an indicator for small

businesses, because trucks are the backbone of small businesses. If truck sales are on a rise, it indicates that small businesses are investing back into their company and are confident that the economy is good. Local lenders have seen an increase in business loans. According to Dan Droege, Market President for First Bank & Trust East Texas, “There has been a 17% loan growth at our institution. Small businesses are expanding, purchasing equipment, and developing into other communities. Consumers are purchasing more houses for their buck, applying for lines of credit, and loans for investment properties have also increased.”

Creating a Blueprint for Success

T

The Longview Chamber of Commerce and LeTourneau University are partnering in an effort to help entrepreneurial businesses get the expert help they need to be successful.

he Chamber launched the Entrepreneurial Center in 2013 so that the spirit of entrepreneurism would be fostered and nurtured as well as attract vibrant, young businesses and business owners to Longview. This simple idea created a firestorm of community interest and LeTourneau University’s Dr. Bruce Bowman, Dean of the School of Business; Accounting Chair, Sam Walton Fellow; and Enactus Sponsor, Mrs. Emily Bellamy knew exactly who would benefit and contribute to Longview’s entrepreneurial synergy – LETU business students.

Mrs. Bellamy states, “The knowledge and experience gained through this program will reinforce what they [students] are learning in the classroom but will go far beyond that. What they take away from this will serve them well throughout their life and career.”

LeTourneau University’s School of Business also wants to give back to Longview. Dr. Bowman emphasizes that, “LeTourneau University is committed to serving Longview in growing an innovative and sustainable business community. Placing students in Longview’s Chamber of Commerce will enable us to actively engage business leaders and to learn of local needs.” Dr. Bowman’s strategy is in-line with LeTourneau’s overall commitment to encourage in its students the qualities of ingenuity and entrepreneurship that contribute to free enterprise and the democratic process.

The students are enthusiastic about this program and what it means for them. Kara Huff, a freshman International Business major from Edmond, Oklahoma says, “I am very excited and grateful for the opportunity…I want to have the skills to successfully manage and operate my own business.”

The overwhelming response from the students is that this project gives them a real world experience that will complement their already rigorous course work. Skills such as networking, navigating the necessary governmental offices and learning of the current business climate in Longview will give these students an advantage upon graduation. Rachel Langholz, a double major in International Business and Finance from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is excited about the program. “I am hoping to create a business in the next five years, and this class will significantly teach me the means to do so.”

The Chamber is providing ten students the early stage support for their aspiring businesses. Students will be given free office and meeting space as well as technology such as a whiteboard and WiFi, in the heart of Longview’s business community. They will also receive a scholarship to participate in Kilgore College Small Business Development Center’s 8 week training, “How to Start and Operate a Business in East Texas.” The students’ job is to bring their laptop, cell phone and a good idea!

This partnership is mutually beneficial. The Longview Chamber of Commerce’s intent is not only to increase local business and to further a culture of entrepreneurism in Longview, but it is also an effort to provide reasons for bright, young minds, such as LETU’s business students to stay in Longview after graduation. The greatest minds come to Longview to go to school. The Chamber knows that when these students graduate that

he Leadership Longview Alumni Network will host a leadership luncheon on Thursday, March 27.

This Lunch and Learn event will take place at the Anna Lee and Sidney Allen Family Student Center located on the LeTourneau University campus. LL Alumni and graduates will have the opportunity to view and tour this outstanding state-of-the-art, $14 million, 60,000-squarefoot facility which will serve as a dynamic hub for the entire LeTourneau University campus to build community among students from all over campus.

Dr. Dale Lunsford, President of LeTourneau University, will address the luncheon attendees. The topic will be “The Changing Landscape of Higher Education.”

Highlighting Criminal Justice and Education Days

L

eadership Longview Criminal Justice Day was sponsored by Spring Hill State Bank and Westlake Chemical Corporation. The day’s focus was Criminal Justice and Public Safety. The morning session kicked off at the Longview Police Department with a presentation by Chief Don Dingler. Next was a tour of the 911 Emergency Center by PIO Kristie Brian. The morning included a panel discussion with Gregg County Elected officials. District Attorney Carl Dorrough spoke during lunch. During the afternoon the class observed the proceedings of a case in juvenile court with County Court at Law #1 Judge Becky Simpson. Gregg County Sheriff Maxey Cerliano presented and gave a tour of the jail.

Education Day was sponsored by Network Communications and Oak Forest Montessori School. The day was filled with presentations on higher education, career and technology, and private school education. Presenters included Dr. Dale Lunsford, LeTourneau University; Dr. Bruce Bowman, LeTourneau University; Dr. Bill Holda, Kilgore College and Dr. Van Patterson, UTT Longview University Center.

Students in the Culinary Arts department at Longview High School prepared lunch for the class. The afternoon program was a panel discussion of area school districts and a tour of the Career and Technology Department at Longview High School.

ongview’s Main Street Program was recertified in November, 2007. The program has successfully been recognized as a National Main Street City for the past five years, 2009-2013. Receiving this prestigious accreditation is the result of the dedicated staff and volunteers that operate the program.

Gary Ford, Chairman of the Main Street Advisory Committee, is the volunteer On Target. Gary is the Director of Prepaid Services at NetworkIP, a position he has held for the past two years of his 11 year career with the company.

NetworkIP and their sister companies, Network Communications, Encompass Communications and Centris Information Services, strongly encourage their employees to become active in our community through volunteering and actively participating on committees and boards that involve their interests and passions. Employees of these companies currently serve with many different organizations and for many programs and events. Included are AlleyFest, Great

Texas Balloon Race, Habitat for Humanity, Junior Achievement, Leadership Longview, Main Street, Pine Tree Mentors, and the Chamber’s annual Total Resource Campaign.

Gary Ford’s advancement to the Main Street Advisory Committee was a natural progression according to him, “I began as a volunteer for the One Hundred Acres of Heritage (OHAOH) mainly to join the AlleyFest music committee and then I realized all of the other great things that OHAOH does for our community and have received just as much personal enjoyment out of those activities as I have helping with AlleyFest. As the OHAOH transitioned to the Main Street Advisory Board, I became involved with the Promotion team which gave me the opportunity to share my ideas on how to make downtown Longview a better place to live, work, and play. Seeing those ideas come to fruition has been very rewarding.”

The opportunity to meet new people and nurture business contacts is often the reason a person volunteers with a Chamber program.

“Volunteering on the Main Street Advisory board has given me the opportunity to meet a lot of great people, both at the Chamber and across our community. I’ve come to realize that most of the events that the Chamber puts on are carried out by just a Gary Ford handful of Chamber employees Chairman, Longview Main Street and volunteers. Their dedication to Advisory Committee improving Longview is refreshing and has made me appreciate so many of the great things Longview has to offer. In addition, through all of my Chamber activities I have formed many long lasting friendships,” said Ford.

“Being a part of the OHAOH and Main Street boards for the past 8 years and working downtown for the past 11 years, I am a little biased towards downtown redevelopment. So many of the cities I like to visit have strong, vibrant downtowns with unique local restaurants, shops and events. I believe fostering and supporting these areas by offering entrepreneurial development, business resources and financial assistance is a key to strengthening our local economy.”

Gary’s friends or even casual acquaintances come to know his passion for a good brew. Homebrewing has helped Ford develop into one of Longview’s well known brew meisters.

Asked what a recent best or favorite batch has been, he replied, “That’s a toughy… My latest batch is a vanilla bourbon porter that I am really excited about. It was my first endeavor with this style of beer and I am looking forward to perfecting my recipe. It was conditioned with Madagascar vanilla beans and lightly toasted American oak chips soaked in Maker’s Mark bourbon to give the impression that it was aged in a whisky barrel.”

Ford has often been heard talking about hosting a regional level Beer Fest or Festival and hopes that such an event can become a reality in downtown Longview.

First Class Nears Graduation

T

he Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) is a groundbreaking nine-month program that guides students in grades 6-12 through the process of starting a real business, including business plan development, pitching an investor panel, obtaining funding, launching the venture, managing media campaigns, e-commerce and web development, sales events, and trade shows. Students, ages 11 to 18, are taught to recognize the power of their ideas and to develop the skills necessary to turn those ideas into meaningful enterprises.

After months of hard work, this year’s students will be awarded their diplomas.

YEA! at Business Expo Local students from the Longview Chamber’s Young Entrepreneurs Academy Class of 2014 will reveal four new start-up businesses to the public at Business Expo.

The presentation is a culmination of nine months of hard work, resulting in the graduates owning and operating their own businesses.

At YEA!, students are taught by local entrepreneurs and are introduced to guest lecturers, successful entrepreneurs, and business mentors. They brainstorm ideas, write business plans, and actually launch their own company or social movement!

YEA! runs during the academic year from September to May, with classes meeting one day every week. The program is now currently accepting applications for next year’s YEA! Class of 2014-15.

The astute panel consisted of Mark Bogle, Vice President and General Manager of Eastman Chemical Company-Texas Operations; Aliceson Howell, Executive Director of Greater Longview United Way; Jim Kendrick, CEO of Longview Regional Medical Center; Dr. Byron Lichtenberg, Astronaut and co-founder of Zero-G Corporation and a visiting Professor of Engineering at LeTourneau University; Dean Waskowiak, President of Encore Multimedia and Julie Woods, Broker/Owner of Julie Woods and Associates. The CEO Roundtable Discussion was created so that the YEA! students could hear first-hand testimony of what it takes to be a business leader.

The panel was asked a series of questions regarding their experience in business as well as questions relating to the importance of integrity and positive business relationships. Jim Kendrick reiterated the importance of networking by saying, “I think networking is probably the most important aspect of any business, no matter what you are doing.”

W

e’re bringing a new twist to AlleyFest this year by partnering with The City of Longview’s Historic Depot Days! Check out the AlleyFest Map for the new layout and dates. This year the event will have a featured artist area for demonstrations and other fun activities.

Kids Fest is going to be hoppin’ with the Rad Hatter, arts and crafts, Longview Fire Department, Alley Bus and a Kids Fest Stage full of performances.

It will be all day music on The Music Stage with bands performing throughout the day on Friday and Saturday. This will not disappoint!

Don’t forget the carnival located in the Public Parking Lot on Cotton and Center; it is sure to keep the kids busy while you shop for goodies at AlleyFest.

AlleyFest + Depot Days!

In conjunction with AlleyFest, the City of Longview is celebrating the Grand Opening of the newly renovated Historic Longview Depot. The first depot building at the Junction was built over 133 years ago. The current building has served as the heart of transportation in Longview for over 74 years. The renovated facility anchors a new transportation hub that brings together Longview’s public transportation options of Amtrak train, Longview Transit, and Greyhound.

The new layout helps all areas of the festival by providing easier access in three straight blocks. AlleyFest will open at noon on Friday. For the convenience of families and others attending both AlleyFest and Depot Days, there will be a designated dropoff/pick-up spot located next to the carnival for easy access.

To celebrate the occasion, AlleyFest Depot Days will include a variety of train-themed events as well as a historic look at life in Longview when the present train depot opened in 1940. Activities will include tours of the Depot, the Amtrak Exhibit Train, Central Fire Station, and an antique car show.

In addition, there will be Depot Days themed events from community organizations like the Gregg County Historical Museum, Longview World of Wonders, and First Baptist Church among others. Other community organizations are invited to participate in the festivities as well. Most activities will occur in downtown Longview between Tyler and Center Streets for three blocks to Tyler and Green Streets. A free shuttle will provide transportation during the event between downtown and the train depot.

“Longview’s history is directly tied to the development of the railroad, and the Historic Longview Train Depot in particular has played a very significant role. By partnering our Depot Days event with AlleyFest, we are excited to take a look back at what life was like in 1940 and celebrate the importance of trains to Longview,” says Laura Hill, City of Longview Director of Community Services.

Since opening in January 2004, we have provided care for over 4,000 newborns – more than any other hospital in Northeast Texas. Our Level IIIa NICU cares for premature infants born as early as 24 weeks or those who require specialized intensive care. Our state-of-the-art unit is equipped with the latest advancements in medical technology and, most importantly, expert team members who ensure every baby receives the best possible care for a healthy, happy future.
