SWEARINGEN DESIGN Becky Swearingen, a talented interior designer with Swearingen Design, embarked on a creative journey with the Robbins family and the Hamilton Group to transform their house into a home that truly reflected their unique personality and style. For Becky, her work goes far beyond mere aesthetics; it's about understanding the people behind the project.

"Working with the Robbins, I strived to get to know them as people as well as clients," Becky explains. "Gathering this knowledge helps me make my advance selections. My goal is to design a true reflection of the Robbins' personality and style, plus make the experience enjoyable."

Each room and area in the Robbins' new home was meticulously tailored to serve specific needs and functions. Becky's expertise ensured that the design not only looked stunning but also seamlessly integrated with the family's lifestyle.

Collaborating with the Hamilton Group, Becky, the Robbins, and the builders formed a formidable team. From the conceptual stages to the final completion, they worked together to bring the Robbins' vision to life, leaving no detail untouched.

The result was a home that elevated their living experience in East Texas, capturing the essence of their family and creating a haven they could truly call their own.

JUDSON STEAM ACADEMY: TRANSFORMING EDUCATION & CELEBRATING ACHIEVEMENT

Within the halls of Judson STEAM Academy (JSA), an interesting transformation is underway. The school has not merely adopted the Ron Clark Academy's (RCA) innovative educational approach but has woven it into the very fabric of its identity. JSA, located in Longview ISD, has embraced the Ron Clark model, shifting the focus from mere academics to nurturing the holistic development of its students. Inspired by RCA's 'house' system, where students are assigned to teams, JSA has ushered in a new era of education where achievements are celebrated, and community-building takes center stage.

It started with a few teachers going to a Ron Clark workshop, and now the school is reinvigorated, reenergized, and ready to learn.

RON CLARK AND THE WHOLISTIC APPROACH TO EDUCATION The Ron Clark Academy, situated in Atlanta, Georgia, serves as a beacon for educational institutions worldwide. Going beyond conventional academics, RCA prioritizes a comprehensive approach to education. Key elements of the Ron Clark Academy's approach include innovative teaching methods that incorporate music, dance, drama, and real-life experiences to make learning engaging and memorable. expectations for both academics and behavior, instilling confidence and a strong work ethic in its students. Moreover, RCA actively engages with the local community and collaborates with other schools to share its innovative teaching techniques.

JSA mainly has adopted the ‘house system.’ This means, each student is separated into five different houses, essentially teams, where they work together to earn points, put together a community service project, and more.

At JSA, the school day begins uniquely with a 'leadership development time,' setting a positive tone for students and motivating punctuality. This innovative start to the day embodies the school's commitment to creating a place for everyone, ensuring a sense of belonging for all. Parents are actively involved and have advisory roles within the school, reinforcing the idea that everyone has a place in the JSA community.

The physical environment at JSA enhances the sense of belonging with captivating castle-themed hallways. Teachers have embraced creativity, transforming classrooms into exciting and immersive

spaces, from a diner-themed room with snacks to a murder mystery setup. One teacher notes, "A lot of these kids don't have pride or purpose, and this, for many of them, is giving them a sense of that and a collective purpose."

JSA's commitment to positive energy extends to promoting good behavior through attention and a point system, rather than discipline. The school emphasizes standards over rules, teaching comprehensively in first-period house classes to foster critical thinking. Even in the early stages of implementation, the school saw drastic changes in behavior, attendance, and engagement.

The house system isn't confined to classrooms but permeates every aspect of school life, aligning with Ron Clark's philosophy of nurturing student leaders. All the things, which is what I love because it changes every day.”

So just today I went over to grab a coffee at the little coffee shop over there by the new Jacks Natural Foods, Yukon, and then went through the drive-through for Rusty. I worked from home one day a week and picked up Jacks at the new Jacks. It's beautiful for lunch, and so all that development is awesome. It's really cool to see these new businesses coming in, but also these 50-year-old businesses like Jacks expanding and going on with their services. What the people have been enjoying for so long.”

Lets talk a little bit about your career path. What you did and how did that lead you to where you are?

“I was the kid that wanted the plan and I wanted the plan to happen and life doesn't usually happen like that. And when I look back at the trajectory of my career, every experience, every boss, every coworker that I had played an important role in building in me what I needed to be successful in what I'm doing now and what I'm doing now is my dream job. I absolutely love it. It inspires me, but I started off not sure what I wanted to do with my life and struggling to find a good place that was a good fit for me and so I started in education and technology in the education sphere, and I loved it. So data became kind of my thing and I got to where I got to help a lot of organizations understand their data and processes. Help them to make decisions by organizing and helping them understand their data. All very nerdy stuff. But you know, I tell my kids even now - I have between Rusty and I now have 6 and they're all young adults and we've got lawyers and we've got artists and we've got every different personality they're trying to figure out what they want to do. I have found that it's less about what you're doing and more about the experiences that you're having at each organization, building those soft skills, learning to lead, even just learning how to lead a meeting, all of those things, what you do is important, but I think more important is who you do it with and the opportunities that you take that are presented to you and what you do with those things. In 2020, actually right as COVID was happening, I took the leap and became a small business owner.

And I've never looked back.”

So you own an insurance company here in town. What is 1 myth? If you could debunk something about, being a small business owner, what would that be?
