HOMETOWN AMERICANA
It’ll Do Deli They say that in order to know where you’re going, you need to first know where you come from. We believe there’s some truth to that, so for our first stop, we’re focusing on what food defines American cuisine. And what’s more American than the deli? A local lunch favorite, the deli serves up classic sandwiches that we cannot get enough of. One such local establishment, It’ll Do Deli, is a perennial favorite and regulars attest that it’ll do more than just “do”. You’ll find every sandwich imaginable on the menu at this family-run diner that offers up that hometown Americana feel. If you’re looking to branch out from your typical deli ITLLDODELI.COM
fair, we suggest giving the March Madness a try. Taking two halves of avocado and stuffing them with either chicken or tuna salad and a sprinkling of spices, It’ll Do Deli serves up something truly delicious. This deli’s hours are MondayFriday between 10 am-4 pm.
Papacita’s FOR WHOM THE TACO TOLLS, IT’S FIESTA TIME!
Cinco de Mayo has come and gone, but there’s nothing stopping us from celebrating in true Mexican fashion. The best place to don your sombrero and order a margarita is Papacita’s, a Longview landmark since the’80’s. Locals have hosted graduation parties, reunions, holiday gatherings, and all sorts of events in the roomy events spaces tucked in the upper floors of the restaurant and the owners are honored to be a part of so many people’s lives and celebrations. The open wood mesquite pit gives their signature fajita’s a distinctive and authentic flavor– something that’s hard PAPACITAS.COM
to find elsewhere in Longview. An absolute local favorite is the world-famous seasoned chips and salsa that grace every table and are gobbled up just as fast. The original 1981 menu serves as the basis for what is still served today, but every now and again it’s remixed by kitchen and management staff. Together they experiment with new flavors or draw inspiration from authentic Mexican recipes from the kitchen manager’s childhood to add new and exciting menu items.

THE HISTORY OF
Johnny Cace’s Johnny Cace, the son of Croatian immigrants who had oyster beds in Buras, Louisiana in the early 1900s, brought authentic Creole cooking to Longview, Texas in 1949. That is the year Johnny Cace’s Seafood and Steak House opened in Longview, Texas as the first fine dining restaurant in the region, and over the years it became a beloved local institution for its wide variety of scratchmade Creole classics. Johnny passed the restaurant down to his son Gerard, who in turn passed it to his wife Cathy, who ran it with their daughter Chelsea until it, unfortunately, closed its doors in 2015. But that wasn’t the end of the story: the Cace’s family recipes were so beloved that, at the urging of longtime regular customers, Cathy and Chelsea formed The Cace Kitchen LLC
THECACEKITCHEN.COM
as a continuation of the family’s legacy and opened The Cace Kitchen in 2016.
LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL!
The Cace Kitchen With Mardi Gras fresh on our minds, we’re looking to travel towards the bayous of Louisiana and the bustling streets of New Orleans. Cajun cuisine rules supreme here and you’ll find deep French roots intertwined with local culture. Flavorful crawfish étouffée and gumbo are just a few hallmarks of Cajun fare. In Longview, The Cace Kitchen is now in its 73rd year of cooking authentic Cace creole dishes. Recently, they have been innovating the way that they do business. Regulars can now find their favorite New Orleans-style dishes such as Creole Shrimp Gumbo, Crawfish Étouffée, Crab-Stuffed Shrimp, and Cace’s Famous Garlic Croutons topped with Sharp Cheddar Cheese Spread– now in a convenient grab-and-go format. Now locals can get any of these dishes and more to experience the hearty and heart-warming aspects of Creole cuisine.

SPRINGTIME SPRITZ IN ITALY
Tuscan Pig No tour of Europe would be complete without stopping in Italy. The land of rolling olive groves, romantic vineyards, and sparkling Mediterranean seas offers a wide variety of flavors that have enticed culinary tourists for ages. At the Tuscan Pig, you will find authentic Italian fare from Rodolfo Stefano, an Italian restaurateur originally from the Province of Caserta, just north of Naples. The eclectic dishes of the Tuscan Pig are inspired by Rodolfo’s childhood surrounded by his mother’s carefully simmered sauces. These influences are present in the Tuscan Pig’s handmade lasagnas, made from scratch ragù, alfredo, pink sauce, vegetarian marinara and pesto sauce. The gnocchi pesto topped with Tuscan-style pork is a particular favorite of regulars. The Tuscan Pig embodies the family-run Italian restaurant with Rodolfo serving up tasty dishes that his wife-slash-chef cooks up in the kitchen. Patrons fill up the tables and the team looks on with appreciation as guests take their first bite and delight lights up their faces. On Saturday nights guests can enjoy extra ambiance at the restaurant when James Gosselin performs original arrangements

BIENVENUE EN FRANCE
Scottie’s Bistro If there’s one thing that the French know how to do well, it’s knowing how to eat. And to them, food is an art. Flavors should create a symphony of the senses and inspire discussion. Scotties Bistro located in Longview carries on the Parisian Bistro ideal by featuring inventive dishes. During brunch imagine yourself on a Parisian cobbled street as you enjoy the patio seating and sip on a mimosa. HUNGARY FOR MORE?
Brigitta’s Hungarian Restaurant Continuing our tour of Central Europe, we’ll travel to Hungary and its capital city of Budapest. Hungarians place high cultural importance on their traditional dishes and heritage recipes. So much so that foreign cuisine didn’t fully reach the country until the ’90s. Most dishes are hearty affairs and stews like goulash are popular meals. But there’s one dish that particularly excites tourists. At Brigitta’s Hungarian Restaurant in Kilgore, you’ll find Langos, a traditional Hungarian street food. These pizza-like treats are fried dough coated with a savory garlic butter, slathered with sour cream, and topped with cheese– perfect for a blustery cold day in Europe (or Texas). Historic and tasty, Langos reach back to the medieval days of Hungary, but today you’ll find street vendors serving them up to curious passerby’s. If you like the Langos, you’ll want to try Brigitta’s other traditional dishes flavored with original spices from Szeged, Hungary. FACEBOOK.COM/HUNGARIANRESTAURANT

FRESH BAKED TREATS THAT RISE ABOVE THE REST.
Czech Please Our next stop is The Czech Republic, tucked snugly in the middle of Europe and where tradition runs deep. Here, historical buildings seem untouched by time, and enchanting cobbled streets house bustling bakeries. Inside, you’ll find warm pastries called Koláče. Small, round, and flavorful baked treats filled with either a fruit, cheese, or poppyseed filling. Interestingly, these pastries create confusion among Texans. You see, “koláče” is the Czech word for “kolache” the donut shop staple featuring sausages baked in donut dough. Czech Please, a micro-bakery in New Diana seeks to educate locals about the truth, which is “kolaches are NOT pigs-in-a-blanket!” The truth is that what we call kolaches, are in fact really Klobasniky (a bit complicated, huh?). Both treats originated in the Czech Republic and were brought over by immigrants settling in West Texas. So why did they change the name? They found it wasn’t very catchy and a bit of a mouthful. So CZECHPLEASEETEX.COM
their solution was to call them kolaches as a tribute to their roots. Nowadays Czech Please offers both treats as intended– with their original names. You can choose from a wide variety of kolaches and the lovingly nicknamed “klobs”.

NowLongview.com | Summer | Fall 2022
Building A Forever Home In our newest home design series, we will follow a young family as they work with a design team to build their forever home.
Imagine a charming painted portrait of an idyllic French countryside view featuring a charming villa nestled in a wooded hillside. The land stretches far and wide, with luscious green grass — two young boys chase each other across the hill. This portrait of a calm, quaint, and rustic life is the future that The Hamilton Group Builders and Becky Swearingen of Swearingen Designs have painted for a young East Texas family. Meet Chelsi and Brent Jackson, a young couple in the midst of a new adventure. East Texan born and bred, they met at Texas A&M and have spent over ten years working towards medical careers. The Jacksons have had more than their fair share of experience with fast-paced city living; now, with two young boys, their longing for the small-town atmosphere of East Texas has called them home. Possessing a parcel of land and a vision, they are embarking on a journey towards manifesting their dream home in the hills of Henderson. Enter the design dream team of The Hamilton Group Builders and Becky Swearingen, conducting a two-pronged approach focusing on architectural and interior design. While The Hamilton Group focuses on creating a functional design that’s visually pleasing, Becky works magic to demystify her client’s aesthetic and breathe life into the home through smart design choices.

Interior Design: The Early Stages The first stages of a design process are always exciting and full of new possibilities. In our new home design series, we’ll follow along as Becky and the Jacksons navigate their interior design journey.
STAGE ONE
Access Client Aesthetic
Through one-on-one meetings, Becky is able to suss out the Jackson’s design goals. She believes that interior design flourishes when the designer truly understands their clients; and when there is a personal relationship, you’re guaranteed to create a space that is functional, handsome, and uniquely embodies the client’s lifestyle. Keeping it modern, she urges her clients to use websites such as Houzz and Pinterest for inspiration. Breaking down expectations based on a by-room basis, the scope of the design becomes clearer. It became clear that the Jackson’s were drawn to a French country-style home with a modern twist in the interior, complete with an open floor plan and wide windows overlooking their property. As a young family with two boys, they needed both functional and formal spaces, perfect for an active family and one that loves to host. With a complete understanding of the family’s needs, it’s time to get designing.

A ntebe Southern hospitality flows as freely as sweet tea in this South Carolina-influenced home.
ellum Charm Charm Two families, one home, and a lot of history in between. From the outside the home on the corner of Montclair and Hoyt stands tall and stately, capturing the attention of those who pass by. One wonders about the history of such a house, the memories that it has seen, and the lives of those who have lived there. Indeed, this home is full of history, and it seems its journey has just begun.
Putting Down Roots
In the early ’90s, Anne and Jim Hugman were hard at work building their Architecture and Construction business from the ground up. Prosperity grew, and alongside it so did their family. They found that they required a larger space than the small, detached garage that doubled as their offices offered, and with that realization came a great idea. They would purchase two lots of land on the corner of Montclair and Hoyt and design the perfect home to grow their family in. Surrounded on three sides by a different street, the irregular lot layout provided a few design difficulties. Not one to turn down a challenge, the Hugmans revised their plans to fit the mold. The entrance to the home faces easterly and is complete with a rounded driveway accessible by two of the three streets. While the front facade of the house faces Montclair. This allowed the Hugmans to use the space to create a spacious backyard, complete with room for family-friendly activities.
A self-proclaimed hometown girl, Melanie is also a prominent entrepreneur in Longview. Building her real estate brokerage deep in historic downtown, she dedicates herself to providing traditional southern hospitality both on and off the clock. It was crucial that her new home had ample space for entertaining. The open floor plan of the Montclair home was perfect, complete with a clean flow through the two living spaces and dining room, and the bedrooms tucked away upstairs. Melanie loves the placement of the home on the “peninsula” style lot and was enamored with the unique shape that the Hugmans originally created. The spacious backyard with its distinctive zigzagged fence flanked by budding crepe myrtles and fiery azaleas continues to bring daily joy.
When laying down architectural design ideas, the Hugmans were inspired by family trips to South Carolina. The design that emerged is what they lovingly call “Charleston row house meets the Southern Carolina beaches.” The result was the southern gothic-inspired two-story home, which captured the attention of locals. It quickly became a stop on Longview’s parade of homes.
Southern Antebellum Ambiance
Enticed by these southern vibes, Melanie Northcutt purchased the home in 2013. Growing up, Melanie always visited her Aunt and Uncle’s farm in South Louisiana where she sat on their sprawling screen porch hoping to catch glimpses of sparkling lightning bugs through the Spanish moss with the sound of the dragging of tugboats in the background. The home on Montclair, with its fully screened back porch, pulled on these fond memories and drew her in with its southern charm.

The Home of Entrepreneurial Magic The Hugman’s are not the only notable entrepreneurs who have called this beautiful property home – In 1996 they sold the home to Dr. Steven Littlejohn who built his own practice in Longview, he then sold the property to attorney and future Chief Justice, 6th Court of Appeals, Scott Stevens. In 2007, the home passed into the hands of local realtor Marshall Jackson and he, in turn, sold it to Melanie Northcutt, owner of Sugar Magnolia Properties, in 2013. The Hugman’s couldn’t be prouder of the history of their Montclair home.

Melanie’s Design Style
The home may have been built by the Hugman’s and called home by many a successful person, but Melanie has truly made it her own. Proudly coining her interior design style as “grandmillenial” she bases her design choices on mixing the modern with the antique. She believes in choosing pieces that create a representation of herself in her home. “Our homes should be our retreat, our safe space, and a reflection of who we are,” she says. True to this motto, you’ll find timeless and classic pieces featuring wooden accents, metallics, and velvet gracing the spaces of her home. This cozy home and its charming neighborhood are the full package for those like Melanie who are closely tied to the heart of Longview. “I’ve coined the term “midtown” for this part of town, as we are so centrally located to downtown and uptown (fancy name for Target area). It’s especially nice to be five minutes from my office. My puppy, Chippy, and I love to walk in the neighborhood, and it’s fun to live a street over from some of my best friends.” Melanie says.

It’s no different when we see inspiring entrepreneurs in our community putting out influential initiatives and businesses into the community. We know that entrepreneurship is a risky business, and when that venture pays off both for the individual and the company, then it becomes a societal success. We have found three CEOs who are growing their businesses in Longview and changing the ways that we view entrepreneurship.

Hugman Architecture and Construction Apple, Amazon, Google. If asked what common thread ties these companies, the obvious answer would be that they’re all highlysuccessful companies raking in millions or even billions of dollars a year. Indeed, this is true, but they also share another commonality– they all started out of someone’s garage. Proving that humble beginnings can foster great growth if the right conditions are present. When Hugman Architecture and Construction began their journey in 1988 out of their garage, they were highly motivated to succeed. Over 30 years later, Anne and Jim Hugman have created a wellrespected and successful business serving hundreds of clients and expanding their team to include as many as fourteen employees. Recently, the firm has taken on two long-time employees as partners, changing the name of the firm to H-L-H, Hugman, Lammers & Hawkins. From its inception, the Hugmans have followed the same mission– “to have fun doing a great job for good people”. The firm uses a design-build model that focuses on architectural design, interior design, master planning, cost estimation, and turn-key construction. “We believe good design needs to be cost-conscious, efficient, and lovely,” says Anne. Through the firm’s evolution, they seek to improve the built environment for years to come. In the meantime, we sat down with the Hugmans to get their perspective as entrepreneur veterans in Longview in the hopes to gain some of their magic.

“Why did you choose to set down roots in Longview?” Jim and I both worked for medium and large-sized architectural firms in Dallas when we met. After 5 years of working for other people in the field, we knew that owning our own business was our dream and goal. Once we married in 1986, we chose to move from Dallas to Longview to set down roots and raise our future family. Longview was a much smaller town in 1986. We knew the beauty of East Texas and the wealth of natural resources made Longview ripe for expansion and growth and that is exactly what has happened over the past 36 years. “How did you manage the change from working in Dallas to working in Longview?” When our friends from Dallas & Houston would visit, they would inquire “How do you make a living in such a small city?” Our answer was we show up for work and do the best job we can. “What have you come to love the most about living in Longview?” Longview is the idyllic place to live, work and play and specifically to bring up children, and having our own business gave us the freedom to create our own hours. This allowed us to attend all the kids’ activities and we really could enjoy watching them grow up. The traffic is mild in Longview (most of the time), and it is quite easy to get anywhere in town in 10-15 minutes. We LOVE Longview – it is a beautiful city with the friendliest people anywhere. People you meet are engaging and invite you to help, to serve, and to be involved.
From its inception, the Hugmans have followed the same mission – “to have fun doing a great job for good people”. Anne and Jim Hugman
“The best thing about operating a business in Longview?” We believe young people are encouraged to open their own businesses in Longview and there were so many mentors that stepped up to offer their encouragement and advice when we started our business. Sure, there is competition in the market but there is also a shared joy in watching others succeed. We strive to be mentors to others at every opportunity. “Do you have any advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?” Getting involved in the chamber, the city and any of the many fantastic non-profits is a wonderful way to meet people and foster life-long friendships. Working toward a common goal is the absolute best way to get to know your neighbors and fellow citizens.

“How do you relax and have fun?” We don’t relax! Our adult children constantly tease us about our inability to chill out. When we are in town, we do enjoy cooking out and having friends over for a little water volleyball and we do love to travel whenever we can. The Longview Arboretum hosts a fantastic fall and spring concert series on Thursday nights. That is relaxing! Taking a picnic dinner into the gardens and listening to beautiful music under the great big Texas sky can relax even the most uptight individual.

One gutsy team of women is challenging stereotypes to make their mark on the steel industry in Longview. Strong Women Working in a Strong Industry Pride Metals partners with machine shops, OEMs, and manufacturers within several industries nationwide. They are not only a womanowned company but also women-operated. A bonafide rarity in the steel industry. Five women hold high-profile positions in the company, turning the tables on the status quo. CEO, Trista Roel; Vice President, Alex Montelbano; Director of Finance, Amy Isbell; and Sales Manager, Katy Foster, are the powerful women driving the success of Pride Metals. These ladies have overcome preconceived notions of what women in the steel industry are capable of. “Our biggest challenge is initially being taken seriously by the men we deal with. Although we are all very knowledgeable and have years of experience, as women, we must prove our credibility over and over. But once we do, it’s an eye-opener for those men!” says Roel.
Intense Heat Applied to An Iron Will Created A Steel Resolve Trista Roel, owner of Pride Metals entered the workforce at fifteen serving up sno-cones. At 19 she found herself in the steel industry where she worked while attending school full-time. Even under this pressure, she graduated Summa Cum Laude, forging herself from iron into the strongest steel. Drawing on this resolve, Roel credits this experience as crucial to her decision to open and own her own steel company in the midst of the pandemic. No (Wo)man is an Island But Trista recognizes that she could not have reached such success without the enormous amount of support from both her husband and the amazing team that helped start Pride Metals. Longview’s community of businesses also has helped Roel reach where she is today, “I think we have a great community that strengthens our businesses. Local companies love to support each other here. I’ve also found there to be a substantial number of resources we are given access to.” she says.
