What does this course involve?

Sport has evolved and been revolutionised over many years. From the amount of sport now available to us to the mechanics behind how we move in sport. A-Level PE explores many different aspects of the sporting world. You will step deep into the history of sport and discover the many contemporary issues that surround sport is today’s society. You will begin understand the psychology behind great athletes as well as developing your knowledge and understanding the importance of your body during exercise.

A-level PE provides an excellent pathway into degrees such as Sport Science, Physiotherapy, Nutrition, Physical Education, Sports Business management and much more. You will gain vital academic and social skills through both the written and practical aspects of the course. These include analysing and evaluating performance, independent research skills, academic writing and leading and working together in a team.

How is this course assessed?

Paper 1:

Anatomy and Physiology, Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics (2 hour written paper, 90 marks, 30%) This paper looks at the human body and how the body systems are used during and after exercise. It also goes into detail about the mechanics of the body during activities and the sports themselves.

Paper 2:

Skill Acquisition and Sports Psychology (1 hour written paper, 60 marks, 20%) This paper studies the sporting skills themselves and how we process the information and skills required in sport. It will also focus on the psychology required in sport and what athletes can do with their mind to be the top of their game.

Paper 3:

Sport and Society and Contemporary Issues in Sport (1 hour written paper, 60 marks, 20%) This paper explores sport from pre industrial Britain to the present day. It studies global sporting events such as the Olympics and the impact they have on the world. It also focusses on significant issues sport is experiencing, such as performance enhancing drugs.

Practical Assessment in practical performance or coaching (15%). Spoken coursework on analysing a sports performance (15%).

ENRICHMENT

The PE Department organises university Sports Science lab visits. They also work with local sporting businesses and invite guest speakers.
