Welcome to the 2011/12 season

The London Philharmonic Orchestra is delighted to return to the Congress Theatre with a series of six Sunday afternoon concerts. We have an exciting season ahead with an abundance of talented conductors and soloists and enchanting and inspirational programmes – from an all-Dvoˇrák afternoon featuring his popular Cello Concerto to Vaughan Williams’s meditational masterpiece The Lark Ascending and the seldom-heard Saxophone Concerto by Glazunov. We are proud to continue our tradition of fostering bright young talent. We welcome saxophonist Amy Dickson, winner of the Gold Medal at the Royal Over-Seas League Competition and Symphony Australia Young Performer of the Year; and violinist Fanny Clamagirand, a First Prize winner at the Monte Carlo Violin Masters Competition and International Fritz Kreisler Competition in Vienna.

On 22 April 2012 the internationally renowned conductor Carl Davis makes a very welcome return to the Congress Theatre. Having thrilled audiences in previous seasons he returns with a programme of Beethoven and excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s much-loved Swan Lake to draw the season to a triumphant finale. LISZT Prometheus MOZART Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor, K466 BRAHMS Symphony No. 2

NICHOLAS COLLON conductor FRANCESCO PIEMONTESI piano Overlooking Lake Wörthersee Brahms began to create a symphony that captured all he saw: a clear, light day; the infinite beauty of the sunset; the stillness of night; a peaceful awakening and gratitude for another day. And yet each musician was to play, said Brahms, as if ‘with a ribbon of mourning around their arm.’ Such meeting of glowing melancholy and piercing brightness created something very special. In contrast, the clear structure and discipline of Mozart – evident in his poised D minor Piano Concerto – shines through in perfect contrast to Brahms’s Second Symphony.

ANDREW GOURLAY conductor JACK LIEBECK violin Two of the greatest love stories ever told: Bruch’s is the abstract tale of a violin, weaving and soaring its impassioned way through a warm, surging orchestra in what’s probably the most cherished and heartrending violin concerto ever written. The other is Shakespeare’s story of two lovers doomed by circumstance, told in music of vital colour, character and atmosphere by Prokofiev. We welcome two rising stars, conductor Andrew Gourlay and violinist Jack Liebeck, to the Congress Theatre stage.

DANAIL RACHEV conductor AMY DICKSON saxophone In the 1880s Tchaikovsky at last found solace, freed from the catastrophes that were destroying his private life and carving a tragic path through his career. It shows in the Fifth Symphony. Into its troubled orchestral shadows are thrust bright shafts of melodic optimism as the music seems to ease even its own suffering – a breath of spirituality and calm after the strident force of Prokofiev’s symphonic homage to Haydn and Glazunov’s exotic, atmospheric concerto for the newfangled saxophone. Amy Dickson’s appearance is made possible by the generous support of the Hattori Foundation for Music and the Arts.

As Dvorˇák worked on his new Cello Concerto in 1895, a woman he once loved lay dying. The composer couldn’t speak fully of his affection, for that woman was his sister-in-law Josefina. Instead, Dvorˇák took the tune of her favourite song and cast it as the yearning second theme of his concerto’s slow movement. When Josefina died months later, he re-wrote the movement’s ending – bidding her goodbye with a touching final reference to the song. Here it forms a fitting precursor to the composer’s most vibrant and inventive symphony.

FABIEN GABEL conductor FANNY CLAMAGIRAND violin Vaughan Williams’s lark soars skywards – spiralling, floating and propelling its way towards the firmament with a sense of aspiration and discovery: a lone creature set against the expanse of the skies; a single violin countering the weight of the orchestra. When he saw a flock of sixteen swans taking flight over his Järvenpää villa, Sibelius knew he’d glimpsed the blazing light of optimism amid a sea of dark depression. He thrust the swans’ sure but graceful ascent into the final movement of his Fifth Symphony, which itself soars optimistically upwards, free from its creator’s earthly concerns.

CARL DAVIS conductor MELVYN TAN piano In Beethoven’s Fifth Piano Concerto, the rules changed. Suddenly symphony and concerto were merged. Suddenly the pianist was the hero – able to sway, confront and ultimately win over the orchestral masses pitted against him. Only music as arresting, captivating and strikingly imaginative as that which Tchaikovsky wrote for the ballet Swan Lake could truly make sense of this avian love story, and the composer delivered that and more. Carl Davis wraps up our season at the Congress Theatre with music of inspiring strength and unerring brilliance.

The Congress Theatre has several specially designed seat positions as well as a wheelchair accessible toilet on the ground floor. A companion sitting in a neighbouring seat may be admitted free of charge, via the Essential Companion scheme. Please ask the Box Office for further details.

Congress Theatre is situated on Carlisle Road close to Eastbourne seafront and a short distance from the town centre. We are just 45 minutes from Brighton, 30 minutes from Hastings and Bexhill and 60 minutes from Tunbridge Wells.
