Student life

Joining a society, taking up a new sport or getting involved in a campaign is a great way to learn different skills, become part of university life, and, of course, make new friends.

“Being Head of Station at Verve Radio has allowed me to open up my options and potentially turn a hobby and passion into a career.”

Students’ Union (SU)

Once you’ve enrolled, you become a member of the Students’ Union (SU). The SU is here to support, represent and enrich the lives of our students, and can lobby the University and government to improve opportunities for all students. We know that you’ll have a great time, but if things go wrong on your course, the SU offers free, confidential and non-judgmental advice for all students on complaints, appeals and mitigating circumstances. The SU is also a place to immerse yourself in uni life. We have our own building at our Holloway campus. Here you’ll find our radio studio, social areas, work stations, microwaves and even games and consoles.

You’ll be able to head to the SU on either campus or online to purchase a TOTUM card for student discounts. You’ll also be able to bag exclusive discounts on food, drink and events on campus through our Metcard App and buy SU merchandise such as hoodies.

• Get involved with our student media. The SU has its very own radio and magazine outlets – Verve Media.

You could volunteer as a journalist, graphic designer, DJ, researcher and more. You can also tune in online:

Join a student society – Whether your interests lie in politics, fashion, theatre, human rights, life drawing or something else entirely, there are more than 50 societies to choose from. You can even set up your own.

Take up a team sport – It’s a great way to get fit, have fun and meet new people. Basketball, cheerleading, futsal, cricket, football and volleyball are just a few on offer. Some of our teams also represent us in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) championships and the London Universities Sport Leagues (LUSL).

Get fit – for free – As well as what’s on offer through the SU, the University’s fitness and recreation team also runs an extensive programme of fitness classes with various exercise, holistic and recreational sports including salsa, pilates and boxfit. Our facilities are excellent and include gyms with state-of-the-art cardio equipment, a full-sized basketball court, a dance studio and a fitness studio. We also run a health and wellbeing programme with personal training, mindfulness and yoga classes among others. To top it all off, membership of our gym is currently free for all London Met students and includes access to all classes and the gym.

Food and drink on campus

Our Faitrade Uni has plenty of places for a breakfast pit stop, a hot lunch or a quick caffeine fix on and around campus. We put an emphasis on healthy, nutritious meals that are freshly made on site. Our Holloway campus outlets include The Junction and Highbury Canteen, and at our Aldgate campus you’ll find a café housed inside our beautiful Atrium where you can check out student, staff and guest art works while you eat.

Discounts on campus

We offer discounts on campus through our Metcard app. You can download the app for free to pay for food and drink at outlets across the University and you’ll receive exclusive discounts, loyalty points and offers. You’ll also be kept up to date with our events and special offers.

Entertainment at The Rocket

Our Holloway campus houses The Rocket, our student venue, which alongside being a great daytime café bar and social space, hosts a full programme of entertainment during term time.

Events include club nights, comedy, live music, chocolate tastings, open mic nights, pub quizzes, karaoke and themed parties to name a few. And of course it’s the main spot for all of our legendary Freshers’ Fortnight entertainment, and student society events throughout the year.

“I can sometimes be found singing Redemption Song at The Rocket’s Karaoke Night...” School offices

When you start at London Met, your school office is your first point of contact for any query you may have in person, by telephone, email or chat. You can talk to trained and knowledgeable staff about a host of enquiries relating to areas such as: • enrolment • your academic programme (including timetabling, module selections and results) • ID cards • transcripts • council tax exemption and University letters such as confirmation of enrolment

Your school office acts as a gateway to access the wealth of support services offered by the University such as accommodation or finance support. Whenever you have any questions or concerns about your studies, your wellbeing or any other aspect of your student experience, your school office will be there to help. They will be able to advise the best course of action and direct you to the most appropriate department to help you.

If you’re a postgraduate research student, you’ll join our Graduate School – a supportive environment complete with dedicated facilities for our researchers – read more on page 119.

Careers advice

We have a dedicated team ready to help you fulfil your career ambitions. Our qualified and experienced careers consultants are on hand to offer one-toone meetings to give you personalised support. We have several areas where you can enjoy the beautiful outdoors. Our Holloway campus has a courtyard complete with deck chairs, table tennis and a roof garden. Our Aldgate campus also has a great roof garden with furniture and artworks designed by our students.

We may be urban in location, but we have a green heart – you’ll find 80,000 bees on our roof, a pond complete with ducklings in the spring and a nesting box for our resident pair of peregrine falcons (with live webcam to watch any chicks they produce). You can even join our gardening club and learn how to grow your own.
