Bexley’s proud heritage matters to us, as I am sure it does to you. We know that new homes are needed, but we want to make sure that future development reflects the borough’s unique character and the views of the people who moved here for the chance to enjoy London and the green fields of Kent. Our heritage attractions and our many beautiful parks and open spaces are among the reasons Bexley is such a special place. This summer, I hope you will have the opportunity to visit and enjoy them. I wish you a great summer.

growth that benefits all Exploratory funding for C2E

Help us improve Erith

The Government has committed £4.85m to fund preparations for the extension of Crossrail to Ebbsfleet. It has agreed to fund exploratory work on transport links between Abbey Wood and Ebbsfleet – the route of the extension. Its decision follows four years of campaigning by the Council and its partners in the C2E Campaign. The funding will be used for detailed feasibility, funding and viability work. If approved, C2E would open up more than 10 miles of underused housing land on the London/ Kent border for new homes and employment. “The announcement means that the Government sees the potential of finishing the job of connecting Crossrail to HS1 – between Abbey Wood and Ebbsfleet. This is the critical infrastructure project for the Thames Gateway. The funding means that we can get on with work to realise Crossrail’s true potential for our borough and the whole Thames Gateway. We will waste no time in moving forwards.” Councillor Teresa O’Neill OBE Leader of the Council

Lots of local people have been sharing their views on the proposed improvements set to begin in Erith this year, at various open days and drop-in events. The proposals include an upgrade to the Riverside Gardens, bringing Units 66 and 68 Pier Road into use and securing the long-term future of 70 Pier Road. The projects will be funded by £1.6m the Council secured from the Mayor of London’s Good Growth Fund and match funding from the Council. This funding will also be used to improve the pedestrianised Erith High Street and Pier

CHANGES TO RECYCLING We’ve had lots of interest and positive comments from you about the new wheelie bins that we’re introducing this summer to replace our recycling boxes. We know - because you’ve told us at the roadshows we’ve held recently – that you’re pleased that the new wheelie bins will reduce the amount of windblown litter, and that you want to recycle more. 24,000 of you have been in touch to select your new wheelie bins. 150,000 new wheelie bins need to be produced and we currently expect that these will start to be available from late summer. Once delivery begins it will take 14 weeks to complete.

Don’t worry if you haven’t selected your wheelie bin sizes you don’t need to do anything. Everyone will automatically get a medium sized bluelidded bin for paper and cardboard and a large white-lidded bin for plastic, glass, cans and cartons. We’ll tell you when you’ll get your new bins closer to the delivery date at www.bexley.gov.uk/ recycling-changes When you get your new bins you’ll also receive a leaflet showing the collection dates for each bin and what needs to go in each one.

You can keep your old boxes they will make good storage containers. If you don’t want them we will take them away on the first day that your new white-lidded wheelie bin for plastic, glass, cartons and

cans is collected. We will not be collecting the old boxes after this date. Keep an eye on www. bexley.gov.uk/recyclingchanges - and thank you for recycling!

self-sufficiency

Minding the gap Balancing Bexley’s budget continues to be very challenging, as it is for councils up and down the country. The Council faces a projected budget gap of around £9m next year, increasing to more than £36m by 2022/23. This is largely due to inflation, increasing demand for social care and homelessness, together with changes to the way councils are funded. We have already saved more than £100m since 2010, through savings, by preventing the escalation of care needs, transformation and increased income.

We are working hard to ensure that the budget that is available to us is spent on the things that will make the most difference to the lives of local people. Keeping the Council’s finances in good order and living within our means is essential for us to invest in high quality services. We will be consulting on proposals for next year’s budget later this year. To stay informed, please look out for articles in future issues of the Magazine. If you are online, please sign-up for our regular email news alerts.

“Planning the Council’s budget for the next four years is an opportunity to be forward thinking: to innovate and improve how we work to meet the needs of the borough and our residents. “We want to work with local people and communities and to hear your ideas and comments. We were pleased that our most recent budget consultation generated more than 4,000 responses, but we want even more as we think about the best way to meet the challenges ahead.” Councillor David Leaf, Cabinet Member for Finance

ALCOCK & BROWN

Knights of the Air Next month will see three exciting events to mark the 100-year anniversary of the first successful flight across the Atlantic. The historic flight was made by John Alcock and Arthur Whitten Brown on 14-15 June 1919 in a Vickers ‘Vimy’ plane designed and originally built in the Vickers factory in Crayford. A special free community event on Sunday 21 July at Hall Place & Gardens will be packed full of fun for all ages. Inflatables, traditional fairground games, delicious food stalls and a Guinness World Record model plane flying attempt will all be part of the day. The event, organised by the Alcock and Brown Centenary Project Group (Crayford), will also coincide with the annual local history fair organised by Bexley Civic Society and the monthly Farmer’s Market. A number of local and national sponsors have come on board to help with the community event. The Project Group won National Lottery Heritage Funding earlier this year for educational work with schools and local groups. A VIP visit to Crayford on Tuesday 23 July will see the unveiling of a very special bench made possible by a generous donation from Erith Group and a number of plaques made by students from some of the borough’s primary, secondary and special schools and local supported needs art group M@ke who are based at the Learning and Enterprise College Bexley (LECB). A ‘Those Magnificent Men’ theatre production will take place at the Civic Offices on Thursday 25 July. Tickets are free but spaces are limited so they must be booked. To book and to find out more about all three events visit www.alcockandbrownevents.co.uk The free ‘Knights of the Air’ exhibition at Hall Place will be open until 27 October. September Sounds Coming soon

September Sounds is Bexley’s first multiple venue, mixed genre music festival later this summer aiming to bring new live music into the heart of our Town Centres.

A wide range of artists and bands with a connection to the borough will be performing at town centre venues in Bexleyheath, Erith and Sidcup from the end of August through most of September. September Sounds has been made possible thanks to lead sponsor Bellway Homes, who have generously provided sponsorship of £5,000 to the event organisers, as well as the Bexleyheath and Sidcup BIDs. The Council is working with Graham Corbould Music Event Management, Bexleyheath BID and Sidcup BID, as well as local businesses to put on the event. Obesity can also affect your quality of life and lead to psychological problems. Bexley is working to improve people’s access to healthy food through local shops.

Only 60% of the local people who are eligible are receiving help from the national Healthy Start scheme, which means that £150,000 is not being claimed. Healthy Start provides means-tested financial support to families with children under 4 years old to buy fresh and frozen fruit, vegetables, milk and vitamins. A team made up of staff from the Council, local NHS

colleagues and the BID are working with retailers who currently support the Healthy Start scheme and encourage more to do so. They will also be working to improve the way healthy and sustainable food is offered by local retailers, in line with the ‘Good Food for London’ framework. The work is being carried out with funding from the Mayor of London and the Sidcup Business Improvement District. Have your say on Bexley’s new prevention strategy With the number of people in Bexley aged over 75 set to almost double by 2050, helping older residents to stay fit and healthy is vital. “Preventing the avoidable escalation of people’s needs will benefit us all. It is also essential if public services are going to able to help care appropriately for our growing population.” Dr Anjan Ghosh, Bexley’s Director of Public Health People in Bexley are likely to face 15 to 20 years of ill-health during their life. Sun’s out – don’t get caught out As we all look forward to summer it can be easy to take our eye off home and vehicle security. It’s easy to leave both home and car windows open in the hot weather, tempting an opportunist thief to strike. We all need to remember not to advertise that we are going on holiday and ensure that both home and cars are secure when we do. You can also ask a neighbour to keep an eye on your property, put your bins away after collection and push any post or leaflets through your letterbox. The Bexley Borough Neighbourhood Watch Association will be at events over the summer where they will offer security tips and advice on how not to become a victim of cyber and doorstep crime. They will also have information leaflets and booklets.

Vickers Crayford Works During the First World War, production at Vickers Crayford expanded to include aircraft. In October 1918 a prototype Vickers Vimy bomber was first tested at the Joyce Green Airfield in Dartford. At the time of production, the future of civilian air travel was unclear. Peacetime then brought a sharp decline in orders for aircraft. The number of employees at the Crayford works dwindled from 12,000 to 3,500. Then in March 1919 the 40 completed Vickers Vimys stored in the factory were cleared to make way for new work – making sewing machines. The Vimys, along with the remaining aircraft production, were moved from Crayford to Weybridge in Surrey. It was there that Vickers’ test pilot, John Alcock, set to work to increase the petrol capacity of one of these planes that had been manufactured in Crayford. This work allowed him and his navigator Arthur Whitten Brown to take their historic journey and be the first to cross the Atlantic non-stop in June 1919.

A trip to the theatre Alcock and Brown visited Crayford for the re-opening of the Princesses Theatre, which had been built in the town to provide entertainment for the local Vickers workers. The Princesses Theatre was built in Crayford in 1916. Its location is still visible from its decorated street lamp on Bourne Road, near the junction with Hayward Close. The original building was designed along similar lines to the largest and most luxurious modern cinema theatres of the time. It was opened on 26 July 1916 by Princess Christian and her daughter Princess Helena Victoria, the princesses after whom it is named. In December 1916 the theatre was destroyed by fire. It was re-opened by Prince Albert - later George VI - on 23 July 1919. Alcock and Brown, riding high on a wave of national pride after their tour of celebratory receptions, were surprise guests at the event. There they thanked the Vickers workers and were presented with gold watches

by the Managing Director, Sir Trevor Dawson. Find out more about this year’s Alcock and Brown ‘Knights of the Air’ centenary events at www. alcockandbrownevents.co.uk

British Insulated Callenders Cableworks Band (Bexley Local Studies Callender’s Cables was and Archive Centre collection, PHLS/152/72) formed through the merger of two long-established cable firms: Callender’s Cable & Construction Company Limited and British Insulated Cables. Callender’s started manufacturing insulated cables in the 1880s in Erith and was still active until 2002, when Pirelli closed the site. From 1898 to 1961 Callender’s employees came together to form an amateur brass band. They performed regularly across the south-east of England, including London, and regularly broadcast on BBC radio. The band went on to win 25 brass band competitions.

David Evans silk printers Crayford’s historic connection to the silk trade stretches back to 1826, when a famous inventor, Augustus Applegath, founded the print works which used curved copper plates instead of the traditional handblocks. Seventeen years later, the silk factory became known as David Evans & Co Ltd, it produced the finest silks for famous clients, including Elizabeth Emmanuel, Holland and Holland, David Allen and even Sir Elton John. It closed 158 years later, in 2001.

Vickers of Crayford

A steel production and allied traders company called Vickers moved from Sheffield to Crayford in the late 19th century. Shortly after Vickers Crayford (Bexley Local Studies and Archive Centre collection - PHLS/134/12) their move, they partnered with the famous inventor and Bexley resident Hiram Maxim and switched the firm’s focus to the production of armaments. The modified Vimy aircraft used by Alcock and Brown for the first transatlantic flight was designed and built 100 years ago this year in this very factory. For more on this story see page 9. The factory ran for nearly a century before closing. During this time they manufactured a range of products, including guns, aircrafts, sewing machines and car parts.

In the early 1890s a Fraser and Chalmers and Vickers, Erith (Bexle Studies and Archive Cen successful American tre collection, PHLS/44y Local /36) company specialising in engineering works opened a factory in Fraser Road, Erith. Nearly 30 years on, the factory was bought by the General Electric Company, who kept the original name. By the 1950s they had expanded their operations to cover 34 acres, where they employed more than 3,000 employees. Today the site is home to the Europa Trading Estate.

Flo Studies and Archive ur Mill Workers (Bexley Local Centre collection, PH They joined Jonathan LS/ 135/50) Gaze, a corn merchant, to build a huge, state of the art flour mill. It was a massive building and produced flour on an industrial scale (the trade name ‘Sunblest’ was theirs) and reached its peak during the food crises of WW1. Its decline was rapid, however – a fire destroyed most of it, and it was demolished in 1937, depriving Thames shipping of a valuable navigational aid.
