You may have seen that the Mayor of London is undertaking a consultation into the way the local Police service is delivered.

The proposals include the closure of Bexleyheath Police Station and moving the front counter service to Marlowe House, Sidcup. We want to do all we can to save our local police station. We have until 6 October to have our say on these changes. We value our local police and we know you do too. I’d urge you to take part in this important survey.

Like me, I’m sure you were shocked and saddened by the terrible Grenfell Tower tragedy back in July - we thought you would be interested to know what we’ve been doing to work with our housing associations and the fire brigade to make sure our residents and their properties are safe.

Queen Mary’s Hospital celebrates its centenary this year. This fantastic hospital, that we fought so hard to keep, now benefits from a range of new services including a new cancer unit saving local residents from having to travel long distances for much needed treatment. I’m so proud we were able to play our part in making this happen.

We celebrated the opening of the new inclusive and free Belvedere Beach ready for the summer holidays back in July.

The opening was a great event and a testament to what a determined and imaginative team can do. As the new park is open all year around I hope it will continue to be as busy as it has been since opening its gates.

Going for growth Thank you to everyone who had their say as part of our 10-week consultation on the Council’s draft Growth Strategy.

During the consultation period – which ran from Thursday 18 May to Friday 28 July - the Growth roadshow visited 13 separate locations around the borough, to answer your questions and encourage people to have their say.

Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Growth, Cllr Linda Bailey said; “A wide range of comments were received from residents and a range of other interested groups. All of them will be considered prior to the completion of a revised draft of the Strategy, which will be put forward for adoption by the Council’s Cabinet before the end of the year.”

New development company launched to support growth The Council has established a development company to invest in or develop property opportunities on a commercial basis.

Lower parking charges at three car parks Significantly reduced long stay parking charges will be implemented by October 2017 at three Council car parks near Bexleyheath, Sidcup and Welling rail stations.

The new long stay tariffs for the car parks at Westwood Lane, Welling, Old Farm Avenue, Sidcup and Avenue Road, Bexleyheath, are competitively priced and lower than other nearby station car parks.

The current tariff in the three car parks is

On the buses A successful end to the long battle to get approval for the 96 bus to use a Bluewater bus lane is set to make life easier for people travelling to Darent Valley Hospital.

The breakthrough was achieved after several years of determined lobbying by the Leader of the Council, Cllr Teresa O’Neill OBE. She pressed Transport for London and Kent County Council for agreement for the 96 to use the Fastrack bus lane, which links the shopping centre with the hospital.

TFL is hoping to extend the bus route, which currently runs from Bluewater, through Dartford and Bexleyheath to Woolwich, and is currently in talks with Stagecoach.

Local people are being urged to have their say on the possible closure of Bexleyheath Police Station and the planned move of its front counter service to Marlowe House in Sidcup.

Bexleyheath is one of the police stations that is set to close to the public if a proposal by the Mayor of London goes ahead, as part of his plans to find £400m of savings by 2020.

The Council has shared 6 reasons why it believes the police station and front counter service at Bexleyheath should be saved and will be sending its own response to the Mayor.

“Bexley receives a smaller share of police resources than it deserves and the front counter and Police Station in our main town centre is an important service for local people. Reopening Erith’s iconic Carnegie building Work will begin in the autumn to repair the outer façade, roof and windows, as well as some of the interior of the Carnegie building. It is due to partially re-open to the public in Spring 2018.

London Borough of Bexley has won funding from Historic England for the restoration of the weathervane on top of the building. Local artists will be invited to bid for the contract to restore this over the autumn.

Public consultation on the future of the building was delivered in August, at the Lighthouse, by The Exchange Erith Ltd, the local arts organisation working on the project with the Council. The Exchange recently won some funding from a Department for Communities and Local Government programme which supports innovative community businesses. The aim is to develop the building as a community arts and events space.

Back the Bexley Bid! Local people, residents, partners, local businesses and organisations are being invited to get behind Bexley’s bid to be the London Borough of Culture.

The opportunity, launched earlier this year by the Mayor of London, will see London boroughs bid for more than £1 million of funding to stage a programme of cultural events and initiatives, which will show how arts and culture can be a catalyst for change.

The funding will also go towards developing a sustainable plan to make culture a key part of the winning boroughs’ future, making sure that culture and the arts and all the opportunities they bring – including place-making, skills and employment and community cohesion - are embedded within the fabric of our communities into the long term future.

The winning boroughs will have to illustrate their artistic vision and ambition to provide outstanding cultural initiatives that have the local community

at the centre of their design and delivery. Developing the bid will also help raise the profile of arts in the borough and improve the way the organisations involved work together.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for us as a borough to showcase the wide range of culture we have on offer, and to develop exciting new opportunities for our communities” says Cllr Peter Craske, Bexley’s Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Environment and Leisure.

“Culture isn’t just about history or art: this bid will include culture and the arts in the widest sense.

We aim for there to be something for everyone and will include programmes in dance, theatre, music, heritage, crafts and literature.

“We cannot do this without your help – so are asking the Bexley community to get fully involved in helping us shape our bid, so that our proposal reflects Bexley’s current cultural strengths and

its future aspirations. Our great borough has a real chance of success if we all work together.”

Five year financial plan Investing in a cleaner and greener borough Residents will begin to see environmental improvements across the borough throughout the autumn and winter. Some of the highlights include: • A new deep cleaning service across town centres • £2 million extra spend on road and pavement improvements • New bins in all parks and recreation grounds

• Replacement trees • Reuse and recycling centre refurbishments • Extra support for Friends of Parks community groups These are just some of the improvements set out in the five-year Medium Term Financial Strategy approved earlier this year.

Bexleyheath Improvements – Albion Road & Gravel Hill (A220) Improvement work is progressing on Albion Road between Townley Road and Highland Road, with traffic travelling towards Crayford diverted. Access to the Bexleyheath shopping centre car park is being maintained throughout the works and businesses are open as usual.

In late September work will begin on the school’s side of Gravel Hill and the road layout will change, with traffic moved to the Marriott side, and a temporary roundabout in operation at the Albion Road/ Gravel Hill junction.

The aim is to ensure that Bexleyheath remains a vibrant town centre that continues to grow.

Bexley’s Cabinet approved a five year plan for paying for local services and improvements in July.

The Medium Term Financial Strategy covers day-to-day spending on services for local people and longer-term investment.

More money has been found to improve services that residents believe should be a priority, including street cleaning, plus parks and grounds maintenance.

The Council’s plans for capital investment in the borough include • £120m on developments to provide much-needed housing • £18m on the regeneration of Erith.

• £12m on infrastructure, environment and leisure facilities.

• £36m on roads and transport infrastructure.

Economic growth is already happening in the borough and new investment and developments in the borough are having a positive impact - increasing income from Council Tax, business rates and rental and investment income. The council is also increasing the income it raises through selling services.

The Council continues to face a range of spending pressures, including the cost of caring for a growing number of elderly people, vulnerable young people, children with special educational needs and rising homelessness.

On the beach Belvedere Beach is the name of the new seaside themed playground on Woolwich Road.

It features a range of play equipment of different textures, colours, shapes and sounds, designed to stimulate children’s senses. It even has a ground access roundabout which all children can use, including

wheelchair users. Families and children can now stay even longer, thanks to the on site facilities and kiosk selling refreshments.

The park opened in July this year and has since been host to a day of free face painting and a magic show. It will continue to be open all year round and is completely free to use.

Cancer care closer to home Guy’s Cancer at Queen Mary’s Hospital - Guy’s and St Thomas’ new cancer centre in Sidcup - opened its doors to patients for the first time in May.

Patients living in Bexley and outer south east London will now be able to have most of their radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment nearer to where they live.

Most patients living locally will no longer have to travel into central London for radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Limited chemotherapy was already provided at Queen Mary’s, but more patients are now able to have this treatment locally - and radiotherapy is available in the area for the first time.

Guy’s Cancer at QMH includes not only two new linear accelerator machines for radiotherapy treatment and 14 chemotherapy treatment chairs, but also a new Dimbleby Macmillan Support Centre, an information and supportive care service for cancer patients and their families.

New project for Bexley carers Carers Trust has launched a new programme to help unpaid carers in Bexley to access work, training and education.

The Working for Carers programme is a £2 million London-wide project, jointly funded by the Big Lottery Fund and the European Social Fund. It’s designed to encourage local employers to adopt carer-friendly policies and recognise the benefits of employing carers.

The new programme will also help carers in

London over the age of 25 to develop a personal plan for their future. They will have free access to oneto-one support, training and peer support, all aimed at increasing their selfesteem, skills and overall employability.

All change for travel Changes are being made to the Council’s travel assistance scheme for children and young people with special educational needs or disabilities.

The changes give parents for children and young people, who meet the eligibility criteria the opportunity to apply for a Personal Travel Assistance Budget, use organised pick-up points and to take part in travel training or share transport.

The new scheme has already been piloted by some children and parents and will be rolled out to other families across the borough. Any parent or carers who will be involved in the roll out will be consulted and no one will have changes made to their service without notice.

Fire safety in Bexley The tragic incident at Grenfell Tower, West London brought into focus the importance of fire safety.

The terrible fire that claimed 87 lives sent shockwaves across the country. Bexley’s local emergency services attended the scene or were on hand to provide support afterwards.

Trained members of the Council’s emergency staff provided support in rest centres or control rooms, while other teams volunteered their services in the days and weeks following the fire.

After the fire the Council formed a Fire Safety Task Force that brought together officers from the London Fire Brigade and the borough’s three major social housing providers: Peabody, Orbit and London & Quadrant.

The Task Force’s first action was to quickly get an accurate and up-to-date picture of all high-rise buildings in the borough.

There are 36 high-rise buildings in Bexley managed by Peabody and Orbit. They were able to confirm that none of these have the aluminium type cladding associated with Grenfell Tower.

The associations also carried out extra fire safety inspections and confirmed that all of these high rise buildings have current fire risk inspection assessments.

London and Quadrant does not have any high rise accommodation in Bexley.

The Fire Safety Task Force also gathered information on other types of property, including privately-owned residential properties, schools, residential and other care facilities, plus commercial buildings.

All the borough’s community schools were contacted and checks made that they have fire risk assessments and have made the required returns to government. They have also been given support on the management of fire risks. Similar contact has been made with local care establishments.

Fire safety advice Working with the Fire Brigade the Task Force have developed an online fire safety guide for anyone living in flats in the borough who may have concerns following the Grenfell fire.

Parking safely We all know that time is of the essence when it comes to an emergency. The London Fire Brigade have produced a flyer to remind residents about the importance of parking sensibly to avoid blocking their access.

They are urging drivers to think twice before leaving their car parked on a busy narrow street and to make sure they leave enough room, in case a fire engine or ambulance needs to get through urgently.

caring Working with partners to improve health & social care Earlier this year Bexley Care, the local organisation that brings together health and adult social care in the borough was officially launched. Bexley Care is a partnership between the Council and Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust and will result in more joined up care and support, helping residents to remain independent and reducing the need for admission to hospital.

Helping residents to return home from hospital sooner London Borough of Bexley, in partnership with various NHS Trusts, is delivering a new, innovative approach to patient care, where health and adult social care professionals work together to enable residents to return home sooner from hospital.

The ‘Discharge to Assess’ approach is being delivered in Queen Elizabeth, Darent Valley and Princess Royal University hospitals. It means patients who are well enough to return home but may need some social care support are discharged home with a temporary care package in place. They are then visited

at home for the health and social care assessments to be completed and longer term support arranged if necessary. They no longer have to wait in hospitals for these assessments, they are completed in the comfort of their own homes.

Bexley is one of the first local authorities to deliver this approach to all patients over 18 who are admitted to hospital and may require social care support, even in the most complex cases, when patients may require 24 hour care. NHS England are using Bexley’s discharge to assess approach as a best practice example across the country.

As the magazine went to print the Discharge to Assess Team were celebrating the scheme being shortlisted for a national award by the prestigious Health Services Journal in the ‘Improved Partnerships between Health and Local Government’ category.

The winners of the award will be announced on 22 November.

Connect Care From autumn 2017 the Connect Care web portal will be up and running, allowing adult social care staff to see some NHS health information for those adult residents who are receiving services from the Council.

Connect Care is a joint arrangement with NHS bodies such as local hospitals and GPs, who will be able to access some of the relevant social care information held by the Council.

The aim is to deliver more efficient health and social care services to residents by providing relevant information to staff at the point of care. To help in delivering care, we will now use the NHS Number of those residents who receive care services.

Consultation on Bexley’s Draft Adult Autism Strategy Bexley’s Autism Partnership Board is currently consulting on its Draft Adult Autism Strategy for the Borough.

It sets out the actions the partnership is planning to take to improve existing arrangements for support for adults with autism.

Bexley’s Learning and Enterprise College This month saw the launch of the new Learning and Enterprise College Bexley.

It brings together the former Learning Centre Bexley and Resources Plus and is the Council’s new skills, learning and recruitment provider.

Cabinet Member for Education, Cllr John Fuller said: “Bringing together these two entities makes perfect sense.

The goal of both has always been to make a real difference to people’s lives, whether through learning, training or job opportunities.

Together they will focus on how they can help people to improve and acquire new skills and interests, or start or advance a career through apprenticeships, vocational courses, careers advice and employment support.”

The college also runs courses for students with learning disabilities that focus on essential life skills for independent living, allowing progress into employment through supported internships.

clean & green Adopt a patch of gardening paradise Bexley residents who have green fingers but do not own their own gardening space can now ‘adopt’ a flower bed at Danson Park in Bexleyheath through volunteering with the Friends of the Shuttle.

This volunteer group is currently working to restore the Old English Garden at the park and needs extra support. There are 18 beds in total, 10 small beds ideal for an individual or a couple, plus eight slightly larger

beds which may appeal to a community group.

Volunteers meet in the garden opposite Danson House every Thursday at 10am until 1pm.

Tools, gloves, kneeling pads, coffee, tea and biscuits are provided.

Ridgeway path reopens The newly enhanced path provides a more convenient and safe route between Cory Bridge and Sporting Club Thamesmead.

Some areas have remained closed and fenced off to construct a new access ramp.

Each week the group run to a location in the borough and do a good deed that will benefit our community. The deeds take a miximum of 40 minutes. After they are done, members run back, with a little fitness training thrown in. They run an average of 5K. All abilities are welcome and no-one is left behind!

Group members also take on mission runs.

These are for two or four people and include helping someone with small jobs they are unable to do themselves, such as tidying a garden, or retrieving Christmas decorations from the loft.

New season at Hall Place Hall Place is looking forward to some exciting times in the gardens. The team have already spruced up the Mediterranean garden and started works on the model gardens.

During Autumn you will see improvements to the rock garden as well as work taking place around the sunken and enclosed gardens. The team will also

be hard at work over the winter months making sure everything is at its best for next spring.

There are also set to be some exciting art installations soon appearing in the gardens thanks to ‘Centrepieces’ - the art based mental health charity that work out of at Hall Place.

Summer at Erith Lighthouse The impressive pink and blue pop-up Erith Lighthouse at Riverside Gardens opened for business in August with a free garden party.

The Mayor of Bexley, Cllr Peter Reader, officially opened the Lighthouse in front of an audience who had come out to enjoy Riverside Gardens, the summery musical sounds, the giant garden games and the sunshine!

The launch was the beginning of a programme of special events to explore and celebrate Erith’s unique riverside London setting.

Erith Lighthouse was commissioned by the

London Borough of Bexley and funded by the Mayor of London as part of Bexley’s Greater Erith Programme, a town centre regeneration programme that is enabling the creation of an active town centre that makes the most of Erith’s unique setting by the River Thames. The Lighthouse moved to the Pier from 7 - 24 September for more fine dining and a special art installation sponsored by Orbit and Wates Residential.

Black donors urgently needed Around 40,000 extra black donors are needed to meet growing demand for a special subtype of blood.

Sickle cell disease is one of the fastest growing genetic blood disorders. In the UK, it’s common in people with an African or Caribbean background. Currently, around 15,000 people have the disease and over 300 babies are born each year with the condition.

To get the best treatment, patients need closely matched blood, which is most likely to

come from someone with the same ethnicity.

This is why the NHS needs 40,000 new black donors.

They also need to increase the consent rate for organ donation from ethnic minority groups.

There are five venues Bexley, Bexleyheath, Erith, Sidcup and Welling - where Bexley residents can give blood.

Giving you a voice, keeping you informed The Bexley Safer Neighbourhoods Board is a group of volunteers from organisations such as Neighbourhood Watch, London Fire Brigade Bexley, BVSC, Victim Support, council representatives and local business owners who represent the whole community and hold the police to account in the borough.

Bexley SNB provides a public forum by holding public meetings, where local people and groups can have direct access to senior officers from the police, the council and other statutory agencies and have constructive discussion and debate about policing, crime and community safety issues in the borough.

Bexley SNB have also funded

projects in schools and the community on subjects that raise awareness of current crime issues and help to reduce and prevent crime.

Neighbourhood Watch summer round-up Bexley Borough Neighbourhood Watch volunteers have been busy over the summer with stands at the Erith Fun Day and Slade Green Community Day. We also attended the Queen Mary’s Hospital Family Fun Day with police teams to talk about our Hospital Watch scheme and plans for its expansion.

We also worked to reduce a shoplifting outbreak by

recruiting with local police in Belvedere for our Shopwatch scheme. We have also been liaising with partners in Northumberland Heath, where we have found a real improvement in levels of antisocial behaviour.

10th anniversary of Bexley’s street pastors Bexleyheath’s volunteer street pastors are celebrating providing their caring service for 10 years.

Their trained volunteers attend local churches and usually patrol from 10pm to 2am on a Friday night to care for, listen to and help people who are out on the streets.

They are led by local coordinator Cathy Walford, and work with support from local churches and community

groups, in partnership with the police, council and other agencies.

Queen Mary’s Hospital celebrations Queen Mary’s Hospital (QMH) held a special ‘Family Fun and Open Day’ to celebrate its centenary earlier this month (9 September).

The Queen’s Hospital was opened in 1917 and initially provided pioneering plastic surgery to First World War soldiers. It was renamed Queen Mary’s Hospital in 1930.

It’s not worth gambling on a second-hand car seat Parents are urged not to take a gamble by purchasing second-hand car seats from charity shops or other second-hand sales outlets.

It is impossible to know for certain if the used car seat has ever been in a collision.

There may be little or no visible damage but there could well be substantial internal damage, making it dangerous in the event of a collision or an emergency stop.

Missing instruction booklets often also lead to second-hand seats being incorrectly fitted.

Charities and second-hand dealers across the borough have recently been contacted and urged to help keep children safe by not selling used car seats through their outlets.

New pub restaurant for local landmark Sidcup’s renewal received a further boost this summer when Marston’s bought the leasehold interest in Sidcup Place.

Marston’s are proposing to substantially refurbish the building and operate it as one of their popular Rotisserie pub restaurants.

Marston’s is still developing its plans for the premises and the refurbishment is unlikely to take place until the autumn, or possibly early next year.

Southmere Village wins design award Southmere Village won the Regeneration Award 2017 at the Housing Design Awards earlier this year.

The design was picked for the scheme’s layout, private balconies, raised gardens and recessed courtyards, together with its valuable shared open space for residents.

Created by architects Proctor and Matthews and Mecanoo, Southmere Village will be the first phase of the Abbey Wood and South Thamesmead Housing Zone development to be delivered by Peabody in South Thamesmead.

Blackfen Town Centre Improvements Work to improve the public areas along Gloucester Parade and at the junction of Blackfen Road and Days Lane in Blackfen is complete.

Trees will be planted in late September, when the weather is cooler. The project has regenerated the shopping area by improving the layout and increasing pedestrian and vehicle access, to maximise potential trade and make the area more attractive for residents.

Regularised parking has been introduced on the service road in front of the shops on Gloucester Parade, to ensure a regular turnover of spaces.

Erith Improvement works Improvement work will begin in and around Erith station this autumn and will include redesigning the public space to create better pedestrian, cycling and vehicle access.

The public space around the station entrance will be enhanced, with better signage and plants making the area more attractive for the local community. Public seating and cycle stands will also be added.

The improvements are funded by London Borough of Bexley in partnership with TfL and the Mayor of London. The aim is to create an active town centre that makes the most of Erith’s unique setting by the River Thames.

Erith’s travelling library

At the Council Library Committee meeting on 3 October 1932, the need for a “Travelling Library Van to meet the urgent needs of borrowers in the outlying parts of the district” was discussed.

The resulting vehicle came to be possibly the first purposebuilt travelling library vehicle in the country.

The plans for the vehicle show the details of the proposed travelling library, to be mounted on a 2-ton 6-wheel Fordson chassis.

The body measured 24’ 8” in length, was 7’ 1” wide and 6’ 9” in height above the driving axles. Shelving was provided along three sides of the vehicle, with an attendant’s desk at the rear. Folding steps and rear doors

provided access from ground level. A sliding sun roof and roof lights were provided, with linoleum flooring.

The plans state that “All lights and heaters are arranged for plugging in to the Council’s mains at suitable points fixed for this purpose”. Council minutes show that on 10 January 1933, a tender from WG Hampton was accepted, to build and deliver the travelling library vehicle at a total cost of £685 18s 10d!

The vehicle entered into service on 24 April 1933.

Throughout 1933 there were various repairs and modifications, including the fitting of springs to provide automatic closing of the rear doors.

Amazingly, the vehicle still survives as part of the Science Museum’s reserve collection.

Archive Team recognition Bexley’s Local Studies and Archive Centre has been awarded Archive Service Accreditation.

Achieving accredited status demonstrates that Bexley’s service has met clearly defined national standards relating to management and resourcing, the care of its unique collections and what it offers to its wide range of users.

Bexley Local Studies and Archives is based at the Central Library in Bexleyheath and collects, preserves and makes available current and historic materials.

Get your flu jab GPs, nurses and pharmacists in Bexley are urging those eligible for a free flu jab to get vaccinated and stay well this winter Flu occurs every year and is a highly infectious disease with symptoms that come on very quickly. Colds are much less serious and usually start gradually with a stuffy or runny nose and a sore throat. A bad bout of flu can be much worse than a heavy cold.

The most common symptoms of flu are fever, chills, headache, aches and pains in the joints and muscles, and extreme tiredness. Healthy individuals usually recover within two to seven days, but for some, the disease can lead to hospitalisation, permanent disability or even death.

Dr Sid Deshmukh, a GP at Sidcup Medical Centre and chair of NHS Bexley Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), is encouraging those eligible for a free flu jab to get vaccinated: “All GP practices in Bexley invite those who are recommended to have the flu vaccine to an appointment to get vaccinated. If you receive your invitation, don’t delay, attend and make sure you protect yourself and your family from seasonal flu.

“This year, the flu vaccine is being offered to all children aged two and three, children in reception class and in school years one to four. By offering the flu vaccination to as many children as possible in the autumn, we help to protect them in time for the winter. As well as protecting these vaccinated children, the infection is then less able to spread, helping to protect their brothers and sisters and other family members and friends, including their parents and grandparents.”

Nurse practitioner and nurse manager at Lakeside Medical Practice in Thamesmead, Teresa Orford, said: “Don’t forget, the flu vaccination for healthy children doesn’t involve any needles, it’s a nasal spray. This is great for children because it just involves a quick, painless squirt up each nostril.

“The nasal vaccine provides good protection against flu, particularly in young children, and it also reduces the risk to, for example, a baby brother or sister who is too young to be vaccinated, as well as other family members.”

Children aged two and three will be given the vaccination at their general practice usually by the practice nurse. All children in reception and school years one to four in Bexley will be offered the flu vaccine at school.

Nurse Teresa continued: “The nasal vaccination works well and last year, stopped lots of children getting flurelated illnesses. Don’t wait until there is an outbreak this winter; get yours or your children’s free flu jab now.”

Local pharmacist Bipin Patel from the Broadway Pharmacy in Bexleyheath said: “Most pharmacies in Bexley offer the flu vaccine. No appointment is necessary, you’ll just be asked a few questions to see if you are eligible and your flu jab will be administered by a qualified pharmacist in the privacy of a consultation room.

“Doctors, nurses and pharmacists in Bexley are working together to vaccinate those eligible for the flu jab. In particular we are urging residents aged 65 and over to get the flu jab because they are at greater risk of serious complications from the flu compared with young, healthy adults because human immune defences become weaker with age. Even if you’ve had the flu jab before, it’s important to get it again because the type of virus in circulation changes every year and so the vaccine changes too.”

The flu vaccination for pregnant women All pregnant women should have the flu vaccine to protect themselves and their babies. The flu vaccine can be given safely at any stage of pregnancy, from conception onwards.

Pregnant women benefit from the flu vaccine because it will: • reduce their risk of serious complications such as pneumonia, particularly in the later stages of pregnancy • reduce the risk of miscarriage or having a baby born too soon or with a low birth weight • help protect their baby who will continue to have some immunity to flu during the first few months of its life • reduce the chance of the mother passing the infection to her new baby

Summary of those who are recommended to have the free flu vaccine • everyone aged 65 and over • everyone under 65 years of age who has a medical condition such as: o heart problems o a chest complaint or breathing difficulties, including bronchitis, emphysema or severe asthma o a kidney disease o lowered immunity due to disease or treatment (such as steroid medication or cancer treatment) o liver disease o had a stroke or a transient ischaemic attack (TIA) o diabetes o a neurological condition such as multiple sclerosis (MS), cerebral palsy or learning disability o a problem with your spleen eg sickle cell disease or you have had your spleen removed o are seriously overweight • all pregnant women, at any stage of pregnancy • all two and three year old children • all children in school years reception and one to four • everyone living in a residential or nursing home • everyone who cares for an older or disabled person • household contacts of anyone who is immunocompromised • all frontline health and social care workers
