Keeping your place tip-top

Major repairs? Leave ‘em to the pros your landlord has you covered. For daily upkeep, make sure to change lightbulbs, test smoke alarms, clean mould, and ensure proper ventilation and heating.

Top tips to beat condensation and mould

Maintain a comfortable temperature and ensure good airflow (pop open the windows and let that cool breeze in!)

Tackle mould quickly with just a wipe of warm, soapy water.

Ventilate your bathroom during and after showers. This means turning your extractor fan on, or opening a window.

Get your clothes drying outside (goodbye dryer bill) or in a well-ventilated space.

Use the kitchen extractor fan while cooking.

Safeguard your stuff: your insurance

Your landlord’s insurance doesn’t cover your belongings. We recommend insuring your items and getting tenant liability cover to protect your deposit from accidental damage. Most policies also cover emergency accommodation. Pop us a message on live chat for provider recommendations.

House rules

Smooth sailing in shared living means clear communication and agreed-upon rules. Start a household WhatsApp group to keep everyone in the loop. Some things to know:

Quiet hours: 10pm to 7am (pop in your earphones to carry on listening to your fave song)

Keep the front and rear gardens tidy.

Maintain clean spaces, especially in shared areas.

If you’re not on the bills-inclusive package, just make sure to set up accounts for gas, electric, water, broadband, and a TV Licence. Here’s what you need to do:

Council tax

If all tenants are full-time students, say goodbye to council tax! All you need to do is register with Brighton & Hove City Council for council tax exemption. Visit brighton-hove.gov.uk and click on ‘Council Tax’ to register.
