How To Be in the Mirror Journalism, the school newspaper/magazine,

called newszine, is a class for applied arts credit.

There are a few types of names or descriptions you will hear when people talk about The Mirror. But what exactly is The Mirror? According to Danelle Taylor-Johnston, “The Mirror is a newszine and a newscast that presents and tells the stories of the community and school.”

Taylor Johnston decided to spend some time in class to ask how we, The Mirror staff, would define the Mirror. Lucina Mangoba (12), writer, started by saying “It’s the school newspaper.”

Lunden Spencer (12), videographer, added, “It’s fun!”

Our Mirror Editor-and-Chief, Dani Mejia, (12) said, “It’s creative, the creativity in it is a good way to express it [The Mirror].”

Michael Lowe (12), Mirror photographer and graphic designer, explained that it is work, but the type of work you can enjoy when you have your finished product.

Rachel Nyiradi (12), Mirror writer, added on to Lowe’s statement by explaining that the homework doesn’t feel like regular homework.

Mejia explained to the class that The Mirror is a good class for people that like to interact with others. A lot of work involves interviewing, which is something you would do with the student’s faceto-face.

Marisa Sugiono (12), Mirror writer, added to Mejia’s statement and explains that The Mirror is also a great chance for you to engage in conversation with people you don’t really talk to. It almost acts like an icebreaker.

school, she felt as if she never did anything for the school; so being apart of The Mirror was a good chance for her to be able to give back.

If you are still interested after learning what The Mirror is, the next step is how to be apart of the Mirror. According to Taylor Johnston, these are the few steps you must follow to apply to The Mirror. First, you should pick up an application from Ms. Taylor Johnston. The application due date is May 18, 2017. When you get your application you should fill out what position you would like to perform in your one or two semesters being apart of The Mirror. You will need to get two recommendations, one from your English teacher, as well as one teacher of your choice. Then, write an application letter and have decent GPA. Taylor Johnston said, “The Mirror is open to everyone grades 9-12 who are recommended by teachers, have good leadership skills, meet deadlines and love telling stories.”

Lastly, to be apart of The Mirror, Ms. Taylor Johnston said, “You have to have an interest and want to learn; I’ll teach you how to go beyond the basics.”

To paraphrase, meeting the deadlines is very crucial because throughout the entire year there are six issues sent out, three issues per semester.

In order to get all The Mirrors out, deadlines must be met for the dates that the editor and Ms. Taylor Johnston set up. The larger the staff, the better because there is a lot to do to create an issue in the span of about four to five weeks. Mejia says, “I suggest you should join if you like working with people, like responsibilities over projects, and if you like the news. I think it’s a unique experience for those who want to pursue something in art and a good way to express your creativity in whatever form of art you like.”

Student Feature Marc Ejurango

“Performance itself is something that my sister and I have been doing for mostly all of our lives.

Performance at General Conference was something else,” says Marc Ejurango (9). Many people assume that at a small private school like Loma Linda Academy (LLA), everyone knows each other. But how well do you really know your classmates? Take Ejurango for instance. Many may not know that he was born and raised in Thailand for thirteen years despite being full Filipino, or that he has a sister who is five years older than him who goes by the nickname of “Sweety.” But most importantly, many may not know how he loves to sing and is able to share his talents through ministry.

Ejurango was only two years old when he started singing, or as he puts it, “mumbled on stage,” aspiring to be like his older sister. It was not long before performing with his sister at local churches around

Thailand became the norm for them. In 2015, he and his sister were invited by the General Conference (a conference where Seventh-day Adventists come from around the world to attend) to perform, which prompted his parents to ask them,“What would you think about living in the United States?”

Ejurango admits that he agreed to come the States with the intention of going back to Thailand. He spent his thirteenth birthday on an eighteen-hour flight coming to the US, but after a few months in the US, he knew something was up. Ejurango confronted his parents by asking them when they were going home, who in return responded with, “We’re not going home.”

His initial reaction was to ask himself, “Why did I agree to come here in the first place?” Not only had he given all his precious belongings to the tribal kids back in Thailand, but he had also left behind all his friends.

He recalls thinking, “What is this? I have no friends!”

One thing that kept him from thinking such thoughts was going around, performing with his sister. Ejurango’s parents were missionaries and one of their original intentions for coming to America was to help raise funds for the only Thailand Adventist Mission. He says his parents thought coming to the States would be beneficial due to the exchange rate of dollars to Thai currency, or baht, was really high. They were able to raise funds by going around Southern California and doing concerts, asking for donations. All the money that is raised is sent directly to the Thai SDA Church through Ejurango’s mom, who then transfers the money to the mission in Thailand, distributing the money to where it needs to go.

Despite what seemed like a busy schedule, Ejurango still had a lot of down time. He confesses that for half a year it felt as if he was doing nothing but sitting in front of the TV watching re-runs of Teen Titans and doing chores.

Towards the end of summer, his parents bought him a laptop and enrolled him into online schooling in order to keep him from falling behind on his studies. It kept him busy for a while, but eventually he found himself getting bored and distracted. Online schooling was not fulfilling enough because he craved to get out of his house and interact with real people. So, Ejurango begged his parents to put him into a standard school.

school was not so simple. He had to consider price and safety. Looking for a faith-based school, Ejurango first contemplated going to Redlands Adventist Academy (RAA) due to its close proximity to his home. RAA was full, leading Ejurango to stumbling across LLA. Paying for LLA was not easy, but Ejurango says “We just pray that God will provide us with something to eat, money to pay for LLA, and things just happen the way they happen. All of God’s doing.”

At the beginning of this school year, he entered as a freshman. Ejurango said he has no regrets coming to LLA. He was able to find many similarities to his old school, Ekamai International School, due to their similar schooling system. He describes LLA as “another family of my own, except bigger, more diverse, and not necessarily related by blood.” During his time here, Ejurango has found ways to channel his passion for music through school groups such as Pro Musica and Symphony Orchestra.

After being forced to grow accustomed to the changes in his life, Ejurango reflects by saying, “Being able to play an instrument or sing, to let out your feelings became one of the only things I held on to when I had nothing left to do. It has helped me gain a better patience with myself, be a little bit more calm and collected, and helped me to relax my mind after stressing it out.”

LLA Art Exhibition

Unlike any other year before, an art exhibit took place during the Alumni Weekend on April 8. Every year, Loma Linda Academy (LLA) hosts an Alumni Weekend where there is a church service, alumni games, and other fun events. The art exhibit was another exciting event that some of the students and teachers at LLA added to the fun-filled weekend.

The art exhibit included paintings, drawings, photography, and metal sculptures displayed inside the CMC and art also displayed throughout the bottom floor of the student services building. There were also hors d’oeuvres created and served by culinary arts and live music performed by Dara Salamante (12) and three alumni (Alyssa Cosejo, Madison Oliver, Tony Hernandez). There were masterpieces that varied from photographs to sculptures by alumni as well as artwork by current students.

Many faculty and students were involved in planning this event. Sara Gillespie, art club sponsor, and Danelle Taylor Johnston, photo club sponsor, sponsored the art gallery while Blake Walker, Jayden

Antonio-Valdez, and Shantel Guzman of the photo club, and Rachel Specht and Bella Nelson of the art club were the student leaders. After they got their initial group together, they decided to have JO Cordero in charge of the music, Lori Holm and her culinary class in charge of the food, and Gene Oswald and his TIE class in charge of making the boards that displayed some of the art. “We just wanted to kinda get as many departments as we could with the planning process to get their perspective,” Blake Walker (12) stated.

All of the students and sponsors who were involved in the planning process submitted artwork. Jayden Antonio-Valdez (11) chose to display his photograph, Looking Back. He states, “It’s a ladybug walking down a stick with someone holding it. Everything in the background is blurred out and your eye is completely drawn to the bright red of the ladybug. I just wanted to [photograph] something that [people are] already interested in, such as holding ladybugs on their fingers, but I wanted to get it from a different perspective.

of the ladybug. So it’s almost like you’re equal to it.”

Gillespie displayed a painting named Vespa. “We have this little Italian Greyhound that’s a key part of our family, and my husband really really loves her.

So for his birthday last year I decided I was going to surprise him with a painting of her. I had to work really hard to try to get a picture of her when she would look at me to the camera instead of running to me, and I painted it at school so he didn’t even know anything about it. It hangs over our mantle at our house.”

There were also many others that were not included in the planning process that submitted artwork. Kevin Bartolome (12) submitted a photograph named Silent Joy. “It’s a picture of my dad as a silhouette as the sun is coming up and [his] arms are outstretched. The way that the photo got set up I really enjoyed it. It really makes me happy that I could get my family to be a part of this and honestly I’m just glad I got to submit to the art gallery. It was an awesome opportunity that I [got to] share the art gallery with so many other talented artists with their art on display as well. It

only goes up from here and I am going to continue to improve and work on improving my art,” Kevin states.

Diana Lim (11) also submitted artwork, specifically a painting named Pumpkin Pie. It is a painting of a pumpkin pie that has interesting details in it. “What I did was mix the clay with the paint to make it look like it’s popping out; to make it look more realistic. It’s something I’ve never tried before and it was really cool,” Diana states.

Planning and holding an art exhibit just once is not what most, if any, of the leaders had in mind. Gillespie states, “I would love to see a place on campus where art is permanently displayed. I don’t know if that’s practical or not, but definitely for the future of the art show I want to see more and more students submitting and maybe having the art show extend for a period of time so that people who don’t make it to the reception could maybe view it during the week or something at school. It would also be cool to have junior high and elementary art too.” We can expect to see the art exhibit expand into something even greater in the future!

Symphonic Orchestra Tours Hawaii By: Marisa Sugiono

D

uring spring break (March 27-31), the Loma Linda Academy Symphonic Orchestra traveled to Hawaii to perform for several Seventh-Day Adventist churches such as the Honolulu Japanese SDA Church and Honolulu Fil-Am SDA Church. They traveled through Oahu and performed classical pieces from composers such as Beethoven, Haydn, and Elgar. They also formed into specific groups to play more sacred music such as hymns. Emily Pangalila (12), a violin player for the group, says they also had the opportunity to attend a workshop with the conductor from the University of Hawaii. She says this tour was different from Symphonic Band tours since Symphonic Orchestra has fewer people and a broader spectrum of students ranging from junior high to college when compared to band. A few of her memorable moments were, “Some of the places we visited [were] Pearl Harbor and the Polynesian Cultural Center. We also went on a sunset dinner cruise and went hiking and snorkeling. I think what was most memorable [moment] to me was connecting with Hawaiian culture because I love Polynesian culture and bonding with orchestra.�

“Mara” Easter Play Review By: Marissa Sugiono

The “Mara” Easter play was performed at Redlands Adventist Church. There were three showtimes: April 13 (Thursday) , April 14 (Friday) , and April 15 (Saturday) all scheduled for a 7:30pm showing.

The producer of this play and many more is Know Him Productions. The synopsis for the play states: “Mara [mar-uh] is a woman tortured by her past trying to make a go of it in a world where women are not valued. The day she met a stranger changed everything.” Mara means “bitter” or “sorrow” in Hebrew.

This play is very popular and often hard to get a seat in. The play is about a Samaritan woman at the well named Mara and her life experiences. Throughout the play, Mara gets married several times and it never seems to go as planned. At the end of the play, it shows Jesus being nailed on the cross. This play is related to Easter because it is the celebration of Jesus’ resurrected as a result of his crucifixion so that all people could be on the Earth. “Everyone enjoyed the play from what I could tell. My family and the people around me loved it!” says Landis Elston-Hurdle (12). “I really enjoyed it and it kept me entertained.”

Advice Column Q: How do we build relationships with other schools?

A: If you have a friend who is attending another school, a good way to build relationships with other schools is to go to their events and mingle with the students there.

Q: How do I get my boyfriend to stop playing games?

A: If you’re referring to video games, you should sit down together and have a conversation about having quality time together without the presence of electronics. But, if you’re referring to emotional games, you should take him aside privately and let him know how you feel, but keep in mind that you can’t force anyone to change, it has to be their own decision.

Q: What should you do when your friends talk bad about others?

A: Don’t be afraid to speak up and let your friends know that it’s not cool to talk badly about others. More importantly, don’t feel obligated to join in on the smack talking.

Q: Why are there so many cliques?

A: There are so many cliques because some people don’t take the time to get to know others and step outside of their comfort zone. Also, people are so used to how their group is, that when they see other groups, they’re easy to judge.

Q: How do you choose the right friends?

A: The best way to choose the right friends is by being yourself. Never let anyone make you feel like you have to change to fit in. Let your character shine and eventually the right people will come to you.

Brain Awareness Week O

n March 13-17, high school students and teachers participated in the second year of Brain Awareness Week. Many activities related to art were held throughout the week for students to participate in, such as: hula, yoga, taizé, coloring, photography, and the collaboration of a painting made by students.

“Brain Awareness Week (BAW) is the global campaign to increase public awareness of the progress and benefits of brain research,” according to the Dana Foundation website. Brain awareness has been going on as a global campaign for over 20 years, but just recently in 2016, LLA partnered in the campaign as well, said Sarah Henderson.

BAW establishes awareness about developing a healthy brain. As teenagers we feel invincible towards the world; teenagers must be aware and realize that the habits they establish now will later affect their future.

For example caffeine use can disrupt sleep patterns.

According to the University of Colorado, “Using caffeine as a study aid, especially in the afternoon or evening, can lead to harmful effects on your sleep cycle.” BAW seeks to help educate youth about how to best treat our brains.

This years theme for brain awareness was specifically “Art is Smart.” “The human brain is unique in its ability to both create and appreciate art. Best of all, the arts can increase happiness and joy which can make all learning easier and more enjoyable,” stated Henderson.

During BAW there were many activities available for the students to participate in. Jessica Williams, who learned hula in 7th grade, demonstrated to students who participated, how to dance the hula. Many students were involved in BAW; Kevin Bartolome (12) said, “I participated in the hula, lead by Ms. Williams and that was probably one of the most enjoyable ones to do.” Hula ties into art in many ways even though it is not a painting or a drawing. Williams commented, “Hula is a dance and certainly a cultural

expression; that is how it ties into art. Every hula tells a story; the story is told by the hands mostly. Art in many ways, whether it’s a painting or a photograph always has a story behind it.”

Kristian Leukert led out the Taizé, a nondenominational monastic order in the Student Services building between some periods of classes.

“Adventist education believes in educating the entire person. Individuals need to grow as an entire person: spiritually, socially, physically and intellectually, hence an emphasis on the arts in our schools” commented Leukert. Music is an expressive way to also worship.

“Anytime I can praise/worship God with other believers is a good day, but having it happen somewhat randomly in the middle of a hallway was extra fun.”

Rachel Specht (12), an artist herself, was actively involved during the art creations. Specht expressed, “I believe that creating art is a God given ability. It’s what makes us human. God is a creative being, and He created us in His image, giving us the ability to participate in creative activities and connect with Him and other people through that process.”

The student association (SA) also incorporated art into spirit week which coincided with BAW. Spirit week included tie dye day and a color run day then got splattered with paint powder. Since exercise is a big part of the health of the brain, SA incorporated a color run, a brand new activity. Students wore white and ran a relay around the Franz Field as other students tossed colored paint powder on them, resulting in painted people.

A strong arts education promotes the skills students need to be successful. A growing body of studies presents compelling evidence connecting student learning in the arts to a wide array of academic and social benefits. Art has a positive influence on a student’s academic life, “Research is showing that, in school, participating in the arts can have a positive impact on students’ grades, social skills, reading, writing and math ability,” said Henderson.

This Machine Saves Lives

S

ome may call it the surgical robot. Some may call it the Da Vinci machine. Whatever anyone calls it, the da Vinci Surgical Machine is an intelligent machine that impacts the world by mending wounds with its intuitive technology.

In order to have an intelligent machine, there needs to be intelligent people behind it.

The team is called Intuitive Surgical. According to Intuitive Surgical’s website, Intuitive Surgical “design[s], manufacture[s] and market[s] the da Vinci Surgical Systems, which are advanced surgical systems that we believe represent a new generation of surgery.”

There are many parts to the machines.

According to the website, the systems consist of surgeon consoles, a patient-side cart, a “high performance vision system,” and instruments and accessories for the surgeon to do surgeries. The surgical systems effortlessly translate the surgeon’s hand movements into the movements of the instruments inside the patient through “small puncture incisions.” The system provides the surgeon with fine control, range of motion, and 3-D visualization while allowing the surgeon to “work through the small ports of minimally invasive surgery, or MIS.” The machines are used in multiple specialties, principally urology, gynecology, cardiothoracic, and general surgery.

On March 13, the da Vinci Surgical Machine visited Loma Linda Academy (LLA)’s

Heritage room. Gene Oswald, the technology education teacher at LLA and Dr. Bhasker Rao M.D, F.A.C.S, one of Intuitive’s top surgeons and teachers, made this event happen. According to Oswald, a lot of work was put into planning the visit, including making sure the A/C was working well to keep the machines cool and providing “three separate electrical circuits as well as a large projection screen, projector, and sound system.”

The machine was brought for anyone to experience, but Oswald had intentions for his Technology Integration Education (TIE) class to get an exclusive experience with it.

Joseph Murphy of Intuitive Surgical and Dr. Bhasker Rao talked to the TIE students about the machine and gave information such as the history, company, and development of the machine, different uses for/types of operations the machine is useful for, and the future of this technology.

According to Murphy and Bhasker Rao, this technology has enabled amazing possibilities to come to life including significantly reducing the amount of time surgeons need to spend on surgeries from days to hours. It has also enabled patients to leave the hospital in significantly less time from months to weeks or from weeks to just a couple of days.

Besides just listening to a lecture, students got the opportunity to actually work the machine and work on simulations. “[They] were able to practice on the 3D simulator as well as use the actual unit to manipulate the arms to remove bands from small cones and to place them on other cones inside a plastic body cavity. Other students could watch on the screen or view it up

By: Rachel Nyirady close,” says Oswald. This was an opportunity not many are able to have, considering that there was an installed base of only 3,803 machines in the world by September 30, 2016.

The students embraced this opportunity and became very excited about using the machine.

Oswald states, some “said they might even think about surgery now where before they were just thinking about medicine or engineering.”

Dara Salamante (12) thought the robot was fantastic. “The surgery this robot enables especially interested me because I did not realize the benefits this machine could have such as minimizing pain and even recovery time after surgery,” Dara states.

Rachel Specht (12) exclaims, “The robot was incredible! As a lover of video games, I really enjoyed how hands-on it was without having to get my hands dirty. It was really trippy working with it at first because it was so weird seeing it in 3D. After a few seconds, it became really intuitive and felt like I was playing a virtual reality game.”

Douglas Lau (11) “found the robot to be incredibly reliable, it’s movements extremely accurate and perfect for surgery.”

Not only is the robot interesting and fun to play with, the robot changes and saves lives.

Oswald himself is a testimony to that. “This robotic machine is life changing for patients. I know that first hand. When I planned this event with Dr. Bobby I had no idea that this robot would be used on me when I came down with prostate

cancer. In November of 2016 my surgeon used the da Vinci unit at Kaiser to remove my prostate and all the cancer.

Just a few years ago I would have been off work for 2-3 months. With this robot I only missed two weeks,” Oswald exclaims.

The da Vinci Surgical Machine not only changed the life of one of our own faculty here at LLA, but majorly impacts people all over the world. Surgeries can be done by a surgeon miles from the table with minimal pain and reduced recovery time for the patient. This machine is just one example of the amazing technologies around the world that have been created and are currently being created. More and more inventions such as the da Vinci Surgical Machine are possible in the near future as we as creators grow in this ever-changing world. In the words of Oswald, “We should all be makers; who knows who will be the next innovator that comes up with a better way to harness power, the next medical device.”

Spring Marble Cup

By: Elly Lee

1. Prepare plain colored cup, nail polish, warm water, and ModPodge (no waterbase).

2. Pour warm water in any place that may be dirty.

3. Pour nail polish into water, and wait a little bit to spread 4. Put cup straight into the water then take it out.

5. Wait until it’s dry.

6. Once it’s dried, put a thin layer of ModPodge on the nail polish to gloss.

Lip Balm

1. Prepare vaseline, lipstick, q-tips, container, blow dryer (maybe coconut oil and any flavor extract) 2. Scoop Vaseline with q-tips and cut lipstick and put them into the container.

3. Melt the Vaseline and lipstick with blow dryer while stirring with q-tip (you can melt coconut oil, or put any flavor extract as well to make it smell good.)

4. Let stand until firm 5. Put it on your lip

The finance committee and school board just approved a solar panel project for LLA. The school will also be installing covered parking to accommodate for the new panels.
