Following a massive stroke on Monday, September 24th, nurse Gloria

Redfield passed away early Wednesday morning on September 26th. Mrs. Redfield had just retired at the end of last school year, her forty-second year at Loma Linda Academy. Please keep her family in your prayer. . SA will not have student senators outside of chapel looking after the backpacks any longer. Please leave your backpacks in your locker before heading over to chapel in order to keep your property safe. . MAKER FAIRE is officially going to be held on April 7, 2019. Maker Project Application Deadline is January 31, 2019. Maker Project Proposal Form is on the school website. . High School Student Leadership Conference was held from September 27 to 30 located in Leoni Meadows. . Please pray for the many people affected by Typhoon Mangkhut that hit both China and the northern Philippines in the middle of September. Also keep those affected by the earthquake and tsunami that hit the Indonesian island of Sulawesi on September 28 in your prayer. . On October 23, in Yilan County, northeastern Taiwan, a train was derailed, killing at least 18 people and injuring 178. Please keep those people in your prayers.

Thank You & Farewell

By Grace Morales Loma Linda Academy’s recently retired nurse, Gloria Redfield passed away on Wednesday, September 26. She was known for her endless kindness and was a beloved woman of our community.

Nurse Redfield was married to James Redfield and together had three children who all attended and graduated from Loma Linda. She also had four of her grandchildren attend and graduate from LLA. According to Mr. Koh, the Vice Principal on the elementary side, Mrs. Redfield “...started over on the high school side before the current elementary school was built and her old office was in one of the maintenance building rooms. She had direct input in designing the size and specifications for the current nurse’s office when the current elementary school was built.” Even in the very beginning, Mrs. Redfield was involved and gave her all to the school.

Mrs. Redfield also gave her all when it came to her family. Her compassion and love for her family is why she had retired just last year after seeing her granddaughters finish school. She worked at Loma Linda Academy as our school nurse for 42 years and loved her job and working with children. She always welcomed everyone who came into her office with open arms.

Peter Kim (10) wrote, “...She was always so kind and understanding...She has blessed all of us students so much…”

Kailey Gianni (12) said, “Mrs. Redfield was such a blessing in my life. She was always there for me whenever I had anxiety, and gave me comfort...

Thanks to her, I live with more confidence with every step, and I still will in memory of her.”

Savanna Garcia (11) recalled fond memories of Mrs. Redfield in her letter. “...I had no idea what to do with my health problems.

Mrs. Redfield was the only person who knew how to handle me. She calmed me down and always made sure I wasn’t freaking out and would be fine.”

Ben Barruga (12) spoke of Mrs. Redfields patience and kindness, “Mrs. Redfield always was patient with me when I had to come in almost daily to get my treatment for asthma.”

Mrs. Redfield truly went above and beyond in her role as a school nurse and was the very embodiment of kindness and love. She touched many people’s hearts and instilled in many people the compassion that we should all show to each other. Please keep Mrs. Redfield’s family in your prayers.

Sports Updates

Sports are a major part of who we are at LLA. Pride and spirit are put into our athletics department. As of Oct. 15th, our girls varsity football is undefeated and has landed 1st place.

While our boy’s varsity football has come into third place. The varsity volleyball currently has 8 wins and 7 losses while our JV volleyball team has only lost 2 games in the first round of league. Kaleo Loh (10) said “This year’s football season was fun. Getting closer as a family is something I look forward to every year.

The coaches are top notch as they not only teach skill development, but life lessons, and no matter what the outcome of a games score, this is the most important part of our program.”

Plant Power Review

By Maya Townsend Are you a vegan or vegetarian looking for a new place to grab a bite? Tired of paying high prices for plant-based options? Plant Power might be the restaurant you’re looking for.

Plant Power is a plant-based fast food restaurant located in the Packing House District of Redlands.

Their goal is to lower greenhouse gases, health risks, and to save water, all by lowering the consumption of meat and animal products and using biodegradable materials.

Their menu consists of an array of American food options such as burgers, sandwiches, “chicken” tenders and wings, French fries, and salads.

Their fountain drinks are all organic and include options such lemon-lime soda, iced tea, lemonade, and root beer. Along with those options, they also serve smoothies, “milkshakes,” and root beer floats.

I walked into Plant Power at 1:40 p.m. on a Monday. The line was long, usually a sign of success, and people looked eager to eat. Although the line was almost out the door, it only took about 5 minutes to get to the front. The service was friendly and not rushed.

After we ordered, we took a seat inside and waited only 10 minutes before our number was called.

My guest and I each ordered a main meal, a side dish, and a drink, all for $35 including tip. I ordered the “Voodoo Burger” with French fries and a seasonal pumpkin milkshake. The Voodoo Burger reminded me of a vegan In-n-Out burger. The vibe of the entire restaurant reminded me of a vegan In-n-out, really. The burger had a sweet and savory flavor to it. The sweet caramelized onions and “secret sauce” nicely offset the tangy pickles and “beef ” patty. I thoroughly enjoyed the burger, although my guest said they would’ve preferred the burger without the

vegan cheese. The French fries were also pretty good.

They were not heavily salted and came with different choices of dipping sauce. I ordered ketchup but was not a huge fan of how thick its consistency was. The consistency of the Pumpkin Spice milkshake, however, was perfection. It was creamy without being watery and truly tasted just as you’d imagine a pumpkin spice milkshake should be.

My guest ordered the Avocado Kale & Quinoa Salad, “chicken” tenders, and organic root beer. We both agreed that the salad was delicious. Without the sauce, the salad was still very tasty because the red bell peppers hiding at the bottom of the dish added some extra flavor to the kale and quinoa mix, but the best part was the green sauce that came with it. That provided the brightest flavor to the dish.

My guest and I were not sure how to feel about the veggie chicken tenders though. Its texture was very soft. Unlike the consistency of real chicken, those tenders were a little too tender. The chipotle mayo dipping sauce tasted very much like real chipotle mayonnaise and saved the day for the chicken tenders. My guest liked the idea of organic drinks but thought that the root beer was a bit too sweet, until they added ice to tone it down.

Overall, I’d give the restaurant 4 stars out of 5.

The food was delicious, the service was quick, the portion sizes were decent, and the ambiance was very pleasant. If I could only eat at one restaurant for the rest of my life, it would not be that one but as my guest and I have agreed, we will definitely be going again.

J. Will Miss You

Jessica Williams, a religion teacher and a spon-

sor of the class of 2019, had her last official day of teaching at Loma Linda Academy on September 12.

Williams worked as a teacher at Loma Linda Academy for fourteen years. Her students called her “J. Will” as a nickname. Williams left Loma Linda Academy because she had the opportunity to be a recruiter at Southern Adventist University, of which she is an alumni. She left Loma Linda Academy very reluctantly and wholeheartedly.

According to Jazmyne Weley (10), she said, “Ms. Williams’ lessons were very easy to understand. What I appreciated the most was that she had the patience to deal with our class.”

Another student named Yuna Joe (11) also said, “Ms. Williams was a really patient and understanding teacher who always made sure that we understood the concepts we went through. I appreciated how she was always so sweet and never got impatient with her students.”

During her fourteen years of teaching at Loma Linda Academy, Williams impacted a lot of students with her personality and warmth. She always reflected God’s work in her teachings and influenced many students with her knowledge about God. As a religion teacher and class sponsor of 2019, many students will miss her kindness, patience, hard work, and not just her passion for teaching, but also her passion for God. “She was very passionate about what she taught and tried to include every student. I loved how she always tried to think of other options when the answer was no. She was very positive and loved teaching and working as a sponsor.” said Alyssa Knecht (12).

Schoberth Leaves Indelible Mark

By Danelle Taylor Johnston Bonnie Schoberth retired on September 28, after 31 years of service as administrative secretary to the headmaster. In that time she worked for Dr. Gayle Rhoads (namesake of LLA Rhoads Hall), Dr. Roo McKenzie, and Doug Herrmann.

Usually behind the scenes, Schoberth was known to teachers as a mentor, a listening ear, and for a stash of chocolate she called “mood enhancer.”

Schoberth cared about the teachers and staff personally. Warren Jarrard, math teacher, recalls the special care she took for his wife’s retirement party and how much that meant to him. Sergio Uribe, Spanish teacher, remembers how thoughtful Schoberth was. He collects and paints Russian dolls and remembers how Schoberth kindly brought him back one from Russia.

Schoberth modelled compassion and care empowering teachers. She was “my first impression of what a healthy work environment looks like. I really appreciate [her] attitude and [her] help to me all these years,” Jo Cordero, campus pastor, said.

Heidi Elssmann, science teacher, said, “I think of her like Elmer’s glue, because she is what kept us together.”

“LLA will always have a special place in my heart.

The staff was my extended family. I was glad I could be of service to the teachers to help them do their job,” Schoberth said.

Herrmann said, “Thank you for the years. It’s been great fun.”

Schoberth left an indelible mark on Loma Linda Academy. LLA wishes God’s blessing on her retirement.

New Students, New Journeys

By Ethan Cruz For many of the new students here at LLA, life at a new school can be very scary, especially when they haven’t met anyone yet. After interviewing a few of these new students, I have come to a surprising discovery.

1. Tae Young (Steven) Kim: Freshman Tae Young Kim, better known as Steven, is a new freshman student here at LLA. Before he came to LLA, he used to go to a school in the Philippines. He was there for three years until he moved to the United States to finally go to school here. Before he went, he felt very excited about going here because he felt it was his glory to be at LLA, and he felt happy to be here and to be part of the “family” of LLA members. Steven enjoys his life here at LLA, even though he has only been here for just a few weeks. “I like the school because the teachers and the students here are nice,” Steven says, “and it makes me really happy.” For Steven, almost everything here at LLA is no problem and he hopes that his future here at LLA will go well.

3. Julia Estuita: Junior Before Julia Estuita came to LLA, her impression about the school was that she thought it was a small school, filled with lots of kids who were really smart. Julia’s experience here at LLA has been great so far. “Everyone here is so nice and friendly,” Julia says, “and they’re very welcoming.” The part Julia enjoys most about LLA is the community of teachers and students and how they are one big family.

2. Robin Choi: Sophomore Before Robin Choi came to school at LLA, he used to go to a public high school in Fairfield called Rodriguez High School. He liked it there, but then his family had to move down south, all the way down to Loma Linda. When he came to southern California, he had to choose a school to go to. One of his first choices was LLA. He felt eager about going to LLA because he heard there were good people here, and also because LLA is the biggest Seventh-Day Adventist school in the United States. Choi was right, and now he is enjoying his first few months here at LLA.

4. Ednafer Burgos: Senior Ednafer (Edna) Burgos, is a new senior student here at LLA. Before coming to LLA, she went to Lipa Adventist Academy in the Philippines. Edna felt excited and nervous at the same time. “For me, I knew that it would be different going to a new school,” she says, “and that there will be new friends, classmates, and a new high school experience.” Edna has been enjoying her life here at LLA. “The school is awesome,” Edna says, “I enjoy everything here. The people are friendly, and I felt welcome. Also, the teachers do their best for the students to learn more from them.”

After being at LLA for only a few weeks, these students have been enjoying their new high school experiences. Whenever a new student comes or transfers to our school, take the opportunity to greet them, talk to them, or even make friends with them. What you do can make a new student’s high school experience here unforgettable!

New Teachers

By Mirror Staff Dean Anderson is the conductor for the orchestra. He decides on the music, leads the rehearsals, and prepares the ensemble for performances. Anderson became an orchestra conductor because of his two passions: music and teaching.

Before he came to Loma Linda Academy, Anderson was an orchestra conductor and violinist at La Sierra University. He continues to work there while having his job here at the school. When he had the opportunity of coming to Loma Linda Academy, he was excited to work with all the talented musicians and lead them into great performances and music. His hobbies are hiking and skiing, and he also likes watching movies and playing video games in his spare time.

Darren Dudley is an English teacher, who teaches College Prep and Shakespeare, at Loma Linda Academy. Many students also know him as their religion and/ or English junior high teacher. He enjoys being around students, because he believes that being around students all day helps him regain some vitality and keeps him alert.

Before coming to Loma Linda Academy, he had many jobs. For instance, he was once a warehouse worker at UPS, an employee at Starbucks, and a pizza delivery guy. The reason why he chose Loma Linda Academy is because he considers the academy as the premier Adventist school of the United States. He also loves the diversity of the student body at Loma Linda Academy. Dudley enjoys lifting weights and playing video games. He also likes to read and play basketball.

Robert Johnston joined Loma Linda Academy this year as an ESL, Bible, and math teacher. Johnston thinks teaching is a wonderful way to help people. He chose to be a teacher at Loma Linda Academy because he grew up near the city of Loma Linda. Before he became a teacher at this school, he was a teacher in Taiwan, where he learned to speak Chinese. During his free time, Mr. Johnston enjoys the leisure of eating and sleeping.

Spring Benfield teaches three different courses and four classes on the high school side, she teaches two sophomore literature and communication classes and a college prep course. She also teaches seventh grade religion on the junior high campus. She teaches both English and religion because she is fond of those subjects and thinks religion class is an important part of an Adventist school. Benfield feels honored to teach at Loma Linda Academy because her son attended here, and she realizes how incredible our teachers are. Before coming to our school. Benfield was a principal for 17 years at two separate schools. When she was working on her dissertation, she was asked to teach at Louisville, Kentucky, and she fell in love with it. Even though she initially had no intentions of becoming a teacher she has been teaching for 25 years. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, traveling, solving puzzles, playing board games, and playing the piano on some occasions.

Brenda Mohr is the new choir director and music appreciation teacher at Loma Linda Academy. Mrs. Mohr decided to become a teacher at Loma Linda Academy because it is the largest adventist school in North America, and because she is from Southern California. “LLA also has a top-notch reputation for music groups...” she says.

The reason why she decided to teach is because she loves teaching young children. Before Loma Linda Academy , she taught choir at Glendale Adventist Academy for twenty years. Mrs. Mohr earned a 4-year doctorate degree at the University of Washington, Seattle, for Choral Conducting. She enjoys various activities, such as camping, hiking, and cycling.

Don Krpalek is our new high school principal, and he has “... always enjoyed working with the high school age level and with administration…”. Mr. Krpalek was excited to work in this position at Loma Linda Academy. He has also had “...several friends that work here who always talk about how much they love working here [at LLA].” Mr. Krpalek is a seasoned teacher; “I have worked on every level of Adventist education except for college university.” He has been a teacher, principal, education superintendent, and even a dean. Mr. Krpalek’s hobbies include traveling, photography, and food. “I love...going to see new places I’ve never seen before...I like taking pictures...and trying new foods…”

After teaching music and conducting bands at Glendale Adventist Academy (Glendale, CA) and Puget Sound Adventist Academy (Kirkland, WA) for twenty-eight years, Craig Mohr becomes the new director of the bands at Loma Linda Academy. He has always been interested in his position as music director because of his passion for music and his love for teaching it to students. He is interested in becoming part of our school’s tradition of fine bands and continuing the culture of achievement at this school. Hobbies that he enjoy are hiking, camping, and road-cycling. An interesting fact is that he restored a 1960’s Porsche, an old hobby that he may rekindle in the future.

Glenn Elssmann is a new religion teacher. He stepped in and took over Ms. Williams’ classes. Most of us know Mr. Elssmann as, of course, the husband of our physics and Algebra I teacher, Mrs. Heidi Elssmann.

Mr. Elssmann came to Loma Linda Academy for a few reasons. First of all, he loves teaching kids and working with them to grow and to learn. Second, he likes it here at Loma Linda Academy because he used to go to school here and so did his children. He was also once a teacher at Loma Linda Academy. Before Mr. Elssmann came to Loma Linda Academy, he was involved in a lot of different work positions. He taught at an elementary school, helped start a junior college, and has been involved in business and politics. Some of the hobbies Mr. Elssmann enjoys doing are traveling, going outdoors, and building things.

Pastor Roy Ice and Pastor Alger Keough are teaching part-time for Ms. Williams’ religion classes.

A Memoir of the Old Gym

By Funanya Ikechukwu On the 8th of October 2018, the renovated high school gym was revealed to the public. We had parents, alumni, and students who toured the updated locker rooms enjoying cupcakes and popcorn as they looked around.

This gym renovation created much safer locker rooms for student’s belongings. The lockers are now bigger to fit the students’ backpacks, textbooks, etc.

The improved stage with the nice paint job makes it a great place to have programs, and the new lighting makes the gym brighter than the old gym. The graphic panels also give the new gym some much needed design while contributing to soundproofing the gym. One of the reasons why the gym needed to be renovated was because of the lack of safety for personal belongings. Money, calculators, and various personal properties would always go missing. The lack of air conditioning also made it unhealthy to play in the high temperatures. This gave students a negative feeling for playing sports inside the gym.

Coach Jon Hall describes the gym, “like an old 70-year-old battleship: old, gray, and worn out.” It was dilapidated. For some of the past renovations, they had to take out a row of lockers, and they would also periodically stretch out the lockers.

What Coach Hall loves about the gym is the bigger office. He says, ”It is big enough, that I don’t feel like a fish in a fishbowl.” What he also likes about his new office is that it has a really nice bathroom, and it doesn’t stink like a dirty, musty floor unlike the former bathroom.

He loves the new floor because it is cool and easy to clean.

“The gym was tired”

“The gym was tired,” said Coach Sue Peterson.

According to her, it had not been updated or fully renovated for 50 years. There was no air conditioning throughout the gym, and the lockers in the locker room were too small for kids to put away their backpacks.

The old gym has served us for a long time, but it needed a change. The renovated gym now has more office space for the coaches, a great looking interior, a safer locker room for students’ belongings, and most importantly a new air conditioner. It is now a gym that can serve all of our needs efficiently.
