Winners of the LLA Art Exhibition By: Funanya Ikechukwu

The Loma Linda Art Exhibition was held during the LLA Maker’s Faire on May 7th and was held also on the Alumni Weekend the following week. Many students enjoyed seeing the wonderful art that the students of Loma Linda Academy created. Sara Gillespie the main organizer of the Art Exhibition, said that there were over 250 entries entered in the Art Exhibition. Gillespie enjoyed the new location of the Art Exhibition in the Heritage Room, because of the open and spacious area compared to last year’s location in the front hall of Student Service Building. The new location of the art exhibition allowed more people to see the art much more comfortably. Next year, Gillespie hopes to expand the number of art entries. She hopes to get more junior high art and more alumni, especially younger and more recently graduated alumni. People who attended the Art Exhibition had the opportunity to vote for their favorite art. The results are finally out.

The best in show winner was the painting, “Pomegranate,”

by Claire Elias (10th). Elias did not expect to win a prize in the art exhibition, because there were so many talented artists and works in the show. When Claire heard that she won, she was very surprised, but also happy and excited about it. She felt that the best part about winning the art exhibition was the feeling of accomplishment that she got from it. Elias plans to keep on painting in the future.

For the painting category Jen Zhao (11th) won the blue ribbon with her painting “Summer.” Jaime Barros Neto(12th) won honorable mention with his paining “City of Angels.”

For the drawing category, Serena Bhaskerrao (12th) won first place with her drawing “Fiery Pineapple.” Andie Nelson (11th) won honorable mention with her scratch drawing “Roaring Lion.”

In the Photography category, Fiona Lin (10th) won first place with her photo titled “Husky.” Brandon Duguduga (12th) won honorable mention with his photography titled “Playing with Smoke.”

For the Sculpture category, Reid Myers (11th) won first place with his sculpture titled “Heavy Stinger.” Isaac Chen (11th) won honorable mention with his sculpture “Slow Mover.”

Congratulations to all the people who won in their respective categories at the Loma Linda Art Exhibition. The Loma Linda Art Exhibition will be open next year.

Fun Places, Fun Summer By: Lucia You

Fiesta Village Family Fun Park

This is a place that you and your family can join together. There are lots of interesting activities, including a mini golf course, laser tag, carnival rides and arcade games. They open all the days of the week, from 2-9PM during Monday to Thursday, from 11:00 AM-11:00 PM during Friday and Saturday and 11AM-10PM on Sunday. San Bernardino National Forest

San Bernardino National Forest has lots of different species of trees that grow in the mountains. You can take your camera and walk around the forest, take some photos and enjoy the nature to relax yourself. Also, it is a good place to go hiking, camping, etc. They open from 8:00AM-4:30PM during weekdays, they close on the weekend. The address is 602 S Tippecanoe Ave, San Bernardino, CA 92408. Splash Kingdom Waterpark

Here is a fun water park nearby-Splash Kingdom Water Park. They have the tallest enclosed body-flume water slide and some other activities. It opens only in summer. Inside the building right next to Splash Kingdom is a indoor trampoline park.

Mission Inn Museum The Mission Inn Museum has exhibitions about the

history of the inn and inland Southern California history. The museum provides the opportunity of educational programs and daily guide tours. There are some speeches about photography, technology, etc. The Youth Ambassadors program encourages teenagers from 15-18 years old to develop leadership. Student Spotlight: Our Seniors By: Noah Hernandez

Alex Chuquimia Pacific Union College I look forward to learning about what it means to be independent, as well as being able to make momentous choices that will affect my career in the long run. I think college will broaden my perspective on myself and my place in the world.

Vannessa Cisneros University of Oregon I’m looking forward to meeting new people, venturing out of what I know now and beginning my journey into my future career. Starting my higher education and exploring if the career choice I want is really what I want to do for the rest of my adult life.

How to Join the Mirror

The Mirror is the Journalism class of LLA High School. In Journalism you write articles for the newspapers, magazines, and release newscasts about things that are going on around LLA, as well as important events that are happening around the country and the world today. How can you join the Mirror? First of all, you have to pick up a Mirror application from Ms. Taylor Johnston and you have to get two recommendations, one from your English teacher and one from another teacher of your choice. Once you get both of your recommendations completed, give them to Ms. Taylor-Johnston. In the application, mark which position in the Mirror you would like to have. You need to have at least a 3.0 GPA in order to join. Once you finish all of these requirements, the Mirror will let you know you have made it in by sending you a letter of acceptance. The Mirror is open to students involved in photography, filming, writing, and designing. So if you are interested, join the Mirror.

The Mirror needs students as creative as you.

Grace Morales (12) current Editor-in-chief, joined the Mirror when she was a junior. She said, “My experience in the Mirror has been an adventure.

I enjoyed everything. I enjoyed being part of a team and working together to create something that people could read and enjoy. It provided an opportunity to broaden my horizons. The Mirror also enabled me to go out of my comfort zone.”

Funanya Ikechukwu (10) a Mirror reporter said, “My experience in the Mirror was great. I learned a lot of stuff I wouldn’t expect to learn in school such as how to use Adobe and how to interview someone for the newspaper. I recommend the Mirror to other students because it’s interesting and gives us the opportunity to know what goes behind the scenes of writing a newspaper and it’s a really nice experience to have.

Also the Mirror teaches us some important things that we might need later on.”

Lucia You (10)another Mirror reporter said, “The Mirror helped me have confidence to talk to people I didn’t know before and I get to do a lot of things like taking photos, writing, working with groups of people, and making more friends.”

No Pros in Procrastinating By: Tommie Cristales, Sung Been Han, and Marylaila Lowe

In early March, Ms. Taylor Johnston’s College English classes came up with a survey for the LLA student body that asked a variety of personal questions. As a part of their Better World Project, the groups presented a problem existing in society and proposed a solution to that problem. One group submitted sleep-related questions such as, “How many hours of sleep do you get per night?” or “Do you think you get enough sleep?” This was all in order to gather data to support their proposal of increasing the amount of sleep student at LLA get. The results they found were shocking. A healthy amount of sleep for a teenager is around nine hours, and students at LLA were getting significantly less with only 10% of students getting the appropriate amount of sleep.

Getting enough sleep is extremely important, especially for teenagers. According to studies done, a significant correlation was found between lack of sleep in teenagers and problems such as anxiety, depression, lower grades, and suicidal thoughts.

In order to find the reason why students weren’t getting enough sleep, the group asked the question, “If you get less than 9 hours of sleep, what is the reason?” The survey results showed that a significant portion of students didn’t get enough sleep due to procrastinating on academics in addition to other responses such as homework and sports.

This brought a sense of relief as procrastination is an issue that is relatively approachable compared to the rigid schedules that are not as flexible. Thus, the group decided that informing the student body of ways to stop procrastinating is an effective way to increase the average amount of sleep. So here are some ways that might help you starting working now rather than later.

1. Remove distractions - Distractions are one of the main reasons we tend to procrastinate. Has this ever happened to you? You sit down to start studying or your homework only to be disturbed by a phone notification five minutes in. You end up browsing through your phone and losing all concentration you had. Distractions stop students from staying focused on our given task and results in many procrastinating, thus removing all potential distractions before you start working is critical when you want undisturbed, focused work time.

2. Study with a buddy - Having a friend to keep you grounded is also an effective way to stay on task. In addition, a friend can also help you understand concepts or help you brainstorm. However, there can be drawbacks in that a friend can prove to be more of a distraction rather than a beneficiary so be aware.

3. Make a list/outline - One reason why people procrastinate is they don’t know where to start. Making a list or an outline can not only help you get started, but gives you a better understanding of how much work needs to be done. For me personally, I like to get the easy work over with and work on the harder tasks at the end, but this varies from person to person.

4. Don’t put yourself down - It’s only human nature that we make mistakes and when we do end up procrastinating, it is important that we don’t get angry with ourselves. Leave the past as is, and focus on what you need to do right now. Putting yourself down for procrastinating will only waste more time.

In conclusion, procrastinating is an unhealthy habit that comes with numerous consequences. It is important for us to establish good habits now, so that we will have an easier time later in our lives. There are many effective ways to stop procrastinating, but ultimately it is up to you on whether you choose to use these resources.

Pi the Giraffe

When I first joined the Mirror, I thought I was just going to take pictures, do interviews, and write stories for the newspaper. I never actually thought I would make comics. It was certainly a journey, from creating a giraffe with only one spot, and a faceless teacher, to making stories out of them for each issue. There were times when I procrastinated, lost motivation, and missed deadlines. It was rather stressful, but it was also really fun. I never lost that joy in making these comics. I know that most of the comic strips were not as enthusiastic or hilarious as I wanted them to be, but I hope they left some kind of inspiration or made people laugh even a little bit. I enjoyed creating these two special characters for the Mirror.

When I see students and teachers reading them, it makes me happy.

Thank you again for reading “The High school Life of Pi[e]” and “The Teacher.” I wanted to draw comics that both students and teachers can enjoy. I do not really know how the creation of a giraffe with a single spot in the shape of a pie, came to be. If you ask me, it was a spontaneous idea. Some comic strips of “The Teacher” were inspirations taken from working in the high school office and while focusing in my daily classes.

It was fun being able to draw for the Mirror.

I hope that a student will continue drawing comics for the school newspaper next year.

Letter From the Editor By: Grace Morales To the Mirror staff,

Being apart of the Mirror for these past two years has been an incredible blessing. Working as a photographer and photo editor and moving on as the Editor-in-Chief has provided me with numerous opportunities and life lessons that will stay with me forever.

The first person I would like to thank is Ms. Taylor Johnston, my advisor and mentor. Without her I would never have had any of these opportunities and I be lost as a student and a person. Thank you Ms. TJ for being a constant in my life and truly showing how much you care for me and the rest of the team and all of your students. You’ve touched not only my heart, but many others and I will cherish the love and memories you’ve given me.

I would like to also thank each of my Mirror staff. Thank you all for your hard work, passion, and uplifting spirits.

I am incredibly proud of all of you for the beautiful newspapers and magazines that you have all created and put together.

Thank you Angela and Mai-Mai for being such diligent editors, and I am incredibly thankful for your meticulous work in ensuring our photos and articles are immaculate. Angela, your photos and collages have been a continual favorite of many and showcase the beauty of our school and the many things are students are capable of. Mai-Mai, thank you for your wonderfully entertaining articles and hilarious comics. I wish you both the best of luck in continuing onto a new chapter of your lives in college and I hope you continue in your endeavor to find the beauty in the world.

Thank you Noah and Funanya for your beautiful writing and constant attention to detail. You both have given me so many new insights and truly added wonderful content and depth to the Mirror. You have come through so many times in ensuring our articles are thorough and that the Mirror prints on time. So thank you for your diligent work and the late evenings to finish each issue. I wish you patience for the next two years you both attend Loma Linda Academy and hope you continue being a part of the Mirror and bring even more to the table to help it to continue in flourishing.

Thank you Ethan and Lucia for being diligent reporters and writers continually throughout the year. From the beginning of the year until the end I have seen you both grow so much and open up each day in the Mirror class. You’ve made incredible progress and helped us all work together as a team. Thank you for your contributions and wonderful articles to our Mirror, I hope you both also continue to work as part of the Mirror staff and keep writing adventurous articles to keep our readers on their feet. Good luck to you Ethan as you move onto your senior year, keep working hard you’re almost done! And good luck with your studies Lucia as you move onto your junior year!

Mirror staff truly feels like a family and I will miss you all so much as I leave for this new chapter in my own life.

Keep up your hard work as Mirror staff, I cannot wait to see how much you will all continue to grow next year.
