MIR ROR 22 March 2019 Vol. 87 Issue 7
4/1 Art submission deadline & minimum day
Briefs • began daylight saving time on the first sunday in April to the last sunday in October. That schedule remained in place until 2007 when the DST schedule was changed to the current March to November schedule. Just this past year, California voted on Proposition 7 regarding daylight saving time. since the “Federal Government does not require states to adopt permanent daylight saving time,” California senator Mike Morrell explained in an email interview. “As passed by voters, Proposition 7 now allows the state’s legislature to decide if California will stay on daylight saving time year-round or stick to the practice where we just switch our clocks twice a year. Such an action would require a two-thirds vote of both the Senate and Assembly,” Morrell said. Overall, the real question is, should we keep daylight saving time? It is up to our Government to decide.

The Month of March focuses on Women’s History and is meant to empower women. Through the remembrance of the women who fought for our rights in the past, we reflect on ourselves what it means to be a woman today. We are honoring those who sacrificed so much by asking our students what being a woman means to them. Danielle Gilbert (12): When I think about what it’s like to be a woman I think of what’s been exemplified to me through the prominent female figures in my life. Such qualities are strength and sensitivity, and knowing when to use both for the benefit of yourself and others; success and failure, and the ability to learn and grow from both extremes of that spectrum; and perseverance in whatever it is you put your mind to. Alexis Gonzalez (11): Being a woman, for me, means that we are different and wonderful in our own way, but we are all equal to everyone else.

a similar schedule. Their summer begins on the last Sunday of March and switches back to universal time during the last Sunday of October. The main purpose of daylight saving time is to save one hour of daylight a day during the summer. Some students are okay with the time change. “The time change has been really rough for me in the mornings,” Brandon Ching (12th) “I like the time change because we get more daylight during the summer,” Alex Hodgkin (11th) said. However, some students do not like the time change. Erik Weniger (9th) thinks “we should get rid of daylight saving time.” The history of daylight saving time is complicated. According to the Britannica Encyclopedia, some think that it was Ben Franklin who created the idea for daylight saving time, but most historians agreed that it was William Willett. Willett came up with the idea to shift clocks forward one hour. He thought it was a waste that people were sleeping an hour late per day during the summer. During World War I, the U.S. adopted daylight saving time as a way to save fuel. In 1986, Congress passed a law that

Spring Forward, Fall Back
The motto for time change is “Spring forward, fall back,” because in the spring, we move our clocks forward and in the fall, we move our clocks back. Daylight saving time, when we move the clocks forward, is handled differently around the world, but in the United States, it works like this. According to webexhibits. org, everyone in the U.S. except for most people in Hawaii and Arizona, shift their clocks forward one hour at 2 a.m. during the second Sunday of March, and in the first Sunday of November, everyone reverts their clocks back to Standard Time. The countries of the European Union use

Being a woman to me means being self confident, self sufficient, strong, and yet having the ability to reach out and ask for help when necessary. Being a woman encompasses many things and I just hope that as I grow in Christ, I will become more into his likeness. Jazmine Garcia (9): To me being a woman is knowing that at times in my life I may not be treated like others or I won’t have the same opportunities, but having the title ‘woman’ fives me a stand, it gives me strength that I can do all things.

Correction for Volume 87 Issue 6, Fresh./Soph. Valentine’s Day Dinner on page 16. There was an overabundance of food, with plenty leftover after the dinner. Some students felt that the food could have been more filling, but overall the freshmen and sophmores thoroughly enjoyed their time and tea. Do you want to be part of the Mirror?
