“Easy” as Pi By: Ethan Cruz

π

Pi Day is a traditional mathematical holiday held on the 14th of March. If you put March 14th in mathematical form, it will make “3.14,” which is the nearest approximation of π. “I think pi day should have been celebrated once,” says math teacher, Ms. Phillips, “because a few years ago in 2015, on March 14, the date was 3/14/15 and if you put it in mathematical form it would be 3.1415, which makes the pi approximation a little longer.” If you also included the time, 9:26, then the numbers would have been 3.1415926.

As you might know, pi (also known as π) is a Greek letter and it is an infinite number in the world of math.

According to math teacher, Mr. Jarrard, “pi represents the ratio of the diameter of a circle to its circumference, thus, it is also used to go backwards in calculation that involve circles.” Pi Day is not an official holiday but people, especially mathematicians, like to celebrate Pi Day because pi is a significant number in everyday living. “You cannot find any use of a circle that does not involve pi,” says math teacher Mr. Jarrard, “if your go into your car and when the wheels turn, that’s pi and it’s everywhere.”

Pi has a long and interesting history. According to teacher Mr. Jarrard, pi was early on thought to be a ratio that was

twenty-two sevenths and was part of the Greek discovery of a circle and its diameter. They misunderstood and were inaccurate to realize that the ratio is not a perfect fraction like twenty-two sevenths.

The history of the mathematical constant is also debatable. According to math teacher Ms. Haley Baker, pi is referenced in the Bible. In 1 Kings 7:23 on where it describes King Solomon’s plans for the Lord’s Temple, the Bible

mentions the circumference and diameter of the Temple. The Egyptians in ancient history also used the number pi, but their approximation was 3.16 instead of 3.14.

The Babylonians also used the mathematical constant but they had a smaller approximation.

Nobody is exactly sure when it was invented.

Pi Day is also an opportunity for people to play on with the word and eat lots of pie.

Pi day gives people a chance to learn more about math and to research some of the history and to learn some other applications of pi. It also gives people a chance to pause in the world of mathematics and look around and see how influential that number is. Apart from pi, there are other numbers in the world of math that are also significant; for example, the number e or the natural number, which is also an infinite number.

If you want to, you can take time to celebrate pi day on March 14. There are many activities you can do. You can learn about math, try to solve pi, try to memorize all the numbers, and the best part, eat your favorite pie.

Paper cutting is a fun thing to do, it is easy to make and can be used in lots of ways.

Material: 1.Square paper 2. Scissor 3. Pencil and eraser Instructions: 1. Have a square paper ready.

2. Fold the square paper.

3. Fold the paper again.

4. Fold the little square into a triangle.

5. Draw the picture on the paper.

6. Cut off the shade parts of the paper.

7. Open the paper carefully.

Suggestion: For this paper cutting, you can put it on the window or anywhere you want. Also, you can put it into some cards (birthday card, holiday card, etc.) and give to your friends and family. For the drawing part, you can draw wahtever you want, use your imagination.

THE MEMORY PROJECT By: Mai-Mai Ty

Loma Linda Academy’s AP art students will be participating in the Memory Project, an organization that specially gifts children with not only a portrait of themself but also a sense of happiness, a positive memory, and peace. The Memory Project invites “art teachers, art students, and solo artists” to spread kindness by creating masterpieces of children around the world who have experienced “substantial challenges, such as violence, war, extreme poverty, neglect, and loss of parents” according to the “Memory Project.”

“The organization goes over to [...] refugee camps and it takes pictures and does little interviews with each of the children,” Ms. Gillespie, art teacher, said, explaining further details about the Memory Project operates. She said that the pictures of these children are given to artists, art teachers, and students (Gillespie). After they draw or paint them, the pictures are delivered back to the organization where they will then give it to the children themselves (Gillespie).

“Each year we deliver portraits to children in eight or more countries,” the “Memory Project” website states.

“We usually send two staff members to each country with the portraits wrapped up in special transport bags. The two staff members then travel around each country delivering the portraits to children at numerous locations and filming highlights of the process.”

According to memoryproject.org, the charitable nonprofit organization has created “more than 130,000 portraits for children in 47 countries” since 2004. While studying psychology and social work at the University of Wisconsin, Ben Schumaker founded the Memory Project.

Gathering art teachers and their students to create portraits, Schumaker has delivered “positive and tangible ‘memories’” for children who barely had any treasure

that represented their life stories (“Memory Project”). He built a foundation for friendship and harmony around the world.

At present, the organization has a team of seven employees to connect with different children’s charities around the world and receive photographs of children’s faces. Of course, the most contribution is done by the art teachers, students, and solo artists who have committed their skills and time to create these beautiful portraits. By creating these portraits and having them delivered back to children globally, Gillespie said that, “they create this [...] connection across the world with someone who took the time [...] to give them a picture and for some of them, it’s the first time they’ve ever seen themselves in a picture.”

By going to memoryproject.org, it is an opportunity for anyone who specializes in art to apply. You can email portraits@memoryproject.org or call the organization at (608)-616-0327 to get started. They will tell you about the children and the countries they are currently involved in, and you can tell which time frame works best for you.

“You have to pay $15 [...] to help cover the cost of the transportation and the cost of organizing it,” Gillespie explained further details about the application. “Anybody can do it, but teachers can order [...] large packets and then they’ll [...] send you the requested number.”

Regarding that it is her fourth year issuing the project to her art class, Gillespie plans to have her AP students participate in this assignment. “After portfolios are due, we still have another month of school so it’s the perfect time to do a meaningful project,” she exclaimed. ”I have 10 or 11 AP students this year so this will be the biggest number of portraits we’ve ever done, and then I’ll also give any [...] Art Club students the option to do it as well.”

Rainbow Streaks & Constant Leaks By: Grace Morales Uncharacteristically, California has been experiencing more frequent downpours, hail, and even some snow this time of year! While many may be glad for the change in scenery and constant rain, others certainly were not enjoying the many leaks this weather has caused. While you may think North Hall would suffer the most leaks, there have actually been more leaks occurring in the student services building.

And yet the biggest issue has been the rather large, and ongoing leak, in the library as many may have seen and heard due to the large fan that had taken up residence in the library for a period of time. Rose Anjejo shared her experience of the ongoing leak in the library, which she says has been there for quite some time. “[There is a leak] in two corners. I don’t know [how the water is getting in]. Yes, [maintenance] has come, but the problem has been there for five years, I’ve been calling them, but we don’t know where the problem is coming from. Books and chairs have been getting wet, and I had to throw out books two years ago they got so wet. But many books I’m able to salvage.”

Anjejo and the maintenance crew have been unable to identify the source of the leak, and so it persists.

All Anjejo can do is deal with the aftermath of the leak. “I just have to move the chairs. The water comes from the ceiling, and one place it is from the walls. So I don’t know where it’s from, the walls are just wet. I don’t keep the fan there, the main cleaners bring the big fan here. Sometimes if it is still raining they leave it there. I was told that the leaks had been fixed, but when it rained the walls kept getting wet anyway.”

Jordan Roddy, the assistant director of engineering services here at Loma Linda Academy, was kind enough to share the current investigation of where all the leaks have occured. “To my knowledge there have been a couple of leaks in the elementary, and a couple of leaks in the junior high, and one or two leaks here in

the student services building. Karen Kaatzand, Blanca Calixto at the elementary, Pastor Tom Quishenberry in the junior high, and Danelle Taylor Johnston as well as Anne Chaffee in the high school Student Service Building. In some of the instances they’re just old buildings, older roofs, and leaks occur over time in and around mostly gutters and down spouts,” Roddy said Roddy then described the multiple issues that had been causing leaks in several classrooms in the student services building. There was even a leak in the IT department in North Hall, but nothing had been damaged, only a small leak in a corner. Roddy explained, “Once you identify the location of the leak, sometimes it takes a while to find the exact location and cause of the leak. Whether it’s an old roof, a penetration, or a gutter that’s leaking. Once you find the cause of the leak, it’s generally pretty easy to repair.”

Maintenance have been diligent in locating the many leaks around campus and fixing them up, Roddy shared the system that maintenance has been following to find and fix all the leaks. “Right now we have ongoing preventative maintenance schedules where we check roofs and roof lines. The majority of roofs are checked prior to rains coming. Then after we make a repair we have to wait until the next rain comes to actually verify if it’s fixed. [After the hailstorm] we did have to get up on all the roofs and make a visual inspection to make sure that everything was still intact. We were particularly interested to see how the new solar panel system functioned. Luckily nothing was damaged.”

Black History Month: Heroes By: Grace Morales Black History Month is a time where we take the time to celebrate and honor the black community and the many people who have sacrificed to improve the lives of many. Here are some of the people our students are inspired by and who have made a difference in their lives.

Arianne Milosavljevic (9): My mother is my hero. When she was marrying my dad she went through a lot of crap because she was not white and he was. She went through all that, and that’s how I’m here. She was almost like ignored, or [treated like] she doesn’t deserve to be with him, because of who she is. She was treated as lesser than by the people she was around—people she thought were her friends.

“ My mother’s story has had an impact

on my life in showing me the subconscious prejudices that people still have for others, but also how strong of a woman my mother was and still is.”

She’s showed me how to be strong, independent, and to just embrace who I am.

Samuel Chapman (11): I really look up to my sister, Jenna Chapman. She was able to accomplish a lot throughout her high school years and college. I find her really inspiring because she made the most out of all the opportunities she was given.

“ My sister has inspired me to do my best in school and get the best opportunities in life to make the most of myself.”

Elizabeth Mtango (10): Ruby Bridges is an American civil rights activist. She was the first African-American child to desegregate the all-white William Frantz Elementary School in Louisiana during the New Orleans school desegregation crisis in 1960.

“ She is important to me because of her

confidence, it takes a lot for someone to go where they’re not welcomed for something people thought wasn’t important at the time.”

She impacted my life by making me be more thankful when i go to school, because not a lot of people get the opportunity to do what I’m doing. I have a whole new perspective of school, and I strive for only the best.

I honor her by taking a new perspective on school and seeking new opportunities.

Marylaila Lowe(12): I think my heroes are all the artists who aren’t afraid to do something different. Some of my favorites are Jidenna, who uses rap to show the ugliness of racism and police brutality, and Janelle Monáe who writes thought provoking lyrics to empower women. I also like Anderson Paak, he’s just got his own vibe going on. There are countless other black artists that are so creative and different and just own it. They’ve impacted my life because they’re extremely talented people that use their talents to spread their ideas that I happen to support. Music is something that can impact so many people, too. They also showed me that it’s okay to be different, and have a different style, whether it be in music or fashion or anything.

Anyone can honor them by just listening to what they’ve created!

On a more personal and slightly cliché note, my hero and mentor is also my mom.

“ She’s the strongest woman I know, and we’re in a time where society is finally starting to accept strong women.”

Women don’t have to be saved or frail and weak. I’m so glad that I have my mom to look up to.

Fresh./Soph. Valentine’s Day Dinner By: Noah Hernandez

On February 10, 2019 the freshman and sophomores had their annual Valentine’s Day Dinner at Azure Hills SDA Church. The theme this year was Alice in Wonderland, “The decorations...really made the Alice in Wonderland theme come to life.” Said Annelise Rigsby (10), who played the Queen of Hearts in the Valentine’s Day skit. “It was great being in the play, I got to know some of the freshman better.” When walking into the dinning hall, the entire room was a stage. The story came alive with the beautiful and colorful decorations displayed across the room. Even the officers took part in bring to life the story of Alice in Wonderland with their costumes.

Many students favored the beautiful scenery created and how it tied the theme of the night together.

Julia Ko (9) was in charge of the entertainment committee which means she planned out the program, skit, and music. Her favorite part of the entertainment committee was the play, “I loved every single part of the play, from

planning it to being in it.” The play featured our own sophomores and freshman playing the characters. It told the story of Alice post Looking Glass falling through a rabbit hole and back into wonderland. The play was interactive with the audience and everyone shared a few laughs by the end of the play.

“As the other cards and I pranced around the stage, I let go of my fear and had tons of fun.” said Julia Ko.

Not all aspects of the event were liked as much as the decorations or play. Although many students thought the food tasted good and kept the theme, they wished there was more quantity.

“The food did follow the ‘Tea Party’ theme, but I think bigger portion sizes of food would have been better.” said Raffaela Dias (9).

Scones, cookies, finger sandwiches, fruit and tea were provided in a limited supply. Even though the food was delicious, most students would have prefered to have eaten more sustaining food.
