Aftermath of the Election

The Democratic Party has emerged victorious with the Democratic Nominee Joe Biden as the president elect and Kamala Harris as the vice president elect.

Joe Biden has received 290 electoral college votes according to AP News.

Joe Biden has been presenting speeches. The most well known being the Speech he made after becoming president-elect on November 7th and stating that he has gained over 74 million ballots and has made a presidential record for the history in doing so.

He has also said in his speech to be a president that does not divide but unifies the American people. Biden said he doesn’t “see red states and blue states, only the United States.” Which is a reference to one of Obama’s speeches back when Barack Obama ran for president in 2004.

The Republican Party’s, President Donald Trump hasn’t conceded in this 2020 election, after reaching 232 Electoral College votes he requested a recount in the states of Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin, Michigan, Arizona and Nevada, according to AP News. Joe Lieberman a former United States Senator said that, “Trump has right to ask for recounts.”

President Trump’s current legal battle is with Pennsylvania on those terms. Trump supporters have been protesting against the election results at the Supreme court in support of Donald Trump on social media and in public seen on Fox news.

According to Archive.gov December 14th is the day the Electoral votes are sent to Congress for a counting to make sure each Electoral vote is correct, The official date for Congress to count the votes is on January 6th, 2021. The Final result will end on the Inauguration day at noon on January 20th, 2021.

First Time Voting On November 3, 2020, millions of people voted on who would be the next president of the United States, along with a variety of other things like propositions and city council.

Many also mailed in their ballots due to the pandemic.

Briefs

After 32 years without a World Series win, the Los Angeles Dodgers became the champions and took the victory against the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 6 of the World Series beating them 3-1. This took place at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, on October 27, 2020.

Jeopardy host Alex Trebek, passed away peacefully on November 8, 2020, at age 80. He had been battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer for almost two years now. He hosted the show “Jeopardy!” for over 37 seasons which include more than 8,200 episodes. Trebek’s last day in the studio was October 29, and episodes hosted by him are set to air through December 25. He has inspired many people throughout his life and will be greatly missed.

As of November 16, 2020, there have been 11.1M COVID-19 cases and 246K deaths. In California, there have been 1.04M cases and 18,265 deaths. In San Bernardino County, there have been 74,166 cases and 1,097 deaths.

Joseph R. Biden has been announced as the winner of the 2020 election, as reported by CNN news. He will become the 46th president of the United States.

Kamala Harris, the vice president-elect, will become the first female, Black and Asian vice president in the United States’ history.

LLA Welcomes Black Student Association Club Danelle Taylor Johnston

The time is right for the new Loma Linda Academy Black Student Association club, Dr. Sandiford, club sponsor, said. “This club happened at this moment because there was a pause in the country. After the murder of George Floyd was widely seen on TV and social media, Americans seemed to fully realize the low level of respect for the lives of black people in this country. This is the context in which students came forward asking to form this club. It was the right time to listen to those who have been unheard for a long time.”

Lizzy Mtango (12), president, said “BSA is a club where black students can feel comfortable, but not only black students the whole school—whoever wants to come and join us and learn more about the black community.”

Jordyn Wright (11), the club’s director of media, said her goal for the club is to help

people “to learn and embrace black culture [...] and listen to our stories.”

The BSA bylaws state, the mission is to “provide opportunities for leadership, develop opportunities for service, foster equality among members of the LLA community through sharing experiences in a supportive environment; encourage the pursuit of excellence in scholarship, respect in friendship, and commitment in spirituality by building a strong community of faith among members.”

BSA is well supported by the faculty and the school board. Baron Sovory, pastor at Valley Fellowship SDA church and a constituent pastor, is the club’s advisor.

The club’s inaugural event was a vespers on Nov. 6, at LLA. Mtango said the event went well and students had fun. “It was a good time to praise God and come together,” she said.

BSA is open to any current high school student, faculty or staff of LLA. An upcoming virtual event is a Kwanzaa celebration in the early part of Dec. The club is currently operating by an appointed leadership committee of nine students, lead by Mtango and Faith Ncube (10), vice president.

Officers will be elected in December to lead the club, beginning second semester.

Students interested in becoming officers should contact Dr. Sandiford.

Mtango said, “Right now we’re going to hold meetings for our club members two times a month. [Students] can join by going to the LLA Student instagram bio by clicking the link. The Instagram handle is @llastudentbsa.” Students can also join by talking to Dr. Sandiford.

Black Friday

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving where stores give huge discounts to start off the Christmas shopping season. However, with COVID-19, Black Friday this year will look different from previous years.

-Kemi Adeyeye According to BlackFriday.com, stores such as Lowe’s, Macy’s, Walmart, and Amazon have been advertising pre-Black Friday sales.

Lowe’s and Macy’s started their sales back in October and Walmart started November 4th.

Some stores have released what their plans are for Black Friday. According to BlackFriday.com, Bath & Body Works will have sales available instore only from November 23-25, online sales through the website on November 26, and on the 27th sales will be both online and in-store.

Best Buy started their sales on November first, they have different sales for certain days leading up to the 27th. On the 27th they will have deals online and in-store (limited capacity).

Cyber deals start on the 28th of November.

Pecan Pie

Ingredients

Pie Crust

1. To create the pie crust, mix together the flour and salt in a • 3 cups all-purpose flour bowl. Then, add the vegetable • 1 teaspoon salt shortening and the butter.

• 3/4 cup vegetable shortening or lard Mix the flour, salt, vegetable • 3/4 cup salted butter, cut into pieces shortening, and butter • 1 egg, lightly beaten together until they look like • 1 tablespoon distilled white vinegar little pebbles.

Pour the syrup mixture into the pan and then sprinkle the remaining pecans across the top of the pie.

5. Bake the pie for half an hour with aluminum foil placed lightly on top of it. Remove the foil and then proceed to bake it for another twenty minutes.

6. While the pie should be a bit jiggly when you pull it out, it should not be overly watery or loose. If it is far too fluid, then cover it with the foil again and allow it to bake for another fifteen to twenty minutes.

Check on it, and if it is still too watery, then repeat the process of covering it with foil and letting it bake until it is ready.

7. When the pie is just right, pull it out of the oven so that it can cool for several hours or overnight. Then serve and enjoy.

Indoor Hobbies Being stuck in quarantine can be very boring and monotonous. To fight this boredom, during quarantine, many people picked up a new hobby.

Here are some activities that students and adults can do to keep themselves entertained while staying indoors.

Brooke LaTour (9) enjoys doing art and drawing in her free time. She started drawing about four years ago when all her friends were into drawing so she decided to try it as well. Art can evoke many different emotions in the mind.

She said, “Doing art can bring many different emotions. For example, I feel a sense of accomplishment when I finish something. On the other hand, I feel stress when I have not yet completed it.”

Her artwork improved significantly during this quarantine when she got an Instagram account. She saw the works of other artists and got inspired by them to do greater things.

Clarissa Tching (12) enjoys playing the piano in her free time. She has been playing the piano for over ten years and she takes piano lessons. Along with practicing the songs assigned from her lessons, she also plays other songs for fun. Additionally, she also enjoys improvising, which is making up her own music. Tching said she likes playing the piano because, “Playing the piano is really relaxing and it is fun to create and play beautiful melodies. Making music also helps me to destress,” she said.

She enjoys it because it is a way to express her bright personality by writing in bold colors. She said, “It’s one of the things that keeps me relaxed through these tough times, and helps me express what my personality is like through paper.” She uses it to make her homework assignments, notes or projects more fun.

She started doing calligraphy in junior high and was inspired by social media. She came across a calligraphy page and fell in love with it and aspired to make her notes look just as pretty as the ones she saw. When she first started out, it was not so great. However, as time went by and she got more practice in, she improved slowly but surely and is still improving to this day.

Noah Saesim (10) recently picked up a new indoor hobby. He likes to collect rare trading cards, including pokemon, football, and basketball cards. He started collecting cards about a month ago because he thought it would be a cool hobby to have. It brings him feelings of excitement and curiosity while he is opening the cards. He also said, “It is interesting and it has a unique culture that is fun.”

Those are just a few examples of indoor hobbies that students can do to relieve their stress or just take a break from everything and have a fun time.

These activities can bring you joy and entertainment during this time of isolation.

Celebrating Thanksgiving

The spread of coronavirus has caused many social events to be postponed. Many people have had to cancel meeting family to avoid exposing themselves and others to the COVID-19 virus. However, people are finding new ways to celebrate Thanksgiving, while staying safe and healthy.

COVID-19 has changed the way many students are going to celebrate this year. Erin Stone (9) said, “ Last year we had 29 people, [who were ] close family, friends, and visiting relatives.”Stone said that this year has changed the way her family will gather this year, especially since they had unfortunately lost a core member of her family.

Carly Elias (10) said, “ Every year my aunts and uncles come down from Canada to celebrate with us, but this year, due to COVID, I will just be celebrating with my immediate family.”

Aurora Sutorus (9) said she, she has had to decline traveling.

Traveling was something that she and her family did to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday.

These students and many people in the United States are going to adapt to a different way of celebrating Thanksgiving. A highlight of Thanksgiving is having a great Thanksgiving feast with friends and family.

“We are celebrating with immediate family only at my house, and everyone in our family makes one dish each, although my dad often makes more,” said Stone.

Sutorus said, “ We’re gonna have a feast.”

“Every year me and my family prepare a really good Thanksgiving meal. It usually takes us a while to finish making all the food, but we also like to all go on a hike together,” Elias said.

There are many activities that students can do at home.

“Encourage people around you to

appreciate. If you are planning on staying home, you could instead take a hike in the mountains and enjoy nature, or you could play team games, like spike ball, with your family.”

Sutorus suggested that you should make sure to chow down a whole lot of food and keep in touch with your family and friends via FaceTime, Skype, or Zoom.

This pandemic has put a damper in a lot of our holiday plans. The CDC has given the general public guidelines to make celebrating safe. Although it is recommended to not meet extended family and friends this Thanksgiving, the CDC has set some guidelines in the event people do choose to go.
