ARTFUL TASTE

Food creates all sorts of bonds between people, similar to how people with similar tastes in music or games bond with each other. Savanna Garcia (12th) grew up watching her grandma who loved to cook. “Seeing her food bring people together made me want to do the same to keep that going,” said Garcia.

Food Network shows and YouTube videos sparked a love for baking in Fiona Lin (12th). “I adored seeing the pastry chef’s work ethic and how baking really worked,” said Lin. There are so many sources available in various forms for just about anyone to start their

Don’t worry about not achieving the same result or taste as the original recipe. Oftentimes, paintings and poems have multiple interpretations. The same dish will differ from each person because, as Garcia said,

“Flavor and cooking flavors are just as unique and different as people.” Of course, there’s a difference between completely burning a casserole and putting a unique twist on it, but learning comes with trial and error.

Whether you enjoy making food

or, like me, prefer eating others’ dishes, it’s indisputable that food reaches a wide variety of people from all different backgrounds. As George Bernard Shaw once wrote in his play Man and Superman, “There is no love sincerer than the love of food.”

Quick Kimchi Pancakes

Ingredients

1 large egg 1 Tbsp. kimchi brine from jar 1/4 cup soy sauce, divided 3/4 cup plus 1 Tbsp. all-purpose flour 4 scallions 4 Tbsp. grapeseed or other neutral oil, divided 3 Tbsp. unseasoned rice or distilled white vinegar 1.

Crack 1 egg into a medium bowl.

Add 1 Tbsp. kimchi brine, 1 Tbsp. soy sauce and 1/4 cup water and

whisk to combine.

3.

Whisk in 3/4 cup plus 1 Tbsp. flour.

4.

Coarsley chop 1 1/2 cups kimchi, add to bowl, and stir to combine.

5.

Thinly slice 4 scallions on a diagonal. Add 1/2 to batter; reserve

remaining scallions for serving.

6.

Heat 1 Tbsp. oil in a medium nonstick skillet over medium-high heat.

7.

Drop 1/4-cupfulls of batter onto opposite sides of skillet (pancakes

should be about 4” in diameter, so you’ll probably only be able to

cook 2 at a time).

8.

Cook pancakes until golden brown on first side, 2-3 minutes,

then flip & cook until browned on second side, 2-3 minutes longer.

9.

Transfer to a wire rack & let cool.

10.

Repeat process in batches with remaining batter & oil; you

should have 8 pancakes.

11.

Combine 3 Tbsp. vinegar & remaining 3 Tbsp. soy sauce in a

small bowl.

12.

Transfer pancakes to a platter.

13.

Top with reserved scallions & serve with dipping sauce alongside.

The Universal Art of Music

By Olivia Kim and Linlin Liu Music is a universal form of art and expression that encompasses culture, creativity, and history. No matter who you are or where you are from, everyone can understand the language of music. It has the power to bridge divisions, bring people together, and create a sense of community, which is incredibly important during this time as COVID-19 affects our world.

Loma Linda Academy provides its students with this valuable skill by hosting both an orchestra as well as a number of choirs and bands. In these programs, students are able to learn how to read music, understand musical terms, express themselves, and experience a new culture or period of history.

Loma Linda Academy currently showcases an audition choir, known as Pro Musica, as well as audition bands, such as Concert Winds and Wind Symphony, for students who want an in-depth and advanced musical experience.

Elden Borillo, a high school senior, is the bass section leader and sings in the choir as a baritone.

He related his favorite parts about being in Pro Musica and singing as “learning from a diverse library of music and bonding with everyone in Pro Musica.” Many of his best memories from choir are the tours, as Pro Musica has been to England, Thailand, Arizona, and many other places.

Senior Karina Lim, the principal of the flute section of Wind Symphony, said, “I chose to join

the band because I love music and it brings my stress down. Honestly, my favorite part of being in the Wind Symphony is playing my solos and performing for other people.”

Lim related the importance of music in her life, having said, “I play music because I feel like my life would be really boring without it. And just doing school work all day would be really boring, honestly. But music just brings color into your life.”

Borillo encouraged students to join the school’s musical program, having said, “You should join the music program if you have even the slightest interest in music. By simply being with a group, you can find out what you like and grow musically as a person.”

Even now, despite the restrictions of quarantine, Pro Musica continues to find ways to break through barriers and produce music. They have recently recorded a video performance of one of their songs that was played during Loma Linda University Church’s Easter service, and the video is linked at the end of the

article.

Dr. Brenda Mohr, the conductor of Pro Musica, said “I decided to become a choir teacher because I was so inspired by my own choir teacher that I had.”

Back when Dr. Mohr had to do student teaching, she was assigned to Napa High School, a place known for a high-quality choir program. She said, “I really didn’t realize how much I wanted to be a choir teacher until I did that student teaching, and that experience changed my life. I just knew that was where I felt the happiest—was being with teenagers and teaching them music and singing.”

Thinking back on her favorite memories from conducting choir this year, Dr. Mohr reminisced about their last tour to London and how they “sang in some really beautiful spaces. Churches with amazing acoustics.” She continued, “My favorite memory is when you could just tell that when we’re all in sync.

And you could tell when it’s a good performance because the acoustics are good, the audience is really responding.”

Dr. Mohr feels that “art is an expression of someone’s soul” and can be created in many ways, including music. “Even though you can’t see or touch [music], you can hear it, and you can feel it.”

Another strong music feature at LLA is the praise bands in our Weekly Chapels, which is an integral part of the school culture.

Pastor JO Cordero, the campus chaplain for both junior high and high school continues to grow the music program in chapel “The level of what we do now is definitely very, very advanced.

Cordero is most proud that students are starting to listen to individual parts of music that are written for their instruments, rather than everyone playing kind of the same thing.

Cordero likens singing to a “fingerprint.” He said, “When you’re singing other people’s songs, it’s like you’re taking their story with you and inserting yours, and now you create something else.”

Chapel has created valuable memories for Cordero, who said, “My favorite memory [from LLA chapel] is that we’re trying to start Chapel with music after the drop

The more you delve into the art of music, the more you are able to express yourself and touch the hearts of others. Music is one of the most beautiful things in this world, and right now, it is one of the things that continues to keep our community united.

Dancers at LLA 8

Samantha Zane is a high school sophomore at Loma Linda Academy. When Zane was four years old, she began dancing ballet after her aunt and uncle enrolled her in a class. “They got me my first pair of ballet flats and everything else I needed to take dance lessons. They also paid for a whole month’s worth of class.”

Although she enjoys various styles of dance such as hip hop, contemporary and modern, ballet remains Zane’s favorite. She is well versed in classical ballet, but within the genre of ballet there are different styles that Zane dances in, such as balanchine and vaganova.

Being a ballet dancer, Zane is no stranger to injuries. In an interview, she said, “Recently I’ve had really bad calf cramps due to Nutcracker and recent competitions.”

Zane visits a massage therapist once a month and consumes foods high in magnesium and potassium to prevent any injuries.

Zane wants people to know that ballet is not just for women, but for men as well. “So many famous male celebrities that have done ballet like Tom Holland, The London Olympians football team, Christian Bale, and many more,” she said. Zane also says that she is open to helping out men interested in getting involved with the world of ballet.

Annelise Rigsby is a high school junior at Loma Linda Academy.

Rigsby began dancing when she was twelve years old, which is considered a late time to start dancing. She began dancing because of what she was witnessing. When Rigsby saw how strong and athletic dancers were, she felt inspired to pick up the trade.

Rigsby’s predominant style of dance is ballet, but she also enjoys practicing contemporary and lyrical dance as well. Her favorite performance was the Kids Artistic Revue, or KAR, dance competi-

tion. “I had just been moved to the advanced category. Even though I was scared to compete in a new category, when I got on that stage I forgot all of that stress and just danced.” Rigsby did so well that she got first in overall performance and a scholarship to return the following year.

Isabella Fick is a high school freshman at Loma Linda Academy. Fick began dancing at age four when her parents saw how she danced around the house.

They decided that putting Fick through dance classes would be good for her.

Fick’s dancing style is very technical. It is described as “Technical with athleticism, precision and attentiveness to musicality.” Fick has had many opportunities to showcase her dance, but her favorite was in 2018. On November 22, 2018, Fick was able to perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York.

Bryan Culberhouse Culberhouse, senior, creates digital images for 3D games he creates. He started creating digital artwork at the end of seventh grade. He creates the images using Unreal Engine 4.

The first image is called “Canyon.”

The second picture is called “Break-

out” and the inspiration mainly came from Mission Impossible movies and he wanted to create a sort of high octane feeling captured in a single screenshot. The second is called “Great Scott.” He mainly got inspiration from the movie Back

to the Future Part III and he tried to capture the sort of feeling that the movie had and maybe recreate it. He started working on these pictures during the summer and it took him a span of three months to finish these.

Let me tell you how it feels. To feel as if you were trapped. After a period of normalcy, it was like an aircraft dropped you in the middle of nowhere. A freight train that you know is coming, but hits you regardless. This constant wall. The worry that sticks onto you like a second skin greets you like a friend. It’s suffocating. It stops you in your tracks and the panic sets in. Your heart beats fast, the tremors almost feel electrifying, you begin to sweat, your hands and feet go numb, the taste of metal overwhelms you, and the ringing in your ears never seems to stop. Everything is too loud.

Observers watch as your emotions are laid out for them to see. You try to reach out but find yourself sinking. Sinking sinking sinking.

The pressure pushes against your chest, and you feel restless, heart pulsing in your throat as you forget to breathe and continue to sink.

Gravity pulls you in, and it feels as though your heart is pumping lead rather than life into you. Feeling so, so small, your lungs begin to constrict. A silent scream sings out from you as a cry for help. They can’t hear you. You feel angry. Livid. For reasons unknown to you as heat begins to seep from the seams. Situational awareness is thrown out the window, and all you know is the static buzz coursing through your mind, body, and soul. Take a deep breath. But every breath seems farther and farther away. Your brain is shut off, and all you can do is feel. Feel the sweat on your hands as they shake. The feeling of your nails as they sink into your skin. This constant state of being alone but not lonely. These feelings manifest into dreams, leaving you restless.

Caged in, you find yourself trapped in endless thoughts as time passes between heartbeats.

Inhale. Exhale. This is anxiety.

We will rise; that was the goal. Superiority and dominance in the world; that is what we wanted, or rather, what they wanted. We had just woken up, scared and weak; we didn’t even know how long we had been asleep for, could have been days, weeks, months, years even. I didn’t know where my mom was, nor my dad and when I asked they said they’re not here and no further details were given. I was scared to ask another question, they looked so, serious. They had led me and a group of others through a hallway; we had military men in front and behind us fully armed as if we were actually able to hurt them. We reached a parting hallway with different rooms, the rooms looked like the rooms you would go into if you were having a check up with a doctor. They sat me down and asked me questions like my name, age, race, and who my parents were. Once they had finished they thoroughly checked me, looking at every detail of my body as if I was an art sculptor and they were the artist.

“Okay, she qualifies. Pass me the needle please.”

My doctor had said confidentially “If you have any discomfort please let us know we will begin the procedure now.”

“I’m sorry but what procedure? I didn’t agree to this sir.” I started to get up from my seat and walk when the military men from before who stood in my path to get out. Just their pure glare sent me walking back to my leather doctor bed. I sat down and looked at the doctor believing I had become their newest test subject for their experimental medication. I couldn’t have been more wrong about what they had injected into me. I started to feel light headed as I started to feel more, my senses were kicked into overdrive and I was sent a cold feeling through my body. The feeling was so overwhelming my body collapsed of exhaustion. I fell forward and the next thing I knew, I has passed out. Only time could tell when I would wake up again.

Mental Health

As the spread of COVID-19 continues to keep us quarantined indoors, the mental health of many people has begun to weaken.

With limited ways of keeping in contact with each other, it’s difficult to create a sense of community during this time.

On top of all of this, people are facing the cancellation of so many events they had been looking forward to. In particular, the senior students have lost their last months together and many memories are no longer able to be made.

All of these things are having a negative effect on the mental health of students, and it’s important to know how to keep your mental state healthy.

Connecting with others has been taken for granted too often. Oftentimes, we may find ourselves passing by a classmate at school, and we may say hello just as a friendly greeting. However, with these

new restrictions in place, in order to contact someone, it takes effort, and it may not come as naturally. This can

lead some people to develop symptoms of depression and anxiety since loneliness has never been more present.

Adjusting to this new lifestyle can put enormous pressure on students as well as faculty. It is hard to gauge how much homework is necessary to make up for

the missed hours in school or how much homework is too much. Finding a balance of homework, self-care, and proper mental health is extremely difficult at this uncertain time.

It is important for people to understand what mental health is, and that it is a completely valid issue that many face.

Mental health encompasses a person’s psychological and emotional well-being, and if this is not properly taken care of, it can spiral into more serious conditions such as depression and anxiety.

Sometimes, it can also be a result of environment, genetics, or other factors as well. With students and teachers facing loads of school work each day on top of stress from COVID-19, it is important for them to learn to take a moment to breathe.

If things are starting to feel too overwhelming, students

should reach out to teachers or trusted adults for help and to explain what they can do to care for the student’s mental health. Understanding that they’re feeling okay is the first step a person can take towards bettering their mental health.

It is important to take care of yourself. Going to bed at a good time and getting adequate rest, as well as eating enough and drinking water will help your body to stay healthy. How you feel physically can affect your mental health.

Keeping track of your homework and setting a schedule for yourself will help you stay organized and less stressed. However, if you are still overwhelmed, you can always talk to your teachers.

They want to help you the best they can.

Talk to God about how you are feeling; He will help you find peace.

Take time to breathe and relax. Do something fun, something that you love.

Maybe take a walk or spend time with your pets.

During this time, it is also important to stay connected.

Oftentimes, it is easy to feel alone and isolated when dealing with mental health, especially now that we are quarantined. It may feel difficult to reach out to your friends, but chances are they

are feeling the same way.

Text or call your friends and check up on them. Hearing a friendly voice or seeing a familiar face, even just through a screen, is reassuring and will remind you that you’re not alone in these

trying times. Remember that we’re in this together.

Reality Check

At Loma Linda Academy, there are many extracurriculars and clubs. One of them is Reality Check.

Reality Check works to provide LLA students with skits and plays that have a valuable meaning in them. Reality Check also happens in the elementary side of campus.

The directors are Josefine Garcia and Lauren Jones. Krystal Checo, a writer, said in previous years Reality Check taught drama to the other schools on our campus.

They were planning to continue that tradition this year, but, it was derailed by the Corona virus pandemic.

Jasmine Garcia, a Reality check director, said Reality Check as an art form. “Reality Check is in my opinion, very artistic. We are all artists using the stage as a platform to share our voice.

It’s something that takes a lot of time and practice and every actor pours their heart and soul into what they do and it shows.

We have actors practice the art of theatre and drama, and scriptwriters that practice the

art of writing and supply us with their beautiful creations that make our show.

We work like a machine together but we’re also all very different.” Jasmine Garcia is heavily inspired by her peers in Reality Check. “I’ve been acting professionally since I was five years old and I’ve always wanted to act in school plays. When I heard that the high school had a drama group I knew I had to join.

I loved my first year as an actor so when I heard I was being made one of the directors I flipped.

It’s my passion project. Working alongside two very creative minds, Lauren Jones as my co-director and Noah Hernandez as our head writer, pushes me to my creative limits and makes me want to go beyond that. In my mind, they’re a huge inspiration for what we’re about and what we do.”

The talent show is now on Instagram, starting yesterday, May 1. There are six submissions and they will be played through the rest of the week. Voting will take place this Sunday may 10.
