I would like to address an issue not widely talked about with high school students: sexual harassment.

This is classified as harassment involving the making of unwanted sexual advances or obscene remarks, and abuse.

The number of sexual harassment cases for adolescents are quite high, with many of those coming from dating partners and relationships. According to LoveIsRespect. org, “Nearly 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from a dating partner in a single year.” They have also emphasized that “Among female victims of intimate partner violence, 94% of those age 16-19... were victimized by a current or former boyfriend or girlfriend.” This kind of abuse can also be found in college students with “43% of dating college women… experiencing violent and abusive dating behaviors.”

Why is this important to us? Why should the student body of LLA care? The point is that many of these sexual harassment cases may be happening right under our noses and we are not aware of it. Most high school students go misinformed or not equipped to identify and deal with harassment and dating abuse.

Some may say that students are not educated on the topic, ever. Many experts argue that the school itself should take the responsibility of educating students starting in grade seven. Erin Prangley, associate director of government relations for the American Association of University Women says violent and aggressive behaviors, typically beginning between ages 12 through 18, have “the potential to contribute to sexual assaults, such as the case of Brock Turner at Stanford University,” referencing the January 2016 case about a former Stanford swimmer who sexually assaulted an unconscious woman was sentenced to six months in jail.

Although there are many types of harassment that may happen, one of the most common occurs in dating relationships. There are two main types of abuse that occur in relationships: physical and verbal.

In a quick overview by TeensHealth, signs of physical abuse in a relationship include “slapping, grabbing, shaking, smacking, kicking, and punching” in any way, even in a joking manner. Verbal abuse can be more extensive. Signs include anger when not given enough attention, criticizing the way the significant other looks and saying the person can’t find anyone else to date, keeping the person from seeing one’s friends or participating in a favorite activity, blaming the person

for their actions, and trying to force the significant other to go further intimately when you don’t want to.

There are ways students in this situation can help themselves. TeensHealth says, “If you feel that you love someone, but often feel afraid, it’s time to get out of the relationship-- fast.” Firstly, make sure you are safe. Ask a trusted friend or adult for help and support. Do not hesitate to call medical emergencies (911) or the police if you are attacked. “Assault is illegal, and so is rape-- even if it’s done by someone you are dating.” Avoid isolation.

Even if you are embarrassed or feel like you have nowhere to turn, this is when you need support the most. There are other ways to identify abusive relationships and ways to get help or help a friend on TeensHealth.org.

Loma Linda Academy has taken steps to help students who feel as if they are in abusive relationships or have been sexually harassed. In an interview with Pastor Mark, he stated that the school holds an open door policy, so that students may get help if they need it. He has also stated that the school is in the process of revising the sexual harassment policy to be more clear about what counts as sexual harassment and the punishments that follow. The school also encourages students who have been harassed to communicate with a counselor, Lynne Hattendorf, as an official statement or not, as soon as the harassment has happened. She will help you report any cases where “you have been hurt, someone has hurt you, or you have [or going] to hurt yourself, even if it’s verbal.” Pastor JO, LLA’s campus pastor, even offers spiritual help for students. When asked what kind of refuge God offers to victims, he says “theologically, when it comes to abuse, all I can say is that through the journey of Jesus we can see that He stands with the oppressed… He stands with those who have been marginalized including victims of abuse.” Pastor JO is also open to talk privately about any troubling situation you might be dealing with.

As a school community, we should be aware of the signs of abuse within our own walls and be willing to help others and ourselves when it comes to abuse.

Pastor JO says, “[As a Christian community] we should stand up for the oppressed. God is showing His refuge by the community of believers that we are, so it is our responsibility to be that refuge for victims and those who are fleeing from being victims.”

The LLA maintenance department plays a big role in the school. They are important and necessary to make sure the school offers a sense of comfort and belonging to all students who attend. Mark Brettnacher, Jesse Brieno, and Armando Campos are just a few members of the maintenance department who work extremely hard for students at LLA.

There’s a New Roadrunner in Town

Last year, Loma Linda Academy’s badminton coach Betty Ong retired. Now, LLA has a new coach, James K. Ho. He said he accepted coaching the LLA badminton team “through the recommendation from the previous badminton coach of LLA.” Before he came to LLA, he had experience in coaching at three different places: Toronto, Ontario, and Canada. He said he is going to coach this team in his best abilities through his experience with the goal to “teach them discipline, sport spirit and fairness in calling line calls, and learning to play and excel in their badminton capabilities.”

He believes that Loma Linda Academy badminton team would be able to get the interhigh schools championship, but do the students believe that he can lead them there?

We decided to ask the badminton team how they felt about the new coach and how they think the season for them will be. Marcus Abejar said “I think this season is going to be great we have a very strong team and I believe that with hardwork and dedication we can get through the season with zero losses.” We hope that this works out for the badminton team for the remainder of this year.

Fannie Lou Hamer

(Oct. 6, 1917 – Mar. 14, 1977)

Fannie Lou Hamer was a voting rights activist and civil rights leader. She was instrumental in organizing Mississippi Freedom Summer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and later became the Vice-Chair of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party. She also coined the phrase: “I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired”.

Katherine Johnson

(August 26, 1918 - present) age 98 years

Katherine Johson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America’s highest civilian honor for her contributions to the United States’ aeronautics and space programs. She was a physicist and mathematician who made calculated the trajectories, launch windows, and emergency back-up return paths for many flights from Project Mercury and the 1969 Apollo 11 flight to the Moon.Her calculations were critical to the success of these missions.

Lewis Howard Latimer

(Sept. 4, 1848 – Dec. 11, 1928)

Inventor Lewis Latimer played an important role in the development of the light bulb. In 1881, Latimer patented a method for making carbon filaments allowing light bulbs to burn for hours instead of minutes. Latimer also drafted the drawings that helped Alevxander Graham Bell receive a patent for the telephone.

The typical American probably has the idea that extreme racism, Jim Crows laws and targeted oppression were hundreds of years ago when in fact they occurred to a great extent all the way into the 50s and early 60s. Even nowadays there are still visible signs of obvious oppression to people of color in the United States. It is very easy to forget all the struggle and fighting in black history. It is even easier, especially in an newer generation of post Y2K babies, to forget that complete civil rights for African Americans wasn’t achieved until 1968. Meaning that our parents, or really anyone over 48 for that matter was around and growing up in a different United States that we live in today. A country where an entire group of people were purposely oppressed simply because of the color of their skin. The purpose of black history month is not to raise up and exalt African American peoples, it is to instead shine light and provide a more in depth education of black equality and civil rights. Struggles that were not only faced in our history as a nation, but are also faced every day by youth and adults all across the country alike.

Marisa Sugiono went to “Thai Spoon 2” in Loma Linda and tried some of the food that they serve there. The first one Marisa tried was the drunken fried rice, she really enjoyed it and says “the rice is really good but a little bit spicy.” The second food Marisa chose to try was the yellow curry the owner said that this was one of their most popular food choices. Marisa said “the yellow curry is also a little bit spicy but tastes really good.” I asked Marisa if she thought this would be an environment for teens and if she would recommend it to anyone she said “this would be a perfect place to take a date or come here with friends the food is a little bit spicy but not pricey, so if you are into spicy food I would recommend it.” So if you want some good spicy thai food then please make your way over to the “Thai Spoon 2” in Loma Linda.
