New Years

resolution

We all have been a victim of procrastination. Some benefit while others may not. We all have been told not to procrastinate because it causes stress and it doesn’t help us later on the future when we become adults. “Not to procrastinate” is a New Year’s resolution that Christer Jorgensen (12) has made a goal for himself. School is far from being easy. There are many

Prayer is viewed as communication between a

person and God. God listens and hears all of our prayers whether we think He does or not. Praying shouldn’t be just a way to ask God for what we want, it should be a daily task that is professed genuinely to God for all He has done for us. To “pray intentionally” is what Megan Eisele (10) has made her New Year’s resolution to be. We all have a type of food that we find addicting and

discovered that are impossible to stop eating. To “eat less Cheetos” is what Michael Kelly (9) will try to accomplish.

Having a balanced diet that is moderated is important. Too much of something can affect us negatively. Many people have different diets; some are vegetarian, pescatarian, vegan. Some people have their diet because they either chose to or that is how they were raised. To “go vegan” is a resolution Marcel Serrano (9) has set as a goal.

There are people who are extroverts and introverts. Being shy or feeling that you don’t have a voice can affect you personally. Everyone wants their voice to be heard and their opinions known. It is important that we all respect what others have to say. “To speak out more” is what Savannah Bonney (10) has determined her New Year’s resolution to be.

When the colder weather comes around, having a wardrobe with warm clothes is an essential. Layers and thick clothes are important and are needed in a wardrobe. It can be challenging to find certain warm clothes that fit your style and liking. To “find a warm dress” is something Chloe Hegstad (10) hopes to find.

Healthy

lifestyles

It is 2017 which means it is time to start up your new routines to achieve a healthy goal to accomplish over the year. There are many things you can do to boost your health and apply easy habits into your everyday routine to be happy and healthy. I asked a few students what health meant to them. Sarah Saade (9) said that health to her meant eating good and working out. Izzy Rengifo (11), said that not only did health mean eating healthy, but also “having a good relationship with God, because all things are possible through him.” Marylaila Lowe (10), said a healthy habit that has positively affected her is “eating a bunch of fruit.” She says that this makes her feel good and is “better than snacking on chips.” Marco Ferrando (9), says, “I try to eat breakfast everyday and try to eat a bagel or a banana. When I eat breakfast I feel better.” Though eating healthy is a big part of health, being active is very important as well. I was curious to see if many classmates try to reach their goal to be active for at least sixty

minutes a day. Brianna Vazquez (11), said she is able to meet her goal of sixty minutes because of sports. Ferrando said he definitely gets in his 60 minutes by doing physical activities in his PE class, practicing soccer after school and sometimes going on bike rides after practice. Even though many students are able to fit in their 60 minutes of activity a day due to participating in school sports, many students are not able to meet their 60 minute goal due to an overload on homework and stress at school. Rengifo said, “No because school is hard and stressful.” Rengifo went on to explain that she isn’t able to meet her 60 minute goal everyday because of her overload of homework. It uses up most of her energy so she would rather sleep. Another way you can be healthier this year is to get your recommended amount of sleep. We all know we are supposed to receive about 8-10 hours of sleep a night, but due to distractions like Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and Netflix, we tend to waste many hours that we should be spending asleep. Sleep is essential

to health. Without the proper amount of sleep you are not able to perform your daily tasks to your best abilities, you’re lazy, fatigued, can increase weight gain, and more! Make sure this year, you make a point to eat healthier, be active, and try to spend a little less time on your social media accounts, so you can receive your proper amount of sleep.

Creative Corner Showcase of Student Creativity

My whole life I always wondered why Do bad things happen to good people, Then God told me that the world is just full of evil He mentioned that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, So now you depend on him longer and longer God just wants the best for us, that is why He sent his son down to rescue us from this world full of evil dust All we have to do is trust and obey Him, Even till the end of the age,for God himself will live with us and we will give him all the glory, honor and praise. We will not measure time by years, and no more pain, sorrow, or fears, but live with Jesus for eternity and forever he will be our mighty king So look to the future for victory will be ours, if we believe in the God who made the sun, moon, and the stars.

Fresh Out Of

junior high

Making the transition from Jr. High to High school can be an exciting, scary and intimidating process. Often times the student body is larger, making you a new fish in a much larger pond. For others the surroundings might be the same, but the academics are challenging and the expectations are much higher. Freshmen year is a year where incoming students from Jr. High enter into a new environment and become one with the high school. When entering into high school there are going to be many new changes like, faculty, teachers, students, friends, campus, books, and you. Change is a growth process that are essential and a part of life. Everyone experiences changes; some faster than others, and some slower than others. Not everyone’s growth process is the same; everyone grows at their own pace. Being a newcomer in high school comes

10

with pros and cons. The pros would be noontime activities, more food options, electives, a bigger campus, and the cons would be finals, busy schedule, stress, etc. 9th grade out of all four grades is said by most that to be the easiest year. Even though freshman year is said to be the easiest year, that does not make it a year to slack off. Managing your time well is an important tool that will be needed throughout high school. Having motivation and endurance will help one to push themselves to do the best they can and strive for success. 9th grade comes with a lot of ups and downs just as any grade does. It also comes with a lot of new exciting experiences that were not a part of Jr. High. Your freshman year of high school marks the beginning of an important high school journey – one that will, hopefully, lead you to a great college education. High school is not what

some expected it to be. Jake Ratana (9) said, “There are more food choices other than the cafeteria.” On Wednesdays, students sell Cuca’s in availability to all the students, while on Thursdays they sell Boba. And in the Campus Ministry Center (CMC) also known as The Cafe, ministry directors sell food items to hungry students. Most students come into high school with expectations or none at all. Many have different expectations than others and some can relate to one another. Marco Fernando (9) responded, “I expected when coming into high school to make upperclassmen friends.” Students at the high school have different favorable memories than others. There has been many student activities throughout the school year and there are more to come. For Fernando, his most favorite part about high school was SA Picnic and Ratana his most favorite

part was banquet. Michael Kelly (9) said, “This year is great. I like what is going on with the ministries.” Eldon Borillo (9) commented, “It’s [freshman year] been great. My most favorite part was beach day.” There are more events to come like: camp-out, swim, golf, and softball. Campout is available to all classes where the upper and lower classmen go to their own destinations for the weekend. Fernando said, “I am looking forward to camp-out.” Ratana said, “I am looking forward to swim season.” Ninth grade is thought to be exciting because it is a new environment in comparison to Jr. High. However, there are more students, more classes, shorter class periods, more responsibilities, and harder tests. Brett Strauss (9) stated, “It’s different in comparison to Jr. High and elementary because there is more stress and things to do.” Shailani Skoretz feels that Jr. High has prepared her for high school.

“Jr. High has prepared me because in Jr. High they gave us a lot of homework just as they do now. Freshman year is busy, I can’t help being busy. I wouldn’t change anything about this year because this year has been fun.” Gabriella Rodriquez (9) stated her first year in high school has been fun and she has enjoyed the many experiences it has had to offer her. “My first year has been fun. It’s different because the Jr. High said they were preparing us for high school, but freshman has been easy going.” There are many conflicted feelings about the first year of high school. Most students experience 9th grade and will grow from their experiences. The experience of high school is to grow and learn from past decisions into the young adult that we all will be soon. Freshman year is the foundation for all other grades in high school. Even though 9th grade may be thought of as an easy year, it is important and significant

to all high school students. The first year of high school is an important start for all students; it allows students to understand and become part of what high school is about, having fun, studying hard, growing into oneself, making new experiences and learning from them.

Christmas

break Avner Shryer

Students had Christmas break from December 19th to January 2nd. Many students enjoyed their break by receiving memorable gifts this Christmas. Kristen Sihotang said he got shoes for his Christmas and also enjoyed a trip rock climbing over break. There are many students who enjoyed their break at home. Julia Massy also enjoyed Lindsey Tiyakun

her break with her family. She said her break was “very mediocre.” She went “to get a dozen Krispy Creme donuts” with her sibling, Besides the school works, she was able to relax with a lot of sleeping. It is good to relax at home and to enjoy your break. However, it is good to spend the time by going outside of your house as well. Linsey Tiyakun went to San Francisco for her break. She said she “went to union Square for Christmas Shopping.” It is good to stay in America, but it is also good to travel farther. There are some students who went outside of America for their break. Emily He and David Rho went to Hawaii. They enjoyed their

Julia Massey

trip with their family and had very good time. Emily said that she was able to see many different beaches, turtles, and all kinds of fish. Overall, this Christmas break was good and relaxing time for students.
