The 2020-2021 LLA Impact Fund focused solely on funding for approximately 300 additional 1:1 devices and accessories. The continued integration of technology in the classroom allows students the opportunity to collaborate more, be more creative, and improve their critical thinking skills. Technology based learning also gives teachers immediate feedback in order to better meet the individual needs of each student.

Golf Tournament 21st Annual LLA Roadrunner Golf Classic

21st Annual Presented by

In a year that has seen numerous events cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 21st Annual Roadrunner Golf Classic, sponsored by Burgeson’s cautiously proceeded with success. Abiding by all golf course, county, and CDC guidelines, Loma Linda Academy hosted their annual golf tournament on Sunday, September 20, 2020, to raise funds for student aid. A full field of 144 golfers converged on Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon (Beaumont, Calif.) on a beautiful sunny day. Golfers were eager to enjoy a day out of the house and on the links. Some aspects of the tournament were modified due to certain restrictions but these changes certainly did not deter the fun to be had and the support for our students. All proceeds from the golf tournament go directly towards helping students attend Loma Linda Academy. The Annual Report, due out next Fall, will have a complete report on the tournament. Thank you to all of our sponsors and supporters of the LLA Roadrunner Golf Classic.

Admissions

Business Department

The Admissions Office reaches out to prospective families and helps them with the process of applying to LLA. They hold many events and schedule individual tours to show these families the LLA campus.

The Business Office is responsible for tuition billing and payments, accounts payable, financial aid administration, and all other financial duties.

November 1 TK/Kindergarten Roundup – 48 students attended with their families November 9-12 Fall Admissions Tours – 81 students visited with a principal either during the event or by Zoom after the event February 8-11 Virtual Meet the Teachers week for the Elementary. Families join on Zoom to hear from teachers in the specific grade that their child will be attending February 24 Virtual Parents’ Night for the Junior High and High School. March 1-15 Re-enrollment period for our current families for the 2021-2022 school year

IT Department In addition to their normal routine of making sure all information systems and devices are functioning properly, the IT department has primarily focused their energies on supporting teachers with the Swivel camera system technology being utilized with remote learning. The department has also been busy creating and managing Google accounts for all students, allowing them to access the resources they need.

Plant Services Aside from the normal maintenance that takes place during the course of a school year, LLA’s department of Plant Services has been tasked with the hard work of making sure our campus is safe for our students, faculty, and staff.

Plant Services Projects • Upgrading landscape around campus • Keeping all vehicles in working order and ready for use when activities return to normal • Installing new roof and gutters on the cafeteria and library (JH and HS) • Preparing for new marquee and signage at entrance of Academy Way (coming in March) • Upgrading irrigation controllers across campus to a system that will measure and efficiently distribute water and help with conservation.

Updates The ongoing pandemic has caused our music and athletics programs to alter or even pause their activities. These programs are adapting to state and county health guidelines as they relate to music and athletics.

Athletics In late July of 2020, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), the state’s governing body of high school athletics, announced their plans to move all fall sports to the spring of 2021. Under the direction of school, conference, county, and state directives, athletics has experienced a roller coaster of a year. During the Fall season, workouts were conducted in flag ball, volleyball, cross country, and basketball. In December, the CIF placed a ‘hold’ on all practice and competition start dates due to a surge in COVID-19 cases throughout the state.

While the plans to return to a competition schedule are currently still on hold, the LLA Roadrunners athletic department has resumed practices/workouts for the following sports: baseball, basketball, softball, and soccer. These workouts are being conducted under the strict guidelines from the California Department of Public Health Guidance for Youth Sports.

As of early February (2021), competition is scheduled to resume in the sports of golf and swimming. The hope is that additional sports will receive clearance for competition in the coming months, once restrictions are lifted.

Updates Music All music instruction and performance has moved online or virtual. Here is a summary of how the music department is adapting to the current situation.

Strings Program

LLA Symphony Orchestra During the first semester, students had a choice to participate in at least two of the following course modules: Module 1 - Basic Theory and Composition Students used online tools such as musictheory.net to practice chord analysis, harmonic progression, interval identification and ear training. Basic composition assignments such as basic melody and using a circle progression were part of the assigned material. Module 2 - Performance Preparation Practice Students would present pieces to their group class that they were working on in their private lessons. In this module, they would receive constructive feedback from their peers and the instructor. Module 3 - Group Recording Project Students worked on the “Faure’: Pavane” with the goal of either meeting in-person for a recording session OR sending in their audio and Zoom video for integration to the group video. The result of their work can be seen here: https://youtu.be/-itx5IVCU6E Module 4 - Basic Conducting and Score Reading Students learned basic conducting patterns and score reading. They demonstrate their work live on Zoom or send in their recorded videos for feedback and grading.

Band and Choral Departments Band and choral students spent their first semester practicing individually, collectively through Zoom, or virtually in small groups. Students individually, or within their small groups, recorded their part and submitted it for periodic grading. In December, the wind symphony joined La Sierra University’s Wind Ensemble to create a virtual band video of ‘Leroy Anderson’s Christmas Festival’. While chapels and assemblies are prerecorded, great efforts are put toward creating opportunities for students to connect with Jesus and to practice living for Him through our 4 core values of emotional intelligence, respect, integrity, and grit. Here are some of the lessons students are learning:

This school year, the Campus Ministries department launched 12 ministries for students engage with each other on Zoom, YouTube, and Instagram.

Spiritual Theme - “I Am” - During the first week of each month and during our biennial Weeks of Prayer, students explore who God is by His many names and characteristics. September - Hispanic American Heritage Month - Students and staff members shared about their Hispanic heritage and what it means to them. October - Emotional Intelligence Month - Students explore emotions: What they are, why God gave them to us. November - Students celebrate the Veterans in our community and took time to express gratitude to God and others. Students donated 90 shoeboxes full of gifts to share the gospel with kids around the world through Operation Christmas Child. December - The 5 Love Languages - Students explore concepts from Gary Chapman’s work on the 5 Love Languages: Students travel back in time to the set of a Mr. Roger’s Neighborhoodstyle show where they meet people in the neighborhood who actively show love in these 5 different ways. Students wrote almost 600 handwritten Christmas cards to show love to senior citizens in the neighborhood.

Life Groups is a small groups ministry that has hosted 11 online gatherings. The Worship Team has produced 18 worship videos. These videos have over 5,000 views on all our platforms. The podcast ministry called The Outlet, has produced 17 episodes on Spotify and Apple Podcast. They have had over 1,000 listens and over 200 downloads. The Birthday Team sends out email greetings for all JH and HS students and faculty on their birthdays. So far, they have sent over 220 emails. The Game Nights Team has hosted over 20 breakout zoom rooms with almost 100 students participating. There have been seven Life Cast podcast episodes with Pastor Baron. These episodes have accumulated over 1,000 views. Overall, the tech and media team have produced over 150 videos with more to come!!

January - Healthy Habits - Students learn the process of building healthy habits and breaking bad habits with persistence and perseverance. February - Black History Month - Students observed Black history through poetry, student videos about their heritage, stories, and virtual interviews with notable and inspiring Black Americans.

Elementary Elementary Grades TK-6 This year has brought so many changes on campus, but through it all, teachers have been able to stay connected to their students in a variety of ways. Here are some updates to campus life.

HyFlex Learning To accommodate the needs of all of our families, LLAE has implemented a Hybrid Flexible learning model that allows for parents to choose whether their kids will be On-Campus Learners (OCLs) or Remote Learners (RLs). Teachers have adapted to teaching RLs via Zoom meetings utilizing new Swivl Robot technology. Teachers have been diligently working to tackle a significantly increased workload in planning, organizing, and meeting the needs of their students.

6th grade “Mayan Projects” gave students a chance to imagine, create and learn about the ancient culture.

Distance learning provides students with an opportunity to share and learn when they are not able to be present in the classroom.

Students put their cup-stacking skills to the test.

COVID Safety

2020-2021

There have been campus updates and procedures to keep kids and staff safe. These measures are in compliance with guidelines for the waiver LLA received from San Bernardino County to re-open our TK-6 campus for on-campus learning:

• Improved air filtrations in classrooms • Frequent hand washing

• Desk shields on every student’s desk

• Daily cleaning/disinfecting of classrooms and high-touch surfaces • Required facial coverings on campus

• Keeping students in stable cohorts (at dropoff, dismissal, recess, and lunch) • Daily health screening for staff and students • Regular COVID-19 testing for staff • COVID-19 vaccines available for staff • Virtual staff meetings • Quarantine required for individuals exposed to someone who tests positive for COVID-19 • Class quarantine required if an individual in a classroom tests positive.

Changes to the Learning Environment • All field trips have been suspended. • Students work individually instead of doing group or partner projects. • Music and STEM Computer rotations have been suspended due to budget and COVID safety concerns. The librarian travels to classrooms each week for storytime and students continue to have P.E. once a week in the gymnasium or outdoors. • Virtual pre-recorded chapel/assembly videos are presented since large gatherings are not allowed. Junior High Junior High Grades 7-8 Family Blessing

Sabbath, August 22: LLA Junior High has a practice of starting the school year with prayer for the people, programs, and places that make up the Junior High campus. The “Family Blessing” runs about 45 minutes and is a prayer walk through campus to pray for the lives and events that will shape each student in the coming school year.

Curtis Middle School Christmas Food Basket Project The goal is to collect enough food to fill boxes for 25 students. This is our seventh year to help the desperate situations that exist just down the street. Gifts provided food for young people in San Bernardino to eat during their winter break.

Junior High MAP Testing

Replacing what many remember as ITBS tests, junior high students have been on-campus twice over the past few months for MAP testing. MAP Growth tracks students’ growth over time, wherever they are starting from and regardless of their grade. For instance, if a 7th grader is actually reading like a 9th grader, MAP Growth will be able to identify that. Or, if a 8th grader is doing math like a 6th grader, MAP Growth will identify that, too. It is incredibly important for a teacher to know this information so that they can plan instruction efficiently.

High School High School Grades 9-12 Teachers and students have been working hard in the midst of distance learning. Despite distance learning, teachers and staff are keeping students engaged with projects in multiple classes and groups. The Youth-to-Youth Club adopted two families from Inland Housing Solutions for Christmas. Presents and food were delivered to the families during the Christmas break which were joyfully received. The families created a poster, shared photos and expressed their thanks to the club. The TIE program is a sequence of technology classes that supplement the regular academic program and are designed to prepare students for professions in a wide range of high tech fields. Students built and launched gliders recording maximum flight time as part of their project. The Yearbook class has been having a monthly contest for students to send in photos from home. This student won a Jamba Juice delivery from Ms. Lewis, yearbook teacher. Biology students built models of animal or plant cells with various organelles. Some students built their models out of cake while others used play dough and styrofoam. One student even created their entire cell in Minecraft.

AP US History AP US History students just completed a ‘Brown Bag’ project which looked at many of the landmark Supreme Court cases throughout our history. The students created a brown bag that included the facts of the case, constitutional issue in question, and historical significance. They also included eight items in the bag that represented different aspects of the case.

US History US History students are currently working on a World War II oral presentation that will be shared with their classmates. Many different topics are being covered, such as The All American Girls’ Baseball League, comparing and contrasting the Sherman and Panzer tanks, and the Navajo Code Talkers. The oral presentations consist of using 4-6 slides to share the information on their topic.

Students from the Class of ‘23 enjoyed a Saturday night outdoor vespers together with food, music and worship.

The High School Student Association hosted an egg-toss for class competitions.

Economics Students are beginning a 14-week stock market project. During this timeframe, they track the daily changes of three companies. Students also look at the history, their successes and failures, primary products, and revenue of each company.
