Prepare for a COVID-19 Test Although COVID-19 testing is often viewed as a painful experience, that is not inherently true. There are a few things people who are going to get tested should know before they go and take one.

There are three different types of tests one could take, a molecular, antigen, or an antibody test.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a molecular test takes samples with a nasal swab, throat swab or saliva test. In some locations you can get a result with this test on the same day or up to a week. Molecular tests are also highly accurate. Antigen tests consist of a nasal or throat swab test, a result can be given in an hour or less.

The requirements for community service and WEE hours have not been modified due to COVID-19. However, the office is still accepting hours done last year for either this or last year.

How many WEE hours are required?

WEE is a total of 100 hours to graduate and can be done at any time during the 4 years of high school. You are given 5 high school credits for completing these hours.

Community service is 25 hours per year.

You can work for teachers after school. The elementary and high school teachers can have workers.

The elementary teachers can only have student workers after the students have left for the day.

You can make cards for senior living communities or write letters reaching out to family, friends, or church members. You can volunteer at LLUC UReach at http://ureachlluc.com/volunteer. You can also volunteer in a friends office, help clean, babysit, or help at your church.

How can students gain hours without putting others at risk?

Make sure to social distance, wear your mask, wash your hands in any activities you do. If you don't feel comfortable going out of your house, there are options stated above in "How to get Community Service hours?"

RBG: The Journey to Being An American Pioneer

On September 18th, 2020, Supreme Court Justice, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, passed away due to complications from metastatic cancer of the pancreas. According to NPR, Ginsberg was considered a feminist icon. In the words of Chief Justice John Roberts, “We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherished colleague.”

Serving for twenty-seven years on America’s highest court, Ginsberg fought for human rights across the board.

-Chief Justice John Roberts After a lot of hard work, Ginsburg was offered a clerkship with Judge Edmund G. Palmieri of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. She worked in that position from 1951 to 1961. After working with Palmieri, Ginsburg received many job offers from many large law firms, however she denied them, and returned to her alma mater, Columbia.

In 1955, Ginsburg’s first child, Jane, was born. It was not for another ten years that the miracle of life would take place again, in two different ways. Ginsburg gave birth to her son James in 1965, and according to the Academy of Achievement, that same year, Ginsburg wrote her first textbook, Civil Procedure in Sweden (1965).

Two years prior to writing Civil Procedure in Sweden (1965), Ginsberg began teaching at law schools.

According to The Supreme Court Historical Society, Ginsburg was hired

by Rutgers Law School in Newark, New Jersey in 1963 and worked there for nine years. In 1972, Ginsburg began teaching at Columbia Law School for eight years.

During her time of teaching at these universities, Ginsburg also worked in some other areas. According to The Supreme Court Historical Society, 12

Ginsburg worked as a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences in Stanford, California from 1977-1978. During the 70s, Ginsburg was also a litigator for many sex discrimination cases, and in 1973, she played a key role in launching the Women’s Rights Project.

Regarding equal rights, Ginsburg was also a leader in the American Civil Liberties Union, or ACLU. According to The Supreme Court Historical Society, Ginsburg was a general counselor from 1973-1980 and was on the National Board of Directors from 1974-1980. In 1980, Ginsburg was appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit by President Jimmy Carter.

After working in the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit for thirteen years, Ginsburg was finally moved up to the highest court. It was Bill Clinton who extended the invitation to Ginsburg in June of 1993. On the 10th of August 1993, Ginsburg proceeded to take her seat as the second woman ever on the Supreme Court.

For twenty-seven years., Ginsburg worked on the highest court in America. She was considered an American Pioneer for equal rights regarding gender, sexuality, race, religion, and many more. May she rest in power.

El Dorado Fire

Covid- 19 Detrimental Effects on Local Businesses

Covid -19 has led to one of the largest economic depressions since the Great Depression of the 1930s. According to reuters.com, this pandemic has led to shrinking of the US economy by roughly 30%. Small businesses have been hit extremely hard by the lack of customers, but in the face of unfortunate circumstances, local businesses have been adapting to new changes to get through this pandemic.

According to Joe Ly, owner of the Boba Tea House, business in the town of Loma Linda has been cut in half. This declining trend has put a major dent in the profits of small businesses.

Najwa Medina, a caterer and owner of the Najwa’s Mediterrean Cuisine, has experienced a huge cut in her business. Medina is the caterer for Loma Linda Academy, and due to the Covid-19 pandemic the school has been “closed.” For Medina, transitioning to having more Covid-19 precautions was not a huge change. She said, “As for safety precautions we always operated with the most caution and followed health regulations from day one.”

Jonathan Pastrama, an assistant manager of UReach Thrift, said, “In the first months we had to close the store, and little by little we have been [able] to reopen again.”

As a result of the pandemic, Boba Tea House had to go through some major changes. Ly said, “Immediately we decided to go cashless to reduce hand to hand contact.

We also installed shields in our front service area. All sit down furniture ... were removed.

All staff members were provided two washable masks and now we have disposable [masks] as well.”

Due to the lack of customers, the local businesses in the community have been struggling financially. Both Medina and Ly, had to lay off a good portion of their

staff. One of the hardest things for Medina, during this pandemic, was having to lay off hardworking staff with no promise of them returning back to the restaurant.

At UReach Thrift, the donations are being handled with more care than ever before, to make sure that they are safe for the general public. “We are following all the safety codes against Covid: social distance, wearing masks, hand sanitizing, taking temperatures,” said Pastrama.

There are many negatives to running a business during 2020. “The bills do not go away, rent, utilities, fees, and taxes are due, as a business owner juggling the financial

amount of customers. “We get roughly 350 to 400 customers a day. The number has been steady,” he said.

Businesses need the help of the community to stay afloat.“We are continuously training and innovating. We hope we can provide new and exciting items in 2021. Running a business is definitely not easy, but if we continue to delight our guests and reduce wait time we will continue to grow,” said Ly. Customers can place their orders through bobateahouse.net. This way customers can avoid lining up, and just directly pick up their order.

Medina, said, “The community has been supportive, but not enough to keep us going. The bulk of my business was the catering and special events. It would be helpful to order trays of food or even just dinner to go.”

Pastrama said, “People could pay more attention to their donations. Sometimes those donations look so dirty, old, and are in a bad condition. They can consider not to donate those kinds of items or do a deep clean of them before bringing them here.”

Doing this will greatly help those who take care of those donations, and make it more safe for employees. Consumers can visit UReach Thrift at their store at the address 24871 Redlands Blvd, Loma Linda, CA 92354 or call the store at (909)-796-4400.

Small businesses are a vital part of our community’s economy and local culture. The pandemic is temporary, but the effects on the small stores can be long lasting. In order to keep these businesses alive, the community needs to support them, to make sure these effects are only temporary.

This is much fewer than the restaurant had before.

According to Pastrama, the thrift store now gets about 70 to 80 customers a day. This is way less than the amount of customers, UReach Thrift had received before the pandemic.

Pumpkin Bread Recipe

INGREDIENTS: • 2 cups all-purpose flour

• 1-1/2 sticks (3/4 cup) unsalted

• 1/2 teaspoon salt

butter, softened

• 1 teaspoon baking soda

• 2 cups sugar

• 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

• 2 large eggs

• 1 teaspoon ground cloves

• 1 15-oz can 100% pure

• 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

pumpkin (Ex. Libby’s)

• 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 325°F and set an oven rack in the middle position. Generously grease two 8-inch by 4-inch loaf pans with butter and dust with flour (alternatively, use a baking spray with flour in it).

Step 5: Turn the batter into the prepared pans, dividing evenly, and bake for 65 – 75 minutes, or until a cake tester inserted into the center comes out clean.

The Best Way to Zoom Through School

In these times when classes and many other important events are happening over Zoom, wvpeople must have a good connection to the internet. Although that is not something that everyone has access to, there are many things that can be done to improve upon what you already have.

If you are able to use an ethernet cable to plug into your router this is the best and fastest option. If your only option is wireless then try to be as close as possible to the access point and make sure there aren’t too many obstacles in between you and the access point.

An Update on Athletics

During quarantine, it has been difficult to go outside and be active.

With the start of the school year many were worried that sports would be canceled , however thanks to the efforts of athletic director, Lucio Camacho and coaches of LLA sports, students have been able to resume practices safely.

Safety precautions like mask wearing and social distancing, are practiced during all practices, but each sport has its own specific precautions.

Football has been practicing every Monday evening from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Javan Knowlton (12), “During football practice the coaches enforce mask wearing

and social distancing. We sanitize all equipment after every person uses it.”

Soccer teams have been practicing every Thursday from 4:30 PM-

and at the end. They have masking tape X’s where we put our bags and waters that are six feet apart. We can’t congregate in groups outside or in the gym but we can talk six feet apart.”

As for whether or not games are going to be possible, Camacho said, “We are always hoping, praying, and preparing for our seasons. We are following the state and county guidelines and we have been in Phase one since July 29th. We have already passed dates that we had games scheduled and will look into trying to salvage some games for the sports that should have already had games.”

It seems time will tell whether games will occur.

It didn’t seem like students would ever get the chance to play sports together again. Thanks to the effort of the coaches and the safety precautions that have been put in 6:00PM. Apple Turnovers

• 4 cups of water

Step One:

• 2 Tbsp of lemon juice • 4 apples - sliced

Dice the apples and let them soak in the lemon and water to prevent browning.

• 2 Tbsp of butter

Step Two:

• 1 cup of brown sugar

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).

Unfold the puff pastry sheets and cut them each into 8 equal sized pieces.

With your fingers, gently stretch out the dough and then scoop small portions of the apple filling into the dough. Fold the ends of the dough together and press the edges together firmly.

Over a medium heat, melt the butter.

Drain the apple water and add the diced apples into the melted butter, then cook and stir them for about 2 minutes. Add in the brown sugar and cinnamon, then stir and cook for two more minutes. Add in the cornstarch and stir for about a minute, or until the sauce is thick.

Place a sheet of wax paper over a baking pan, then place the turnovers on the wax paper with at least one inch between them. Bake the turnovers for about 25 minutes, until they are puffed and golden brown.

• 1 tsp of cinnamon • 1 Tbsp of cornstarch • 1 Tbsp of water • 2 puff pastry sheets (1.25 oz ea.)

• ½ cup of powdered sugar

Step Six: After the turnovers have cooled, sprinkle powdered sugar over them and enjoy.

Briefs According to the New York Times, as of October 28, 2020, there have been 8.89 M cases of COVID-19 total in the US, 228 K COVID-19 related deaths total in the US total, 923 K cases of COVID-19 total in California, and 17.55 K COVID-19 related deaths total in California. In San Bernardino County, there have been 64,131 total cases and 1, 073 COVID-19 related deaths.

Sophomores and Juniors took their PSAT on October 29, 2020.

They arrived at the school on Thursday morning to the LLA campus to take their test. Due to testing, Freshmen and Seniors had an asynchronous day on October 29, 2020.

On November 7, 2020, it was announced that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris had been elected to be the next president and vice-president of the United States of America respectively.

Student Leadership Leader

With the start of a new school year, Loma Linda Academy students are starting with a new group of leaders. At LLA, students have the opportunity to run for an office position whether it’s for the class or the entire school. Class officers are in charge of the class events such as vespers, class parties, class trips, and basically anything that has to do with only the same graduating class. The school officers, or also known as Student Association officers, are in charge of the whole school events such as the Christmas Banquet, Beach Vespers, Buns and Roses Vespers, afternoon activities, etc. The presidents have insight about the position and tips for how to win when others want to run for office.

The class of 2023 president, Soobin Jeon (10th), expressed how she felt winning her position in office, “It felt really nice because now I have the chance to lead my class in whatever we do so since I was vice president last year, that gives me a lot of insight on what happens in office and what we can do for our class so this year I think now that I have the chance to be president I can work with my officers to do more and learn from the experience we had last year.”

In class of 2024, president Benjamin Chun (9th), shared his plans for his class this school year under the circumstances, “Covid-19 has given us more restrictions than normal this year but, I said this during my campaigning speech; one of my biggest goals is to create regular zoom meetings for our class where we can just come in and socialize its gonna be a really laid back thing we can just game, hangout and talk together so basically you can do anything but its a little bit of time where we can just connect with our friends on zoom without really having the pressure

of like school and all the other things, just a time to relax and have fun with friends.”

Class of 2024 has been given a great president and should be a prosperous year for the freshmans as well as for the sophomore class.

The upperclassmen as well have been given responsible and reliable presidents that students can look up too and trust in leading the student body. In the junior class of 2022, president Julia Ko (11th), has words for her class of hope and trust, “Class of 22, I cannot believe we are already in our junior year. JUNIOR year.

SA President, Atalia Estrada (12th), has shared some tips for those who wish to run for office next year or even next semester! “My advice for those who want to run for office is to not run just because you think it’ll make you cooler or more popular or because your friends are doing it, but run for office because you believe you can make a positive impact. Make sure you have a passion for what you’re doing and it’ll make being that position so much more enjoyable and fun!”
