The recent weather in the Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas area has been causing major car accidents, most notably the one on Interstate 35 West. According to CNN, this wreck consisted of 133 vehicles. Photos and videos of this wreck show that least ten of these vehicles were large semi-trucks. Regarding the pile up, six people are reported to have lost their lives as of February 11, 2021, and about sixty-five people have sought medical treatment for any injuries they might have incurred. According to CNN, these numbers are expected to rise in the coming days. As COVID-19 continues to be threat, Pharmacies have began to offer the COVID-19 vaccine. According to CBS News, CVS and Walgreens are two drugstore chains that are among the pharmacies distributing the vaccine. Walgreens will only be giving out a limited amount of these COVID-19 vaccinations across multiple states and Puerto Rico. CVS’s approach is to have an initially roll out of COVID-19 vaccinations in about thirteen states. Other major pharmacy chains joining these two in the distribution are Walmart, Sam’s Club, Rite-Aid, and Costsco, however, not all of these companies will be distributing in California. February 12, 2021 marks the beginning of the Lunar New Year and ushers in the Year of the Ox. This holiday is the cause of major celebration in China, but due to COVID-19, things are more difficult this year. According to CNN, Beijing has urged their citizens to not travel this year, and to instead stay home. Some companies are even paying their workers an incentive so that they stay home. This is all in an effort to reduce COVID-19 rates. This is especially key since the travel during 2020’s Lunar New Year was part of what made the COVID-19 rates raise. It was the Weekend’s turn to perform at the Superbowl on February 7, 2021. The performance opened up with the Weekend on a stage resembling Las Vegas. A choir sang his song Call Out My Name to start the show off, and then the Weekend began to perform his song, Starboy. Then in classic Superbowl fashion, The Weekend performed a medley of his songs. To close off the show, The Weekend performed his latest hit, Blinding Lights. Editor-inChief Noah Hernandez

Lia Hutchins (9) stated, “I missed my 8th grade graduation, a ton of things for school as we all did and of course just parties my whole family would throw or just traveling to places.” Ashley Bvundura (10) said, “I have pretty much all medical field aunts and it honestly sucks that I can’t just hug them.” The USA is attempting to flatten the curve with shutdowns and recuring facemasks in public places. Harriet Tubman, an abolitionist, is set to replace Jackson as the new face of the twenty-dollar bill, due to her many accomplishments and deeds that she has done, for the United States. Jackson is considered to be a controversial president in recent years. Jackson first became a lawyer, and later on, became wealthy enough to own enslaved people. He, later on, became president of the United States. Jackson strongly supported the institution of slavery and is responsible for signing the Indian Removal Act, leading to the Trail of Tears, according to whitehouse. gov. Under the Obama administration, there was a push to change the $20 bill. One major candidate was the freedom-fighter, Tubman. She was born Araminta Ross in Dorchester County, Maryland, and later on changed her name to Harriet Tubman, when she married John Tubman, a free black man. Tubman was

Many proponents of the change state that having Tubman on the bill is essential for giving positive representation for AfricanAmericans. This could represent a positive shift Jordyn Wright (11) said, “Definitely a big effect because like always, there are people who don’t support certain things that others strongly believe in. And there will definitely be many people complaining that Jackson should not be removed, but sometimes change is good, and if this change is approved I would definitely be excited to hold a 20 dollar bill in my hand.” Keoni Pang (11) said, “I believe it will have a minor effect but shows a shift towards the right direction.” This change is expected to be seen on bills around 2025-2026, with the Biden administration, Chikwendu Okwandu (9) ramping up production of this said, “ I think this choice will new change. New Semester, New Study Tips BY CODY REGESTER

Students have just recently started a new semester at Loma Linda Academy, this new semester brings new classes for many people. These classes may require more work than what was expected of students in the past. To deal with this extra work some students have shared some things that help them keep up with schoolwork. Students have mixed opinions about virtual learning. Zane Rice (12) said “Some classes are harder to do, like math and science. Other classes haven’t been affected as much like English and Bible. It is definitely harder to pay attention now that we’re not in classrooms.” Andrew delaRoca (10) said that “It is very different, you have more freedom in-person to ask friends and other people, online you can’t talk to people if you don’t have their contact information. You have to form FaceTime calls if you want to have study sessions.” Leslie Rodriguez (10) shared some of the positives of online classes for her because she has zero period PE she can wake up later now that she doesn’t have to get to school early, teachers are also more accessible now, they answer messages faster and are more flexible with their office hours. Students seem to agree that there are positives and negatives to online school. Virtual learning has caused many students to change how they ap-

proach their schoolwork delaRoca said “It’s been hard having to learn how to use new programs” throughout the past year students have had to learn how to use many new tools like MyLLA, Zoom, Google Classroom, and Canvas. It has also let people change their schedules Rodriguez likes that she can stay up, later doing homework and get up later. “I can get more sleep now and can stay up later doing homework.”

“I recommend short sessions [of studying] with breaks in between.” -Andrew delaRoca Students have shared some tips that help them keep up with their studies. Rodriguez said that it is easier to study now “Since COVID hit it’s easier to start studying for tests,

7

for some tests, I start to study a few days before or I at least have a plan instead of just doing it as it comes.” delaRoca says that a study schedule can help too “You should prioritize classes and work in that order, … focus on something for at least 15 minutes and then take a break and then get back to studying.”

To be successful in classwork, make sure to stay organized. Organization helps in all areas of studying for success.

Five Love Languages BY NOAH HERNANDEZ

Love comes in many different forms. There is romantic love, familial love, and neighborly love just to name a few. Everyone shows somebody loves in one way or another, but how love is communicated would be what makes all the difference. In 1992, Gary Chapman came up with the concept of the five love languages. They are words of affirmation, acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time, and physical touch. To learn what your love language is, take the quiz on page (X) or visit 5lovelanguages.com.

Words of Affirmation

Acts of Service

If one’s preferred method of showing love is words of affirmation, then flattery would be the way to go with them. Phrases such as “I love you” and compliments are how they would show somebody that they love

It will be the little things that truly count with the people who prefer to show their love through acts of service. Helping out with the chores, making dinner, and helping out with pending tasks are the methods

Recieving Gifts

Quality Time

Those who prefer to show love through receiving gifts might seem materialistic, but it is more than just getting a random gift. The sentiment, thought, effort, and quality are all taken into consideration when receiving a gift.

These people consider time to be incredibly precious, and so they want to spend it wisely. Being attentive when they want your attention and being sure to check in on these people is what will show them that you love them.

Physical Touch Knowing your love language and the love language of those around you can help you when expressing your affection or gratitude towards them. It helps to know what their preferances are so that when appropriate, you know how to treat them.

People who prefer to show love through physical touch will gravitate more towards hugs, pats on the back, and affectionate touches on the arm or shoulder. They most likely will get near to anyone they feel attracted to or that they consider close to. 8

SENIORS BY LEILANI CALIXTO

For many high school students, senior year is the grade most people look forward to a senior trip, last banquets, last vespers, senior prank day, a graduation and so much more. This year it’s very different for the class of 2021 with online school and no gatherings. However, we can look back on the great years we spent together and be thankful for them. Seniors were asked what event they missed the most. 40.5% of the seniors surveyed said they missed Havasu the most. Lake Havasu is the senior class trip taken while the other students are MAP testing in the fall. Others also said they missed campout, handshake, banquet, Jr./Sr. Bible Camp, class games, government trip, talent show and vespers. On a scale from 1-5 on how motivated they felt for school it seems as though also 46% of seniors surveyed answer a three. 21% answered they have no motivation at all, and 3% said they were very motivated. On a scale from 1-5 for how worn out seniors feel at the end of the school day, 43% said they needed a nap at the end of the school day, 3% answered that they were ready to keep going. 31% prefer inperson learning and 3% enjoy distance learning. 12% answered that they’re struggling with mental health, and 9% said their mental health is great. Some students have been having difficulties this year including, personal fitness, trying to keep grades up without motivation, the fatigue from staring at a screen all day, checking all the different platforms, working through the stress,

and the lack of interaction. There are also some positives that have come out of distance learning including, more sleep, schedule flexibility, getting to stay in bed during free periods, no classes on Wednesdays, more independence, and more family time. All seniors surveyed are attending college next year, 72% are staying in California, 28% are not staying in

10

California. 19% are moving abroad and 81% are not moving abroad. Although senior year hasn’t turned out like students thought it would, they can still enjoy the little things. Knowing that all seniors are going through this together seniors can lean on each other for support.

The Anime Community BY ABIGAIL INOSTROZA

Getting bored of your regular shows? Or do you want to explore something new? Anime could be what you’re looking for. Since the COVID-19 pandemic started, we’ve all had to stay home to keep ourselves and everyone else safe. Sometimes staying at home can be really boring or you just need something to entertain yourself. Anime is a great way to entertain yourself and also even learn something or motivate yourself to do something you’re passionate about. Since the pandemic began, anime has become a trend and more people are starting to watch anime. There are so many different genres of anime that you would like such as, romance, comedy, drama, slice of life, mecha, shonen, shojo, and many more! Dean Se (12) said “It has helped me distract myself from some problems and struggles I’ve had.” Below is Dean Se’s Initial D shoes.

life and also help them learn something that could also help them overcome different obstacles they could be facing or are facing. Dean Se also said, “its given me a new view on certain aspects of life.” Watching anime has helped him achieve different points of views so he can understand others better and can help improve future friendships or even relationships. Some individuals can also gain new hobbies from watching animes such as watching “Your Lie in April” can inspire someone to pursue a life of music and know how to appreciate its beauty and meaning. Zach Flores (12) said, “It’s helped me become interested in things that I probably wouldn’t have experienced if I just watched stuff from here in the States. It’s also given my friends and I more things to talk about and share.” Below is Zach Flores Gundam collection.

Anime can be a form of escape of coping mechanisms for those who are struggling with different things in their

Having people to share conspiracies and theories about different anime shows is great and thanks to anime, there is a whole community where you 14

can make friends and share your love of a show or character. Interacting with others that have the same interests is a great way of staying social and staying safe during this time. Anime is also a great way of exploring yourself and even finding something new about yourself that you didn’t know before. Sebastian Diaz (12) said “They’ve been able to really cut deep and get raw emotions out of me that books, and TV and western cartoons really don’t or haven’t.” It’s incredible how so many people can be reached at a different level emotionally through anime than western cartoons could ever reach them. In the industry of animation, it takes a lot of money, time, and dedication to make just one episode of an anime show that it helps the viewers enjoy watching the anime more as the fans can see and admire the art work, animation, and effort put in the whole episode. Benjamin Dabucon (12) said “The amount of work and effort that’s put into things such as character design, animation, and musical score that makes watching an anime so enjoyable and even memorable, is one of my favorite aspects of the industry and anime as a whole.” Benjamin Dabucons Pop Figurinw from My hero academia.

Recommendations and Reviews and its plot, Benjamin had also mentioned his enjoyment of anime being because of, “The use of detailed writing and well-developed characters.” Character development is one aspect of an anime show that helps connect the viewer to the show as the audience can grow an emotional connection with the character and can see that character as their comfort character. A comfort character is a fictional character typically from an anime that they can identify themselves with and find immense comfort in. Having an emotional attachment to a character can be taken in both a positive and negative way as it depends on how attached the person is to the character. Some characters can impact a person in a positive way helping them learn moral and take those morals personally. Mckenna Davari (12) said “Each show/movie varies in their vision of how such a world is supposed to be no matter what the future holds and the major theme across the titles and watching different genres of anime allows myself to take back a different morals from each story.” Below we show Mckenna Davari with her anime themed board.

Haikyuu (show) A sports anime focuses on volleyball players that do their best and work hard to get to nationals. The main protagonist a devoted volleyball player that played throughout middle school but was slightly ostracized from his school but going to highschool, he found his team and make great memorable experiences throughout his high school years. He faces a few obstacles trying to make his way to nationals but his friends were always there to help him get through them. Rating: (9/10) The character development was a bit of a slow burn but was worth it at the end and there are many loveable characters that you can easily fall in love with. I love how it really valued friendship, hard work, and making your dreams a reality no matter how hard it gets. Anime is able teach the viewers of different morals and values that the characters may possess that the viewers can take from the show and apply it to their lives in a positive way. When a person starts watching anime they have the opportunity to watch an anime very mainstream or very unpopular or just not very known. Being careful with what anime’s you watch is important because not all animes are suited for everyone; there are animes that could be too intense for the viewers so reading reviews about the anime show before watching it is a great way to check if you want to watch it but don’t want to be surprised by what is shown. Twitter, Reddit, and other websites can give you great reviews of animes without spoiling anything

major for you but do be careful of TikTok reviews as they can sometimes contain major spoilers then it becomes a very sad time as you now know what the big secret was supposed to be or who wins in a fight or not.

Above shows Isabelle Gultom (12) with her anime collection. Isabelle Gultom gives advice for people who might be just starting to watch anime, “Take your time and have fun! Don’t be scared to watch animes that aren’t so popular and trendy. Also you shouldn’t be scared of older animes with old animations. Current popular anime’s wouldn’t be the way they were without the influence of the older ones.” If you are starting to watch anime, have fun and enjoy it and interact with the community, you could meet new friends with the same interests as you and you can learn new lessons and develop more social skills doing so.

Student Rooms BY ALLISON KIM

Haley Dugaduga

Kalee Cautivar

Kalee Cautivar (10) recently redecorated her room this past summer. She wasn’t too fond of what her room looked like before, so she wanted to switch things up a bit. She wanted her room to have a clean, simple, and cozy style, so she painted her walls lavender and rearranged her bed, desk, and other possessions. She says that she wanted to feel refreshed when she walked into her room. She also wanted her room to be welcoming. Her favorite thing in her room is the stuffed animal that her brother bought her from Korea.

Haley Dugaduga (11) renovated her room by herself at the beginning of quarantine. She wanted her room to be comfortable and make her happy. She also wanted to give off a minimalist feeling, but not too simple. She put many cute lights and figures on her shelves as well. It is a very Japanese inspired room. Her favorite thing about her room is the color schemes. She tried her best to buy things that stayed true to her theme. Her favorite item in her room is her LED cherry blossom tree that she uses as a night light.

Lynnae Garnet

Lynnae Garnet (11) says she paints her room sporadically. She said, “I think of cool ideas and just have at it on the first blank wall I can find!” The look she is going for is “Cartoon Chaos.” She wanted her room to be painted in a way that when you look at it, you have to take a few minutes to analyze everything that’s going on around you. Her favorite thing in her room is her computer. 16

Emyiah Burroughs

Krupa Kanji

Emyiah Burroughs (9) was inspired to decorate her room by seeing all the nicely decorated rooms on Pinterest. She wanted her room to give off chill and cozy vibes. “As you know, we’re staying at home now and most of our time is being spent in our rooms, so I wanted it to be a chill environment,” she said. Burroughs is continuously adding accessories and embellishments to her room day by day. Her favorite thing about her room is her tapestry on the ceiling.

Krupa Kanji (10) decorated her room with her family around two years ago. She wanted a nice space that fits her personality. She wanted a simple room with one color scheme and decided on light pink. Her favorite part about her room are all her small decorations that make her room personal.

Lia Hutchins

McKenna Davari

McKenna Davari (12) wanted her room to give off indie anime vibes. She wanted the style to have a mix of anime art from different shows to show the contrast in artwork. She started decorating her room with anime posters and pictures from her favorite scenes last September. Davari was inspired to decorate her room because of her love for anime. The aesthetics across the many different shows she’s seen has greatly influenced how she wanted to decorate her room. She also used multiple Pinterest boards for inspiration on how to lay out her posters. Her favorite thing in her room is her manga shelf which includes her manga, anime figures, and glass art that she has created of her favorite characters. 17

Lia Hutchins (9) has always loved antiques and things that look old, so throughout the years she found herself becoming more and more into the style, so wanted her room to fit it. Her room aesthetic is a combination between dark academia and a hint of light and royalty. She redecorated her room a year ago and now she loves how it looks. Her favorite thing has to be her desk area. She tried her best to find things to perfect the “back in the day” look. She also really liked her old photos and books.
