BRIEFS Loma Linda Academy’s annual Maker Faire is quickly approaching. Save the date in your calendars for April 26, 2020. Come to enjoy friendly competitions, Ted Talk style lectures in science, technology, engineering, math and service, otherwise known as S.T.E.A.M.S. and booths with engaging activities. The LLA Maker Faire is a great opportunity to experience S.T.E.A.M.S. in a hands on and education way. If you wish to hold a booth at the Maker Faire in 2020, the application deadline is February 28, 2020. Apply for a booth and learn more about the LLA Maker Faire at www.lla.org/makerfaire.

The campaigns for the 2020 presidential election continue. As of December 13, 2019, 14 candidates have dropped out from the democratic side and 1 candidate has dropped out from the republican side. This leaves Micheal Bennet, Joe Biden, Micheal Bloomerg, Cory Booker, Pete Buttigieg, Julian Castro, John Dulaney, Tulsi Gabbard, Amy Klobuchar, Deval Patrick, Bernie Sanders, Tom Steyer, Elizabeth Warren, Marianne Williamson and Andrew Yang for the Democratic candidates. Roque De La Fuente, Donald Trump, Joe Walsh and Bill Weld are remaining for the Republican candidates. The next Democratic debate is December 19, 2019.

Josefine Garcia and Lauren Jones are co-directors of Reality Check 1st Semester, they had a total of 17 actors, 4 writers and 2 directors The main theme of the play was how important it is to come together as a community, especially in times of need.

Trending Shoes

As the seasons change, so do styles and trends for clothing. But because of Loma Linda Academy’s uniform policy, the amount of different styles you can wear at school is limited. However, there is one article of clothing that isn’t heavily affected by this policy: shoes. This guide will help anyone that is trying to get some brand new “kicks” as well as stay in style.

There are many uses for shoes other than style, of course, particularly in athletic endeavors. One of the shoes that has been flying off the shelves of every store are Air Force 1’s by Nike. They come

in colors including but not limited to: black, white, red, blue, camo, and multicolored options are included as well. Nike Air Force 1’s have a thick bottom sole and come in NBA high, or NBA low sizes.

Russel Parker (9) who wears these shoes almost every day, says that these shoes are extremely comfortable and great for athletics. He recommends these shoes to just about anyone. The price of these shoes ranges from $45 to $200 depending on which style and size you choose, as well as where you buy the shoes from.

Another shoe that is popular right now are Converse’s Chuck Taylor All-Star high and low tops. These shoes are popular for their afford ability, style and wide range of designs. For instance: glitter, Hot Rod prints, camouflage prints or many other styles.

Shantelle Monsegue (10) has a pair of Chuck Taylor’s that she has had for about a year now. She says that these shoes are comfy and that they cost her around $70. She recommends these shoes to anyone who is looking for an affordable shoe. These shoes can be purchased on the Converse website from $35 to $85 depending on the size and design you choose.

If you are not looking for shoes that serve an athletic purpose, but you still want plenty of flair, consider purchasing a pair of Crocs. Crocs, Inc. is a shoe manufacturing company that mainly makes clogs and sandals, all held together by Crocs’ signature “Crocband.”

Crocs were popular in the early 2000s but started to decline in popularity over the years. However, recently crocs have started to once again rise in popularity.

Crocs on the website generally range from $49.99 to $74.99 and are available in men and women’s sizes.

Arianna Williams (9) often wears these shoes or some other form of sandal or clog. She says that they are comfortable and that she would recommend them to just about anyone. Adidas also makes caps and soccer balls so if you want to really customize your look, Adidas is a great option for that as well.

Green Waste Bins

If you have taken a walk around campus recently, you may have noticed that there are new green bins. These cans were implemented to contain food waste from leftover meals that are eaten on campus.

The bins are made to help organize our waste so that items that are not biodegradable end up being recycled instead of being tossed into the landfill.

These new bins are required

by California law to be placed in any “businesses that generates four cubic yards or more of commercial solid waste per week,� according to calrecycle. ca.gov.

The bins are sometimes difficult to find around campus because of the limited amount of cans. The amount of cans that can be placed around the school is mainly limited by the cost.

According to Mark Brettnacher, head of maintenance, the program is estimated to end up costing approximately $4000 campus wide.

Every so often, a compliance officer from the local city board may come to evaluate our school on the progress of installing these bins, and the school also has to pay for someone to come and pick up the bins, additional

costs according to Brettnacher.

The waste is taken to a facility where it is made into a type of fertilizer, which the company then sells to local stores such as Home Depot. The waste can also be used to create gas for the companies trucks.

The school plans to focus on installing the bins in the elementary, so that using the bins will become a habit for the younger kids.

Nonetheless, it is important to increase the use of the food waste bins around campus because it is required by state law and helps keep our community clean.

‘Tis the Season

Christmas is quickly approaching. From Las Posadas parades in Latin America to the Yule Log of Europe, Christmas can be found being celebrated in a wide variety of ways around the globe.

The Yule Log originated in Europe when the Norse people lived there. When the ancient Norse occupied the land known today as

decor of a traditional Yule Log. Also, what is known as a Yule Log today is a dessert. The cake-like dessert was first seen in the 17th century. From there, the Parisians made the Yule Log dessert popular in the 20th century. Though the sweet treat is not as popular today, it can still be found if sought after.

Happy the winter was coming to a close, the Nordic people would all gather together and feast on rich foods. Logs were decorated with holly, pinecones or ivy and anointed with wine and salt. From there, families would burn the logs. Ashes that came from the Yule Log were said to have medicinal properties, and even the ability to protect a person from evil.

On a smaller scale, literally, this tradition can still be seen today. The original Yule Logs were enourmous, according to history.com. Nowadays, families will typically burn a single, small log in the fireplace without all of the

event that can be found all across Latin America, the main focus is mostly on Mexico. “The roots of Las Posadas stretch deeply into Latin culture. It originated in Spain, but it’s been a yearly celebration throughout Mexico for over 400 years,” according to Fransiscan Media. The celebration is held to honor the journey that Mary and Joseph took in order to find a place to stay. This is where Las Posadas gets its name. Posada in English would be a place to stay, such as an inn.

Las Posadas is celebrated in an almost parade type fashion. There is a group of people who represent the Holy Family (Joseph and Mary) and they must reach the designated home, which represents the stable. Along the way,

the group stops by other houses, and when they stop, they sing a song. The song says that they are seeking “posada” and that they are travelers. The group is told that the place they have stopped is not an inn and they must keep moving. According to Fransiscan Media, once they reach the final destination, a song of celebration is sung and they eat a warm meal.

Patty Hernandez, (Full disclosure: Patty Hernandez is the mother of the author.), recalls her childhood regarding Las Posadas in San Jose De La Boca, Durango, Mexico. She remembers the song that was sung while walking from house to house, but her favorite part was always at the end. “In the evening there would be some kind of hot drink and a pastry. Then the kids would get [...] a goodie bag with treats, and so that was my favorite,” she said.

Las Posadas is a unique holiday in Mexico, especially in Hernandez’s home town. “It wasn’t common for children and adults to interact or work in any kind of activity together. It was more of adults making a request children complying or adults in their own little group [...] In this case they both worked toward a common goal. It was the entire community working toward finding a place for Mary and Joseph.”

In Ethiopia, the holiday season is a special time, just not the time one would expect it to be. Ethiopia observes a calendar different from the western, Gregorian calendar.

According to Ethiopian Treasures, their calendar uses a thirteen-month system. The calendar is always seven years and eight months behind the Gregorian

Holiday Wrapping

With Christmas just around the corner, it is the season of wrapping gifts to give to friends and family.

If you want to impress your gift recipients this year, you can spice up your gift wrap with Christmas-themed decorations and designs. To avoid over embellishing your gift, it is a good idea to use simple brown paper bag wrapping paper. Then, you can brighten up the

blank canvas with bright and eyecatching holiday ornamentation.

If your recipient is a music-lover, you could try wrapping your gift with music sheets for a classy look.

If you want to add a little something to your gift without having to put in a lot of time and effort, you can simply add Christmas garnishing to the ribbon.

Tying the ribbon with pine branches, sprigs of rosemary, holly, kumquats, or

paper snowflakes can add a lot of holiday spirit to a simple wrapping.

You can take it to the next level with special gift tags, such as cookie tags with the recipient’s name written in frosting or a letter tag of the recipient’s initials.

For those of you who want to do something special and eye-catching for a small-sized gift, peppermint sled gift holders are a unique idea. All you need are two hooked candy canes and a wooden block that is slightly bigger than the present. Glue the two candy canes on each side of the block with their hooks curling upwards in the same direction. Then, simply tie the gift to the peppermint sled with ribbon and you’re done!

Christmas Chocolate Crinkles

BY MELISSA GOMEZ Ingredients: 1 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder 4 eggs 2 tsp of vanilla extract

2 tsp of baking powder 2 cups all purpose flour 2 cups of white sugar

½ tsp salt ½ cup powdered sugar ½ cup of vegetable oil

Step 1:

In a large bowl, mix together cocoa powder, white sugar and vegetable oil. Then, beat in the eggs, and stir in the vanilla. In the same bowl, combine flour, salt, and baking powder; stir the dough until it is well combined. Cover the dough and chill in the refrigerator for at least four hours.

Bake for 10 to 12 minutes. Once they are ready, let the cookies cool down for 2 to 3 minutes.

Step 2: Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper, then roll the dough into 1 inch balls or use a cookie scoop. Coat each ball in powdered sugar before placing them onto the cookie sheet.

Party Cactus Ornament

BY OLIVIA KIM The perfect Christmas ornament for sunny Southern California!

MATERIALS:

Instructions: 1. Trace and cut out an outline of a cactus on each piece of green felt.

~2 PIECES OF GREEN FELT ~WHITE THREAD

5. Thread a string of the color of your choice through a needle. After that, poke the needle through four to five multi-colored pom-poms.

~SEWING NEEDLE ~POLY-FIL OR COTTON BALLS

2. Sew white thread in even-spaced running stitches on one side of each piece of green felt.

~4-5 SMALL POMPOMS

6. Wrap the string of pom-poms around each of the two arms of the cactus and tie at the back of each.

7. Sew a piece of string through the top of the cactus and tie into a loop to hang the ornament.

3. Next, sew the edges of the two pieces of green felt together with the stitches facing the outside. Leave the bottom of the cactus open.

4. Stuff Poly-Fil or cotton balls through the bottom of the cactus and sew it closed.

Dimensions: 5 cm by 8 cm

8. Then you’re ready to hang your Party Cactus Ornament on your Christmas tree!
