Annual Report From the Head of Schools The 2019-20 school year was filled with abundant blessings. A successful golf tournament, a dynamic magazine drive, and a record-breaking Impact Fund are just a few of the exciting memories of the past school year.

These events, combined with the annual academic achievements, school projects, music concerts, and athletic events are the milestones that we hope don’t get overshadowed by how the school year ended with the emergence of the pandemic.

We found a hidden blessing in scheduling our Homecoming weekend in February. Since it was early in the pandemic, we had the opportunity to welcome our alumni back home. That would not have been possible during the traditional date in April.

Loma Linda Academy, like all schools, has wrestled with the challenges of the Coronavirus pandemic. However, as we consider the issue from a wider perspective, we

remember that there is more to life and education than this current circumstance. This school has been around since before the Spanish Flu pandemic early last century. We are confident that, like our LLA alumni from those years, we will get through these difficult times with blessed assurance.

We have adapted to the circumstances over the past several months and with the professionalism of the faculty and staff, the resilience of the students, the support of our families, and the generosity of constituents we continue to offer excellent Christian education in the tradition of Loma Linda Academy.

LLA applied for, and was granted, one of the first waivers from the San Bernardino Department of Public Health.

This allowed us to provide on-campus education for our grades TK-6. On August 27, for the first time in more than five months, and with a host of safety procedures in place, LLA welcomed many elementary students back on campus.

It has been costly to make the many adjustments and to provide the supplies needed for a safe campus. As we look forward to the time when San Bernardino County permits us to allow Junior High and High School students back on campus, we are laying plans for the safest and most efficient procedures for our students and staff to do school together, in person. Throughout all this planning and adjusting, school marches on; teaching and learning continue. Indeed, we have already completed the first quarter.

Thank you for your prayers and support. Each encouraging letter, each assurance of prayer, each thoughtful donation gives us courage. Loma Linda Academy, by God’s grace, will continue to fulfill our mission – for all to grow in God’s grace, thrive in academics, develop true friendships, and embrace healthful living.

The 2019-2020 school year ended and will be forever remembered as the ‘unprecedented’ year! Needless to say, it was a memorable year for Loma Linda Academy.

As I celebrate my second year here, I reflect back on a long-time, faithful, and generous LLA supporter who described this school as a “beacon for Christian education,” a statement that could not be more true. Thinking back on this past year, each person that we are fortunate enough to work with truly makes LLA a unique organization and it fills me with pride!

These pages are full of exciting success stories that would not be possible without the amazing students, teachers, staff, volunteers, board members, donors, community partners, administrators, and alumni. I would like to personally thank each one of you for your prayers, commitment, courage, tenacity, support, and generosity over the past year. You are AMAZING and I am truly blessed to be a part of this “beacon for Christian education” along with each one of you!

Roadrunner Golf Title Sponsor

Roadrunner Golf Classic 2019 Loma Linda Academy played host to 142 golfers, at the Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon (Beaumont, CA), for the 20th annual Roadrunner Golf Classic, presented by OctoClean. Over the past 20 years, Loma Linda Academy has raised over onemillion dollars for student aid. The 2019 tournament surpassed its goal by raising over $100,000 to help approximately 72 students with financial aid.

Golfers enjoyed a sunny day filled with friendly competition, great prizes, and good food. Unfortunately, there were no lucky winners of any of the hole-in-one prizes that included a 2020 MercedesBenz, sponsored by Walter’s Automotive Group (Riverside, CA) or an all-terrain vehicle sponsored

by Malcolm Smith Motorsports (Riverside, CA).

After the golf portion of the tournament ended, golfers enjoyed a buffet lunch where winners of the golf tournament and opportunity drawing were announced. The tournament also featured several silent auction items and one live auction item, which was a pair of courtside seats to a Los Angeles Lakers game.

Alumni Homecoming 2020 Breaking years of precedent, the 2020 Alumni Homecoming weekend was held in February, rather than the customary date in April. That decision proved to be a blessing for the approximately 230 attendees at this year’s homecoming event, held on February 29, 2020.

Alumni were all smiles as they gathered for class photos after the luncheon in the Elementary Gym.

Attending alumni enjoyed a day of reconnecting and reminiscing, with a worship service featuring members of the Class of 1970, including an inspirational message from Pastor Wayne O’Bannon. After worshipping together, everyone enjoyed a complimentary luncheon, followed by campus tours for those interested.

Just 12 days later, LLA’s campus was closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year, as students and teachers transitioned to online instruction to close out the year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Alumni Brunch

The weekend culminated with the first-ever Alumni Weekend Brunch, which was held on Sunday morning, March 1. The brunch was an opportunity for alumni to learn more about what is happening on campus these days and how alumni can become involved.

The evening programming consisted of various class reunions held both on-campus and at off-campus locations.

Impact Fund 2019-2020 Impact Fund Four Impact Fund projects were completed and fully funded, with the generous support of so many.

In early February of 2020, it was announced that LLA had reached the $85,000 goal towards the funding of the following projects:

the Mirror Celebrating 80 Years of Student News Over the past 80 years, the MIRROR has served as the student newspaper for Loma Linda Academy. Danelle Taylor Johnston, English teacher and MIRROR sponsor, directs a group of journalism students who must apply in order to serve as a distinguished member of the MIRROR staff.

The MIRROR recently published their final issue of the 2019-2020 school year that celebrated their 80 years of existence. The entire issue can be found on the LLA website at https://issuu.com/lomalindaacademy/stacks, along with an archive of all past issues, dating back to 1945.

Below is an article written by Linlin Liu, from the May 2020 issue, entitled “114 Years of Loma Linda Academy”:

ooking through the archives of the Mirrior, the history of the school comes to life.

Eighty years of the Mirror have witnessed it all: the Mirror subscription campaigns, the rebuilding of the Academy building after the fire, the various clubs throughout the decades, the renaming of the school, the ingenuity of generations of students, and, most importantly, the traditions that have shaped, and are still shaping the uniqueness of Loma Linda Academy.

One of the first and oldest school traditions was the newspaper subscription campaign. During the campaign, the students were divided into teams. Some the team names included “Penguins,” “Hot Rods,” and “Midgets.”

After months of sales campaigning, the winner was announced during chapel. The losing team would hold a banquet in recognition of the winning team’s success. The best record was achieved in 1974 with a total of 1,126 subscriptions.

Another tradition recorded in the Mirror from the 1940’s was Ingathering Field Day. This much anticipated day began with a “briefing” in chapel in the morning. Then the students were let loose to go canvassing from door to door.

By late afternoon, the students came back to the school with money earned from the day’s hard work. According to the article in the ’45-’46 I-2 issue, the academy participated in this tradition, raising $1,615.91 in total.

A third tradition was Field Day. Much like the junior high track and field day, it was an event held by high school students.

Traditions Continued Usually taken place on a warm April day, this day “was devoted entirely to athletes.”

The students were divided into two groups, each group with an appointed captain. Throughout the day, students participated in various sports activities – including fifty-yard dash, boys’ volleyball, and girls’ basketball – to earn points. The ASB would prepare a picnic lunch to treat the energetic students.

The fourth and more well-known tradition was the Junior/Senior Banquet. It was first recorded on page 7 of the ’48-’49/7-8 issue.

On the lively evening of May 15, 1949, eight cars loaded with juniors and seniors drove down the 99 highway toward Riverside, then to Loma Linda, and lastly to the Derby House in Colton. In Derby’s private dining room, sixty guests enjoyed a night watching a musical motion picture.

Although some of these old traditions have gone into extinction, it is certain that they have been an integral part of student life throughout the years. The oldest traditions may have been forgotten, but the joy and memories they brought to the students will be forever remembered and cherished. They are the history of the earlier generations and the glimpses of sound and color of their youth.

Maker Faire Maker Faire One of the many events that was forced to be cancelled last spring due to COVID, was the Loma Linda Academy Maker Faire. The 2020 version was set to be the first ‘full’ Maker Faire hosted by LLA. The Maker Faire was introduced at LLA in 2018 when the campus hosted a ‘School Maker Faire.’ That event was followed-up with a ‘Mini Maker Faire’ in 2019, which featured over 350 ‘Makers,’108 booths, the world’s largest robotic giraffe, the 501st legion, and more.

The 2019 Mini Maker Faire was made possible by a group of generous sponsors that contributed $16,000 to help fund this event.

The 2020 version was due to be the first of its kind at LLA, where LLA would play host to the entire LLA family, other Adventist schools in the area, and interested community members in the surrounding area.

In addition to the displays and hands-on learning, those in attendance would have the opportunity to meet with representatives from seven Adventist colleges/universities and explore their programs.

SAVE THE DATE: The next Maker Faire is scheduled for April 18, 2021. Keep your eyes and ears open for more details as they become available.

The LLA Maker Faire is sponsored by the T.I.E. (Technology, Innovation, and Engineering) program, directed by Gene Oswald, high school teacher at

LLA. The main focus of this event is to inspire and educate attendees through the use of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math and Service (S.T.E.A.M.S). From the Elementary through the High School, LLA has made STEM learning a focal point in the curriculum.

Our Newest Alumni When COVID-19 brought immediate changes to the final quarter of the 2019-20 school year, the administration, faculty and class officers worked together to plan for graduation events. Forced to work within the guidelines put in place by the State of California and the San Bernardino County Public Health Department, Loma Linda Academy held their first-ever drivethru commencement ceremony.

Graduation weekend started with a pre-recorded Consecration service that was streamed on Friday evening, June 5. On Saturday morning, a pre-recorded version of the Baccalaureate service was streamed, followed by the drive-thru commencement ceremony on Sunday.

A total of 102 graduates, wearing their cap and gown, arrived to drive through a designated route and receive their diploma. Each graduate was allowed to bring one vehicle, decorated with signs or other creative ideas, in celebration of their accomplishment. The drive-thru commencement was recorded and made available for those who were unable to participate in-person.

We would like to congratulate the Class of 2020 and welcome them as the newest members to the long list of Loma Linda Academy alumni. We look forward to welcoming you back home in the near future.
