Impact Fund LLA Impact Fund Projects The 2021-2022 LLA Impact Fund focused on a specific project for each school. The Elementary school project provided a shaded area for our TK-2nd grade students as they wait to be picked up after school. The shade covering for the west-end bleachers currently spans only half of the bleacher area, and the project doubles the bleacher area that is covered with the shade cloth. The Junior High project provided a portable sound system to enhance outdoor large group activities, such as games and outdoor worship, when an outdoor assembly is a more ideal setting. The High School project provided shade umbrellas for the High School lunch tables around the school Oak Grove. The lunch tables are placed around the trees and grassy area to create a park-like setting for students to build community and friendships.
#GivingTuesday We received over $50,000 on Giving Tuesday. Your generosity on Giving Tuesday provided an essential boost toward our ultimate $100,000 LLA Impact Fund goal.
LLA Impact Fund Goal Met! By January 2022, following the addition of year-end gifts, your commitment and generous giving completed our 20212022 LLA Impact Fund goal of $100,000. Praise God! That’s AMAZING! Thank you! We simply couldn’t have done it without you.

Elementary Scholastic Book Fair & Family Night Elementary Home and School organized a holidaythemed Family Night as part of the Elementary Library’s Scholastic book fair on Dec. 3-10. It was a fun night of socializing filled with holiday spirit! Principal Trautwein dressed up as a jolly Santa Claus, and the area was decorated with twinkling Christmas lights and festive decorations. There was even fake snow that filled the air and delighted attendees with an extra touch of holiday magic. This was a great opportunity to get some Christmas shopping done. Not only did parents receive some great books, but a portion of the proceeds went towards funding new books for the LLA Elementary library.

Elementary Catalina Island Educational Trip Grades 5 and 6
The 5th and 6th grade classes had great fun on their educational trip to Catalina Island. Since the previous year’s 5th grade classes were unable to attend due to COVID19, they had the opportunity to attend this year as 6th graders, along with the current 5th grade classes. The students spent three days and two nights on the Island, staying in very rustic cabins. The students enjoyed learning through handson activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, squid dissection, marine mammals, plankton investigation, tide pooling, and hiking the island. These unique experiences allowed students to learn about the ecology and geology of Catalina in a fun and memorable way.

Junior High Day in the life of a Junior High student School starts at 8:00 a.m. Students are assigned a locker at the beginning of the year. One of the biggest differences in junior high is that students rotate from class to class, and they no longer have one primary classroom teacher. In our current schedule, students attend two periods. With a midmorning break at 9:55-10:05 students can get a snack or hang out with their friends for a few minutes. They have three more periods before lunch time. At lunch there is time to eat, play, or just relax. Students choose activities like soccer, basketball, volleyball, etc. Then there are two more periods before the end of the day. Students have PE and technology four days a week in junior high. Additionally, they are enrolled in an elective class that meets four times a week as well. This includes options like band, choir, desktop publishing, art, and drama.
Our varsity program begins in junior high. Students can try out and participate in after-school sports like flag football, soccer, baseball and softball, volleyball. There are also opportunities for leadership in the student association and Campus Ministries.
Students in the junior high are part of a house group. We have four houses. Throughout the year, we have different opportunities that students can participate in as part of their houses, like a beach day, knowledge bowl, and lunchtime games.

Junior High Meet the Junior High Principal Amy Cornwall
Amy began her educational journey by attending La Sierra Academy from grades 3-12. She then went on to earn multiple graduate degrees at La Sierra University – a Bachelors, Masters, and Specialist in Education. Amy decided to spend her sophomore year of college at Newbold College in England, where she had the opportunity to meet new people and travel around Europe. She started teaching at Loma Linda Academy upon her graduation from college, and has taught grades 5, 3, and 4 (in that order), before serving as the Elementary Vice Principal for three years. Following her initial years at LLA, Amy worked at the Conference Office as the Director of Instructional Coaching for five years. Loma Linda Academy has been excited to welcome her back this year as the Junior High Principal. During her spare time, Amy loves to travel wherever and whenever she can. The beach is one of her favorite places to go. She enjoys reading, playing games, and being outdoors. Amy is blessed with a mom, a dad, and two sisters.
JH Renovation Project The Junior High campus is embarking on an exciting renovation project. The first phase, which will house the Humanities Wing, will also provide a larger, and more conveniently-located front office which will be relocated to the East side of the South wing nearest the gym. The remodel will also include updated classrooms with work beginning this summer. During the second phase of the remodel, the second floor of the Junior High gym will be completed to house the Math and Science Wing of the Junior High. Watch for more information about the Junior High Renovation Project.

High School TIE Program The TIE program at Loma Linda Academy is a dynamic program consisting of a sequence of four classes in technology education, pre-calculus, and physics. These subjects can seem quite intimidating, but the TIE program creates a learning atmosphere in which gaining an understanding of such concepts becomes a fascinating process through practical application. TIE stands for Technology, Innovation, and Engineering. The TIE program accepts a select number of incoming freshmen in good academic standing as the TIE classes are meant to supplement the regular academic program to prepare students for professions in a wide range of high tech industries. TIE classes are hands-on activity-based learning during which students learn how to safely operate power tools, work with metal and other types of industrial materials, utilize 3D drawings and other technical illustrations. Students have the opportunity to explore basic methods of manipulating industrial materials in the Wood Science & Construction Technology class. As they learn how to draw and illustrate in the Graphic Science & Communication Technology class, students are introduced to the world of architectural and engineering drawing. In the Manufacturing Technology class, students gain experience with welding, robotics, and 3D printing. The study of safety engineering and basic methods of generating power is brought to life in the Energy, Power, & Transportation Technology class in which concepts are paired with practical applications. The TIE program provides a unique environment for learning that teaches students about the science and efficiency of modern technological methods while engaging kinesthetic learners.

Music Programs Elementary Students at the elementary have presented some wonderful concerts this school year. In November the second grade concert was about “Gratitude!” With humorous songs about the colors of the Fall and chasing a turkey, to heart-warming songs about gratitude, students brightened up Chan Auditorium with song and colorful dress. Roger Gomes, accompanied on piano with Samuel on the drums and Gato on the bass!
5th & 6th Grade Band concert conducted by Craig Mohr
The 5th and 6th grade choir presented a festive concert titled “Sing Noel”. The students sang a range of choral arrangements of popular songs by the Pentatonix group, traditional carols, and Christmas songs. The students sang a song in Spanish, Latin, English and Zambian and dedicated a special song to their teachers. The concert season was met with enthusiastic audience response.
Strings Program In addition to the Hallelujah Vespers, the LLA Strings Program presented their first concert composed solely of LLA student orchestras from our school curriculum on December 8 in Chan Auditorium. The concert premiered the 5th Grade Orchestra and 6th Grade Orchestra, Concert Orchestra, and Sinfonia Orchestra.
New Audio Equipment for Music Department Funded by Generous Gift Thank you to Darryl and Audrey Benson for their generous gift to support the LLA Music Department. The new recording equipment enabled live recordings of the Christmas 2021 band and choir concerts, in addition to recording sessions with Pro Musica and Chamber Singers Christmas repertoire. The equipment proved particularly useful during the COVID19 quarantine, when it was used to present special music for an online church service . Additionally, the recording equipment was used to capture high quality audio recordings of piano accompaniment to be used in rehearsals. Kristian Leukert, LLA Music Director, is training a small group of students in live recording and mastering techniques that include polar patterns of microphones, commonly used stereo mic techniques, signal path, proper maintenance of equipment, and basic audio editing in Logic Pro. The new equipment will prove essential as the Music Department explores plans to convert the choir office into a sound booth and the choir room into a recording studio. Another goal is to provide a UC approved Music Technology course to LLA students for the 2022-23 school year. The Benson’s gift enabled LLA to grow the Christian ministry of music by providing an engaging and relevant educational experience for our talented and dedicated students.

Physical Education Elementary Physical Education
The ultimate goal of our Elementary PE program is that our students gain knowledge, skills, and an overall love of physical fitness/activity that they can enjoy for a lifetime. Our hope is that students learn the magnificent way that God created our bodies and how we can best care for the bodies he has gifted us. Through the use of sports and fitness our students are afforded a unique opportunity to practice their character and teamwork cooperation. •
LLE PE class expectations include…Play hard, play safe, play fair. We stress the values of kindness and respect and a belief in Phillipians 4:13…”We CAN do ALL things through Christ who gives me strength.”
•
K-2nd participate in various activities that allow them to practice their locomotor skills (running, jumping, hopping, skipping, etc.) along with practicing the skills used in various sports such as throwing, catching, kicking, striking with racquets/paddles.
•
3rd-4th continue their locomotor development and skills through their participation in various sports and games modified to their age and grade level.
•
5th-6th grade students transfer their skills and focus by learning the specific skills, rules, and basic strategy involved in sports such as flag ball, basketball, soccer, volleyball, and badminton, along with some other less common sports and recreational games.
•
All students are also introduced to and participate in various fitness activities (aerobic, muscular, and flexibility) based on their age group/grade level. Fifth and sixth grade students also undergo fitness assessments twice a year.
•
Each year our students have the opportunity to participate in Track & Field Day at the conclusion of their Track & Field unit. • Over the years our students have had the opportunity to learn and practice skills used in snow skiing, swimming, bowling, and rock climbing, through the LLE PE program. • Since being introduced to LLE, approximately 20 years ago, our students continue the tradition of Cup Stacking. This activity allows students to develop handeye coordination, bilateral coordination, and brain skills that they can transfer to other athletic activities. • In an effort to get young kids back on their bicycles, we will be starting a Strider Bike program with our Kindergarten students. We are grateful to Alexander Smith of Malcolm Smith Motorsports for his generous support. We are excited to get this program started.
