Favorite High School Memories

Emma Paden

Emma Paden (11) says her favorite high school memory is during her freshman year campout at San Clemente Beach. She had such a fun time with her friends chilling at the beach and making s’mores. She said, “It was such a great experience where we got to be independent and just enjoy each other’s company while also being right by the beach. This trip stood out to me the most because of the numerous fun memories created and late night talks.”

Isha Patel (12) says her favorite memory during high school was sophomore campout. She enjoyed staying with her friends for the night and making s’mores.

She also loved playing games like Uno with Ms. Hall, Dr. Sandiford, and her friends. She said, “One of my favorite moments would have to be stargazing late at night. We were up in the mounts, and the stars were super bright, so I loved stargazing every night of campout!” Overall she loved the experience and wishes she could experience it all over again.

Gladys Vasquez (12) said, “This year was hard for all of us, especially for making memories. I didn’t think I would have experienced my senior year so when they told us the news that we were going back to school for the last two months, I made sure to take advantage of everything and just soak in every last bit. So, if you ask me what my favorite memory of high school was, all I have to say was just being able to walk down those halls and hearing my fellow classmates laugh and chit chat about the most random things. I’m satisfied with everything I’ve done and what I’ve become these past four years, so I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Gaby Alfaro (10) says her favorite high school memory has been sitting at lunch with her friends. She always enjoys the time to talk about what’s happening at school and how everyone’s day is going. She said, “One day in particular, my friends told us a story of something that had happened to her in class, and to be honest, I don’t even remember what it was about. I remember all of us bursting about laughing, almost crying from her story and moments like those I cherish.”

Emily Yulip (9) said, “My favorite memory was coming to school for Friday vespers during quarantine.

I got to see all my friends again, and we were able to sing together and play games. One specific part I remember was everyone bobbing their heads to the beat of “Father Abraham” and jamming to Veggietales.

I very much enjoyed the short worship and was so glad to see my friends again.” She also said that she enjoyed being able to come back to school and do on campus learning with her friends.

Rebekah Mendoza (9) says that since it was her first year of high school and all but two months of it were over Zoom, she didn’t think this year would have any great memories until basketball started. When she heard that we were able to come back on campus, she was excited to finally see her friends again and get to have a basketball season.

She said, “Because it was my first year playing in high school, I was very nervous, but once I got to know everyone on the team, I knew I found a new family. Everyone on the team is so close and we tell each other everything. It’s really cool since we all are in different grades and come together and have such a great time with each other on and off the courts. The coaches are amazing and we always have a blast with them too, even if they make us run laps around the gym.” Overall, pandemic or no pandemic, her first year in high school was a year to remember.

As school is quickly coming to a close, summer vacation is near. With the pandemic, many people have decided to decline those plans to a COVID-free future. On top of that, local businesses have been hit hard by the pandemic.

The Californian government has been “Calling on Californians” to travel locally to help support the state economy.

The Inland Empire is a perfect place for people to travel within the state safely and comfortably. There are many hidden gems just a short drive away. Here are eight places to visit that are located in the Inland Empire.

Cabazon Dinosaur Adventures is an exhibit where people can view different types of dinosaurs and some dinosaur-related activities. There are fees for admission for kids, adults, and seniors. The exhibit is open from Monday through Thursday from 9AM to 6:30 Pm and from Friday to Sunday is open from 9AM to 8PM. Here is the website, where people can access more information: https:// www.cabazondinosaurs.com/ . It is located at 50770 Seminole Dr, Cabazon, CA 92330.

Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is the largest aerial rotating tramway in the world. It transports visitors over two and half miles in Chino Canyon and Mt. San Jacinto State Park. There are also gift shops, hiking trails, museums, and many more things to do once you are at the Mountain Station. Go to pstramway.com to acquire tickets and get more information.

Elmer’s Bottle Tree Ranch, features plastic bottle tree sculptures and other items..

Admission is free but people can donate if they want. On Friday and Saturday it is open from 6:30 AM to 6PM. On the other days of the week it is open from 7AM to 6PM. It is located at 24266 National Trails Hwy, Oro Grande, CA 92368.

The California Citrus State Historic Park, is located in Riverside. It is an open museum historical park that talks about the California citrus industry and its history. It is filled with citrus trees and is open daily from 8AM to 5PM. Check out this link for more information: https://www.parks.ca.gov/californiacitrusshp/.

The Whitewater Preserve is a wildlife conservancy where you can see the Whitewater River, camping, hiking, and wildflower viewing. The preserve is open from 8AM to 5PM, 7 days a week. Check their website, https://wildlandsconservancy.org/preserves/whitewater, for more information pertaining to instructions on how to treat wildlife, as well as reservations. The address for the reserve is 9160 Whitewater Canyon Rd, Whitewater, CA 92282.

According to lakearrowhead.com, Lake Arrowhead, is known as the “Alps” of Southern California. With a beautiful lake, seasonal weather, natural sights, as well as fun activities such as: water skiing, hiking, and fishing and many more. According to the Arrowhead Lake Association, the office is open from 8AM to 5PM. The lake will completely reopen on June 10. You can visit at Lake Arrowhead Village at their address: 28200 CA-189 Lake Arrowhead, CA 92352

Indoor skydiving is skydiving without jumping from an airplane. It is a thrilling form of skydiving, without having to go into an airplane. It is open on Monday through Friday from 8:30AM to 3PM and on Saturday to Sunday it is open from 8:30 AM to 5 PM. Go to skydiveperris.com to reserve your tickets. SkyDive Perris also offers outdoor skydiving.

Riverside Art Museum (RAM) is a museum committed to showcasing art to everybody and encouraging others to pursue art. RAM offers art classes and is having free admission throughout the month of May. Monday, Friday, and Saturday they are open from 10AM to 1PM; 1:30PM to 4PM. Their address is 3425 Mission Inn Avenue, Riverside, CA 92501

Remembering Those We Have Lost

From March 2020 to May 2021, many people at Loma Linda Academy have lost loved ones. These are some of the memories that were shared with the Mirror.

Julia Somoso (12) and Jamie Somoso (12) lost their cousin, Matt Matt, to Leukemia. Regarding her cousin, Somoso said, “Moments from when we were younger were spent drinking boba & messing around, but as we got older, our time became prominent to Facetime calls & text messages. Matt was just a kid, he had barely begun freshman year. He was also like the little brother I never had. Because of COVID-19, our last goodbyes to Matt were over Zoom.”

Unfortunately, her cousin was not the only loss that the Somoso family endured. Somoso said, “COVID-19 had taken a great big deal from me and my sister. Not only did we lose our little cousin, but our grandpa [Maximino Tio] & uncle [Pepe Conception] as well. I wish those who have lost someone peace and that God’s blessing may forever be with them.”

Aiden Stone (10) lost his grandfather, Cyril Connelly, to an unkown cause.

Haziel Merodio (11) lost his father, Francisco Merodio, to an unkown cause. Regarding his father, Merodio said, “I remember the times we use to go together with my mom and sister to play soccer at the park, when he went with me to the gym, picked me up from school and said with so much excitement, Mi Haazi!, (My Haazi!) and hugged me and asked me how my day went or when we watched movies together and laughed really hard at the funniest things or when he came home from work I asked him how his day went and he said he felt extremely exhausted, but he still kept going.

Now that he is missing, my mom, sister, and me have discovered all the responsibilities he had on his shoulders more than he ever told us because he just wanted for us to not worry about those things. He did all those things in silence because he wanted us to not worry and most importantly because he loved us immensely more than words could describe it.”

Lovita Lynn Panggabean (10) lost her father, Paulus Panggabean, to COVID-19.

Kalee Cautivar (10) lost her uncle, Joel Abuel, due to a ruptured aneurysm, and her grandmother, Adelina Garcia, to pancreatic cancer.

Regarding her uncle, Cautivar said, “He was my dad’s best friend whose wife is my mom’s best friend. When they came to visit us in California from UK, we did a road trip with our two families up the Pacific Coast highway. I never really had conversations with him since he was normally the opposite of his wife but I could always tell how much he loved his family and friends, and how much he meant to my parents.”

Regarding her grandmother, Cautivar said, “Ever since I was little, my family would tell me that I looked just like my grandma. We would call her ‘the Little Lola’ because she was short and Lola meaning grandma. She was always welcoming and gave some of the best hugs.

There was never a moment I could remember where I didn’t see a smile on her face. One week after her passing, her son died due to a heart attack that could have been related to his mom’s death and how he couldn’t visit her in her last moments.”

Tips for Finals

Finals are next week and this can be a stressful time for students who spend a whole semester preparing for them.

Lynne Hattendorf said that the best thing to do is be prepared, “There’s no other way to do well other than be prepared. This means more than passively reading something once. You’ve been taught study skills and techniques since elementary school, now is the time to re-engage them if you haven’t already!

On test day, eat healthy protein, trust that you have done what you can, take your deep breaths, and pray for calmness and recall of what you’ve studied.”

“Just take time to step back and take a breath” -Isabel Genovez Most people think that students shouldn’t be afraid of finals like Isabel Genovez (11) she said “I don’t think that people should be overly worried about finals. Just take time to step back and take a breath. It may seem kind of daunting but in the long run you probably won’t even remember why you felt so stressed about it.”

Others think that a little bit of fear can be good, Clarissa Tching (12) “Finals definitely should be taken seriously and a little bit of healthy fear can help provide motivation to study, but there’s no need to stress out too much about them.” Gabby Marpaung (12) “If it’s an honors, math or science class of course you should be wary of the final.”

As Ms. Hattendorf said, preparing

It’s good to review a little bit of material per day in the week or two leading up to the tests so that you don’t overwhelm yourself with too much information at once. Then the night before you can just do a quick review since you already studied and then get a good night’s sleep ... Paying attention in class, asking questions, and taking good notes throughout the entire semester is equally important, because that will make it easier to retain information and remember it later.” Genovez had a similar tip, “They should look over notes that they have taken over the past semester and go over any problems or questions that they know for sure that they don’t completely understand yet.”

Using good study habits while you’re learning will help you remember the material better when it comes time to use it. Reviewing a little bit each night and making sure you completely understand your homework on a daily basis is what will lead you to good grades.

(Plus studying this way for chapter tests makes taking finals easier because you don’t forget the information as quickly as you do when you cram!)”

Students shared how they are personally preparing for finals. Marpaung said

that she’s preparing by going over notes and homework so that she understands the lessons. Genovez said “This semester is a little different for me because I have less classes and more project-based finals than exams, but studying the way I talked about earlier has served me well in the past.”

It’s easy to feel embarrassed about not understanding something, but if you’re confused, you’re probably not the only one. Both your classmates and your grades will thank you for asking that question when the concept comes up on your next test or quiz.”

Genovez said that taking a mental break can help you focus better on your studies. “Take time for a mental break. Covid has taken us all for a spin and we need some time to just relax.

If you are feeling anxious or stressed you will feel much better after a bit of a brain break and you will be able to get your work done more efficiently afterwards!”

Now, equipped with these trips you can do your best to prepare for and ace finals.

Car Basics

The days are getting longer and summer vacation is almost here!

As the summer trips and events get planned, transportation is important. Cars are such a convenient transportation device that can go from point A to point B. Learning about cars and how they function can help people regarding road trips or roadside emergencies. Not only learning the basics of car safety is important but also having it as a hobby can be fun.

Many individuals learn about cars as a hobby in their free time so they practice on their own cars or work at a car shop for a bit or even find old, cheap, beat up cars to work on.

Obtaining a license is an excitement that’s overwhelming and realizing the privilege and the freedom given from that. Learning the way a car works inside and out is of such an importance that Gene Oswald (T.I.E. / Industrial Arts teacher) elaborates on its importance. Oswald said, “You need to uderstand your car to become a good consumer.” Sometimes just learning the basics on how to change a tire, oil changes, or even learning about the engine a little can make all the difference. But preventing all of these possible problems from arising to begin with should be top priority but also wanting an aesthetically pleasing car would be a bonus as well.

Doing research on cars that can assist with commuting for either school or work is important and should take priority when making a decision. Some advice students gave vary from a car that suits you to efficiency on the vehicle to prices.

Collette Hannawi (11) says, “If you were getting a car or like a project car, get it to where you can afford to buy and be able to have room to make builds to your car or modifications.”

Though driving is an amazing privilege to have, being smart on the road can be the changing factor when it comes to life or death. Being smart on the road is a factor that is covered when taking the permit test. Defensive driving is what every driver should be doing, but unfortunately, some drivers can be classified as aggressive drivers. Keep in mind when driving that not everyone on the road knows what they’re doing all the time and to always be safe. Follow the rules of the road and drive defensively and also have fun!

Hiking Spots

Summer is coming is the time for students and teachers alike to have some fun and breathe a sign of relief for the passing of the school year and just chill out until the start of a new school year.

Summer is coming is the time for students and teachers alike to have some fun and breathe a sign of relief for the passing of the school year and just chill out until the start of a new school year.

One common outdoor activity is hiking. Some common reasons to hike are to get some exercise and sometimes get your mind off of pressing issues and clear your head. There are various trails at hiking spots so it’s normally not just one trail. And this activity is enjoyed by many members of the LLA school campus. Michael Duffie (10) enjoys hiking because it is something he can do with his family and friends, backpacking items like food or water is something he enjoys when he hikes. Duffie says, “I love backpacking the most because after a long hike I can sit down, make s’mores, or fish with my family.”

Gene Oswald, industrial arts teacher, loves the outdoors. He especially loves photographing nature, off-road hiking, and the quiet from the trails. Elizabeth Baldwin enjoys hiking because it allows her to take a break from her busy schedule and enjoy mother nature.

Caren Hall, Chemistry teacher, likes how quiet it is in nature and it gives her something beautiful to look at. If you need advice, say no more. These people have some great tips for new hikers. Duffie (10) advises that you take the time to enjoy the hike and to bring family and friends along for the ride. Baldwin thinks it’s best to start off small and work your way up to more difficult hikes and to do your research on the trail before going on a trail. Oswald says to remember water and to know where you’re going since he’s had to rescue students who went off trail. Hall recommends investing in good socks and shoes and to not go alone if you are an inexperienced hiker.

Briefs

On May 16, the junior class of 2022 held an amusing banquet night for the senior class of 2021. The banquet was themed “The Greatest Show” based off of the movie, “The Greatest Showman.” tacos and agua frescas were served along with traditional carnival foods. For entertainment, a trapeze artist performs acrobats for the audience along with a band at the end of the event.

Seniors, cap and gown pictures are on June 2, if you haven’t signed up yet please remember to look in your emails for an email from Ms. Robertson to sign up. There are still slots left!

Senior weekend will be held from June 4 to June 6 and will consist of five events. Rehearsals for graduation will be from 9 am to 12 pm on June 4. Consecration is being held on from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm on June 4.

Baccalaureate will be from 9 am to 11 am on June 5 and Drive-in Classnight will be from 9 pm to 11 pm on June 5. Graduation itself will be held the evening of June 6, 2021 from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm.

The 2021 Summer Olympics is set to begin on July 23, 2021 and end on August 8, 2021, according to the IOC. Despite many calls for the Summer Olympics to be cancelled, Dick Pound, member of IOC, said that the games will continue.

Tickets for the 2021 Orange County fair are available for purchase now at ocfair.com. The fair will take place between July 16 and August 15. Tickets are limited due to limited capacity. At the fair, there are many fun opportunities to enjoy food, concerts, rides, and many more.

The Mirror is now accepting applications for the Mirror staff! The Mirror is a place where you can learn about journalism, writing, and other media skills. You can learn about how to use Adobe products, how to tell informative and engaging stories. The Mirror is fun and is led by Mrs. TJ, who makes the class fun and engaging.
