As Constanzo said “if [you] like learning outside of the classroom this is the trip for [you].” Because the experience is in person and students are “actually learning history where it happened, and where it does happen. Like being in congress, being in the capital, and stuff like that where laws are being made... it’s a unique experience. It’s a once in a lifetime experience.”

on a scale of one to five stars. Hall, Mangunsong, and Mamora all rated the Biology trip a five out of five stars. Constanzo and Alfaro, both rated the Government trip a six out of five stars. On the Mexico mission trip, Vazquez rated the trip

A teacher is like a coach. Coaches focus on fundamentals, strategies to achieve success, and on working as a team. Doesn’t that sound like teaching, too? Coaches can encourage athletes and push them to exhaustion.

They can express disappointment when teams fail and joy when they succeed. Likewise, teachers thrive when students collaborate and succeed, teachers push students when they are on the verge of failing. 20162017 has inherited a dramatic change.

This year there were many several open positions for teachers and staff.

From the opening of having a new principal to the opening of having a new chemistry teacher. These new faces that have been added to LLA’s faculty have brightened and changed LLA’s system. The high school experienced a change this year with a new principal, Datha Tickner. Before her position as principal at LLA, she was the principal at Orangewood Academy from the years 2010-2016.

In the years 2001-2010 Tickner worked at LLA; four years as the jr. high P.E. teacher, and five years as the elementary vice principal. “My goal is that each student has their identity in Jesus, not in their reputation, gender, clique of friends, or social status. Christ loves us all equally and unconditionally and I hope the faculty can lead by His example.”

Tickner’s goal is to make LLA better.

She said,“We have a strong academic program, but we can always get better.” Academically, Tickner has made it a goal to add more electives and AP classes to LLA’s academic program. She said, “I think that excellence is not static. Excellence is a continual journey. So let’s continue to

grow our academic program.” Tickner quoted a famous quote by Baruch Spinoza, “No matter how thin you slice it, there will always be two sides.”

Most students know Robert Skoretz as our principal, but now we are getting to know him as a religion teacher instead. This year he stepped down from the position of principal and has moved into the classroom to teach religion. While he was the LLA principal, Skoretz’s life was enriched very much, and although he enjoyed being a principal, his heart has always been in the classroom, which he missed. The transition from being a principal to a teacher has affected his life very positively because now he can do what he loves, which is teaching his students. When the position as a religion teacher opened up Skoretz thought to himself, “You know? I think I would rather be in the classroom.” As a former student of LLA, Skoretz was taught religion by two of his most inspiring religion teachers in high school, Steve Pollock who is the former provost of La Sierra University, and Doug Herrmann who is now the headmaster of LLA. Skoretz likes teaching religion because he can talk about Jesus and learn the Bible with his students. From laughing with them to being a part of their whole education experience, Skoretz loves the interaction with his students that he gets everyday. Skoretz said, “I think that God gives us lots of choices in life within His will, but I do think that He opens doors and closes doors at certain times because He knows what is best for us. I really felt this door opening was critical for me and was a good time to make the transition.”

This year, the high school has

welcomed a new friendly face to Campus Ministries, Pastor JO Cordero. Cordero was a student of LLA and was the first student chaplain and is now the new high school campus chaplain. He came to LLA from La Sierra Academy as the head music coordinator. Chapel is a time of worship and a time when a speaker shares a message from the Bible and delivers it to the student body and faculty. Cordero’s favorite part about chapel is first: visioning what to put into action, and second: watching it happen as students take upon ideas and make it their own. Cordero is learning as much as he can about ministry, LLA, and the students. He loves spending time with students and getting to know them. For this year in Campus Ministries, Cordero has aimed it as a goal to take Campus Ministries to the next level by: making the students feel included, making the students feel like they belong to something, having the students take ownership of their school, and making the students open to each other.

In the science department, chemistry has a new instructor this year, Caren Hall. Hall is a enthusiastic, caring, and devoted teacher to her students. Hall is excited by chemistry because she finds it logical. Having a good imagination, she can visualize the concepts well and break them down for her students. She is excited when she sees her students understanding the lessons. Her goal for students learning chemistry is that they will be ready for college.

For a lot of us students who don’t enjoy taking math, we have the opinion that math is hard, difficult, complex, or not understandable. For

teachers like Haley Baker, she sees math as a puzzle which is fun, but tricky.

Baker, as a kid, always knew that she would want to become either a teacher, doctor, or nurse, but she is not good with medical stuff because she finds it gross. She chose teaching because she has always been good at explaining things. “Math is like a puzzle to figure out, the pieces of it makes it fun and tricky,” Baker said. The best part about teaching math for Baker is the “look” of amazement and accomplishment, because they start to see the puzzle part about math.

A new member of the staff in the office is Suzanne Bathke, who is the receptionist for all of Loma Linda Academy.

She answers the phone for grades TK-12, and often times she is the first face or voice that someone sees or hears when assistance is needed. The importance of being a receptionist is that one is professional and friendly. One must show the warmth of the school and uphold the school’s standards and beliefs. What interests Bathke about her job is getting to understand how high school students function, because Bathke has an eight-year-old and someday she will have a high school student.

This job gives her insight

about the behavior and thinking process of the high school. Bathke loves to joke around; with her sense of humor Bathke jokingly comments, “We are not allowed to store our belongings in her cupboards.” She will help us with anything she can in her realm of possibility and likes meeting students when they introduce themselves to her.

Another new member of the staff in the office is Mandi Staples who is the registrar for the high school. She has filled in a big space for the school’s office this year. Staples sends out letters to parents to notify them of any upcoming events or any requirements that their student needs to fulfill, and forms any changed schedules. Staples’s job is very important because the biggest requirement within her job is scheduling students classes and making sure that they have their credits completed in order to graduate. A complication that Staples finds within her job is learning all of the things she has to do for 430 students, being new to this position is not an easy or simple task. Staples said what she especially likes about her job is “that we are able to talk about God, and praise God without any worries.”

2016-2017 is another

year for students to make memories with friends, to grow and learn from mistakes and achievements, and to also receive an education that will provide them with a beneficial and bright future. Teachers want their students to succeed, they want to see their students strive for the best and become the best. Teachers share the knowledge that they contain with us so that later on we may use what we were given to better it and become better from it. “If you can’t fly, then run. If you can’t run, then walk. If you can’t walk, then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.”

The Yearbook and Journalism teams of Loma Linda Academy attended the Publication Workshop at Pacific Union College to learn about their respective crafts on September 6-8.

Excited because their classes filled them with creative tips and examples, the LLA team buckled down to learn as much as they could to take their different publications to the upper echelon of high school publications. An opportunity that appeared slightly overwhelming, ended up being rewarding to their different branches of publication.

After four hours of traveling on September 6, the publishing teams finally arrived at PUC for the Publication workshop. Four Yearbook students along with five Journalism students got out of the Red Minivan and White SUV to join the ice breakers already in progress outside the Campus Center. While the sponsors registered the group, the students began playing games and meeting new people before a day, all brimming with entertaining classes and memorable moments.

The teams then headed to their respective dorms and succumbed to the fatigue of a full day of traveling.

Of the nine people that attended from LLA, three went to Photography, two went to Editor/ Leadership, two went to Video Journalism, one went to Design, and one went to Writing. In Photography, Rica Veluz, Yesenia Castaneda, and Michael Lowe all learned how to better edit photos and use a light room. At the Editor/Leadership class, Blake Walker and Daniela Mejia learned how to be leaders and to better work with people. Lunden Spencer and Elly Lee, who went to Video Journalism, learned how to make sound clearer and edit videos cleaner. During Design Class, Megan Eisele was educated in layouts and using visual tools for brainstorming.

Hunter Lazar, who attended the Writing classes, got a better understanding of Headlines and Captions and practicing Associated Press Style. With their myriad of skills combined, the LLA publication teams worked together to make a yearbook page of their experience at the Pub Workshop.

The Pub Workshop at PUC assisted in furthering the experience that the Loma Linda publication teams would need for the year ahead. The creative tips and examples were shared with those who didn’t attend.

diy: pumpkin spice Supplies Needed: mini pumpkin, Start off with the mini pumpkin pumpkin candle, mod podge, and trace a hole the size of your candle. glitter, carving blade

Ingredients: Crumb Topping 1/4 cup (50g) packed light or dark brown sugar 1/2 cup (62g) all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 cup (60g) unsalted butter, melted Pumpkin Muffins 1 and 3/4 cups (220g) all-purpose flour (measured correctly) 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 and 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice 2/3 cup (133g) packed light or dark brown sugar 2 large eggs 1 cup (227g) pumpkin puree 1/2 cup (120ml) vegetable oil (or Canola, or melted coconut oil) 1/3 cup (80ml) milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Cheesecake Filling 6 ounces (168g) cream cheese, softened to room temperature 1 egg yolk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 3 Tablespoons (36g) granulated sugar

Cut a hole with your blade and take out all the insides of the pumpkin.

Glue your candle in and decorate your pumpkin.

Add the brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon in a bowl and mix

Add melted butter and mix until crumbs are formed. Set aside

Mix flour , baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and pumkin pie spice until combined.

Mix sugar, eggs, pumpkin pure, oil, milk and vanilla with the mixture you did before this one

Beat cream cheese with an electric mixer until it’s creamy, then mix egg yolk, vanilla extract, and sugar in the mixture.

Add the batter to muffin cups and then add cheesecake filling and then add the crumbs

Bake for 5 min. at 425°F then reduce the heat to 350°F and continue baking for 15-16 min.
