I

could hear the loud cheers from the packed finish-line bleacher stands echoing across the Tempe Town Lake in Arizona. I was almost an Ironman— six more miles. My run turned into a shuffle, but I was still moving.

This dream of Ironman began when I was young. I remember thinking as a kid, “I wish they had an IronWOman so I can do it.”

I had never liked to run, but if I was going to complete my life goal of doing Ironman, I had to run. I joined a running club in ‘06.

In March ‘07 I ran my first Marathon, LA—26.2 miles. My first step complete, I knew I could do the run distance of Ironman, even if I was sore.

I kept pressing forward step by step. I found friends to train with and trained over the next two years. I did a few triathlons and one marathon and then in the summer of ‘08 a half Ironman; I knew I was the closest to my life goal of Ironman I had ever been. I had to do it.

I took the leap beyond my known limit and signed up for Ironman Arizona ‘09 in November ‘08, I was excited and nervous.

In the five months leading up to Ironman, I trained at 5 or 5:30 AM each morning for 1-2 hours before school and more on the weekends. It was tough to wake up early, but I always felt good after I had exercised.

There were setbacks like the fall on a bike trail and a tire blowout, but I kept moving forward with the support of family and friends.

On the second loop of the three loop Ironman run course, mental fatigue set in. Tears welled up, “I’m so tired!”

By the end of the third loop I knew I

would make it—only four more miles.

My boyfriend Flint Johnston stayed with me through these last miles. “Sweetie, I am SO PROUD of you!”

I was two miles from the finish—140.6 miles total. My friends and family were still cheering for me after 16 hours. “You can totally do this Danelle.”

Right before I went into the finishers chute a man said to me in a calm voice, “This is it, you made it! Enjoy the moment.”

I shook my head and tried to focus.

There were faces everywhere and arms held out on both sides giving me five and cheering me on.

And then those golden words: “Danelle! YOU are an Ironman.” My arms flew up in praise to God as I crossed the finish line.

Right after I finished, on one knee, Flint was proposing to me. My family and friends were cheering; the crowd went wild. I said, “YES!” The cheers are still echoing in my head. This was my iron journey.

Each person has her or his own iron dream that rests just out of sight. It is indeed hard work to reach these dreams, but the effort put into getting there is actually extremely fun and rewarding. With determination, persistence, and support we can reach these dreams—step by step.

Dating for Dummies

M

ost people have had an experience with a crush or first date that he or she like to take back, especially with banquet behind him or her. It doesn’t matter if it was a huge mistake, a small one, or whether it just ruined the evening. The fact that they messed up makes it a big deal.

Valentine’s Day is coming, so there is a chance to redeem oneself.

Although it is viewed by many as just another missed opportunity, a number of people see it as a chance to start a new relationship. In fact, the national site for Valentine’s Day boasts that it is the day where most people start a relationship. Everyone knows that dates are hard to pull off anyway, without the added pressure of a second chance or the drama that Valentine’s Day brings. But do not worry, there is always a solution. Read on for some easy tips to turn a date into a sucess.

Remember that if one wants a date to be a success, then he or she needs to realize that the little things matter a lot. In a survey on teenadvice. com, teen girls said that the way their potential dates took care of details showed how much they cared about going out with them, and that they were offended when they saw that their dates had not taken the time to figure things like flowers out. Probably the most important thing to remember is to plan ahead not only on where to go and what to do, but also on what to say. Nobody likes to be left standing

awkwardly in front of their significant other saying things like “Um...”

Also, presentation is an extremely important factor of asking someone out. An online survey conducted by teenadvice.com said that about 75% of teen girls look at how a guy asks them out and then use that information to set a tone for the relationship.

A similar website, topdatingtips.com, said that a lot of teens, both guys and girls, do not realize how much of their possible relationship rides on their first impression. As the classic saying states, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” Although these sources say that presentation is key, there is Branden Lai-Lau also a flip side to the matter. Take it from Jamey Cooper, Earth Science teacher, has been through the dating scene before. She says that presentation is not too important because when people ask someone out they are usually not themselves anyway, even if their trying to be confident. She goes on to say that “the only part that really matters is when you’re actually on the date.”

People might think that it takes too much time and effort to ask someone out, and for that reason they decide not to bother with it. When everything falls into place and they’re having a great time they will realize that all their planning and hard work had a purpose. Cooper put it best when she said that, “A date that goes right and is well planned can be one of the best times ever.”

A Mission in theMidst of the Storm T

hree schools, Loma Linda Academy (LLA), Redlands Adventist Academy (RAA), and Mount Pisgah Academy (MPA) in North Carolina, joined together for the ‘09 Thanksgiving mission trip to Louisiana and Mississippi in order to help continue the clean up after Hurricane Katrina of ‘05.

Many students had never been on a mission trip before. At the beginning of the trip, Amber Narmore (12) said she was “looking forward to helping someone and making a difference in their life.”

This was her first mission trip and she thought that[she] should go on one before [she] graduate[d].”

Jamie Rajcevich (12) said, "I feel happy and excited to help people, I went to Mexico my sophomore year, and had a lot of fun and I wanted to help people that were affected by the hurricane. I'm anticipating making friends and helping people.

The students arrived and were broken into groups of 15 and a chaperon. They were then given specific work sites. Each site had been devasted by the hurricane in some way.

As students worked they learned the stories of the individuals that had been effected by the hurricane.

For example, a man named Theo, 82, and his sister Marry, 77, were badly hit by the hurricane. It rained hard and there were tornadoes right after the other. There were only two rooms left after the storm. Marry said that when the hurricane came the roof fell in. Theo returned to what was left of his home. Marry 10

said we were “lucky that no one got hurt, the Lord watched over us." She said that many of their neighbors lost children and relatives, and that they felt lucky just to be alive.

After the hurricane, Theo received a Fema trailer and later became ill; he was soon hospitalized. Bewildered by his illness, Theo's family sought help and discovered that the cause was formaldehyde inside the trailer.

While in the hospital, it rained heavily water leaked into his trailer, causing it to mold. His nephews worked on his house, placing a roof back on, and fixing the plumbing and electricity. Marry said, "From there on we've done the best we could." They were one of the many families in need that the mission trip volunteers focused on.

The volunteers worked on building a new wall for Marry and Theo's restroom so that they would have privacy. They also laid cement for a walkway, and cleared away much trash and debris that accumulated from he storm. The students listend and offered kind words for many of the people who just wanted someone to hear their stories and how they over came it.

While on the trip there was a homeless family who was staying at the shelter with the students.

The mother had two sons and a daughter. The students played with the children and included them in all of the activities. One of the boys gave a testimony and said that after they became homeless he prayed. He was sad about coming to the shelter because he felt bored and lonely. He

told us that God answered his prayer when we were sent. He felt God had blessed him with many new friends so that he and his sibling would not feel lonely in the shelter Guenn Williams (11), a student from MPA, said that the most interesting person he met on the trip was a man named Roberto. “His house caught on fire. He sleeps on the front porch when it’s warm and goes to a hotel when it’s cold. He has no money.” Williams and his group were not able to do anything for Roberto, but they “were able to pray with him and encourage him." The students gained encouragement from his positive outlook on life.

Not only did the students work during the day, they also had chores during the morning and evening.

Each day the groups would organize into their work groups and take turns preparing breakfast, lunch, dinner, and cleaning up after one another. At night, everyone would have worship and song service in the main hall. After that, someone would share an inspirational message to help everyone come together and make it through the rest of the days.

On Saturday the group worshiped with a small church in Mississippi. The students helped with the song service and generously gave an offering; the church was appreciative. After the sabbath meal they played games and admired the solemn grey sky and beauty of the beach after the rain had settled on that cold day.

One of the highlights of the trip was a trip by some students to a local radio station, WQRZ. This was one of the only radio stations to survive Hurricane Katrine. During this time, the host moved the radio station to his home, which had only two rooms left. Then, he let the station be used for communication between rescue workers and people who were in need.

The students talked on air about the people they had helped and met so far. They had built a ramp for a woman in a wheelchair, painted, laid pavement for houses, cleaned out abandoned shelters, and much more.

Jessica Rham, a chaperone, said, "I had no idea that people were still living in horrible conditions." She said she would take the knowledge back and spread the news about the people she met and helped. Rham said, "You think you are just volunteering, and it forms into so much more just to be able to help people."

Everyone felt likely they had gained a lot form the trip. The memories, new experiences and opportunities to help gave new meaning to the sense of a mission trip. They were sent out on a mission to help, and it had been accomplished.

But in the end, they felt like they had gained much more than they had given.

hroughout the past decade, society has experienced numerous changes, many of them being in technology.

For example, the iPod, an mP3 that was created in 2001, was once harshly criticized for its scroll wheel and lack of compatibility with Windows, a common computer software. However, the iPod was then made compatible with Windows, which led to the creation of the iTunes store in 2002.

All high school students were either in Jr. High or elementary school at the time.

A few years later, in 2005, the iPod nano and video iPod were announced and put on the market. Apple also increased their variety with the release of the iPhone in 2007, according to lowendmac.com. These devices are now common items, for teenagers and adults alike, to own.

Another example of the numerous advances in technology is the Wii and the Playstation 3.

The Wii is a motion detecting game console with wireless controllers. The Wii was released on November 19, 2006. The Playstation 3 was released a few days before the Wii on November 17, 2006. The Playstation 3 is able to play blue ray disks, which are known for their high-definition quality.

School

en years ago, when current high school students were either in elementary school or, in some cases, had not even started school yet, uniforms were nowhere to be seen on campus.

Uniforms were not enforced until the 2003-2004 school year. The dress code has been changed multiple times since it was first enforced.

Students were required to wear True Grit’s uniforms, but rules about undershirts and outerwear had not yet been introduced. The current dress code still requires students to wear True Grits, but permits students to wear school colored, zip and button up outerwear. It also requires students to wear school colored undershirts.

A fairly recent addition to the high school campus over the past decade is the biology building. The biology building was completed in August 2007, and now hosts biology I and biology II classes, which are taught

by Nikki Gonzalez.

The old biology room is now used to teach earth science, taught

by Jamey Cooper. The earth science class was introduced in the 20072008 school year.

2010 Entertainment

T

astes in music, television, and much more has changed drastically for many over the past ten years.

In 2000, the most popular music of that year consisted of artists such as Faith Hill, Destiny’s Child, and Matchbox Twenty, according to musicoutfitters.com.

Popular artists of 2009 were Jay-Z, Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, and Owl City, says billboard.com Techno and catchy beats influence many songs in this generation.

The most popular television shows of the decade included Family Guy, The Sopranos, The Office, Lost, Dexter, and The Daily Show with John Stewart. Some of these shows have been around for a few years, while others are fairly new.

For example, Family Guy has been around since 1999, while Dexter started in 2006.

New television shows are created frequently, and changes in media and entertainment can be expected in future years.

Politics

olitics have also changed a great deal over the past decade. One of the changes that the U.S.A. has experienced over the past decade is the presidency’s change of office.

George W. Bush served as the President of the United States for eight years. He did not earn his presidency from popular vote, and lost the nationwide election, according to www.biography. com. Bush was reelected, and served another term in office; his last year in office was 2008.

On November 4, 2008, Democrat Barrack Obama won in the election against Republican John McCain.

Obama took office on January 20, 2009.

Another political event in the past decade was the terrorist attack on 9/11. New York and Washington D.C. were attacked. A third terrorist attempt was made on that day, but failed; passengers on the plane attacked the terrorists.

wenty one incidences of theft have been reported at Loma Linda Academy (LLA) in the first semester.

Some incidences include numerous items.

Things as simple as a couple of dollars get stolen, but textbooks, iPods, phones, and other electronic items have also been stolen. A question commonly asked is not only who keeps taking personal items from students, but why do they keep taking things? Perhaps there is a motive behind the reason why. Maybe there is a psychological reason. Whatever the case, the staff at LLA is trying to prevent personal belongings from being taken.

Lately, LLA has made some adjustments in security to try to help prevent things from being stolen. One reason new gates are being put up is to prevent people from coming on campus and taking things. Also S. A. senators watches backpacks outside during chapel to prevent theft.

Vernee Norman (11) said the backpack watch during chapel has been a productive means of security, however, “It’s not the school’s responsibility to watch our stuff. It is our responsibility for taking care of our things.”

Despite the new security efforts, other people’s belongings are still finding their way out of the owners’ backpacks—missing or stolen. Andrew Pang (12) said, “People’s backpacks get looked through all the time in the hallway during lunch.”

Some people see some of the school’s efforts to improve security as unnecessary or as a joke. Briahna Cornel (10) said, “I really don’t approve of that big, black, worthless, pointless gate that they have, or how they leave our backpacks outside during chapel.

The school told us they are not responsible for our backpacks and stuff.”

Jenny Mackay, the author of an article in

Behavior Management in Education Foundation (BMEF), said that some of the main reasons things get stolen is “to get attention or because of envy and jealousy towards a person.” Stealing is also thought of to be “daring, exciting and can give them a buzz .”

It is “a need for excitement.”

Heather Grable (9) said, “I would feel guilty and give it back. They are probably underprivileged so they don’t get much attention.”

However, some other individuals prefer to just not give back anything for fear of what might happen to them. Andrew Pang (12) agreed with this example and said if he was in the thief’s shoes, he “would keep the stolen items at home so they can’t be traced back to me.”

Pastor Skoretz encourages individuals to speak up when someone sees something being stolen. Skoretz said, “I feel that students who steal have no respect for others, the school, or themselves. They are setting themselves up for trouble later in life.” Serious consequences come out of stealing other people’s belongings. If it is serious enough law enforcement will be involved.

A tip that Skoretz gave was, “If the students take care of their stuff and avoid leaving valuables unattended then the chances it will be taken go down. I hope that students speak out against theft. Often this can help theives stop. It is hard sometimes to give information to administration about other students but if we really want the thieft to stop we need to know who is taking the stuff!”

Examples like these may lead LLA to be a better and safer campus.

A Penny For Your Punishment

T

he economy is at a downfall and we have seen prices on things drop dramatically. At Loma Linda Academy (LLA) the students were hoping detention would be droped or at least get a new method of the way detention is handled. Detention given for an unexcused tardy or absence. The office gives three days to get the tardy or absence excused with a note from a parent.

As the detention list gets thicker, some students think of how to hustle five bucks by lunch for detention or contemplate ditching detention all together. Most just choose spending their money on lunch and get a missed detention which just calls for another detention and an extra five bucks. Caroline Mooney (12) said, “It’s not fare when they add another detention for just missing a detention. That is another extra five bucks I don’t have.” Adding an extra detention for every detention missed is a way to make sure students do not keep missing detention and that being tardy or absent will not become a habit.

Briahna Coronel (10) wishes that she could either pay or serve detention instead of both, so she could have enough money for lunch because she never has enough for both.

Some students, like Nathaniel Morlock (11), wish they could pay 10 dollars so they would not have to serve, or serve without paying. That way the students who do not have enough money can just serve and those who do can add an extra five and pay the detention off. Morlock said, “I think that the fine to pay detention is ridiculous. Why would they charge you to spend your time?

Either you should pay or serve for detention. It is like I am being punished twice, I pay and then I serve.”

Robert Skoretz, vice principal, says, he is open to new suggestions. In the past detention without payment was tried and it did not work. If you have better suggestions that would be effective, Skoretz is happy to listen.

When Students have an overwhelming amount of detentions and they cannot pay it, the office lets the student work the detention off.

Some think that paying for detention is good because it adds extra pain and the chance of a student being tardy to class is less likely because he or she is thinking about the money. Jessica Williams, religion teacher, said, “I think paying for detention adds a little extra pain for the punishment to try and prevent it from happening. For some, since money is readily available, it may not have the effects it’s intended to have.”

Of course the detention list would be thicker if there was no kind of pain or punishment to being tardy. If absences and detentions are excused on time then there are no worries about detentions and the extra payment.

Some are curious to know where the detention money goes. According to Skoretz, the detention money goes to the special account for kids at Loma Linda who need help with tuition or do not have the money to return.

s the winter season comes and goes, many people visit the mountains for Christmas vacation. Many common places Loma Linda Academy (LLA) students visit include Mammoth Mountain (CA), Mountain High (CA), Big Bear (CA), Whistler (Canada), or Solitude (UT). The two main activities people participate in are skiing and snowboarding. The debate is which winter activity is the best out of the two.

To Paul Foster (9) skiing is “All about adventure and exploration. I don’t really like competitions, [I] just [like] having fun.”

Of the 268 LLA students surveyed, around 39% snowboard, which is greater than the 21% who ski.

To Matt Neufeld (12), snowboarding is “a time to have fun with friends and family. I used to take it more seriously, but over the last few years I like to just hang out and have a good time.”

When a person skis or snowboards, they usually do so at a certain level. This level describes the difficulty of the slopes they perform on and how much experience they have performing. These levels range from beginner to expert. There are signs on most slopes that describe the difficulty of the slope, ranging from a green circle (beginner slopes) to a double black diamond (expert slopes). “I can pretty much carve

down anything, but I don’t enjoy double blacks very much. And I’m not into the park that much.

So, I pretty much just [ride] straight [in the] air when I’m forced to do jumps,” said Neufeld.

Sheyla Preciado (10) believes that skiing is easier to perform than snowboarding because “there’s more movement to it.” Also, she said that when she once tried snowboarding, she “Fell every single time.” Preciado believes that skiing is more fun because “It’s a fun sport that you can enjoy with your friends.”

Foster agrees with Preciado because he is “better at owboard] skiing than snow[sn boarding.”

Alongside Preciado, Victor Wang (9) believes that skiing is easier.

Wang has never actually snowboarded before, but believes that it would be more difficult to pursue than skiing.

Although Neufeld, who has snowboarded for about seven years (but has been skiing even longer), thinks snowboarding seems to be the easier activity to perform. “I think it’s harder to control two boards than

one,” said Neufeld.

He also said “It’s like the other board sports that I enjoy doing.”

Skiing and snowboarding are not just about how difficult they are, according to Kylo Cautivar (9), his reason for snowboarding is “I just do it for fun.” Most students at LLA snowboard for fun just like Cautivar. They go up to the mountains with family and friends to have a good time.

Keith Stewart (9) also thinks snowboarding is more fun because “you’re with the younger group, and when you’re skiing you’re with the older people.”

The debate about whether skiing or snowboarding is the better winter sport still hangs over us today. However, many people do not do either.

At LLA, 29% of the 268 students surveyed don’t snowboard or ski.

Many students feel that skiing is the better sport because it is not as difficult, but other students feel that snowboarding is the better sport because it is not as “old” and uses more speed. It is up to students to decide which they prefer. Students should remember that it is mostly about having fun.

Sarah Henderson’s Baby has Arrived!

On December 30, 2009, Sarah Henderson, a teacher at LLA, gave birth to Micah Dale Henderson: 7 lb 15 oz. in.

Where is Malek’s Tree?

On March 20, 2008 a tree was dedicated to Mohammad Malek, a long-term visitor from Afghanistan.

Many of Loma Linda Academy’s (LLA) students gathered to take part in the ceremony. After the dedication, the tree mysteriously disappeared. It has been revealed that the tree has yet to be planted due to the construction on campus.

Once the construction is complete the tree will be given a permanent home. The tree is currently sitting at the west end of the maintenance building among a patch of flowers.

It is just waiting for a chance to put down its roots.

Girls Varsity Plays Basketball at the Staples Center LLA Girls varsity basketball team had a chance to play at the Staples Center on December 8, 2009. They won their game by a large margin and every girl on the team scored at least one point.

Two Teachers at Loma Linda Academy are Engaged Flint Johnston proposed to Danelle Taylor, a HS English and visual arts teacher, on November 22, 2009 as she crossed the finish line of the Ironman race. Laura Moran, a Jr. High English teacher, became engaged to Duane Gang, a news reporter for the Press-Enterprise, on November 20, 2009. Both Taylor and Moran plan to have their weddings in the summer of 2010.

Holiday Classic 5K and 15K Loma Linda Academy students were well represented at the 2009 Loma Linda Holiday Classic that took place on December 6. In the 5K, Timothy Giang (11) placed eighth among male runners. Lydia Kore (11) placed sixth among female runners. Katy Foster (12) ran the 15K. Lorelei Sinco (12) sang the national anthem for the event.

At the Holiday Classic, LLA cheerleaders cheered the runners to the finish line.
