A Season Of Thanks

hat is thanks? Some express it as a noun. “It’s a word used to describe being thankful,” Pauline Roman (12).

Others express it as an expression. “Being appreciative of one’s help,” Michael Browning (11).

Still others express it as a feeling. “Thanks is being greatful for something people did for you without being asked to,” Austin

Roberts (10).

Websters Dictionary takes these aspects and sums up the definition as, “to express gratitude, appreciation, or acknowledgment to.”

As an example of being truly grateful, a personal story comes to mind. My mother always tells me how when I was just 3 years old, I was a care free little boy. I don’t remember this, but she always reminds me of how I would run around laughing my little heart out. One day, I went to the store with my mom and sister. I decided to run ahead as I always did and began to run across the street. What I didn’t know was that a car was speedily heading down the street and didn’t see me coming. Seeing as that the car wasn’t slowing down, my sister grabbed my arm and pulled me back, removing my arm from its socket. I was told that I cried and cried, not knowing why my sister had done that. When my mom told me why my sister did that, I was told that I looked at her, cheered up, gave her a big hug and said thank you.

As seen in the invisible children assembly, it is essential that we should be thankful for

food, water, a place to stay, a safe environment and for the fact that we have the ability in America to do almost anything with no questions asked. But have you ever gone deeper than that?

I, personally, have come to realize that I am not alive everyday due to coincidence.

I used to think to myself, “I’m alive, but what now? Do I drone on through another normal day? I really don’t care.” God gives us life everyday for a purpose. He has plans for us, we just need to have faith in what those are. Even if we aren’t entirely sure what those plans are, we should at least be grateful and thankful for life He has given us.

1st Thessalonians 5:18 states, “In everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” In everything that happens, know that it’s no coincidence and we should acknowledge Him who deserves credit.

As the holiday season approaches, I encourage everyone to wake up every morning, and simply get on your knees and whisper a short message to the Lord “Thank you.”

Let Down: Mexico

T

he sudden cancellation of Loma Linda Academy’s (LLA) annual Mexico mission trip came as a shock and disappointment to many. After being planned for twelve months, the trip was canceled on Tuesday, October 29, due to the state of affairs in Mexico.

The situation in Mexico has been largely fueled by drug trafficking and the people involved with it. According to NPR, within the period of a month, there have been about 130 murders. This drug war has been taking place in Tijuana, just south of the Californian border, and also near the location the student missionaries would have been traveling to. During the time this violence has been taking place, tourism in Tijuana has dropped ninety percent. The events taking place in Mexico have been occurring for about eighteen months, which would mean they had been going on during last year’s mission trip; however, since then, the murder rates and gravity of the situation have increased.

This year’s Mexico mission trip had been approved since last year, according to Pastor Mark Holm, so when he was informed there was going to be a LLA board meeting on the 29th dealing with the trip, he did not expect it to result in a cancellation. All Holm was aware of was that there was a concern about the trip. In hearing about this concern, he and Dustin Aho, assistant campus chaplain, prepared themselves to reassure any skepticism. Aho brought with him a letter from Amor, the group they work with on the trip, which went over safety procedures and information.

To students the cancellation came as a big let down. Many students look forward to the school’s annual Mexico trip, as it is very rewarding trip, Holm said. The students can change the future of a family within five days. Andy Cortez (12) said, “It’s ridiculous that the past two years we’ve gone, and it’s [the violence] been going on for probably four years.”

According to Holm, the main thing that created skepticism for the board were stories that they heard from board-members’ relatives, or other people with firsthand experiences. When the board actually heard true stories of how bad it was there, it made

them reconsider whether or not the mission group should still go. Holm said that there was a lot of debating and considering that occurred. In attempt to debate, the board said they could meet again ten days after that meeting. Holm said that this would not work out because it would have left them only ten days before the trip.

In lieu of the trip, Holm and Aho quickly attempted to arrange something for the students. After going over many possibilities, they ended up arranging a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training program. In this training, participants would get to practice exercises from operating fire hoses, to rescuing people from buildings. Students who were going to Mexico got first priority to take part in the training.

Even though an alternative was found to replace the trip to Mexico, there were still many that were disappointed. Holm and Aho were both very frustrated with the decision. t was November 3, 2008. The air was vibrant with the energy of the upcoming election. Some people wore shoes supporting their party of choice, others put stickers on their backpacks and lockers, but nearly everyone had an opinion they wanted to be heard. Arguments could be heard in the hallways, leading up to the historic election. Even teachers helped the students be heard. Steve Laing sent out a mock-ballot to see who Loma Linda Academy would elect.

The Mirror sent out it’s own survey as well.

The November 4th general election was hard fought in the beginning, but when the polls starting closing it became obvious of Senator Barack Obama’s nearing presidency.

His victory was clear with an electoral vote count of 365 to 162 for Senator John McCain.

The Mirror survey election results of the entire high school were in fact much closer with Obama winning with 198 votes to 172, out of a total of 371 completed surveys.

The survey also asked about students’ thoughts on Iraq, and whether or not it would be best for America to leave. 254

students voted to pull troops out of Iraq and 117 voted for them to stay. Out of the 254 students that voted for troops to be pulled out, 84 said they would have voted for McCain while 170 said they would support Obama. A trend that was reversed along the party lines, as would be expected, with 95 McCain supporters hoping to stay in Iraq against 22 Obama supporters.

The votes were not the only way students had their voices heard. Many students of Loma Linda continue to vocalize their political feelings. Some students feel that America has benefited by electing Obama.

Sam Udvardi (12) and Justin Tuot (12) think that America is better off because “anything is better than Bush.”

Others, like Antoinette Bedros (12) think that Obama won’t be able to make all the changes he promised. “I wish him the best of luck because a lot of people expect him to be some saviour, and he won’t be able to meet up to all the expectations.”

CAFETERIA FOOD On August 21, 2008 the Loma Linda Academy (LLA) campus officially closed.

With this decision came many new obstacles, including food services.

In preparation for the closed campus the cafeteria was refurbished in order to feed the entire student body. It was opened in the middle of last school year, on February 13, 2008.

The Mirror staff surveyed the high school campus concerning the students’ opinions on the cafeteria food’s healthfulness, it’s afford ability and its popularity.

After 390 students were surveyed it was discovered that 22 percent of LLA students do not enjoy the cafeteria food and about 3.7 percent do enjoy it. The rest chose a neutral opinion. Most students labeled the cafeteria 2-4 on a scale of 1-5. This consisted of about 73 percent of all students in LLA. These were the students that said they somewhat enjoy the cafeteria, but would like some things to change. “They need fruit that’s less expensive,” said Jaci Shultz (11).

Jon Payne (12) said that the cafeteria is

“not healthy enough.”

Even though it is common for teens to not enjoy cafeteria food, this school has its exceptions. “I like the cookies,” said Christy Solis (12).

“I like the breakfast food,” said Shultz.

“The potato, egg, and cheese [burrito] is awesome!” said Payne.

Kevin Nam, the manager of LLA’s cafeteria said that the amount of purchased food tends to decrease in size after news

of the “new” cafeteria dies down. He also said it’s usually very crowded the first few months but then decreases and reaches a level of consistency.

When asked why he thinks less and less kids go into the cafeteria for food, Nam responded that he thought it was because of the economy crisis. He said most restaurants have gone down 50 percent in customers.

He also said that if restaurant’s customers decrease, then so will school cafeteria’s customers.

Every day the cooks make about 120 burritos, and on cold days it goes up to 150.

The most popular burrito is the potato, egg and cheese says Nam. Rice, bean and cheese is the second most popular burrito.

When Nam was asked why he thinks kids like LLA’s cafeteria food he said the cafeteria has “more variety.” He added, “We are [of ] faster service.” “[We are] more kind, and more clean.” The Mirror has counted all the survey responses and here are the results.

LLA Through a Different Light

What makes Loma Linda Academy so unique? LLA is a Seventh-day Adventist Christian School and also ethnically diverse. Racial ethnicity varies from Caucasian to AfricanAmerican, Asian to Hispanic, Middle-Eastern to American Indiana as well as multi-ethnic individuals.

For over one-hundred years, LLA has had students pass through its doors.

Nikki Gonzalez, biology teacher, who has been serving at LLA since

1978 said, “Ecosystem thrives if there is biodiversity.”

According to the Student Mirror Survey, where 397 students answered, there was a majority of about 39% who answered Asian and 23.5% who answered Caucasian. But the survey also showed that there was a great number of other ethnicities. For African-American, there was about 6% and for Hispanic 6%. For Latino there was about 3%, for Native American/

Alaskan Native 0.5% and for multi-ethnicity 22%.

“I think that there is a type of education that comes from getting to know people who think differently than you, have different cultures, and/or believe differently which adds dimension to students’ growth. It also adds richness to the student body,” said Robert Skoretz, religion and geography teacher.

Heegun Lee (12) also said that at LLA, he feels that he gets to learn people’s culture and language. He becomes more immersed in the school and obtains a better understanding of other cultures. Previously attending a single-race school in Korea, he noted a slight difference at LLA. He said there tends to be less of a race issue at LLA since it is multicultural. “[At] my old school, as I can remember, the majority was white. Now there’s nothing wrong with that, don’t get me

wrong, but LLA is the place I would like to stay while my high school years come to a close,” said David Bowen (11).

However, Bowen said that he also felt that having diversity brings about new things.

“That way, you don’t have too much of the same, but instead you can meet someone and learn something different about that individual.”

Has the diversity changed as years have gone by? Gonzalez said that diversity is increasing in our community and demographics are changing. It is partly because more people are coming from other countries to work at Loma Linda University and Loma Linda University Medical Center.

Then she said, “I love people telling

me about their home countries and their cultures, whether it’s what traditions they might have, what schools are like or even their own animals. It’s wonderful to hear what they think of our culture.”

“We’re different and we can learn from each other.”

“I believe it makes it fun getting to know students and learning to understand their viewpoints, background, and heritage,” Skoretz said.

good that we have a lot of diversity because we’re different and we can learn from each other.”

Bowen said, “I think that our school is very culturally diverse. In a way, that both benefits the community and ourselves as a people. You can see it in the individuals that attend our school, each carrying a different aspect that makes them stand out from the rest of the crowd.”

LLA Sees Invisible Children

O

n November 11, the student body attended an assembly in Chan Auditorium to hear Emily Sernaker, a University of Redlands student and Invisible Children activist, speak on behalf of Invisible Children. The event was organized by the Loma Linda Academy’s (LLA) History Club.

Sernaker began by explaining Invisible Children and how it began when three Southern California filmmakers embarked on a journey to Africa to find a story. They found themselves in Northern Uganda, disgusted and intrigued by war, displacement camps, and the masses of children who sleep in masses for safety, in fear of the rebel army.

Making it a point to inform people about this problem, they made a film called “Invisible Children: Rough Cut,” and began the

organization to educate people and increase awareness about the child night commuters and the danger the rebel army presents to them.

There has been unrest in Uganda for about 20 years.

It originated in the 1980s as a movement by the Acholi people to overthrow the Government of Uganda (GoU) for mistreating them. In the last ten years, Joseph Kony took leadership of this group, though with little support from its original members, and formed the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA).

The old supporters’ negative disposition to the new group’s extremism forced the LRA to abduct children. They take boys as soldiers and girls as slaves. Kony and the rest of the army brainwash them and they become the “victims” as well as the “weap-

ons” of the war.

Sernaker described how she got involved after seeing the film. She was responsible for motivating her own school to get involved, which led to an Africa embroidered trucker hat fund-raiser.

She later went on to become a leader in Invisible Children’s Global Night Commute in 2006 and participate in Displace Me in 2007. In both these events, participants displaced themselves for a night and slept in designated areas throughout the United States. Both events were done to increase awareness about the situation in Northern Uganda, and with that goal in mind the events were filmed and shown to congressmen along with letters written by participants. The Global Night Commute consisted of participants actually commuting to designated areas, while in Displace Me, participants brought only boxes, bottled water, and salt crackers to the location for a night.

Brisa Boydsanmiguel, LLA graduate of 2007, participated in Displace Me in 2007 at the Pasadena Convention Center where about 5,000 people were gathered. She said the event was an “eye-opening experience”

and “absolutely” recommends it. She would do it again.

Although Ugandan’s are still suffering progress has been made in recent years. The United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and Canada have all made commitments to either give aid or help peacefully resolve the conflict in Uganda. Since Invisible Children began, child night commuting has virtually ended. Peace talks with the Ugandan government have occurred and as of earlier this year, a cease-fire has been made. Unfortunately, Joseph Kony, has yet to find an incentive to agree to the peace negotiations and continues to disappoint the suffering Ugandans.

In an interview following the assembly, Sernaker explained the specific problems that may be preventing peace. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has recognized Joseph Kony and other high ranking officials in the LRA as terrorists and the ICC would follow through with punishment.

On the other hand, she explained, the

Ugandan government has an amnesty policy which would consist of the government and citizens forgiving members of the LRA for their atrocities and allow them to return to their places in society as if they had not done a thing.

Following the assembly Sernaker invited students and teachers on stage to ask questions and see and/or purchase Invisible Children trucker hats, bracelets, and movies.

While the audience crowded the stage, many commended Sernaker on her accomplishments as a part of Invisible Children, and how down-to-earth she is. Those who were moved by the cause and felt need to do something, talked to her about how they can help and start a movement of their own.

The items brought sold quickly and several students left Chan Auditorium with Africa embroidered trucker hats. So many bracelets were sold that Sernaker’s assistant went back to their car to grab the little they had left. When the house cleared, she emptied her stuffed pockets with numerous five, ten, and twenty dollar bills. Still quite overwhelmed, she took a

breath and looked at Sernaker who was also in shock.

The response of the students and faculty was similar to the one Sernaker described in her own experiences. Everyone, it seemed, felt sickened and inspired.

The title, “Invisible Children,” was chosen by the filmmakers because of the lack of knowledge of the war and its effects by the rest of the world. The filmmakers, as well as people like Emily Sernaker, have motivated and inspired people to help their fellow humans. They have accomplished so much and have certainly lit a fire under LLA, as plans are being made to host a community screening.

The reconstruction on the Loma Linda branch of the San Bernardino Library system, which is attached to the Loma Linda Civic Center, was finished in May of 2007.

The library now offers more attractions for teens, such as a quiet atmosphere and a soothing ambiance in which to study. There are also 30 new computers, three separate study rooms, a library website and an online database. There is also a new teen tutor program, where teens can sign up to help younger children and get paid.

The branch manager of the San Bernardino County Library said that the whole reconstruction process took from May, 2007 to May, 2008.

During the reconstruction, the library went through some extensive changes, that costed the Loma Linda City Board approximately 3.3 million dollars, said Stan Sewell.

build six children’s early learning stations, a break room with vending machines, and to install more magazine and catalog shelves. Sewell said that his favorite addition is the self-checkout system, which makes leaving a lot easier for the patrons and the staff.

Yet, there were also many issues about reconstruction and the final building that provided obstacles for the staff and patrons. Sewell remarked that “there was no insulation, so when it was cold outside, it was cold inside.”

Also, the patrons and staff had to deal with the noises and construction mishaps while studying and working inside the library.

Now, the library is looking to increase the items that people want, like manga, and it also needs more books and references on philosophy and religion. The group the library tends to attract most on business days are families and the seniors that attend the senior center, although it also tries to attract the other groups.

Getting a library card is surprisingly easy. To obtain a library card, one must fill out a form and show your license, or bring a guardian.

The Mirror staff encourages classes, clubs and teams to submit pictures and information about their events.

October 27-31, 2008 was Red Ribbon week. Students brought in nonperishable goods and on Wednesday wore red shirts in suppport.

At noontime on October 30, 2008 the mini-bike relay was held. Juniors placed first, seniors second, Sophomores third and freshmen fourth.

October 19, 2008 Was the annual Loma Linda Community Fair. People gathered on the LLA campus to eat food, play games. and talk to friends. Many LLA clubs, classes and organizations ran booths to help fundraise for upcoming events
