great, and Danelle Taylor has motivated me to take my writing to places I never thought it could go. I had never really spent time with any teacher before, but when Taylor invited us to her house for a journalism party it showed she genuinely cared about us, taking the time to make sure everything was always going great in our lives.

I think that without journalism nothing would have been the same in high school. I would never be as happy with my life and the outcome of high school without this wonderful experience. Even though my career plans went from Architecture to Journalism then Medicine and then Psychology/Communications. The Psychology and Communications choice of majors are the outcome of my experience and journalism helped me figure out my life. It pushed me towards the right direction. Being on the Mirror Staff has enriched me I will miss the experience and cherish it for the rest of my life because everything about it has earned a place in my heart!

Passing Gas

F

...it’s not the only thing that stinks

uel. By definition, it is “something consumed to produce energy.”

Lately, the fuel consumption in the U.S. has skyrocketed, leaving consumers with high gas prices and automakers trying to show their good will by creating hybrid versions of every vehicle built. Instead of complaining about 30 dollar fillups at the gas station for small vehicles, drivers are now seeing the price for a full tank of gas soar into the 50s and beyond.

The rise in gas prices has affected many Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors, including those driving vehicles other than trucks and SUVs. Not all students feel the hit, as many students’ parents pay for their gas. In a recent school survey, to

which 93 students responded, 57 students’s cars (61%) run on fuel paid for by their parents. Fourteen (15%) share the cost with their parents, and 22 (24%) pay for their

own gas. Even though gas money may not be coming out some students’ pockets, the rise in gas prices is still evident. Andrew Hoff (11) drives a 2000 Honda Civic LX. Honda has been known to make vehicles that get great fuel economy, but in light of this recent epidemic, it does not seem to be enough. Hoff (11) pays $35 to fill his tank and even though it may not seem outrageously high, these vehicles used to be filled for close to $20.

Another victim is Noah Griego (11). He drives a Toyota Corolla; a small car that gets excellent gas mileage. “It’s crazy that you have to pay 35 dollars to fill up, when it used to only cost $20.” Griego (11) quickly noticed the price of a full tank escalating-even while using 87 octane fuel.

Mini Coopers are known to be worth their money when it comes to gas, and even with a more powerful engine the Mini Cooper S still returns good figures.

Unfortunately, it still does not stop Ashley Zalsman’s (12) from charging $50 to fill the tank. High compression performance engines require top grade fuel, as in Zalsman’s case. This can easily overwhelm a driver, even if the vehicle looked small on the dealer lot.

Toyota Camry’s are stereo-typed as family cars, but as such, they can go long distances on a single tank of gas.

Randall Thomas’ (12) Toyota Camry requires a fee of $45 to leave the gas station-something one would not expect after seeing one drive by.

Michelle Michaels (10) drives a 1966 Mustang that necessitates 91 octane gasoline at the pump. This results in near $50 fill-ups each time. She comments, “Gas prices need to come down, I can’t afford to keep filling up my Mustang!”

While the small vehicles are taking a hit, the larger vehicles are taking an even bigger one. Alex Heim (11) drives a Toy-

ota Tacoma that requires no less than $50 to get a complete fill-up. He summed up his thoughts about the gas prices in two words: “They suck.”

Hannah Beall (10) drives a Cadillac Escalade, and filling it with 87 still yields high prices. The price to fill her tank - about $63.

Known to be the ‘pimpest’ SUV’s around, that still does not seem to help the famed ‘Sclade at the pump.

Ria Veluz (12) pays $60 to fill the tank of her Toyota 4Runner. She was surprised to see the high prices-“I never saw them coming.”

Seventy dollars is the fill-up fee for Aaron Lay’s (11) and his 1990 Dodge Dakota. Dakotas are smaller trucks with decent gas mileage, but the enormous fuel tank capacity is what hurts in the end.

Even now, there may be hope in the form of… corn. Corn is used as the main ingredient in a new type of fuel dubbed E85. It reduces the emissions of automobiles and thecrutch-like dependency on foreign oil. It has a downside however, in that it reduces gas mileage up to 30%, according to www.GM.com. Even with this flaw, it is easy to see that if it is implemented more our dependency will decrease. And when that happens, ‘passing gas’ will be a very welcome experience.

Seven Days In...

What do a supposed infamous Mexican bandit, a pompous businessman, a group of miners, a trio of greedy merchants, a sophisticated stranger, and an ingenious Chinese laundry owner have in common? They are all part of the creative workings of one of Loma Linda Academy’s (LLA) very own faculty, Darryl Benson, the director of the Loma Linda Academy Musical Theater Association (LLAMUTO).

Benson has been directing theatre productions for approximately 30 years since he started in high school. He has directed

Finally there is the infamous Black Bart, also played by Crow, with an impressive record of 29 successful stagecoach robberies to his name. On his last roberry he flubbed up and lost his handkerchief.

It just so happens that the ingenious Chinese laundry owner Sun Sun Wo, has four Chinese laundry workers who, when they get paid, engrave their gold coins with their names, and send them off to San Francisco. Mysteriously, the coins begin to resurface around town.

As mystery unravels, Black Bart is captured. The final words addressed to the illustrious Black Bart come from the supposed Mexican bandit Joaquin, played

by Julie Thomsen (12). “You will not be running, you will not be walking either. In fact I am not Joaquin either. I am detective Harry Love and I have caught Black Bart at last.”

The technical director and chief engineer was Tim Rasmussen (12). The technical aspects of the play went off without a glitch thanks to the many efforts of sound technicians like Warren Jarrard,

Crow said that it is “Always fun to play the villian. They always get the best lines.”

Crow also commented, “I think everyone did

I don’t like being the center of attention and I was in every scene.” One of the challenges noted by Tangunan was that “A lot of the singers either didn’t know their music or were flat on their notes.”

Hilliard commented that the most enjoyable part of the production for him was, “Watching the kids develop and learn, and watching them do things they didn’t think they could do.” He also said that he felt that “LLAMUTO is a wonderful opportunity to learn skills and develop self confidence in a way that can never be taught in a classroom.”

On April 28 to 30, 2006, the Freshman class of 2009 went to South Carlsbad Beach for their Campout. During the trip Coach Jon Hall spoke about the six types of love and Pastor Mark Holm spoke on having love for God more than Earthly things. On Saturday night the Freshmen had a class talent show. Some acts of the talent show were: stand-up comedy, magic, original rap/music, traditional singing, and a ukulele number.

On April 28-30, 2006, the Loma Linda Academy (LLA) Sophomore class of 2008 had their annual class campout. This year the campout was held at the Carlsbad State Beach in Carlsbad, California. They enjoyed rafting, playing on the beach, and a good time with their classmates.

The speaker for the event was LLA english teacher Anderson Sandiford.

On the weekend of May 5, the Junior class of 2007 went on their campout to camp Pendleton. Staying on the beach, gave the campers a picture perfect ocean view complete with seagulls and ocean spray. The food of choice was no doubt BBQ, which was cooked for every meal; including breakfast. With sand in their shorts, and their skin a little darker, they could go home with memories of another campout.

n May 5 to 7, 2006, Seniors at Loma Linda Academy (LLA) went on their class campout. This year it was at Hurkey Creek. Pastor Terry Swenson went along with them and delivered all the spiritual messages. On Sabbath morning, the Seniors partook in communion. They washed their feet in the creek, then took part in the Lord’s supper.

“This is a place that I have spent most of my time for the past twelve years, it’s going to be what hard getting used to not coming because I’ve gotten so comfortable with the way things are,” shares Amy Lee (12).

On this the one hundredth

year anniversary of LLA, this will be the one hundredth class to pass through these halls. “I feel special knowing that I am a part of the centennial class to pass through LLA, that is something that won’t ever happen again,” shares Hallock.

“It’s exciting, because we’re like a landmark class, we’re not just any other class, we’ll have our picture all over the place, and we can say s Senio n o we’re the centennial class, that’s cool,” shares Lee. For some, LLA will always have a special place in their hearts. Matthew Chelbegean

s the end of the school year is quickly approaching, Loma Linda Academy (LLA) will soon say goodbye to a special group of students. The Senior Class of 2006 will soon leave the realms of academy education and go on to pursue whatever is in store for them. “I know that the things that I learned from this school will stay with me for a very long time.

I can’t wait coming back here in 10 years and seeing where I came from. I will miss the fact that I’ll never be able to be with my whole class again,” says Jasmine Hallock (12).

With the coming and going of Loma Linda Academy’s hundredth year birthday, students are starting to realize how enriched LLA is in aspects of its history. Like scouring archaeologists, the LLA Mirror staff members have attempted to piece together the Mirror’s forgotten historic past in order to thoroughly understand when and how the Mirror first started out. Recently, the Mirrors’ past blurred lines with the future as past editors met together with one thing in common; all were past Mirror colleagues.

An interview with Margaret Foster Christian, Mirror editor from 1974-1975, was full of eagerness when she answered the phone.

Each question about the Mirror was answered with detail and delighted laughs as

“We didn’t have a journalism class then so we operated on a volunteer basis. It’s really hard to get students to write on deadlines when you don’t have anything to enforce it with,” Christian shared.

Parrish dealt with similar difficulties when he was Mirror editor of his time. “There was no class credit. There was a sponsor and it was different people from different [class] years.” Parrish also operated on a volunteer basis.

It is true that activities people get involved in at youth have the possibly of shaping their futures. Christian and Parrish both agree that The Mirror helped influence their career decision.

“I ended up beginning my adult career as a writer and editor,” Parrish stated.

Christian’s voice changed into a tone of agreement when she said, “I am an English teacher now and I have written and published a lot since then. I help students learn to write and work with them to stimulate their creativity. Helping them to polish their prose is really a lot like working on the newspaper staff.”

Many do not realize how the Mirror can

From learning how to write, design, interview, and communicate, the Mirror is all about providing the practical tools to any career. “I enjoy reading newspaper stuff and since I have done a lot of clerical work, I remember a lot of things that help me in life from the Mirror,” Hudson said. She appreciated how the Mirror taught her life’s practical lessons, tools, and experiences.

With vast experiences on their belts, these editors decided to leave LLA students with a bit of advice that could possibly help them in

life and its decisions.

“Learn all you can,” Christian said confidently. “A lot of student’s don’t feel like they know enough to ask. They should feel very free to pick the brains of people who are at a more advanced level.”

Parrish advised, “ I want to encourage students to have an interest in what they are trying to excel in.”

Carty rapidly responded, “Do it!” when she was asked if she had any advice for future staff members. “It’s wonderful to learn to put your thoughts on paper and it’s kind of neat to see your writing in print. Go for it!”

Despite obvious differences from old to new, The LLA Mirror could not have become what it is today without individuals like Carty, Christian, Hudson, and Parrish who paved the dirt road for future pioneers.

Until time stops, the Mirror will continue to live on paving a new pathway for history each and every day.

“It’s a challenge,” admitted Carty. “But it’s one that we always met.”

A Desert Masquerade The

Junior/Senior banquet has been a long standing tradition at Loma Linda Academy.

Exclusively for juniors and seniors, the banquet gives the junior class an opportunity to honor the senior class, and congratulate them on their approaching graduation in June.

This year the junior class went with the theme of a masquerade which gave students the opportunity to dress up in decorative masks. Some students did not just have masks, but dressed up in whole costumes.

Some of them included the notorious “V”

from V for Vendetta and Captain Jack Sparrow from Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean.

Anthony Santamaria (11), who was dressed as “V,” credits his costume to his fixation with the movie. Santamaria commented “I saw the movie once and became strangely obsessed with it.”

The location of the banquet was in Palm Desert at the JW Desert Springs Marriott. The hotel featured a lake that started inside and continued to the outside of the hotel. It was even outfitted with gondolas that the students could book times for. Ted Bancarz, junior class head sponsor, noted that “we [the junior class] wanted some kind of activity.” Feeling that the usual socializing at banquets was not interesting enough the juniors decided that the gondolas were just the trick.

Taking pictures at banquets is nothing new, but this year the junior officers put a fresh twist to an old idea. In addition to the

usual photography options, a photo booth was set up where students could take pictures and instantly receive four captured moments with their friends. Some students liked the photo booth because unlike with traditional pictures, they did not have to be so serious. Alexa Calaguas (11) agreed when she said she liked the photo booth because “you can be more relaxed.”

Over the years banquets have had food choices of varying quality, but this year students seemed to be quite happy with the selection. This year the menu started off with salad and dinner rolls.

It then continued with Yukon gold and zucchini lasagna with ricotta cheese and fresh basil. The desert choice was black currant chiffon torte. Andrew Hoff (11) said that he really enjoyed the food and that it was “infinitely better than the tofu.”

Hoff refers to the infamous tofu block from the 2003 Christmas banquet.

The entertainment for the night showcased a wide variety of talents, and was divided into three acts. The first act was a play that was written by Shannon Corros, (11)

Whitney Lirungan, (11), and Kevin Juman (11). The play was about Juliet searching for Romeo, with the help of her fairy godmother. The script for the play was unique in that it featured the last names of all the

seniors, and the class sponsors.

The entertainment continued with a slide show called Seniors Unmasked. The slide show featured pictures of the seniors from throughout their high school years. Some of the music was perfect for recalling high school memories such as Weezers’ “Island

in the Sun” and the ultimate tear jerker Vitamin C’s “Graduation.” Jason Slater (12) appeared to enjoy seeing pictures of himself more than the music when he said “I felt proud to have my face on a giant screen.”

After teary eyes had started to dry, the last and final act came on.

The third and final act consisted of a song entitled Friendship, which was dedicated to the seniors. The song was written by Shanni Corros (11), and composed by Trisha Aprecio (11). Mehlani Domingo (11), who sang the song, admitted that the song was “kind of sad” because it talks about the seniors going off to college, and the value of high school friendships.

With the banquet finally over, the Junior class can take a well deserved rest, knowing that their five months of hard work has paid off.

ew York and New Jersey were the destinations of this years Pro Musica choir tour, on April 19-24, 2006. There were 38 students traveling that include seven freshman, five sophomores, five juniors and 21 seniors, and eight chaperones.

Pro Musica sang at City Heights SDA Church in New Jersey on Friday night, Grand Concourse Church on Saturday, and North Eastern Academy on Monday.

members. They were so appreciative of our music. We heard ‘amen’s’, recieved applause, and had standing ovations. People were wiping tears from their eyes. Afterwards, we received comments that we were the best high school group they had heard.

Some people even thought we were a college choir. To me, their performance finally rose to their potential. It was the best all year,” said Calvin Knipschild, Choir Director.

“We felt very welcome in that church. There was a lot of liveliness and I could really feel the Holy Spirit in the congregation,” said Shelly Patterson (12), second soprano.

“On our free time we saw Carnegie Hall, The Empire State Building, and Time Square,” commented Allison Crawford (12) second soprano.

“Being at Times Square in person is better than you would think.

Watching all the lighting is amazing. Also, at ground zero where the twin towers were, somebody had made a cross out of the ruble. It was really memorable,” commented Zach Englehart (9), tenor.

Mandy Shultz (9), alto, thought “New York was crazy and crowded. You had to shove your way

through. Chinatown was really cool and the atmosphere felt like Chinese Culture” Tours are not all fun, especially when problems hit.

“Before the tour, I had just had surgery. Every time we sang I felt nautious. Walking in New York didn’t help either, because you had to walk in order to see something and by the end of the day your legs were sore,” said Nikki Tolentino (9), second soprano.

“For me, being stranded in the hot sun for five hours was a challenge. The bus was hauled away for inspection and I couldn’t find shade in Manhattan. I felt like I would be incurably sunburnt, especially with my ‘condition’,” said Knipschild jokingly as he rubbed his bald head. The bus had been taken to be fixed; there had been a problem with

the brakes and the choir had to wait two extra hours for the bus to be fixed.

“As for the choir, I think their challenge was me! They had to face my satisfaction. They did an excellent job though. I got to the point where I could close my eyes and conduct. Oh, it was heaven,” said Calvin Knipschild.

In the past, Pro Musica has gone to places such as The Epcot Center, Hawaii, and Disneyland. In the future, they plan to go to England and Ireland.

“I pray that a good pianist sees a vision one night to play for Pro Musica, because Jessica [Tangunan (12)] is leaving us.” Says Knipschild.

n the early part of May, Seniors at Loma Linda Academy (LLA) were dressed in profesCaitlin Boren sional attire. Seniors have been participating in (12) direct moch trials. examining her Mock trials occur in all four of Steve Laing’s witness Justin Government classes. These students are given a Canlas (12). case and asked to try it in court. Students played the roles of; prosecutor, defense attorney, judge, witnesses, jury, and court clerk.

This semester the students were given a murder case. The facts of the murder were that Martha Monroe killed her husband George Monroe.

The prosecution accused her of first degree murder and the defense rebuttals the accusation with a claim of self-defense.

During the first few days of the case, the defense and the prosecution split up to plan out their case. Justin Pope (12) was on one of the prosecution teams. According to Pope, it took time to plan out, just enough to “win by a nose.”

While the prosecution was meeting, the defense the court to order while everyone stood as was also meeting. Zach Golay (12) was one of the judge walked into the room. The trial was not just about the judges however, it was about getting to the bottom of the murder trial. The way both sides got this done was by bringing up witnesses. Witnesses had statements that they had to memorize before they got up on the stand. Justin Canlas (12) was one of these witnesses. He said it was not too bad memorizing the statements. He felt he did, “fairly ok.”

In the end, most lawyers thought they did very well. Jeremy Opp (12) said, “it [the trial] was pretty open and shut, guilty.”

Pope simply said, “we took the cheese.”

Adam Laudenslager (12) said things went, “pretty smoothly.”

In the end, the verdicts came in as follows.

Rose Anjejo, assistant librarian at LLA, had an article published in the The Pacific Northwest Library Association (PNLA). The article title was “Collection Developement Policies for Small Libraries.”

The LLA annual class drilldown was held on May 10, 2006.

Three beloved faculty members are leaving our campus. Be sure to say farewell to Phil Binkley, Duane Hilliard, and Mark Holm.

“Buns and Roses,” the traditional end of the year beach vespers, was held on Friday, May 19, 2006 at Huntington Beach. Traditional hot dogs were eaten, football was played, and a few speakers gave worship. The unique part about this years trip to the beach was that all students could take one rose and give it to a friend. Colorwise, pink meant “I’m sorry,” yellow meant “Thank you for friendship,” and red meant “I love you.”

What is it like to work in the same school -“I was in the school band and I used to play percussion. I quit band but missed your children attend/attended?

-“I was worried that I’d be just hanging drumming. My friend helped me. He around way too much. But I love it. I love was part of a band so I helped them sometimes.”

What about rock climbing?

-“When I was in college I did it a lot. I even took classes with my friends. I actually learned when I was a counselor at camp and I went with my friends who were almost always guys. I was very competitive so I took a weight training class so I could beat them.”

Is there anything else the student body should know?

-My whole family, they’re all big waterskiers. All my three brothers have made the World Team and are trying again for it this summer. I think they’ll go to Belgium this year [to compete]. [Previously] One brother went to Spain and two went to Belgium. They also did it in Italy and the U.S. too.”

-Final message?

-I absolutely love teaching here with my husband and kids. It’s a great place to be.”

Small Talk with Chad Manalo (11)

Why did you pick drums?

Is that your favorite thing to play?

Where else do you play?

My older sister started taking me to the Filipino church and Daniel Calaguas was the drummer and I thought drums were kinda cool and so my dad bought me my first set and I just started playing. The weird thing is that my favorite thing to play is actually the bass guitar.

How long did it take to practice for the talent show? Did you make the whole thing from scratch?

I play regularly at the Grove (the Filipino Church). I play every now and then at Kairos and University Church.

I’ve played all the way in Glendale. I also play with a jazz band and we’ve played for little house parties in Palm Springs.

Me and Mervyn started practicing for our audition about a week before it. Yea, we made it from scratch. Me and mervyn just sort of collaborated whatever was in our heads and just put them together. We practiced about two or three days for the talent show.
